Let’s Get Cooking Visiting Parliament The LGC club gathered in T3 to learn to bake Miss Myatt’s rock cakes. Students, assisted by Miss Myatt, Mrs Gitau-Bone, Mr Asadi and Mr Sanderson had a fantastic time learning new baking techniques such as mixing and kneading by hand, and shaping their rock cakes. The students worked together extremely well and had the opportunity to try one another’s creations at the end of the session. They all took home a delicious batch of rock cakes. Many thanks also goes to Miss Burns for taking the photographs at our sessions. The guest demonstrator on Wednesday 28th November was Mr Walker, who dazzled us with his Chinese stir fried beef and cabbage…. You will never see cabbage in the same light again! All recipes can be found on the school website. Next session Wednesday January 16th, all welcome for Mr Sanderson's culinary creation!! On Friday 7th December, A2 Citizenship students went to Parliament. After a tour around the Parliamentary estate students went on to participate in a debate on the effectiveness of select committees in holding the government to account. The debate which involved students from a variety of other sixth forms was of a high standard and TTA students excelled in presenting their arguments taking on the role of "devil’s advocate". Well done to all the students who participated, you were superb! Maths Family Challenge Below are five different people, Pythagoras, Galileo, Erik Zeeman, Einstein and Sofia Kolalevskaya. What do they all have in common, and what are they famous for? Remember there are four cinema tickets for the correct entry pulled out of the hat and everyone who enters will be awarded house points. Answers on a piece of paper along with your name and form to Mrs Crocker R21. Good luck! TTA Times DATES FOR YOUR DIARY January 2013 Monday 7th New Term begins. A U T U M N T E R M 2 0 1 2 The Totteridge Academy Celebrates Christmas Parents, students, teachers and Governors of The Totteridge Academy came together to celebrate Christmas on Monday 17th December at the annual Carol Service. The Totteridge Academy singers, Foulds school choir and congregation sang many traditional carols including a rendition of ‘Away in a Manger’ a highlight of the evening. Year 8 students, Alex Hinton, Solvig Becker and Yehoshua Francis, together with the Head boy, Oliver Mboge and Head girl, Lauren Cowan gave the readings. As the service came to a close, the aroma of mince pies filled the Church as everyone enjoyed the refreshments provided by the parents of both schools. Canon Hall Speers congratulated all the students who took part, as we look forward to what he described as ‘the biggest birthday party in the world.’ Winter Wonderland Quiz A Message from Mr Ferrie The Friends of TTA held the annual Christmas quiz on Thursday 13th December. Staff, students, friends and family came together to enjoy a festive evening of food, brain teasing and even some bush tucker trials. After a hard battle the Violet team won! Thank you to everyone who supported the school At this time of peace and reflection at the end of a very busy 2012, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish all our students, parents and carers a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year. 2012 has been an amazing year for both the UK and for The Totteridge Academy: the Olympics, the Jubilee celebrations and some excellent results for students here. I am sure that 2013 will be equally successful and we look forward to working together with all our families to ensure the best possible future for our students. I hope that everyone enjoys the festive break and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2013. Language, literacy, numeracy and sports festival The Maths, English and MFL faculties joined forces with PE to host a primary festival, welcoming seven local schools to take part in a series of numeracy and literacy challenges. These were followed by an active languages session where Language and Sports Leaders worked together with groups of Year 5 students teaching them new words in French, Spanish and Dutch. The Year 5 students, visiting from Woodridge, St Paul's, Northside, Cromer Road, St Andrew's, Coppetts Wood and Sacred Heart primaries all had a fantastic time and enjoyed the activities immensely. Our Numeracy, Literacy, Language and Sport Leaders planned a series of exciting activities and were brilliant ambassadors for The Totteridge Academy. PAGE 2 Happy Christmas to all our Readers We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported The Totteridge Academy in 2012 and wish all our readers a Happy and Peaceful Christmas, and look forward to a successful 2013 Interested in joining The Friends of TTA? Any parent who wishes to get involved with ‘The Friends’ is welcome to come along to our meeting on Wednesday, 13th March at 4.30pm in the School Library. Please contact Mrs Allison or Mrs Barker if you would like any further information. TTA Eco News! Christmas card appeal It was a fantastic end to our Christmas Card Appeal as parents, students and staff rushed to buy the recycled Christmas Gift Tags at our Autumn Student Review Day on Friday 16th November 2012. Members of the Eco-Mission Action Team have worked together over the past few weeks to cut out Christmas cards donated last January and then sort, hole punch and add string to each tag in an effort to raise funds and raise awareness of what the group does. They work together to develop their skills in team work, planning, delegation and improve their knowledge of how their actions impact on our environment and how to make our school more sustainable. Sonny Greenley and Rebecca Keenan enthusiastically sold the packs of 10 tags in each pack to parents, carers and guardians that resulted in over £50.00 being donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital, a charity that the children voted for. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE CAN WE ASK FOR YOUR DONATIONS OF USED CHRISTMAS CARDS AND UNUSED CHRISTMAS WRAPPING PAPER. BRING TO YOUR TUTOR OR HAND IN TO MRS CHRISTODOULOU...EVERY DONATION WILL ALSO WIN HOUSE POINTS!!! Thank you in advance and we wish you all a very happy, healthy and sustainable Christmas. Annual 6th Form Conference, Christ’s College School Sixth Form students had the opportunity to take part in the conference on Wednesday 14th November 2012. The panel was made up of guest speakers Mike Freer, Conservative MP for Finchley & Golders Green; Alison Moore, Labour Councillor for East Finchley; Ken Battye, Education Adviser; Andy Mariner, Chief Inspector for the Metropolitan Police; Jules Jack, Life Coach and chairing the proceedings was Nick Byrne, Director of the London School of Economics Language Centre The conference, in the form of "Question Time", proved to be not only a valuable experience for the students but also gave them a chance to network and meet other likeminded students. The focus of the conference has given them lots of "food for thought" in relation to our education system, University life, politics in general and our country's economy and what the future might hold for them all after they have com- Design and Technology Spelling Bee On November 19th The Design and Technology Faculty held their first annual Spelling Bee. It was great to see Year 7 so excited about spelling and they were brilliant! The winners were... 7 EAST – Tayo Abidakun 7R 7 WEST – Aaqil Shakoor 7O Honourable mentions to Eren Kul 7O and Adam Brandon 7O for coming a very close 2nd. Also, the 7 EAST groups spelt all the 50 words they were originally given correctly, and then ‘EMERGENCY WORDS’ had to be used (these were taken straight from the A-Level text book and the students had no prior warning what they would be!) It is fair to say there was definitely a BUZZ in the hall period 2 and 4, which had to BEE seen to BEE BEE'lieved!!!!! Head Girl Lauren Cowan presented the winners with their prizes in assembly alongside Mr Hollamby. The John Scott Nature Reserve Staff Focus The Eco-Mission Action Team donned their wellies and equipped with their forks and spades during lunch time on Wednesday 15th November 2012, planted trees donated by the Woodlands Trust and Sainsbury's. A number of members from across the school helped to plant a range of saplings including hawthorn, hazel, holly, dog rose and a Royal Oak donated from the Royal Estate. Students involved included: Kareen Russell, Michelle Arden Russell, Alex Hilton, Harry Pollard, Andrew Flourentzou, Nadim Kurimbokus, Yuk San Wang, Roshan Kasker, Samuel McGovern and Ray Onishi. Pinky Nontiboot took on the role of chief photographer while George Flourentzou recorded which tree each student planted. Ms Lenane and Mr Kinsley both supported the children who thoroughly enjoyed their outdoor planting experience. We are all looking forward to watching how they grow and add colour, shape and interest to our much loved nature reserve as we move into Spring. The school council will be interviewing members of staff for future newsletters; the focus for this edition is Mr Blackburn. The Year 10 council have asked very unusual and informal questions. Have a look at what he has been up to in his 14 years of teaching. Mr Blackburn’s role in The Totteridge Academy is to oversee the pastoral care and education for Year 8’s, he is their Director of Learning. When we asked him what would you do if you won one million pounds in the lottery, he said that he would probably build a recording studio in his house, for recording and producing his own songs. Although his house is too small to make this wish come true. His favourite food is Indian – garlic chicken. He has the most fun in going to watch Arsenal play, his favourite footballer being Dennis Bergkamp. He claims his biggest fear is that one day Tottenham will finish above Arsenal in the league. If he were to be an animal he would want to be a badger, just because they sing, dance, have fun and love mushrooms. (He even showed us a video!) His most embarrassing memory was when he was teaching, 10 years ago, he stood on a chair to write on the board and fell off, twisting his ankle. He even had to go to hospital! British Music experience On 20th November Miss Muley, Miss Lindsey, Mr Hollamby and Mr Law took 28 Year 9 students to the British Music Experience at London’s O2 Arena to find out more about careers available within the music industry. As well as a tour of the museum, students attended workshops on press and marketing, styling and image and sound engineering, which involved a performance from an up and coming artist.
