89.5 KTSY - Boise, ID Medium Market GM/Entry Submitter - BrianYeager 208.459-.5879 brian@ktsy.org HOPE Hope is in short supply. How can a Christian, Family Friendly, Adult Contemporary radio station actually make a difference? Can it do any more than bring the ‘believers’ together and create a sub-group? Can it effectively impact the many needing hope? KTSY is committed to being more than a music station. It’s a family that experiences God’s hope - and then shares it with their neighbors. 2010 was KTSY’s 20th Anniversary. 2010 was also a year of transition as Mike Agee, KTSY’s original General Manager transitioned to a new job. This was a challenging time of transition - a first for KTSY. Hard on the staff, uncertain for the listeners. God uses transitions to bring hope. This transition gave the KTSY team the chance to prayerfully evaluate why KTSY exists and what it’s mission and role in the community. Under the director of the new General Manager, Brian Yeager, the team wrestled with why it exists and how to implement that mission. From these discussions came a vision of taking listeners to a new place with Jesus so they can bring hope to their neighbors. During this transition, staff roles were reassessed and strengthened. This has led to a happier, more efficient team. September 15, 2010 I found your radio station in the Idaho State Prison. I was priveledged to meet the person Jesus Christ on August 4, 2008. Your station gave me countless hours of hope and encouragement through some very dark times... Yours, Michael PS. I got baptized at Ten Mile Christian last Sunday! In addition, KTSY organized the Prayer Tent and General Manager Brian gave a message of hope during the altar call. With a fantastic fireworks show, the attendance is broad. KTSY was there, helping spread hope. July 11, 2010 The KTSY Family threw Christmas Party in July to bring hope to the women and girls facing unplanned pregnancies. LifeLine Pregnancy Center, in Nampa, ID, assists them with ultasounds, planning, and everything a new mom would need for her baby. They brought hope! Piles of baby clothes, bottles and toys filled tables at the entrance of Idaho Ice World and inside the ice rink, there were tons of smiles, some spills, a little Christmas music, and a lot of fun! VeggieTales Premier Simple premis - invite the KTSY Family to bring the kids and catch the new Veggie Tales movie. The KTSY Staff challenged the Family to dream bigger - and dream of a project the family could do together to make an impact in the community. In the end, the KTSY Family ended up partnered with a Habitat for Humanity build. They were also joined by the local military. During a terrible economic downturn, the KTSY Family joined together and help a family find hope and a new home. The KTSY Family spreads hope while it has fun! They brought non-perishable food items for the Boise Rescue Mission Megan, Event Coordinator for the Boise Rescue Mission said, “I can’t thank you enough for all that you do for the Boise Rescue Mission! You’re annual VeggieTales food drive brough in over 2700 lbs of canned food! Christmas Wish In July July 29-30 saw a major evolution of KTSY’s Christmas Wish initiative. For several years, each December & July, KTSY coordinated a Christmas Wish Program, that asked listeners to call in wishes for their family or friends. With the economic crisis and the great needs that have come because of it, KTSY decided to partner with local charities. By doing this we were able to bring to those who needed it most and had a support system for making changes in their lives. The Results 23 Families Wishes Fulfilled 275 Families helped fulfill the wishes 5 Local Charities Partnered Stephanie, Development Coordinator, Hope’s Door “There were over 100 calls that day and many of those people didn’t know what Hope’s Door was. Now, many of those generous donors have continued to donate, volunteer their time and spread awareness about our organization.” hope The wishes were then put on air over 2 days. The response was so incredible that charities got more families for us to grant wishes because the response was so great. We were a family that had given up and been given up on and now we’re being loved on and you’re hope putting in our future. It’s beyond words. Next year, we plan on being a giver to Christmas in July!” Marilyn - A Wish Grantor I have been so happy to participate in Christmas in July. I love giving knowing that a specific need has been met. I know that God is in charge of all of that, but it is just a special treat when I can actually know how the gift was used to help one of His beloved. KTSY throws a great party! With unemployment high and housing values dropping as much as 50%, it was time to bring the family together and have some fun and spread some hope! On Labor Day, 4000 people descended on Settlers Park in Meridian for KTSY’s Family Get-Together. Parktacular featured: • • • • • • • • • VeggieTales Karaoke for kids (and the young at heart) Face Painting A Kid’s Art Tent A Battle of the Bands (submissions were voted on online, narrowing the bands down before Parktacular) Promote Yourself Trade-show for ministries and businesses Bounce Houses Food Vendors (the only thing that cost money) Softball All at Settler’s Park with it’s handicapped accessible playground and splash park. FirstAnnual Parktacular! HopeThrough theChurch Bill Hybels has said, “The local church is the hope of the world.” As KTSY revisioned it’s mission, they realized to be fully successful, they must connect people to a local church. This became a benchmark of success. This year KTSY has started new initiatives to support and connect people with local churches. Pastor’s Luncheon KTSY Sponsored a pastors luncheon to connect with pastors and cast a vision for partnership with them. While this isn’t the first time KTSY has held a pastor’s luncheon, it was the most deliberate in casting a vision of partnership. Church Email Update Pastors are busy people and have a vision for building their church.A radio station seems to be a ministry that doesn’t relate to what they are doing. To help facilitate partnership, KTSY has developed a Church Email Update. This periodic email updates local churches on events and happenings at the stations, with pre-made bulletin announcements, information on how to use an event, and who to share the information with (give this information about this concert to you youth leader, give this information to your small group leaders, etc.) This helps the local pastor use the resources of KTSY to give momentum and energy to the ministry of the church. Church Finder With the release of KTSY’s new website is the development of an online, searchable church finder page. Hope for Local Leaders Bringing inspiration to underwriters and local leaders was the mission of the day on November 5 as KTSY co-sponsored Dave Ramsey’s EntreLeadership Simulcast. Spreading Hope Internationally During September the KTSY Familiy responded to a simple need. The effects of the Rwandan Geonocide continue years later. The orphans of the genocide’s children now live on the streets. It’s the only life they’ve known. For $15.52, a child can be given food, water, and medical care for a month. The KTSY Family, partnering with Africa New Life Ministries, gave hope to 2374 children. MilitaryOutreach Bible StickCampaign KTSY, being near a military base, has a heart for our military men and women who are deployed internationally. Faith Comes by Hearing developed a military grade mp3 player with the New Testament already loaded. KTSY sent hope to our soldiers by making Faith Comes by Hearing’s BibleStick campaign a part of it’s year - by both using them during Sharathon and through an onair fundraiser. KTSY Spreads Hope atChristmas Concerts KTSY celebrated Christmas with music & Giving. The KTSY Family Christmas Concert performed twice - first in Baker City, OR (one of our translator serviced markets) on December 2, and then December 5 in the Boise area. The concert featured local worship leader Scott Riggan and Idaho native Jaime Thietten. The concert was free - admission was toys for local helping charities. Jean Lockhart, Director, City Light Home for Women & Children: I am speechless! After safely making the most amazing, slow drive with my precious Christmas cargo [14 lawn sized trsah bags of toys from the Boise Concert], I came in and brought the gift card/cash bag with the intent of making a quick list. BUT, its FULL of gift cards and cash! A plastic Wal-Mart bag! I am shocked! Just that alone would have been such a blessing for us AND THEN I have a huge truck FULL of toys!!! With the kids registered and the need for teen toys, our team is going to be so blessed and amazed when I bring all these goodies into work! Maybe I should get a police escort and do it up as big as it deserves. Food Drive KTSY also partnered with News Channel 7, KTVB for an incredible Cares Day! Broadcasting live from the Idaho Center, KTSY was a part of filling trucks up with food and toys to bring to many effected by our economy. hope December’s Christmas Wish was just like July’s. Again, it brought a lot of . Here’s a couple stories from the director of City Light: hope ChristmasWish Angela, the mother of 3 boys who also has her mom living with her, was overwhelmed by the response. A beautiful entertainment center came in to our office and was admired by all until she was able to get it and put it into action. Angela and her family felt loved, grateful and hopeful in their new life in Boise. Angela’s mom has already found a job and they’re doing great. Jamie asked for mixing bowls and other kitchen ware and is having so much fun cooking now that she’s outfitted with all the great equipment. Misty is excitedly planning her move to her new house and has a great start on all those things she needed to get off on the right foot. She loves her new life and said she also likes telling her story because it “makes people happy”. It makes me happy – I love to see those moms of ours fall in love with Jesus, give their lives to Him and start down HIS path and off the path of addiction and homelessness. What a difference this is going to make to her children! As I have said before, it’s more than “stuff” that we all need. It’s tangible evidence that God’s people are alive, well and working hard despite a tough economy, and in spite of what the world might think. ComingTogether ToGive & Receive Hope Matthew West DonorAppreciationConcert Ruthiana: Thank you for bringing Matthew West and Josh Wilson to Nampa, Idaho. My hubby and I went not just because it was a gift from KTSY as first time financial givers, but a fun delayed Valentine gift to each other. As I tell my hubby it ended up being a double date for me because I recommitted my life to Christ that night. KTSY was once again the media sponsor for Boise’s Weekend to Remember - and incredible time of for couples. Whether a couple is just engaged or been married for 50 years, this is a weekend they will remember as changing their marriage. hope Rock &Worship Roadshow Servicemen Care Packages Not only a great night of music and ministry, in Boise the Rock & Worship Roadshow was an opportunity to put together care packages for deployed service men and women. The KTSY Familiy came through, exceeding the expectations of our military partners. Worship InThe Park Uniting churches and the community, Worship in the Park is a unique event with local worship leaders, local pastors, and this year featuring Matt Mahr and Brenton Brown. I know the song was written in regards to abuse directed towards little girls, but I have experienced many of the same feelings and thoughts having been sexually assaulted and abused by a family member growing up. And as a result, two times when the pain, suffering got so bad that I actually tried to kill myself to rid this horrible pain; for I blamed myself for letting it happen. For 8 years I had been hiding this pain deep inside myself, not knowing how to deal with it or who to talk to, not even opening myself up to God. I never dealt with the pain that had happened to me. I never sought out help or companionship or counseling. I used the motivation that I wasn’t expressing any thoughts about it because I didn’t want the event to ruin my family. And do this day I’m scared that may happen if the story gets out. I had become lost, more broken, confused........but then this song came on the radio for the first time. I was driving home from work in rush hour so I couldn’t completely concentrate on it, but it caught my attention so much that immediately when I got home I went online and searched for the song and listened to it. I felt, that moment, that Got was reaching out his hand for me, to help me uncurl myself from the ball I had been enclosed in, and to stand by his side, wrapped in the love he has, has always had, and will always have more me. This experience left me so moved that I had to listen to the song three more times back to back to back, crying the whole time and just in awe of how God spoke to me through this song. For the first time since the assault and abuses happened I finally feel like there is someone I can count on to always be there for me and love me through this hard depressing part of my life. I feel like I am finally getting the strength, and it is all because of His blessing. He has saved me. Even now I can feel His arms around me lifting me up, and letting me know that everything will be ok. Such happiness only within God. This song helped me get picked up from the depths of despair and had given in me a new sense of purpose and hope. God you truly are a wonderful God! This man sexually abused me and raped me several times in June of 2007, but he got away with it because it was my word against his. His threats kept me silent for too long. I’m slowly learning to let that go and to rely on God’s justice and timing. The music on KTSY is what brought me through, not only the acute trauma, but the depression and PTSD that followed. Hearing songs like “Praise You in This Storm” is what kept me on the road many times when I just wanted the pain to end. Many of the songs KTSY plays are from artists who clearly have written words they received from the heart of God. Music touches the soul like nothing else can; and even now I’m falling short in the description of how the lyrics of some songs have affected me and changed my perspective! “There Will Be a Day” is one of those songs that helps keep me going. Almost four years, and the pain is still there. I will never be able to forget. But God is faithful, and there will be a day... no more tears, pain, fears, or burdens. But it’s not my time to go home yet. God wants me here for a reason. I am finally embracing that and I want to help as many people as I can with what I have walked through and am still walking through. I am weary of being a victim; I am ready to be a survivor. I want to stand up for my Jesus and press on toward the mark for the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. The memories are not as invasive anymore, and I thank God for every day that passes where the thoughts do not overwhelm me. God is making something beautiful. Hope Online This year, KTSY has been building a strategy to leverage the power of the internet and social media to connect people to the KTSY Family, hope, and to helping others in the community. This major emphasis demanded the creation of a new position - Director of New Media. PrayerWorks The KTSY Family is spreading hope online. Through a partnership with KTIS-Minneapolis, the KTSY Family is caring and praying for each other. PrayerWorks is an amazing tool that allows anyone to share a need for a prayer request using the online form. Then, members of the KTSY Family can go to the site, mark that they are praying for that person’s request, and even send a personal message if the person allows. Since PrayerWorks has been a part of KTSY’s online community, we’ve seen literally hundreds of requests and stories shared. We have watched as the KTSY online family has wrapped their arms of love around those in need and joined in prayer for them. Here are a couple ways we are leveraging the power of social media to bring hope. Facebook KTSY’s Facebook page is a thriving community on it’s own. It’s not just a bulletin board for station announcements. The KTSY Facebook Family is a safe place for people to share their thoughts and opinions, ask questions and receive answers. It’s a place for healthy two-way conversatins. As a result, if a member of our community posts a question, or any other item requesting a response, they get it. We strive to make sure each and every person receives answers to their questions, responding to them by name. What’s more, because we believe people find the KTSY Facebook Family to be a safe place, from time to time we’ll receive a post from someone who’s struggling and reaching out for support. Our Facebook page not only allows us a place to encourage them, but to network them with others who may have been through what they’ve been through to encourage them as well. And, in the cases where someone is struggling financially and in need of shelter or food, it provides a great place to connect them with area ministries that care for their need. KTSY’s Facebook page is a place of hope. KTSY is very proud of its ratings. Sp10 Fall10 Industry Leadership KTSY has always been dedicated to training the next generation of leaders in radio, as well as impacting the industry. This year KTSY features three areas that impact the industry. Student Leaders Assisting Other Stations New Media Initiatives Being located on a Christian high school campus, KTSY has always been a part of raising up the next generation of media leaders. Ty McFarland (K-Love PD) got into radio because of KTSY. Each year, KTSY hires several student workers. Some of them end up getting the bug and continue on in communications. Savannah Kisling High School worker Savannah Kisling graduated this year. This fall she will be majoring in communications at Walla Walla University. While there she will be working at our sister station, Positive Life Radio. After working for KTSY for three years, Savannah is one of our “rockstar” workers. She can almost run the office by herself, is experienced in Raisers Edge, and can get around the Prophet automation system. Investing in the future and inspiring a vision for media for the next generation is core to KTSY. Although Savannah has graduated and is going off college, KTSY has hired her younger sister to carry on the future of our youth in radio ministry (pictured with Savannah to the right). Savannah and some of the other office girls removing wall paper from the GM’s office. Assisting Stations KTSY has invested in other stations consistently over the past twenty years. This year, Director of Radio, Chris Gilbreth has assisted various stations across the country, including: Assiting with several sharathons including The Journey, PLR, and KNDL. Helped get KJRN - The Journey in Keene, TX on the air Assisted KNDL with programming Chris is one of the unique radio people who can effectively work behind the microphone, engineer, program and do a little of most any other area in the world of radio. New Media As mentioned on page 13, KTSY created a unique position - Director of New Media. In 2010, it was determined that we needed to be more intentional about our online community. To move from simply having a website and Facebook and Twitter accounts to creating a thriving online community that is intricately linked to our on-air brand, yet with a personality all its own. In order to achieve this, the New Media department was created. Travis Culver was named director of the new initiative. Upon creation of the New Media department, determined energy was focused on creating a tight-knit online community that transformed KTSY’s online presence from simply a ‘push’ medium for us to promote KTSY events, to a twoway, listener involved pathway of communication and shared ownership. KTSYWebsite KTSY Facebook E-mail In the time since the New Media position was created, KTSY has made significant changes in our online presence and the result has been phenomenal. This has been accomplished in five ways: Twitter Community Calendar KTSY Website With the feeling of “if you’ve seen one station website, you’ve seen them all” in mind, we set out to create a website that was community-focused. An online home that was designed with the person consuming it in mind. In this spirit, we surveyed our listeners to find out what they wanted most. The result was a website that had their favorite things front-andcenter of the website. Additionally, the site was designed to be mobile device friendly. Meaning that, unlike other sites that are difficult to navigate in their native form on a mobile device, the new site is engineered to have everything important to our listener/ consumer visible as soon as the page loads. Streaming, song info, weather, traffic and the promo window (tightly controlled to display only items of interest to our target listener/ consumer) are all easily usable on an iPhone, Android, or similar mobile device. In designing the site this way, we eliminated the necessity to have a raw, uninteresting basic mobile site. It has also allowed us to create a quality solution for mobile devices until the funds become available to create our own custom mobile apps. KTSY Facebook As part of our New Media initiative, special focus has been give to KTSY’s Facebook Family. Facebook offers a unique ability to network with and communicate with the fans of KTSY. Part of this focus has been to use cautious focus in creating posts and links that are of specific interest to our core target group. Whether it is an uplifting comment, Bible passage, exclusive behind-the-scenes video, links to parenting tips, great recopies or links to money-saving ideas, we endeavor to run everything through the filter of what matters to “her.” When you visit KTSY’s Facebook Family, you would also notice that there is a very active twoway conversation taking place. If a KTSY Family member posts a question, or shares something that should elicit a response from us. It gets one. And, while we’re not perfect, it’s fair to say that over 95% of posts that should get a response, do. We’re excited about how our KTSY Facebook Family is growing. On average we add 20 new Facebook Family members each week. Almost 13% of our on air audience has connected with us on Facebook. KTSY Email,Twitter, &CommunityCalendar Email The same attitude we take on Facebook applies to email correspondence to KTSY’s general email address – family@ ktsy.org If someone writes and asks a question, or shares a comment, whether positive or negative, we strive to answer each and every one personally. Twitter KTSY’s Twitter Family has been growing steadily. This is our New Media Director’s next focus. Although we have utilized Twitter to share updates on concerts, fun giveaways, and other great family events, we intend to become more hyperfocused on this tool that is proving to be the leader in fast, word-of-mouth communication. Community Calendar Simply put, there is a reason you’ll find KTSY’s community calendar front-and-center of our new website. It contains the events that matter most to the members of the KTSY Family. Vacation Bible Schools, community concerts, opportunities to volunteer and family friendly gatherings are just some of the things you’ll find in the KTSY Family community calendar.
