Welcome to the 2016 Stroud Green Festival!
We’re thrilled to present internationally renowned artists,
including soprano Emma Kirkby and lutenist Jacob
Heringman, lively K’antu Ensemble, who will be celebrating
Shakespeare; acclaimed folk duo The Askew Sisters, jazz
diva Winnie Greer & Friends (who performed to a packed out
crowd last year), acclaimed local flautist Nancy Ruffer with
harpist Jean Kelly, baroque group Spiritato!, resident medieval
ensemble The Telling with actress Jan Chappell playing feisty
12th century woman troubadour Beatriz de Dia.

The Askew Sisters
Emily Askew & Hazel Askew
fiddle, melodeon, concertina, voices
Acclaimed folk duo The Askew Sisters, winners of Best Traditional
Album at the 2015 Spiral Earth Awards, will take us on a tour
through the winding streets of London. Expect tales of love and
loss, Tyburn and the Thames, highwaymen and mad women,
merriment and murder.

Lute Workshop for Guitarists
Jacob Heringman
one of the world’s leading lutenists
Do you play the guitar? Do you have a secret desire to try
a lute? Jacob will give some background and history, and
will demonstrate a few of the basic techniques involved in
Renaissance lute playing. Everyone will have the chance
to try their hand at the lute, thanks to the Early Music Shop,
which will be on hand with some beginner’s lutes for you to try. EVENT 3

Music by extraordinary abbess Hildegard of Bingen, Machaut
and including the carol Ther Is No Rose, exotic Spanish cantigas
and Sephardic songs.

Pioneering period musicians Spiritato explore the sounds of
London at the beginning of the 18th century. Henry Purcell was
dead and fashions were changing fast; Italian style had arrived
and not everyone was happy about it! Music by William Croft,
JC Pepusch and GF Handel
Young North London based ensemble Spiritato are making
a name for themselves with their innovative programming
and focus on neglected works, such as their world premiere
recording of The Judgment of Paris by Daniel Purcell
(“high-quality entertainment” BBC RADIO 3 CD REVIEW).

The Telling: Jan Chappell actress • Clare Norburn soprano & writer

The imagined history of troubadour Countess Beatriz de Dia. An intimate
half concert/half play transports you to 12th century Provence with plaintive
songs and foot-stomping medieval dances. Jan Chappell plays the redoubtable Beatriz
whose emotions are sacrificed to an early loveless marriage: her only recourse is to channel
her pain into a passionate song about betrayal: A Chantar. Jan has played several seasons
at the RSC and The Tricycle and played Cally in the cult BBC 80s sci-fi series Blake’s Seven.
