re: Application for Commissioner-at-Large
Dear Sir or Madam,
Please consider my application for Commission-at-Large with the City of Kentwood. I would like to serve on
the board to assist in developing industrial and business opportunities for our community; continue
excellence in our public educational school programs across a spectrum of disciplinary fields; improve
quality-of-living projects for a growing urban environment as they maybe considered; continue consistent
delivery of city services including fire and police services; maintain transparent relations with the public;
and contribute to any forward-looking future development projects which may assist the City of Kentwood
in its growth and delivery projections.
In the past 1 have worked with Kent County, the City of Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Public Schools, the
Grand Rapids and KDL library systems, and many non-profits in developing an open technology project
that would provide free Internet access to all public and private organizations. Especially as pertaining to
the areas of access and communication between governmental units, inter/intra-agencies, educational, and
public forums. This was a six year project where I came to serve as a trustee of the GrandNet board under
the Delta Strategies group. After completion of this massive undertaking we became part of the
GrandCommunity council and transitioned to the Grand Valley Metro Council which had been newly
formed.
I have also served with the Kentwood Public Schools in assisting in a public relations campaign to promote
the school's many benefits, opportunities, services, and educational environment to incoming families. This
was atwo-year project performed in committee directly with the Superintendent as his braintrust group.
Another Kentwood School project included the creation of a women's gymnastics facility to all women's
sports -especially to the gymnastics, competitive cheer, and sideline cheer teams. This was a 4-year project
working with facilities and athletic services. In addition, a school wide program of health and fitness was
developed and enacted at that time to provide students of all ages with accessible programs both during
the school year and in the summer alongside public sports programs and camps. Previous to this I had
served as a community recreation youth leader and coach to various children's recreational school teams
from early elementary ages through to their sophomore year of high school for both girls and boys. This
provided opportunity to reach out, assimilate, and networlc parents into various school programs as contributingmembers to the public school system.
Currently I serve on several area boards -some locally and some regionally. These are the Kent County
Agricultural Preservation Board; GVMC's regional "Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds"
(LGROVI~ board; the Farmland Preservation Initiative of Kent County (a non-governmental body of agricultural business leaders); the KenC County Agri-$usiness Work Committee as a non-board but contributing
member; and the State of Michigan's MDEQ's "Healthy Waters and Rural Pride" Steering Committee for
wetlands management encompassing several state economic regions.
I also serve with Harold Mast on Kentwood's Board of Review (Deb Ring, City Assessor), and Joe Pung on
Kentwood's Housing Commission and Zoning Board (this latter as an alternate). I previously have served
with Superintendents Scott Palczewski and Mike Zoerhoff on various Kentwood Public School projects. And
with the current Grand Rapids City Manager Greg Sundstrom, as a trustee on the GrandNet board, which
also included Juan Olivarez, President of Aquinas College (and past President of Grand Rapids Comnnunity
College).
Lastly, I have been a Kentwood resident all my life including when it was not yet formed as a city and
known as Paris Township. My past(now deceased) relatives have served as area township representatives
including my father with the Kent Caunry Sheriffs department and the City of Kentwood's Police and Fire
Departments for approximately 40 years. I would love to continue their tradition of civil service if found
acceptable to the city's governing councils. Thank you for your consideration and for the opportunity to
contribute to our community.
Sincerely,
Russell E. Slater II

Dear Mayor Kepley,
am writing today to recommend Emily Bridson for the vacant Commissioner At-Large position in
Kentwood. I have had the pleasure of knowing Emily for over 20 years and in various roles over that
time period. She's been my fierce opponent on the volleyball court, an amazing volunteer for Susan G.
Komen Michigan and my successor as the speaker host for TEDxGrandRapids.
In each of these roles she has shown consistent personality traits of a caring, community leader. From
her sportsmanship and healthy competitiveness on the courts, to her attentive listening and caring for
others, to her careful attention to detail, I can't think of a person better suited for local office. She has
touched many people in this community in a positive fashion and has a great capacity to do more and to
make Kentwood better.
would strongly support her application with the City of Kentwood and I'm certain that there are
hundreds of others from Komen constituents to TEDx fans that would support her application as well.
If I can provide additional information regarding Emily and my experiences working with her, please
don't hesitate to call or email me.

Kentwood, MI 49508
Dear Mayor Kepley,
I am writing today to recommend Emily Bridson for the vacant Commissioner At-Large
position in Kentwood.
I have had the pleasure of working alongside Emily for the last 4+ years.
First was in her role as a key community organizer where she helped guide a joint
project of United Way and TEDxGrandRapids -the Livestream for Education,
When many said that it was an `impossible task'to coordinate several Non-for-Profits
teams, 16 international speakers, 20+ school districts, thousands of students... (In less
than 90 days)...Emily never blinked and showed her thoughtful and determined
leadership to help create this first-in-the-world TED student event.
I was one of the original founders of TEDxGrandRapids and by the third year I
exhausted by the effort it took to be part of this all-volunteer-army and stepped down.
I was elated when I found out that someone of Emily's caliber was joining to ensure the
organization's continued success. Last year I working in the background as a volunteer
under her leadership. In this role I experienced another of Emily's skills as
compassionate organizer — I was glad to help even on the mundane tasks as she made
me feel valued and important in my role asdoer'.
Today, Emily and I work together professionally at CQL and I feel lucky to having her on
my team. Emily has taken this anewly-created role of Engagement Manager and is
bringing all of her entrepreneurial, organizational and professional sales experience to
our strategic account relationships.
While I do not know the specific requirements of the Commissioner role, I can assure
you that Emily is driven, a compassionate advocate and works with the highest in
ethical standards.
Do not hesitate to contact me directly if I can provide any further insight.
Sincerely,
Kurt Nahikian

Dear Mayor Kepley,
am writing this letter to give my highest recommendation for Emily Bridson for the
Commissioner at Large position in Kentwood. Emily is a recent graduate of our MBA program
and I had the pleasure of having her as student in a strategy class.
believe strongly that Emily will be ahigh-performing Commissioner for the following reasons:
• She has a very solid academic and professional background and is able to see the big
picture. I would rank Emily in the top 10% of all students I have had in my 17+ years
teaching MBA students in her business acumen, critical thinking and personal
effectiveness skills. While very creative, she excels at solving both strategic and
operational issues.
• She is a very organized individual and has excellent written and verbal communication
skills. In addition, she is extremely reliable with regard to both individual and teamorientedtasks and projects.
• She is a leader and I believe she exhibits the high degree of emotional intelligence that a
position like this would require.
To conclude, I give Emily Bridson my highest recommendation. I believe she will thrive in the
community leadership position. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact

Reference for Emily Bridson
have known Emily since the early fall of 2013 when she and I met during her transition from a position from
which she had been downsized. I served as her assigned consultant from September to November of that
year. During that fall, she and I met a number of times to discuss her career direction and the strategy she
might take to change careers and expand her connections in West Michigan into work that better reflected her
values, her successful sales and athletic background, and the MBA from Michigan State she expected (and did
complete) awarded to her in 2014.
I've been impressed by her desire and focus to find a path to new work as we discussed her thinking and
discovered new ways to describe her sense of vocation. She was diligent in working on the tasks we agreed
would help her move forward, and completed those tasks in a timely basis. During this period of discovery,
she was open to new ideas and suggestions which she pursued. While the career opportunity she chose to
accept in late fall of 2013 was not the ideal, it did fit her background and afforded her further time to discover,
explore and consider new directions. Later in the spring she found the new position eliminated by the new
employer, and we worked together again to keep moving forward. During both times following our work
together, she had found a sense of purposeful discovery by networking and contributing in new ways to her
community in Grand Rapids, an area to which she had just moved some 2 years or so ago, selecting to live in
Kentwood.
During that year following our initial work together, she built her own connections and contributed to those of
others, including considerable work with our West Michigan area's community leaders, in particular those
guiding the TEDx Grand Rapids events. She's subsequently become a member of that forward-thinking,
collaborative group helping 100's of people adopt innovative and facilitative manners of helping our
community envision and build a better future for all.
The opportunities she discovered and is pursuing to be an active part of her community includes the City
Council of her our city of residence, Kentwood. She has both the capability and skills to contribute much to the
City, the City Council and the important decisions that face the city and the surrounding municipalities that are
influenced by Kentwood. I believe she's "cut of the same cloth" as the outstanding Kentwood and Kent County
public servants I've personally known during the service to the City--the late Mayor Richard Root, former
Commissioner and Area Agency on Aging Board member Harold Mast, and former Mayor and state legislator
Bill Hardiman.
wholeheartedly comment her to you to serve as a City Commissioner.
