The total value of fabricated metal shipments in Georgia increased significantly from 1994 to 2013, while the cost of materials remained relatively low. Another indicator of the fabricated metal industry’s increasing activity in Georgia is the amount of value added during manufacturing. Georgia’s fabricated metal industry more than doubled its total value-added dollar amount from 1994 to 2013, ranking second only to South Carolina among Southeastern states. “Southwire continues to pursue meaningful growth across all of our markets...These facilities and the new jobs they provide are tangible proof of that commitment. They also demonstrate our commitment to focus new growth in our hometown of Carrollton, which has contributed immeasurably to our success.” Value of Shipments Increases while Cost of Materials Remains Low $9.0 Total Value of Shipments Total Cost of Materials $8.0 $7.0 $6.0 Billions ($USD) Southwire, a leading manufacturer of wire and cable used in electricity distribution, announced the company will be expanding its presence in Carroll County. An aggressive incentives program, favorable tax rates, favorable conditions for employers, and programs to accelerate the permitting and development process make Georgia the right place to start and grow a business. Georgia’s current corporate income tax is 6 percent, ranking it among the top 10 states with the lowest corporate income tax rate. Georgia’s corporate income tax is based on a single-factor apportionment, weighted solely on sales receipts in Georgia. Statutory Incentives Metal fabrication companies in Georgia are often eligible for a variety of tax credits and sales tax exemptions. The state’s job tax credit program grants credits for job creation that may be applied against the state’s corporate income tax. Other tax credits including those tied to capital investment, employee training and child care are also available. See the listing to the right for major tax credit programs and major tax exemptions in Georgia. For detailed information on tax exemptions, credits and other state incentives, please refer to the Business Incentives publication on the Publications page of SelectGeorgia.com. Right-to-Work State Georgia is a right-to-work state. Georgia has maintained this status since 1947. Fewer than half of the states in the U.S. grant workers right-to-work protection. Employment-at-Will State Georgia provides hiring and firing flexibility according to current employment regulations. Georgia has no employment laws which are more stringent or restrictive than those at the federal level. In the absence of a written contract and in compliance with federal employment laws, employers in Georgia are able to exercise their own hiring and dismissal decisions; state laws make no provisions for wrongful discharge. The Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute’s SETAAC Program Revitalizes Bonnell Aluminum After the Recession The Southeastern Trade Adjustment Assistance Center (SETAAC), a program based at Georgia Tech’s Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI²), provides federal funding to southeastern manufacturers reporting declines in employment and sales. The poor economic climate in the U.S. made Bonnell Aluminum a perfect candidate for support. Bonnell Aluminum matched these funds and enthusiastically implemented recommended projects such as Lean Six Sigma training, management consulting, and individual executive coaching. Since initial training, Bonnell Aluminum has completed projects exceeding $1 million in savings in each of the last three years “The experience working with three consulting companies helped us transform from being unprofitable in 2009 and 2010 to being profitable again. [The training] changed the way we think – we’re thinking differently and poised to excel in all markets.” Andrew Massey, Division Manager Bonnell Aluminum Georgia has a variety of resources available to fabricated metal manufacturers. Georgia is home to the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), one of the leading universities in industrial and other engineering disciplines. The state also has a variety of industry professional groups and trade associations that provide support to professionals, researchers and suppliers in the fabricated metal industry. Academic research resources include: Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute (GTMI) www.manufacturing.gatech.edu structure and delivery lead-time in creating mechanical parts and electronic devices Formerly the Manufacturing Research Center (MARC), Georgia Tech’s new Manufacturing Institute (GTMI) has expanded to include researchers from all Georgia Tech’s colleges, the Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI2) and the Georgia Tech Research Institute. With access to academic expertise and cutting-edge equipment, GTMI offers manufacturers the help they need to excel in the marketplace. More than 70 percent of GTMI’s 400,000 square feet of space and state-of-the-art core facilities is paid for by private industry working with GTMI. It includes: • Factory Information Systems: Developing, testing, and launching innovative software and technology that boosts manufacturing efficiency • Precision Machining: Researching and applying technologies for enhanced productivity, part quality, difficult-to-machine features, and machine tool utilization of precision finishing processes • Additive Manufacturing: Using innovative direct digital manufacturing to improve cost Enterprise Innovation Institute http://innovate.gatech.edu The Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute helps companies, entrepreneurs, economic developers and communities improve their competitiveness through the application of science, technology and innovation. Additionally, the Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership (GaMEP) is part of the Enterprise Innovation Institute (EI²) which helps enterprises improve their competitiveness by increasing top-line growth and reduce bottom-line costs. With nine regional offices across the state, GaMEP offers a solution-based approach through coaching, implementation and training. Atlanta has long been the transportation center of the Southeast. With well-maintained highway systems connecting areas around the state to the rest of the nation, products made in Georgia are never far from their markets. Two major rail systems crisscross the state, and two major ports, Savannah and Brunswick, enable manufacturers, fabricators and processors to quickly ship to domestic and global customers. Georgia’s prime location as a transportation hub is crucial. AREA DEVELOPMENT “Top States for Doing Business” Infrastructure and Global Access 1. Tennessee 2. GEORGIA WATER AIR • Savannah is the fastest-growing container port and the fourth-largest in the nation. • In the last five years, intermodal traffic jumped to more than 18 percent of Savannah’s total traffic. • Port expansions and improvements totaling $1 billion are planned over the next 10 years, including deepening of the Savannah River channel which will allow the Port of Savannah to more efficiently accommodate larger cargo and vessel types, exponentially increasing volume. • Interstate highways and rail lines are easily accessible from the port facilities. • Colonel’s Island Terminal in Brunswick is equipped with a multi-purpose facility. • 80 percent of the nation’s major consumer markets are within a two-hour flight of Atlanta. • Georgia has two international airports, Atlanta and Savannah. Five additional airports provide commercial passenger service around the state. • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the world’s busiest in passenger volume. • Hartsfield-Jackson has 1.2 million square feet of cargo handling space and two miles of mechanized conveyors. 3.
