Dear International Students,
Welcome to Vilnius Gediminas Technical University.
Whether you will be here for one or two semesters, we hope that your studies
will be intellectually challenging, culturally inspiring and personally rewarding.
We are happy to expand our international student community and will do our
best to integrate new members not only in the classroom but also through
cultural outings, social initiatives, visits to cultural and business sites.
This guidebook provides with a brief overview of the University, country and
city as well as additional information to help you settle in. Our aim was to
answer frequently asked questions, provide practical hints and information
sources how to live and study in Lithuania.

Faculties and Departmental Coordinators
VGTU has faculties of Architecture, Business Management, Civil Engineering, Electronics, Environmental Engineering,
Fundamental Sciences, Mechanics, Creative Industries and Transport Engineering as well as an Aviation Institute.
The University operates 10 research institutes, 19 research laboratories and 4 research centers. Facilities include the
Center for Continuing Education, Computer Center, International Studies Center, Language Center, University Library,
“Technika” Publishing House, 6 dormitories, recreational facilities, cafés, cafeterias and clubs.
LLP/Erasmus departmental coordinators from each faculty are responsible for advising incoming students on academic
issues, organization of studies, academic regulations and requirements. At the beginning of the semester each departmental coordinator organizes an introductory meeting with incoming students. If students have any questions concerning studies or learning agreements, they should be addressed by the departmental coordinators.

Lithuanian Credit System
The Lithuanian degree system is modular with 40 credits per academic year. The system is a numerical scale
from 10 (excellent) to 1 (very poor). 10 is the highest possible score and 5 is the lowest passing score. 4 and lower
indicates failure.
Note: Plagiarism is unacceptable and will result in a failing grade.

ECTS Credit System
The ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) method is used for all incoming and outgoing students of VGTU. ECTS
credits are a numerical value (between 1 and 60) allocated to course units to describe the required workload. Exchange
students must complete 30 ECTS credits each semester and 60 ECTS credits each academic year. One Lithuanian
credit is equal to 1.5 ECTS credit.
Before starting studies at VGTU, international students must have a signed Learning Agreement that lists all courses to
be completed and the ECTS credit values to be awarded upon successful completion. After completing studies at VGTU,
the faculty will prepare the Transcript of Records and send it directly to the home institution. The Learning Agreement
gives the student a guarantee in advance that they will receive full academic recognition for credits from their approved
programme.
Note: ECTS credits are only awarded to students who successfully complete all course requirements.

VGTU Credit System in Comparison with ECTS:
1 full academic year = 40 VGTU credits / 60 ECTS credits
1 semester = 20 VGTU credits / 30 ECTS credits
1 VGTU credit = 1.5 ECTS credit
Attendance
Students registered for fulltime programs are required to attend classes, seminars, trainings, and laboratories.
Assessments
Student progress is evaluated through intermediate assessments (mid-semester exams, seminar discussions, laboratory work, individual assignments, etc.) and final exams. The final grade combines the intermediate assessment grade
with the final exam grade and possibly class attendance.
Individual assignments, projects and final papers should be completed according to VGTU requirements.
Examination Requirements
Students who earn no points for intermediate appraisals are not allowed to complete the final exam.
Examinations are offered in written form and final exams may be retaken. The examination time for exchange students
can be postponed if an agreement is reached between a student and a lecturer.

VGTU has faculties located in various parts of Vilnius; however, the main university campus is located at
Saulėtekio al. 11. Take trolleybus number 2 to the “Senoji plytinė” stop to reach the main campus. All tickets must be
validated. A taxi from the center to the main campus costs approximately 20 - 25 Lt.

MENTORS
Each incoming student will be assigned a Lithuanian student mentor from VGTU. This mentor will help international
students integrate into life here and will offer insights, directions, practical advice and support. Mentors will contact
students around one month prior to arrival in Lithuania.
LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE COURSE
The Lithuanian Language Course (LLC) offers international students the opportunity to study one of the oldest languages in the world. Both Lithuanian and Latvian are derived from the Baltic branch of the Indo-European family of
languages.
Students can take basic LLC which will help with daily life in Lithuania. Students who plan to attend LLC at VGTU must
mark the corresponding field on the general VGTU Application Form. The courses are free of charge and will be organized at a convenient time. Successful completion of the course is worth 3 ECTS credits.
Alternatively, students can attend the Erasmus Intensive Lithuanian Language Course organized in autumn term and
spring term. The courses will provide basic language skills as well as an overview of the social, cultural, political and
economic situation of Lithuania.

ACCOMODATION
Student Dormitory
University accommodation is assigned on a first come, first served basis. The VGTU foreign student dormitory is
situated on campus about a 10 minute walk from the central building and the faculties of Business Management,
Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Fundamental Sciences. The faculties of Architecture, Electronics,
Mechanics and Transport Engineering are located near the city center, and the Aviation Institute is located near the
International Airport.

Each room is furnished with two beds, two dressers, one closet, one desk, one table and two chairs and each kitchen
is furnished with a sink, refrigerator, electric cooker and cupboards. A blanket, pillow, pillowcase, sheet and towel are
provided for each student. Bedding is changed every ten days, but can be changed more often by request. An optional
room cleaning service is available every day except Saturday and Sunday.
The tap water is potable, and the building has central heating which generally operates from mid-October until earlyApril. Free wireless internet is available throughout the building which can be accessed from personal computers.
Meals are not included in the rent. Students can prepare their own meals in the common kitchens. There is a café,
small market and laundromat close by. Residents can contact the receptionist with any facility related problems such
as electricity and water issues.
The dormitory is locked at night and only guests are allowed to enter and/or be in the dormitory after 11:00 pm.
Dormitory prices vary depending on the location and the type of room. The VGTU dormitory costs approximately
110 EUR per month whereas a private dormitory costs approximately 220 EUR per month. A 400 Lt deposit fee is
required which will be refunded prior to departure provided no property has been damaged.
Note: Accommodation fees must be paid within 3 days of arrival.

Private Flat
It is also possible to rent a flat in the city. The price for a 1 bedroom flat in the city is around 150 - 250 EUR
per month though furnished places tend to be more expensive. A list of real estate agencies is available at
the International Relations Office.

LIBRARY
The primary function of the VGTU library and reading rooms is to provide the university community with access to high
quality research and information. Students must present a student card to use the library services. Publications and
manuals may be checked out for 1 - 6 months depending on available inventory. All publications must be returned by
February 10 for fall semester and by July 10 for spring semester. Students can request to keep materials for longer.
Certain publications are only available for use in the reading rooms.

The 24 hour reading room is accessible during the day or at night with an electronic card. The application form for the
electronic card can be obtained from the reading room, and the card can be obtained free of charge in room 101. The
card can only be used by the person who applies for it, and it is prohibited to give access to anyone from outside of the
university community.
Note: It is necessary to return the card prior to departure or a fine will be applied.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Fotyvas Club
Fotyvas is the photography club which is quick to capture photos at various events around town.
Gabija Choir
A famous Lithuanian choir conductor founded the co-ed choir “Gabija” in 1964. The repertoire includes classical and
contemporary pieces by Lithuanian and foreign composers.
Palėpė Theater Studio
Over thirty people participant in this group which was established in 1999. Activities include acting, costume design,
scenery construction and light and sound engineering.
Tourist Club
The tourist Club of VGTU (VGTU TK) was founded in 1974. Members take part in expeditions and trips all across Lithuania. Activities include hiking, skiing, biking, canoeing and climbing as well as participating in competitions organized by
the Lithuanian Travelers Union and other clubs.
Vingis Folk Ensemble
This troupe made up of dancers and musicians was founded in 1962.Vingis performs at festivals and concerts all over
Lithuania and Europe.

Student Union The Student Union is a voluntary, non-profit organization which was established in 1990. This group represents student
interests on a local and national level. The group also organizes cultural events, concerts and lectures and issues
Lithuanian student cards.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Step 1
The student must be enrolled at an institution of higher education in the home country and be selected by the home
institution to study at VGTU within the LLP/Erasmus programme.
Step 2
The home institution coordinator must inform the VGTU International Relations Office by email or fax that the student
has been selected to study at VGTU within the LLP/Erasmus programme.
Step 3
The student must fill in and send the completed online Application Form (urd.vgtu.lt/form/incoming/), Learning Agreement and Transcript of Records by fax or email AND by post to the VGTU International Relations Office.
Step 4
The VGTU International Relations Office must send a signed Learning Agreement and official invitation letter to the International Relations Office of the home institution.

ARRIVAL
Step 1
The student must inform the International Relations Office of the exact date, time and place of arrival at least two
weeks prior to arrival. A VGTU mentor will then meet the student at the Airport, Bus or Train Station upon arrival.
Step 2
The day after arrival, the student must come to the International Relations Office with all required documents:
a. Passport valid for at least one year;
b. 4 passport size photographs;
c. Health insurance valid for the full duration of stay in Lithuania;
d. Certificate confirming status as an LLP/Erasmus mobility grant recipient and specifying the grant sum
OR income/bank statement (not less than 250 Euro per month)
e. Completed application form for enrollment at VGTU.
Note: LLP/ERASMUS students do not pay tuition or registration fees.
Step 3
Review selected courses and if necessary prepare the Changes to Original Learning Agreement form. Changes to the
learning agreement must be submitted to the VGTU International Relations Office during the first month of studies.
Step 4
At the end of the semester, the student must complete exams, obtain grades, collect teachers’ signatures on the examination card and then return the completed examination card to the International Relations Office.

VISAS
Each student must have a passport valid for at least one year from the initial date of entry into Lithuania.
Citizens from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland do not require a visa to enter Lithuania.
Citizens from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United States and other countries
do not require a visa to enter Lithuania; however, if they plan to stay for more than 90 days, they will need to obtain
a D visa for studies from the Migration Department in Vilnius.
Citizens of Azerbaijan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan and other countries must obtain a visa from the
Embassy of Lithuania in their country prior to arrival in Lithuania.

HEALTH CARE
EU/EEA students temporarily residing in Lithuania are entitled to free health care on the basis of the E111 form, European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a certificate in special cases. Students are required to present the health care
provider with one of these documents as well as proof of identity. Patients who cannot meet these requirements must
cover the cost of treatment on their own.
Students from non-EU/EEA countries must purchase health insurance in their home country prior to arriving in Lithuania.
They will need to pay for medical services in Lithuania and later be reimbursed by their insurance company.

HISTORY
It is believed that the name Lithuania originates from the River Lietava (Lietauka), a tributary of the Neris. It flows about
25 km from the town of Kernavė, an important political center in ancient Lithuania. Lithuania was first mentioned
in 1009 A.D.
Duke Mindaugas united territories and established the state of Lithuania, successfully resisting the eastward expansion
of the Teutonic Knights. In 1253 Mindaugas accepted Christianity for political reason and secured the crown from the
Pope of Rome becoming the first and only king in Lithuanian history.
Grand Duke Vytautas ruled from 1392 until 1430 when Lithuania extended from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. Grand
Duke Vytautas brought great military and political prosperity to the country. Vytautas and his cousin Jogaila defeated
the Teutonic Order at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410.
Lithuania signed the Union of Lublin with Poland in 1569 strengthening ties between the two nations. The agreement
created a Commonwealth Republic of two nations, which shared one ruler and a joint legislature, the Seimas. Nevertheless, Lithuania’s state sovereignty was preserved and the treasury, currency, laws and army remained independent.
From 1654 until 1667, Lithuania became embroiled in wars with Russia, whose strength was increasing. During the
second half of the 18th century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania lost nearly all of its sovereign rights, and the majority of
the territory was partitioned among Russia, Prussia, and Austria. The name “Lithuania” disappeared from the political
map of Europe for 123 years.
Lithuania began to recover at the end of the 19th century during a period known as the “spring of nations”. A struggle to maintain national culture resulted in the reinstitution of writing in Lithuanian and the “book-bearers” movement
which increased literacy and national awareness.
The Council of Lithuania proclaimed the restoration of the Independent Republic of Lithuania on February 16, 1918.
However, in 1940 Lithuania was occupied by Soviet Russia followed by a brief period of Nazi occupation during World
War II. Then Lithuania was again absorbed into the Soviet Union for nearly 50 years declaring independence in 1990.
Lithuania continues to prosper and became a member of NATO on March 29, 2004 and a member of the European Union on May 1, 2004.

GEOGRAPHY
Lithuania is an Eastern European country situated along the Baltic Sea. With an area of 65,300 sq km, Lithuania
is the largest of the three Baltic States. Lithuania borders Latvia in the north, Belarus in the east and south, and
Poland and the Kaliningrad region of Russia in the southwest. Klaipeda is Lithuania’s only commercial port and is
situated where the Curonian Lagoon meets the open sea. The Curonian Spit is a narrow strip of sand dunes which
separates the open sea from the Baltic shoreline.
Lithuania covers 1,823 hectares 30% of which is forested. The landscape is picturesque with rolling hills, rivers,
valleys, forests, and over 3,000 lakes.
Note: The geographical center of Europe is situated in Lithuania about 30 km from the capital, Vilnius.
CLIMATE
The climate varies from maritime to continental with warm summers (average 20°C up to 35°C) and cold winters
(average -5°C down to -20°C).
Note: Warm boots and winter coats are often needed from October to April. However, the summers can be extremely hot. Come prepared for the extremes and everything in between.
DEMOGRAPHICS
Lithuania has a population of approximately 3 million people. A third of the population lives in rural areas and the
rest live in urban zones. The largest city is the capital, Vilnius, with approximately 500,000 inhabitants. Kaunas is
the second largest city with about 300,000 inhabitants.
Lithuania is a relatively homogeneous society with over 80% of the population identifying themselves as Lithuanian followed by 9.4% Russian, 7% Polish, and 3.6% other.
95% of the population is Roman Catholic.
LANGUAGE
Over 80% of Lithuanians consider the Lithuanian language to be their mother tongue. Lithuanian is one of the oldest
languages alive, originating from the Baltic branch of Indo-European languages along with German, Roman and Slavic
languages. Lithuanian also retains the nominal morphology found in Sanskrit and Latin. Lithuanian utilizes an adapted
version of the Roman alphabet allowing foreigners to easily read text.
Although most Lithuanians are fluent in English, it is less common outside of large cities. It is always useful to know
key phrases, so here is an introductory lesson.

Lithuania is a parliamentary republic governed by a democratically elected Parliament known as the Seimas. The Seimas consists of 141 members elected for 4 year terms and the President is elected by direct vote for a term of 5 years.

CURRENCY
The Lithuanian Litas (plural Litai) is the official currency of Lithuania and is denoted as LTL or Lt. The bills come in
denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Lt. There are two categories of coins: heavier and more valuable
coins in denominations of 1, 2 and 5 Lt and nearly weightless and valueless coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20
and 50 centai/centų. The Litas exchange rate is tied to the euro (EUR) at a rate of 3.4528 Lt to 1 EUR. Most places in
Vilnius accept credit cards, and ATMs can be found throughout the city and in shopping centers. Traveller’s checks can
be redeemed for cash in hotels and banks, but cannot be used as currency in other establishments. For those planning
trips outside of major urban areas, it is best to take cash along as ATMs are not always available.

The Holiday of the Three Kings is celebrated with a procession through Old Town and events at Cathedral Square.
Užgavėnės (7 weeks before Easter)
Užgavėnės is the traditional celebration to bid farewell to winter. The celebration corresponds with Roman Catholic traditions in other parts of the world, such as Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, and Carnaval. During this time, an effigy of winter
called morė is burned and different masked characters including devils, goats, gypsies, witches, and the grim reaper
gather to dance and eat the traditional dish of the holiday, pancakes. Gavėnia fasting begins right after Užgavėnės in
preparation for Easter, so everyone must eat pancakes and other treats during this time. This celebration is held in various locations including Gediminas, Tauras Hill, City Hall Square and Rumšiškės Park.
Kaziukas Fair (the first weekend of March)
Kaziukas Fair is an open air market held during the first weekend of March each year. The fair is held in honor of the
Patron Saint of Lithuania, St. Kazimieras. Weavers, smiths, potters, and other artisans come from all over Lithuania to
sell their handcrafted products. Enjoy traditional food, drink and music along Gediminas, Pilies, Didžioji, Vokiečių and
Rūdininkų Streets.
Cinema Spring (end of March)
The international film festival “Cinema Spring” is organized at the end of March each year. The festival includes original
films from around the world including Lithuanian productions. The festival is usually held at Vingis Cinema over the
course of several days.

Easter
Many people attend mass on this day.
Families then gather to display and compare creatively painted, dyed and decorated Easter eggs. Various celebratory
events take place in the squares and the courtyards of Old Town.
Poetry spring (May)
The annual festival “Poetry Spring” takes place in May. The laureate of Poetry Spring is traditionally crowned in Kaunas
with the final celebration taking place in the Sarbievius Courtyard at Vilnius University.
Instrumental Spring (the last weekend of May)
This international festival consists of folk songs and traditional dances by musicians, singers and dancers from Lithuania and abroad. Join over 20,000 spectators in Old Town and Sereikiškių Park to partake in the festivities.
St. John’s Day (June 24)
This holiday takes place on the longest day/shortest night of the year and is also known as Midsummers Night, Cupola
or Dew Day. Holiday traditions include floating grass wreathes on water, singing, dancing, drinking, jumping over bonfires, telling fortunes and searching for a magic blossom at midnight. The celebration comes to an end with the rising of
the sun. Festivities take place on the bank of Neris River in Vilnius and in Kernavė.
Vilnius Music Festival (July) Fans of jazz, classical and traditional music gather in Vilnius concert halls and venues for
performances throughout July. The festival attracts a wide range of musicians each year and continues to grow in popularity.
Capital City Days (September)
Capital City Days celebrates the transition of the seasons from summer to autumn and events take place throughout
September. One highlight is the Francis Market at City Hall Square where vendors sell local handcrafts, chefs cook up
Lithuanian cuisine and bands play traditional music. Other activities range from a procession, fireworks and theater performances to international exhibitions, sports contests and beer festivals. This celebration has something for everyone.
Christmas (December 1 - 26)
Christmas celebrations begin in December with visits from Santa Clause, lighting of the Christmas tree and performances at City Hall Square and Vingis Park. The events take place from December 1 - 26.
New Year (December 26 - January 2)
The new year is celebrated with concerts and fireworks in Kalnų Park, Vingis Parks, Cathedral Square, and City Hall
Squares as well as classical music concerts at the National Philharmonic Society, Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Congress
Palace, and St. John’s Church.

Here are recommendations for places to visit in Lithuania. It is possible to explore the country by bus, train, car, plane and
even hot air balloon.
Anykščiai
Anykščiai is a town situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Šventoji and Anykšta, in eastern Lithuania. It was first mention in July 1440. The small town is known for its picturesque countryside including 76 lakes and also serves as a ski resort
in the winter.
The Curonian Spit
The Curonian Spit is an extraordinary piece of land along the Baltic coast designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and
a national park. The quaint villages of Smiltynė, Alksnynė, Juodkrantė, Pervalka, Preila and Nida dot the huge strip of sand.
The island is forested with linden, elm, birch and pine and hosts a wide range of wildlife, beautiful beaches and a unique
group of hardy fishermen. Highlights include a bike ride along the coast, a visit to the striking dunes, and a walk up Witches
Hill.
Druskininkai
Druskininkai is the main spa town in Lithuania due to the mineral water springs and curative mud baths. This popular getaway is also where M. K. Čiurlionis, the famous painter and composer, lived and worked.
Grūtas Park
Grūtas Park exhibits an extensive collection of statues and busts of Soviet leaders including Lenin, Stalin and others. The
statues, which were erected all over Lithuania during the Soviet occupation, have now been transported to a single location
and are displayed throughout the park. The exposition is intended to criticize Soviet ideology and influence.
The Hill of Crosses
The Hill of Crosses (Kryžių kalnas) is located 11 km from Šiauliai in the direction of Riga and is a symbol of people’s faith
and freedom of expression. Since 1961, the Soviet Union destroyed the crosses on this hill 4 times but hope springs eternal. Now there are thousands of crosses of different sizes and styles. Pope Paul II held Mass at the Hill of Crosses during his
visit to Lithuania. People say that if you leave a cross there, your dreams will come true!

Kaunas
Kaunas is called the “temporary capital” of Lithuania because it was utilized as an alternate capital during times of occupation. It is the second largest city in Lithuania situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris. The city is
famous for its basketball team “Žalgiris” and a splendidly restored Old Town. Highlights include a visit to Freedom Avenue,
the M.K.Čiurlionis Art Gallery, Vytautas Church built in the 14th century, Liberty Square, the “War Museum” and the 11th
century Kaunas Castle.
Kernavė
Kernavė was the first Lithuanian capital in 1279. The Kernavė Archaeological Site is about 35 km northwest of Vilnius and
gives testimony to 10 millennia of human settlements in this region. Situated in the valley of the River Neris, this unique
archaeological area includes the town of Kernavė, forts, unfortified settlements, burial sites and other remnants from the
late Paleolithic period to the Middle Ages.
Klaipėda
Founded in 1252, Klaipėda is the third-largest city in Lithuania, situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea. As a key port city in
the European Union, it is a window to the world of international trade for Lithuania. The city, once known as Memel, still has
a German feel in places and the Old Town features cobblestone streets and antique lampposts on nearly every street corner. The main draw for tourists is the city’s location at the mouth of the Danė River with ferry access to the Curonian Spit.
Palanga
Palanga is one of the most developed resort cities in Lithuania. Although it is a year-round travel destination, it is most
popular as a summer resort. Palanga is best known for its beaches, pier, song festivals, symphony concerts and beauty
competitions.
Rumšiškės
Rumšiškės is 15 kilometers from Kaunas. It is one of the largest open air museums in Europe which presents a rich mosaic
of ancient Lithuanian villages, regions (Aukštaitija, Dzūkija, Suvalkija, Žemaitija) and traditions all in one place. Personal
residences, grain sheds, barns, and other farmsteads have been moved from various ethnographic regions and set against
the breathtaking backdrop of the Kaunas Sea. There are many activities to enjoy including a horseback riding, riding in
a carriage or observing master craftsmen at work. Folk concerts and holiday festivals are held at the museum grounds
throughout the year.
Trakai
The quaint, lakeside town of Trakai is about an hour from Vilnius. Trakai is a former capital of Lithuania famous for the
island castle built in 14th Century. The castle is a popular tourist destination and the museum has exhibits on Lithuanian
Grand Dukes and historic findings. Other highlights of Trakai include boating on the lake, visiting the Karaime Museum and
sampling kibinė, a meat pastry characteristic of this region.

The capital city, Vilnius, is situated in south-eastern Lithuania (54°41” north latitude and 25°17” east longitude) at the
confluence of the River Vilnelė and the River Neris. Vilnius is one of the country’s oldest cities founded by Duke Gediminas in 1323. In 1860, the first railway in Lithuania connected Vilnius with St. Petersburg and Warsaw. Vilnius is located
about 312 km from the Baltic Sea and Klaipėda. Other cities such as Kaunas, Šiauliai, and Panevėžys are located near
to the capital. The geographical center of Europe and former Lithuanian capitals Trakai and Kernavė are all located in
Vilnius County.
Vilnius has an active social and cultural scene due to a population of over 500,000 and the presence of academic
institutions, businesses, government offices and foreign embassies. Vilnius offers a great variety of theaters, orchestras,
festivals, museums, libraries, restaurants, bars and clubs.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
The public transportation system in Vilnius is well developed and includes trolleybuses, buses, minibuses and taxis. The
information board at each stop displays bus routes and schedules. There is generally a 5 - 10 minute interval between
trolleybuses and a 10 - 15 minute interval between buses. Minibuses will let passengers in and out at will and move
fast, so the cost is 3 Lt (~0.9 EUR). Bus and trolleybus monthly tickets can be purchased at an 80% discount from
kiosks with a Lithuanian Student card or ISIC student card.
Note: It is possible to receive a fine of 60 - 100 Lt (17.50 - 29 EUR) if traveling without a ticket.
Taxis can also be an affordable option as long as they are ordered by phone.

There are many grocery stores of differing sizes around Vilnius. The opening hours vary by location; however, stores are

In 1671, Carmelites built a chapel in the gates housing the image of the Virgin Mary, reputed for miracle-working powers. The chapel interior was refurbished in the neo-classical style in 1829 and should not be missed.
Pilies street is probably the most frequently visited market place for folk art in Vilnius. It is a great place to pick up gifts
for friends and family. Many festivals and processions also pass through this bustling Street.
Continue down Vokiečių or Trakų streets to experience the spirit of Old Town, which is the largest of all the historic
towns in Eastern Europe (360 hectares). Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site with preserved Gothic, Baroque,
Renaissance and Classical architecture.
The top of Gediminas Tower offers a panoramic view of Old Town and the Neris River. The red brick tower is the only
remaining portion of the Higher Castle which was constructed in the 13 - 14th centuries. The castle museum includes
historical displays of armor, swords, ancient coins and additional remnants.
The National Museum is situated close to Gediminas Hill and is the largest and oldest source of Lithuanian cultural heritage. More than 785,000 exhibits are stored here including coins, medals, historical engravings and maps. The exhibits
are displayed in chronological order to reflect the evolution of the country. In the ethnography exhibit, the modes of life
in various regions of Lithuania are displayed.
At the foot of Gediminas Hill is the famous Cathedral which was reconstructed in the 18th century by the well-known
Lithuanian architect Laurynas Gucevičius. A pagan temple once stood in this place, then a Roman Catholic Church and
now the Cathedral. The Cathedral Square is a popular place for fairs, parades, concerts and celebrations and a wide
range of people always gather here.
St. Anne’s church, built in 1501, is another church which deserves attention. It was Napoleon Bonaparte’s dream to
carry this church back to Paris in the palm of his hand. Luckily, the church remains in the heart of Vilnius.
The Genocide Museum is the former KGB headquarters. Displays include genuine prison cells, torture chambers, interrogations rooms, a collection of confiscated literature and information about the Soviet occupation.

PICK UP SERVICE
A VGTU mentor will meet each student upon arrival at the Airport, Bus or Train Station as long as the student informs
the International Relations Office of travel plans at least two weeks prior to arrival.
BY PLANE
There are three international airports in Lithuania: Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga. Vilnius International Airport is a small
but efficient airport with currency exchange and simple cafes. There are direct flights to several European cities and new
flights are constantly being added, included several budget options. The city center can be reached by bus, train or taxi
and is about a 20 minute drive by car from the airport.

It is also possible to reach Lithuania by flying into a neighboring country such as Latvia and then taking a bus to Vilnius.
BY TRAIN
Vilnius is connected by train to many cities inside and outside of Lithuania.
Note: It is advisable to select a train that does not enter Belarusian territory. A transit visa must be obtained in advance
for all passengers on transport which enters Belarusian territory, even if they stay on the train.
From the Train Station, take trolley bus number 2 to the “Senoji plytinė” stop on Saulėtekio al. A single ticket will cost
2 Lt if purchased from a kiosk and 2.5 Lt if purchased on the bus. A taxi to the city center costs approximately 10 Lt and
a taxi to the VGTU main campus costs approximately 20 Lt.
