Dear Parents and Carers
Preparations are well in hand for next week’s Learning Journey. Two of the features for our 2015 Learning
Journey, apart from the rich learning that is taking part in every classroom, are the investment we have made in
ICT to enhance the children’s tools for learning and the introduction of the Kids Matter program as a vehicle to
continue to create a positive school environment.
Have you seen our “Every Face has a Place” board in the hallway outside the staffroom? It’s a work in progress
but it has initiated thoughtful discussion between children and staff about respectfully valuing each other.
Another initiative of the Kids Matter committee is the introduction of very special FRIENDS values cards to be
used by teachers to recognise children who are displaying FRIENDS values on the playground. If the child
receives a card they are able to put this into the watermelon, balloon or crazy rainbow box near the Kids Matter
wall. At each assembly, a card will be selected and a small incentive awarded. Having a safe and supportive
environment for children, staff and community members is a core belief held by us all and this initiative is
certainly a positive first step.
The Wizard of Oz production by year 5/6 is getting closer and tickets are selling fast. If you would like to
attend either of the evening performances, please order from the Front Office. All children from P-6 will have
the opportunity to see the performance on the dress rehearsal afternoon, Tuesday 22nd September. Selected
students from Duffy, Arawang and Mt Stromlo High will also be attending.
40th Anniversary Celebrations
I know the school community is looking forward to Saturday evening’s Trivia Night. I suspect that there will be
several questions relating to the school’s history over the past 40 years. If you are a past student you will have a
big advantage! If you are a past student/parent or friend and have any interesting memorabilia, we are
beginning to collect this to create a display for our Special Birthday assembly/Open Morning on Tuesday 20th
October. Clearly labelled items can be left at the Front Office and will be returned following the event. If you
know of any past Principal, teacher, important person that you think may like to attend the birthday event, can
we have their details so we can send them an invitation. Please contact the Front Office on 62057300.
I am looking forward to another great Trivia night and thank the P&C for their organisation. Our appreciation
also goes to the group of parents who facilitated the Father’s Day stall last week. I saw many happy children,
excited that they could select and purchase something special for their dad, grandfather or relative.
Some reminders:
Parking off Perry Drive at the end of the school day is again becoming congested and unsafe. The kerbside is
for set down and pick up only. If you arrive at school prior to 3.00pm PLEASE DO NOT PARK on the
kerbside pull in area as it hold the traffic flow up and impinges on the safety of the children.
Dogs are not allowed on the school grounds.
I have noticed some children arriving before 8 am. Unless involved in netball practice organised by Mrs Ohare,
children should not left before 8.30.
If you need to get to work or for another reason, After School Care operates a Before School program.

Lost Property is overflowing. It is checked by some lovely parent volunteers when they are able, for clearly

Sporting News
Milo Blast Cricket Cup
Our school had a total of seven teams
attend the Milo Blast Cricket Cup last
Wednesday. The boys thoroughly enjoyed
day and performed well. We were
particularly pleased with the behaviour and
sportsmanship of the boys. We received a
number of reports saying how well the
students conducted themselves on the day.
Congratulations to all boys who attended. A
big thank you to the following parents who

Anthony Stuart, Emir Rindipati, Steve Corby and Michael Strecker. Your support was greatly appreciated. A
number of our teams have qualified for the finals to be played later in the year. We wish them the best of luck!
The girls are playing today and we are looking forward to hear how they enjoyed the day.

Preschool
We are very excited about the arrival of spring. We have been
watching the blossom coming out on the preschool trees and
sharing what we know about spring time. This has inspired us
to create some lovely art work.
Our Zumba classes with Susan are continuing, and we are
learning new dances every week. The fine weather has enabled us to dance
outside and the extra space has made the experience more enjoyable.
The pre-schoolers will be visiting the canteen next week as part of their
transition program. They will choose and buy a small treat and then have a play
in the junior playground.
We would like to thank the gardening committee for the recent working bee. We
have new plants which will grow and help create a more interesting outside environment. The children are
enjoying watering and caring for the new plants.

Kindergarten - The Garden
Kindergarten continues our busy days with a smile on all our faces. We have been having a
lovely time enjoying the extracurricular activities of late.
Everyone looked fabulous in their Book Week costumes. We had a lovely time playing at
being our character and even more importantly we have all began talking about books we
love to read and discovering new books we would like to read.
Next week is Learning Journey time. Junior school parents are invited to join their children in their classroom
on Tuesday 15 September from 8:30am to 9:45am or 2:00pm to 3:15pm. Parents are welcome at one of these
times and are taken on a guided tour of their child’s learning. The children share their work displayed around
the room, their workbooks and other learning areas like the Indonesian room.
A big thank you to all the helpers who have been able to change our home readers in the afternoon. Your help
is always greatly appreciated.

Year 1 - Where the Forest Meets the Sea
We had a wonderful time at the Australian National Botanic Gardens on
Monday. We discovered that the gardens are a great habitat for many
animals. At first, we thought there was nothing in the ponds but when
we looked closely we found some very tiny creatures. We also saw
some quite large animals including water dragons and black cockatoos.
Although we didn’t see any bilbies we explored the new desert habitat
where we are sure they would feel at home.
On Tuesday we had great fun whizzing around the school on our bikes
and scooters. Congratulations to Tom from 1PA and Teagan from 1TK on winning the prize for wearing such
bright clothes and being very easy to see!
Congratulations also go to those students who have achieved 100 nights of home reading! We can’t wait to see
if anyone can make 150 nights by the end of the year.
Don’t forget our learning journey is on this Tuesday the 15th of September. The morning session is from
8:30am to 9:45 am and afternoon session from 2:00pm until 3:15pm. We look forward to seeing everyone then.

Year 2 – Animalia
Year Two have been busy this fortnight experimenting with different substances
and seeing how they combine and change in our Integrated Inquiry unit ‘All
Mixed Up’. There were minor explosions in the school hall when we were
visited by Patrick from Questacon’s travelling chemistry show ‘Excited
Particles’ and the students were highly engaged with this very stimulating show.
Students have begun writing some seasonal poetry and have been enjoying the
freedom and creativity this text form allows. We were really impressed with the
effort families went to in dressing up for the Awesome August Book Week
celebrations and loved seeing the children having conversations about their
character, favourite books and authors.
Our Wheels Day was a success and the students enjoyed navigating their way
through the scooter or bike courses. It was lovely to see all the fluorescent
colours in our classrooms.
Next week is the Learning Journey where students invite parents and carers into their classroom and show off
their hard work. Each student has taken home an invitation to the event with a section to be returned indicating
when their parent or carer will be attending. It would be appreciated if these could be returned as soon as
possible so the teachers know when to be expecting guests. We look forward to seeing you there.

Year 3 – The Tree House
Year 3 has been a hive of activity this week with students solving real life problems by coming up with
inventions to meet a specific purpose. Students have embarked on projects that solve the problem of doonas
falling off beds through the night or socks falling down when playing sports just to name a few. We can’t wait
to see the finished projects and look forward to sharing their progress at the Learning Journey being held on the
17th September.
The teachers have been very impressed with the students application of their knowledge of fractions in Maths
Groups and look forward to teaching money next week. The main aim will be for students to learn about and
demonstrate their ability to add money and give change to the 5 cent. Students already achieving this will be
challenged with more complex problems using money.
The fluro wheels day was a huge success with many of the students dressing up in their brightest clothes.
Students enjoyed riding their bikes and scooters around the obstacle course.
With the weather warming up many students are removing jumpers in the playground and in class. It’s a
particularly good time to ensure that your child's name is clearly labelled on their clothing and has not faded
through time. We also acknowledge the importance of hydration to stay focussed during activities and
encourage all students to bring a water bottle to school to have regular drinks throughout the day.
Congratulations to all the boys and girls who participated in the cricket over the last two weeks and we wish all
of the singer's the best in their upcoming Floriade performance.

Year 4 – The Land Of Oz
During English, Year 4 are developing skills to write interesting and engaging Narratives. Students have been
following a ‘recipe’ using a variety of sentence starters to write descriptive paragraphs. We are sure you will be
impressed with the results.
Construction is well underway on the roller coasters which children have designed and are building using the
skills developed in last week’s technology challenges. It has been great to see them applying the skills using a
variety of materials, techniques and joins to create some extraordinary rides. We look forward to sharing these
and our other quality work at next week learning journey.
This Friday, Year 4 will be hosting assembly. It will be a showcase of much of our work from this term with
many students being allocated speaking roles. The assembly will commence at 12:10 and we would love to see
you there.

Year 5/6 – Superheroes
Well it’s all hotting up here in 5/6 land!! We are busy fine tuning our musical ready for showtime. Props are
being finalised costumes are arriving and we are busy learning our finale. Please send in any last minute
costume parts so that we can be sure all students have their belongings ready for performing.
Over the last few weeks, we have taken part in an online webinar about Cyber Bullying. We found that there
were a number of ideas discussed that has helped us to become more informed about how to handle social
media. Please have a discussion at home to see what your child can tell you about these sessions.
Many classes have been onto Google Classroom and are becoming familiar with this resource. We are working
hard to not only improve IT skills, but improve the way that we access student work as this resource will
eliminate the need to email work or pop it onto a USB. So far we have loved the experience and have found its
benefits worthwhile.
We look forward to seeing you at Learning Journey next week as we have some great work that we have been

Excursion Medical Permission
It is the responsibility of the parent to notify the school of any medical issues and/or medications that their child
is taking. All students attending an excursion must have a current Excursion Medical Permission note
completed. If the information that you provided on your child’s 2015 Excursion Medical Information form has
changed since the beginning of this year (e.g. medications), please complete a new form for your child prior to
this excursion. The Excursion Medical form is available from the school website or at the front office.
Reminder
A reminder to parents and carers that when completing permission forms for your children, that they MUST be
completed in pen, not lead or coloured pencil. We thank you for your cooperation.

Father's Day Stall
The Father's Day Stall was a great success, raising almost $1,400 for the P&C. It was great to see the
excitement on the children's faces as they came into the stall and made their purchases. I hope the dad’s were
just as excited to receive their gifts. Thank you to all the parents who donated gifts for the Father's Day Stall
and who helped out with wrapping gifts, setting up and running the stall. I would also like to thank our
corporate sponsors, Woolworths Weston Creek, Kmart Belconnen, Supabarn and Big W Canberra City, who
donated 100 gifts for the stall. If you'd like to provide any feedback regarding the fundraising activities at the
school please come along to the P&C meetings.

With winter sports coming to a close, are you thinking about how to keep your children fit and healthy over the
summer? Wouldn’t it be great to have all of your children enjoying sport together at the same venue, at the
same time, every week? Weston Creek Little Athletics offers a variety of fun for children aged 5 to 16 years.
Whether your children prefer running around a track, jumping the long jump in the sand, the high jump onto a
mat or they just like to throw, there is something to suit everyone. Come along and join in the fun at Weston
Creek Little Athletics this summer. Who knows, they might just make some new friends along the way.
We meet at Chapman Oval on Saturday mornings throughout the spring and summer and are all about children

Book Stall at the Fete - Is it time to spring clean your bookshelf?
Due to the school's 40th Birthday celebrations, donations for the book stall cannot be accepted at school until
after Monday 26th October, but please start collecting. We would love your donations for the bookstall at the
fete. We accept donations of books, records, CDs, DVDs, board games and puzzles in good condition. (No
encyclopaedias, magazines or white elephant items please).
