Back in the day, as a teenager, Wellington-born Wayne Scholes was the kit manager/kit boy for the Telford Tigers ice hockey team. A number of people who worked with Wayne at Telford Tigers have expressed delight that he has returned, especially as the owner! W AYNE was a born salesman. At school he would sell toffees that he had made himself, getting his mother to buy more ingredients from the profits he made. He said: “My dad was an army chef and his recipe for toffee made lots more toffee that the family could eat, so there was always some left over for me to sell at school. After a while, I started to make it myself!” The toffee selling enterprise was brought to a sudden halt. Nothing to do with ‘healthy’ eating -this was back in the 1980s, after all!but it concerned someone taking umbrage that a pupil The extraordinary story of local boy, Wayne Scholes. was -gasp!- making a profit. An early lesson for Wayne that cued him in to the fact that some people are resentful of success. But this had given Wayne a taste for sales, and so sales was where Wayne’s heart was and still is. He worked as a sales representative and sales manager for a number of national and international firms, often covering the whole of the UK. He said at the time: “When you know the one-way systems of every major town in the UK, you know you really are doing a lot of mileage!” He then spent time in Switzerland, France and Ireland before heading to America where he married Amber and began raising a family. He was marketing director for Virgin North America, when he was headhunted by a South African-based firm and after working for them for several years decided to launch what was to become Red Touch Media. He returned to live in the USA and now Red Touch Media is a global player in the field of content creation and management, working with a vast number of international concerns. On its website Red Touch Media states: “Red Touch Media connects content owners, advertisers, retailers and consumers to premium digital content via the world’s most innovative distribution platform.” So there’s a good chance that if you view or use content from global brands that you have unwittingly used the services provided by > Above: Fans young and old have flocked back to watch the Tigers. Wayne still has family in Wellington who he visits regularly. His brother Martin is a news editor working for Partnership Publishing in Wellington, brother Marc is president/dean of a university in Canada and his sister Petra and mom live in Wellington. Why did Wayne decide to buy the Telford Tigers? He told Wrekin News: “They asked Red Touch Media to become a corporate sponsor. After exploratory meetings with them we decided to sponsor the club. They are an ambitious team, hungry for success. But I knew that something was lacking. I realised that what they needed was not just a sponsor to help cover the bills, but a new owner who could really help fund the Telford Tigers for the success that have been proved wrong.” Red Touch Media has offices in America, South Africa and several in the UK and he is looking to have an office in Telford, chiefly for the Telford Tigers. He has examined several properties which he feels show considerable promise. He went on to say: “We need a strong presence in the town. In a comparatively short period of time we have managed to massively increase the gates at Telford Tigers’ matches. “I know there are a lot of ice hockey fans in not only Telford but in Shropshire and the rest of the West Midlands and over the border in Wales. For a vari- ety of reasons, historically, ice hockey fans have not been particularly well served in this region. Attempts to launch teams in Wolverhampton and Birmingham failed, so perhaps surprisingly the Telford Tiger’s are the only professional ice hockey team in the entire area.” He explained: “We want to extend a warm invitation to all ice hockey fans from the Welsh borders, from all over Shropshire and the West Midlands to come and enjoy the happy, familyfriendly atmosphere at the Telford Tigers’ games. “We were aware that the Sochi Winter Olympics would increase public awareness and interest in many winter sports, but especially the exciting team sport of ice hockey. And we want the Telford Tigers team to benefit from this growing awareness of ice hockey.” Telford Tigers lost their chance of English Premier League play-off glory, after losing by just one goal to Guildford Flames, 7-6 aggregate. However, it’s the first time Telford Tigers got so far in nearly two decades and there’s always next season to look forward to. And Wayne has some ambitious plans for not only Telford Tigers but for several other exciting projects, too. As they say: “Watch this space!” Buckatree Hall Hotel Tel: 01952 641 821 Sunday Lunch 3 course £12.95 > Tigers celebrate after scoring. the team so richly deserves. “And this is precisely what we have been able to do. Lightmoor View on Brick Kiln Bank was commended by specialist nurses from Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Groups during a road trip to mark national Dignity Day. The trip saw safeguarding teams from the two CCGs visit 49 different homes, where predominantly elderly residents receive an element specialist care, to talk about the importance of always treating people with dignity and respect. Christine Morris, Executive Nurse from Telford and Wrekin CCG, said: “We were so impressed by the work of staff at Lightmoor View. They are beacons of good practice. “Dignity covers all aspects of daily life, including respect, privacy and selfworth,” she said. “Staff at Lightmoor View treat people in their care with dignity and respect and are actively encouraged to speak up if they have any concerns. “Dignity is a very personal thing that can be difficult to define,” said Ms Morris. “What is clear is that people know they have when they have not been treated with dignity and respect.” Work is underway on the second phase of the regeneration of Hadley centre, a £900,000 scheme following the completion of phase one last year. The latest developments include demolition of Gladstone House, a new pedestrian link to the flyover, construction of three new retail units and the repaving of High Street. The three new units will provide 4,000 sq ft of space all of which are pre-let to Gladstone Veterinary Clinic, a Polish Supermarket and Wrekin Housing Trust. It should be completed at the end of June. The Borough is talking with residential developers for the sale of the Haybridge Road car park and the re- ON YOUR PATCH… maining Gladstone House units. The site benefits from outline planning consent for 24 dwellings. The aim is for the sale to be completed in time to enable the final phase of construction to begin in late summer. Throughout the regeneration, Telford & Wrekin Council has been working in partnership with Hadley & Leegomery Parish Council to drive forward improvements to provide a more inviting centre with modern shops and services for residents. The second phase follows up the completion of the opening stage of the regeneration last year, which saw 12 retail units and maisonettes demolished and seven new units built, including a Tesco Express. The second phase is partly funded by Telford & Wrekin Council and partly by the Homes and Communities Agency. The council has demolished a further eight retail unit and 12 flats to create space for the development. It included Scouts and Cubs, parents, ward member Councillor Angela McClements, McDonald’s and West Mercia Police. Cache In Trash Out is a green initiative backed by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers worldwide have worked to improving open spaces and other cache-friendly places. Geocachers celebrate International Cache In Trash Out weekend annually by hosting and participating in events, lo- cally. These can focus on litter clean up, revegetation efforts or building trails. The Arleston event used a GPS receiver. Volunteers collected 23 bags of rubbish in Kingsland, Charles Road, Princess Avenue and Chartwell Road. At the end a heaviest bag weigh-in was held and various prizes awarded. Councillor McClements said: “This was an excellent event and combined a bit of fun with a serious purpose of cleaning up our local environment. It was a great opportunity for organisations to get together and take pride in their community.” Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “This is the kind of fun communityspirited approach that makes improving local communities almost effortless with everyone pulling together.” 08 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk 8, 9 Your Patch.indd 1 31/03/2014 11:33 TRENCH On twentieth March 70 people played for the David Wright Trophy at the Wrockwardine Wood/ Trench Labour Club. RELIGIONS AROUND THE WREKIN T O MY mind, one of the most interesting things about the human race is that we are all different. Long ago, when I was a lad, there were just a few religious differences in Wellington; you were Church of England, Methodist, Baptist or Roman Catholic and that was it. Nowadays there are far more choices. Even my own religion has changed over the years. I was christened in New Street Methodist Church, then confirmed in the Church of England at St Peters, Wrockwardine and for a time regularly attended Christ Church, Wellington. Nearly twenty years ago I became a Quaker (a member of the Religious Society of Friends), which I still am. I’m convinced that we should respect each other’s right to be different so you won’t find any criticism of other faiths here. Please forgive me for concentrating on Wellington; it’s the place I know best and if I included all the religious buildings in the whole county of The Wrekin this would be a boring list. Still most people round The Wrekin are, or consider themselves, Christian, though a large number seldom attend their church except for weddings and funerals. Perhaps the most common religious belief is agnostic and there are many atheists. The largest Christian church is All Saints Church, which is Church of England, Evangelical in its outlook. It has the oldest building, built GEORGE EVANS WRITES ABOUT DIFFERENT RELIGIONS AND CHURCHES AROUND THE WREKIN > Two Wellington churches in the 1960s in 1790, to replace an older church going back to at least the 13th Century. Christ Church in New Church Road is Anglo-Catholic. It was built as a Chapel of Ease in 1839 and changed from Evangelical to AngloCatholic by its Vicar, Rev. JP Abbey. There are several other old and new Anglican churches in surrounding towns and villages. The Methodist Church in New Street, a new building on the old site, also serves many social functions; again the district has many more. A few years ago an older building was demolished because of the high cost of maintenance. The building was less important than the congregation. St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church has recently had an increase in numbers and some masses are now said in Polish. A previous Catholic church in Mill Bank became a school, then a cinema and has been demolished. The Union Free Church in Constitution Hill has a joint membership of Baptists and Congregationists. It has an interesting similarity to St Patrick’s - both were planned with a spire and neither spires were added because of the cost. One recent Christian church is the House of Prayer held in the old Town Hall over the market. There may be other ‘house churches’ in the area - I don’t know. A lively Pentecostal Church on Tan Bank has mainly (but not exclusively) Afro-Caribbean members. Their building was originally the Sunday school of the Primitive Methodists, who merged with Wesleyan Methodists in New Street. It’s called the First Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Mormons in Glebe Street has increased numbers and has added a new building in Lawley. Jehovah’s Witnesses meet at Plough Road, Wrockwardine Wood and Springfield Christian Fellowship at Tweedale Industrial Estate. The Salvation Army meets in Lion Street, Oakengates and has buildings of various kinds throughout the area serving their work with those in need, as well as a shop in Wellington. Some Greek Orthodox worshipers have joined the Anglican churches but the Serbian Orthodox Church has a church in Donnington. Many are the descendants of European Voluntary Workers who came here after the Last World War. There is an old tradition of charismatic preachers round The Wrekin, including John Fletcher, Vicar of Madeley, Dr Cranage in Wellington and the Ketley man, S. Parkes Cadman, who began the tradition of popular radio preachers in America. In Telford’s ‘Town Centre’ is Meeting Point House, where we Quakers meet. There are, I’m told, five other churches in the same building including an Anglican/ Methodist church, some Nigerian Christians and a Chinese Christian church whom I have heard singing traditional English Christmas Carols delightfully in Chinese. Probably the fastest growing religious group is Islam. There are three Mosques in Wellington; the main one in Tan Bank used to be a Primitive Methodist Church. Also there is another that is growing from a house in Regent Street and a third Islamic Centre in the old Drill Hall, in King Street. The first I visited was at Christ Church Hall, where newly arrived Muslims met for Eid ul Fitr and I was able to welcome them. There are also large numbers of Sikhs in our area, who have their Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in the old school building in Hadley. The Sikh community gave generously to the Friends of the Princess Royal Hospital, presenting the chairman, my late wife, with a cheque. I do not know where Hindus meet; please tell me if you do. There are a few Buddhists also in Hadley including an old friend DD Ahir. Jews have no local Synagogue and the few local ones I know visit a Synagogue in Wolverhampton. There is a Spiritualist church in Watling Street I’m told. Over the years I have attended services at Methodist, Anglican, Roman Catholic, Congregational, Baptist, Mormon and Pentecostal churches as well as my own Quaker meetings. Also I’ve visited Muslim Mosques and Sikh Gurdwaras. I have always found the people friendly, welcoming and peaceful. All the religions I know and most people with no religion support the idea of peace. We can show our commitment to peace, by having no enemies or we can, quietly, with no fuss or getting permission, honour the life of someone we were fond of. We can plant something in Wellington Peace Garden. The garden is in front of the new library and it’s beginning to be beautiful in spring. It will cost you the plant and the effort of planting it; that’s all. Just do what you think is right; it probably is. The incident happened on June 20 1944. It is thought that 2nd Lt Clifford W. Jensen had suffered a mid-air collision after some practice aerobatics. He left the formation, turning right before ditching his aircraft. One witness described the aircraft as approaching from the direction of the Wrekin ‘like a ball of fire’. The force of the impact and resulting massive explosion saw the stricken aircraft dashed to pieces. Eyewitnesses watched as pieces of fuselage rained down onto the Bull Ring, while other large chunks were seen burning in nearby gardens. Shrapnel broke windows in nearby houses, shops and the Bull’s Head public house which is still on the corner of the road with Dawley Bank. Two witnesses, one a garage mechanic from Princes End and the other Mr Ernie (Enoch) Rigby, who had just left the Bull’s Head as the incident occurred, saw the plane crash. Mr Rigby made heroic efforts to save the pilot, sadly without success, being forced back by heat and smoke. Locals from all around came out of their homes Ron Munt, who represents a new group in Lawley called Lawley Bank and Friends Wartime Memory Group, dropped in to our offices last week and asked us for help in publicising the new group. > A photocopy of a photograph taken in 1944. From inside the wreckage bullets were exploding in all directions, breaking windows in nearby properties. Sometime later, in the mid-afternoon, American officers arrived in a Jeep to take charge. American military personnel who were based at Malinslee Hall remove the pilot’s body. A mobile crane was sent for but not used until the following day when the fire had been distinguished. No explanation was given at the time as to the possible cause of the crash. In October 1977 a lady who lived on the Bull’s Head side of the road described how a ‘bullet’ which had exploded by the heat of the ensuing fire had penetrated her front door and ricocheted off the inside of her house until it lost its momentum - the bullet was half-inch diam- > Sheila Jones, Malcom Randall, Ron Munt and Les Tait, perform a laying of the wreath ceremony at 2nd Lt Jenson’s crash spot. 18 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk 18, 19 Letters.indd 1 31/03/2014 16:24 eter, the standard issue then carried by American aircraft. She kept the bullet as a souvenir. One of the History Group members, Clifford Bryce, recalls as a twelve year old boy returning home and finding some bullet cases and taking them home as souvenirs, as did many children that day. His mother wouldn’t allow him to keep them in the house and told him to bury them in the garden. Clifford suspects they are still there to this day. The History Group’s vicechairman, Ivor Jones was just eleven when the crash happened and he has tried for many years to erect a memorial to the brave pilot whose actions saved many lives. It is thought he managed to steer his stricken plane away from Lawley School and away from highly populated areas to the only patch of green he could see. Ivor’s attempts finally paid off and in November 2012 he finally succeeded. David Wright MP unveiled a simple plaque in memory of 2nd Lt Jenson and on October 18 2013 he also unveiled a bench on the same spot. The History Group intend raising money and donating it to Blind Service Veterans. They meet monthly at the Wrekin View, Lawley Bank. Alan’s on the team Alan Hart has written in after seeing the old photograph of Wellington Grammar football team. Have just seen the article of the under 13a team at the Grammar School and I was one of the team that is me third from the right. Mike and I were together from infant school then junior school then the Grammar. If you have contact with him ask him about his cold toast which I used to share, and what about the lunch time football ‘match’. All hell in the playground but it produced some good footballers. Is Ivan on this Hadley picture? I WAS pleased to read Ivan’s letter in the March 2014 issue of Wrekin News, confirming the name of Frank Holland, but I didn’t know his nickname. As he remembered so much about the fighter planes crashing in mid-air I was surprised he did not mention the one pilot ending up on the front lawn of a house in Haybridge Avenue. Despite my living near the Cross Keys in Hadley for eight years I did not know that particular spot by Mrs Bebb’s was called Parrot Lane, nor did I know Ocker Brook was a proper name, I thought it was just a local title. I am enclosing a copy of a photograph of Hadley schoolchildren from somewhere between 1937 and 1939 because I am fairly certain that Ivan is at the end of the back row on the right hand side. I am third from the left on the second row from the front. Whereas I can name the girls, there are a few boys I cannot name and I thought maybe Ivan can and there is a faint possibility that Frank could be on the photograph. I never had the original photograph but someone kindly lent me her copy a few years ago so that I could get in copied at the Camera Shop in Wellington. I have now Mrs June Bennison from Lawley Village writes in response to Ivan Fletcher’s letter. photocopied it to allow you to use it. On a different subject, the High School photograph in the Wrekin News was before my time there but it was no trouble for me to identify Miss Etches the maths teacher who was there until she retired and still lived in Wellington with her sister until her death in her nineties. She kept the same hairstyle throughout. Hadley Old Boys line-up DEREK (GASH) Gambie has been keeping us entertained with his stories of his early days in Hadley. Derek is now retired and living in the Dordogne district of France. He has written many local books and he recently sent me this photograph of the original Hadley Old Boys football team. The team went on to be one of the most successful amateur sides in the district and were one of the first to play in the Shropshire County League. The photograph was taken in 1959 and the players are: Back Row, left to right: Ken Robinson; Keith Wallace; Alan Hughes; Derek Fletcher; Derek ’Gash’ Gambie; Brian Jones; Kenny Cruxton; Front Row left to right: Tom Sharrock, manager; George Humphreys; Graham Doody; Derek Bytheway; Cliff Bennett; Derek Ball; Barry Williams (joint secretary). www.wrekinnews.co.uk / 19 18, 19 Letters.indd 2 31/03/2014 17:04 Derek deals with the school bully! T HERE was of course a school bully from an upper class and being well built for my age he had to prove he was better than me and I was subsequently a frequent victim. We had dozens of battles in the school yard and he won every one of them but never once did I submit to his taunts. This of course drove him mad and the battles went on for weeks until some sharp eyed teacher noticed that I always appeared to be bleeding and covered in bruises; thankfully he put a stop to it once and for all. I will not name him because equally tragically he also died very young. My stubbornness also got me a thrashing from another older boy. We had a set at one end of the yard and he steadily drove me right across to the other end knocking me down several times. I made two very big mistakes that day, never take on anyone older and bigger than yourself and if he Derek Gambie continues his story of life in Hadley as a boy. He told us last month about his bad experiences with school meals and continues this month about dealing with the school bully and a trip to London. knocks you down don’t keep getting up as I did. I never took any notice of this advice but that was the nature of people who come from Hadley – they don’t give up easily. Everyone from Hadley is a little bit special to me! It was August 1951 and I had just turned nine years old. Uncle Jim and Aunty Lal had been visiting earlier in the week and today, Sunday, they turned up again. Me and my two sisters were bundled into the Ford 8 with dad and mom joining Uncle Jim and aunty Lal in the Austin 10. We set off east along the old A5 road towards Cannock and I remember going across a road junction called Muckley Corner. The road from there was very uneven and dad explained that it was subsidence caused by mine workings. After a few more miles both cars stopped, a conference was held among the adults and we turned back and stopped at a roadside pub. Back home and no explanation to us kids. One week later dad and mom and us three kids caught a train to London and then a bus to the outskirts and into a ground floor flat. Hugs and kisses for the adults and a polite handshake for me. It was the home of my dad’s brother uncle Harry and his wife, who, much to my confusion was also called aunty Lal. Just type in Derek Gambie for full details and a few sample chapters > Derek Gambie At last we worked out what had happened. Dad had intended driving to London but was unsure of the road or the capability of the 16 year-old car to make it. The previous Sunday outing had been a bit of a trial run and the result was that we had better let the train take the strain. It had been a very exciting journey for me with my nose pressed to the carriage window all the way but now I was tired and put the bed early. In 1935 my parents had got married in Fairford, Gloucestershire and spent their honeymoon in the flat of Harry and Lal but it was two flats earlier as they were twice bombed out during the Blitz. Next morning was quite a culture shock for me as I was let outdoors into what appeared to be a large concrete yard about 50 yards square. I was hugely disappointed and assumed if the whole of London was like this I wasn’t coming again. I did manage to get beyond the yard but only with adults in tow and we did see some greenery in Hyde Park and the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Dad still had a lot of his family living in London so we got dragged all over the place and then had to sit quietly whilst the adults talked, drank and sang. But then a big decision was made that put me into a two day sulk. Dad was going to see the Festival of Britain but he declared that I was too young to appreciate it so could not go. I stormed outside and walked around the yard wall kicking every brick at ground level. I think my dad was surprised at the level of my disappointment so two days later he declared that we would all go to London Zoo for the day. This was more like it as I loved animals but my range had never got past cats, dogs, cows and horses, so it was a revelation to see ostriches and elephants. To get there we had to cross the centre of London and part of the trip was done on a double decker open top tram. I spent most of the time running up and down the stairs but the driver let me touch some of the controls and the conductor lifted me up to ding the bell. From the top deck I saw more traffic in ten minutes than I would see down Hadley High Street in a week. Little did I know that fifteen years later I would be charging through those same streets driving a Land Rover but by then the trams had been consigned to the history books. At the zoo I came across the cage that absolutely fascinated me and just stared and stared at the animals within. I never looked round and must have been there for over half an hour when exasperated dad turned up puffing and panting with my sisters Jean and Beryl in tow. He was very angry and gave me a lecture on behaviour and for goodness sake ‘don’t get lost again’. ‘But dad, I’m not lost; it’s you that has been lost. I have been here all the time looking into the eye of a Tiger. For once I got a smile and an ice cream instead of a clout – so perhaps London wasn’t so bad after all. Next month it is the fruit season and a family trip to a favourite aunt to pick her damsons. 20 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk 20 Letters.indd 1 31/03/2014 13:08 Stars and Castles on the rail track H OW VERY interesting – a railway article by my namesake Dave, Reference GWR ‘Star’ class 4056 Princess Margaret. I enclose a photograph of her sister Princess Alexander (4053) exiting King Street bridge on an afternoon up express captured for our pleasure by ace railway photographer Brian Morrison in July 1952. For many years, Wolverhampton (Stafford Road) hosted at least five ‘Stars’ even more ‘Castles’ and a quarter of ‘Kings’ and whilst Kings were off-limit via Wellington, the well-kept ‘Stars’ and ‘Castles’ were daily viewing for keen Wellington spotters. C.M.E., G. J. Churchward’s classic design was most definitely a trend setter. His four cylinder layout developed eventually into the fine ‘Castle’ class, and then, the ‘Kings’. In exchange trials with express locomotives on other main railways, the ‘Stars’ and ‘Castles’ proved John Talbot from Bournemouth writes in response to the ongoing saga over the Princess Margaret locomotive. to be significantly superior. Huge driving wheels and polished rods were unencumbered with outside valve linkages as in other designs. All the Walschaerts valve linkages were tucked away, cleverly inside the frames. Such a clean-aspect emphasised the stride of these machines in motion. Looking at 4053, in reflection, I hear it’s characteristic exhaust ‘bark’ of four cylinder power, the approach intensity, followed by a diminishing ‘Doppler’ sound-effect as the train accelerated to Hollinswood. During the heyday of fast express trains Bristol depot must have been a ‘Star’ spotter’s paradise as it had fifteen of them! Fortunately my recall of these impressive locos has not faded. No. 4018 ‘Knight of the Grand Cross (ex-SRD) rattling down from Haybridge junction into my sight emitting a piercing whistle scream to warn Wellington, ‘I’m Coming!’ Or 4004 ‘Morning Star’, every other summer morning heading ‘Bournemouth- Birkenhead’ consist of green Southern Railway Carriages. Remarkably, the original Star 4000 ‘North Star’, in our day, a convert to a ‘Castle’ class, was regularly passing Wellington, and there was ‘Knight Templar’, such a dynamic parade of engineering excellence for young eyes. Only one survives, 4003 ‘Lode Star’, all polished and stately in early twentieth cen- tury perfection is displayed at the National Railway Museum in York – a classic! In the argot of veteran and vintage automobile collectors, there Aston Martin’s, Bugatti’s and Bentley’s are reverentially referred to as ‘Passion-Assets’. And, clearly, that is equally appropriate for all that treasured hardware, big or small, at so many steam railway preservation centres with, notably, Severn Valley Railway virtually on Wellington’s doorstep, for those who seriously have got – passion! And, oh, yes, you did see ‘Stars’ way back then. And, oh yes, (a final thought) just like a six cylinder BMW engine, four cylinder GWR engines are in perfect balance. Some of you may remember “Camp coffee with Chicory” and really it was quite revolting it was in a bottle which resembled brown sauce, and it was made worse because there was no sugar to spare to help sweeten it all up a little. This started a trend of thoughts of around and at that time so “Picture this”. It was a very dark night, and Mum, my sister Sheila and myself were. as was almost every day at Grandma’s house and which was about three to four miles from our own home, anyway to carry on, there was no moon, or stars and we were walking home when suddenly a whole lot of searchlights started to swerve like huge long snakes across our sky from beyond and over the Manchester direction, I don’t recall sirens sounding after dark, but it was all very scary, just the darkness and yes! the quiet searching and swerving lights high above us in the darkness. The three of us must have resembled three young girls both walking and running a little along these roads which seemed to be endless, but eventually the the relative safety came into view as we neared our own home, and I can still feel the relief as Mum put the key in the door and we scurried inside similar to the saying “like rats up a drainpipe” but it was not much safer inside when I think of the bombs being dropped over Manchester, which was not too ar away from our little villages. Until my Dad was ‘called‘up’ into the army I remember so many nights during the weeks after his working day ended in his Manchester office he had to stay on all night to do some “fire watching” and I believe that entailed people staying there to help put out any fires or help with injured people thus caused through nightly bombing raids from German aircraft, and as kids at around nine and six years of age all of this was very scary. But the main event that I personally found very scary was our regular practices from our school to local village homes who had cellars in the event of bombing raids during the daytime, and the thought of wearing my gasmask was positively horrifying. These masks were made of black rubber which was very hot and smelly, It was difficult to breathe when wearing a gas mask and the sight of a school full of kids wearing these things was to say the least “mind boggling”. I am showing you a photograph of both the Gasmask and one of our little local school. Now it all seems to be so surreal, on these wartime nights when all was complete and utter darkness, no lights whatsoever anywhere, even the the little lights showing the centre of the roads were removed. But you know, I never recall ever being afraid of getting attacked and molested people had other fears and worries then, today------well-------I don’t go out after dark by myself now. I think it’s called “a sign of the times.” We had rather a large railway station in our village and I would go there and to watch and wait for the “hospital trains” these were normal train carriages but had been converted into more like medial wards and they were full of troops who had been wounded and were being transported to various hospitals. All of these things and happenings were part of mine and other kids lives at this time and I don’t think you could describe the feeling of relief and getting your life back again once “Peace was declared”. I will finish this episode now and hope that I have given some of you just some little things to remember in your quieter times. June Bennison from Lawley Village writes in response to Derek Gambie’s letter about the tragic drowning in Trench Pool. With reference to Derek’s letter, he will be around ten years younger than me and I think the person he referred to drowning in the Trench Pool all those years ago would have been around my age. I might be wrong but I think his name was Frank Holland. I think he had an older sister and lived somewhere in the area to the left of Miss Jennings’ shop and Austin’s Newsagents. I understood that the tragedy was through swimming too soon after eating, causing him to get into difficulties with cramp. I’m sure there will be someone around who will remember better than me what must have been nearly 70 years ago. During the long summer holidays I used to walk to Trench Pool with my friend from the Cross Keys area of Hadley on sunny days taking my pencil and note book with me to sketch things of interest. I remember the old wooden shed-like building at one corner which was used for diving and the bulrushes being out of reach for collecting. I’ve no idea what it is like now. Joan and I were also invited by some sea cadets from Donnington to go out in the boats with them and they told us there was a whirlpool on the opposite side which had to be avoided. It dates back to 1957 and is of a group of men enjoying a day out. Les is not sure about what the day represented but they were probably from the Bell public house in Donnington. He thinks the photograph was taken on a half-way stop on the way to the Swallow Falls in Wales. The stop was clearly a local hostelry because most of them have drink in their hands. The older ones are sporting flat caps and everyone is wearing either a suit or a sports jacket. The older ones have opted to wear ties and the younger ones are sporting the new trend of wearing the open neck shirts outside their jackets. It is a wonderful moment in time. Les is able to name a few of the men. Back row from left: A Biddulph (third), George Fletcher (fourth), Alan Edwards (fifth), Reg Greenfield (sixth), Norman Pickering (seventh) and Jim Miner (eighth). The middle row from left is: George Carline (second), Harry Savage (fifth), George Pickering (sixth). Les can only remember Cliff Meredith (fifth) and Harry Pickering (sixth) on the front row. The North Shropshire Hunt point-to-point will take place on Easter Monday (21st April) and the South Shropshire Hunt point-to-point on May bank holiday Monday (5th May). Since the outset, Eyton has been a hub for emerging talent with many young jockeys securing their first win at Eyton. Tell us a little bit about yourself Lester: LF: I’m 16 and currently taking my GCSEs at Thomas Adams Wem. We’ve recently moved from Shrewsbury closer to the Shropshire/ Wales border but I’ve grown up in the area and have always lived in Shropshire. I’ve been riding my entire life and have hunted with my family which I’ve always enjoyed. When I was younger I did Pony Club and then began to get involved in point-topointing. This is my first riding season and my first time racing at Eyton. How does it feel to be racing at Eyton this year? LF: It’s great to be competing in the race this year after having watched Eyton from Wrekin News has secured an interview with young jockey Lester Futter who at only 16 will be racing for the first time at Eyton in both the April and May race meetings this year. the side-lines for so long. My Dad’s an assistant starter at Eyton so I have been able to go down to the start for as long as I can remember. He has been field master for the Wynstay and North Shropshire hounds for over 10 years and I have hunted around Eyton so we have a big family involvement here. When did you first start riding? LF: I’m not sure when I first started riding; I’ve been doing it as far back as I remember. I’ve always wanted to ride and loved hunting and following hounds. I got my first pony when I was about three I had to learn to ride pretty quickly as Mum never had a horse suitable to do lead rein from but I had a very good pony called Ziggy who could jump and keep up with the big horses and though I’ve moved on from ponies now I still love to ride Boysie my 15hh who I won the puissance jumping 1metre 50 last year. He is a serious pony whom I hope we will never part with as Mum loves him too. How do your parents support you with your riding? LF: We live on a stud farm where my parents run one of the biggest national hunt stud farms in the country. So there’s plenty of opportunity to be working around horses, we have lots of young horses to break and bring on I really enjoy educating the youngsters and seeing them going on to race. We’re a riding family; my Mum, Dad and brother all ride, although I’m the first to enter a race competitively. I’ve also always hunted with my family with the North Shropshire Wynnstay and this last year the United. We have had some amazing days following hounds jumping huge hedges, gates, wire and anything that comes in front of us. You’re doing your GCSEs at the moment. How hard is it to balance school and training? LF: In winter it’s quite hard. I don’t get back from school until 6 o’clock and it’s too dark to ride by then. During the winter months the only times I can ride are at the weekend and during half term where I try to hunt as much as I can. Instead I go running and swimming during the week in order to keep fit. It’s easier in summer when it’s lighter as I can ride in in the evenings. There’s also more time with the longer holidays. What first made you interested in point-to-point racing as opposed to racing on the flat and other forms of competition? LF: At 5’10’’ flat racing was never an option and jump racing is where my heart lies. Point-to-pointing has always appealed to me partly because it’s something that I’ve always been interested in and my family’s been involved with. What are your plans for the future? LF: After I finish my GC SEs I’ll hopefully get an apprenticeship which will get me started in working on the stud farm, then I’ll be involved in my family’s business. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep up with riding alongside this and then who knows; maybe I’ll be back at Eyton next year! Now there’s a local solution! Bewildered by adverts and press stories? Bothered by ‘robot’ calls? If you’ve had a loan, credit card, mortgage or finance deal, it’s possible you were misssold Payment Protection Insurance. Some people had PPI added, but weren’t told! Some people say: “It’s easy to do it yourself. Just download the forms on the Internet, fill them in and get the money you’re owed!” What if the bank says: “The computer says no”? Is that right? You need an expert. Someone who can ask the right people the right questions. Someone who can ensure you get your hardearned money back. Meet Steve Bleasby of Acorn Claim Assist. Steve says: “I established Acorn Claim Assist to offer readers an easy, effective local way to claim compensation for misssold PPIs. Prior to early retirement I worked in senior management for a top High Street bank for over 30 years. I’m familiar with how PPIs were sold and miss-sold. I’ve been dealing with PPI claims for over 10 years.” He points out: “Our average settlement figure on agreed claims is a shade over £4,500. And do remember, it’s not the bank’s money! It’s your money which we return to you!” He added: “We’re unique! From start to finish I personally deal with your claim. This includes a free initial consultation in your home, to establish if you have a valid claim.” Some firms offering this service charge between 20 to 40%, Acorn Claim Assist charges an inclusive 12.5%. Why the difference? Steve says: “We’re a family business. We don’t need a large telesales team or processing centre. It’s why we offer our service at 12.5%. As I work no win, no fee, there are no nasty shocks should you turn out not to be owed anything. “Someone told me we’re a PPI claims company with a conscience. Whilst that’s flattering, all I know is, I do my best to ensure you get your money back!” But Steve adds a note of caution: “If a bank or credit card company phones you or writes to you out of the blue, don’t ignore them. Because they set an arbitrary date and will consider your claim ended! If you get a call or letter contact us as quickly as possible. Whatever you do, don’t ignore them. “Also, if we’re already acting on your behalf and you get a letter or a call from your bank ‘requesting details’ politely refer them to us as your representatives, as we have all the details they need.” £440 99% RE YOU OWED RE YOU OWED £1,000’s...? £1,000’s...? Nestled in its unique position in the shade of the Ercall, the Buckatree Hall Hotel has always been the place to be seen. It overlooks the north Shropshire plains from its northern elevation. It oozes class and has a history to match. For instance did you know it got its name because a stag was once seen between the fork in a tree in the grounds? And did you know it was rebuilt in the 1920’s by that well-known Wellington figure, Sir John Bayley? And did you know that the Lander family bought the house off him in the 1930’s and lived there before moving to Sunnycroft? E NTHRALLING history, but many Wellington people will have fond memories of using the Buckatree for special occasions and events over the years. I celebrated my son’s 21st birthday with an intimate family gathering twenty years ago. In recent history however the Buckatree has moved from private ownership into a hotel chain; but that is all in the past and present manager, Wayne Jenson tells me that the much-loved hotel is now back in private ownership. “Yes,” he said. “We have now returned to private ownership and the family have invested significantly, both in terms of money and time towards refurbishing the hotel, guest rooms and public areas. We’re very keen to build up a local clientele and welcome customers old and new.” My visit was to sample a meal and tell our readers what I think. Certainly pulling up outside the hotel is impressive and the welcome inside matches that impression. A pre-meal drink in the Lander Suite gets you in the mood and the menu is brought to the table for you Accompanied by his wife Lynne, Editor Dave Gregory recently dined out at the Buckatree Hall Hotel, The Wrekin. to peruse. Fifteen minutes later and you are seated in the Lakeside Restaurant which has views over the ornamental lake, built when the building was turned into a hotel many years ago. The menu offers five choices of starter. I went for the Pate in a Pot garnished with a Red Onion Marmalade and served with Warm Olive Bread. My wife Lynne chose the Smoked Salmon and Dill Cheesecake sat upon a Spiced Cous Cous base with Spaghetti Vegetables. As you will see from the photograph, the food was presented in a very attractive manner and was equally good on the taste. Main course was a steak cooked to Lynne’s liking served with grilled tomato, mushrooms, beer battered onion rings and chunky chips – it looked and tasted delicious. My Pork Chop marinated with herb, mustard and honey rub and served with green cabbage and bacon with red wine reduction was equally delicious and the accompanying vegetables were beautifully fresh and crisp. It’s always difficult to find room for a dessert but in the interests of our readers it just had to be done. Once again the photographs tell a tale. Lynne’s Brandy Basket filled with fresh fruit salad or a section of dairy ice creams was as good on the eye as it was on the taste and my cheese and biscuits were of a very high standard. The elegant Lakeside Restaurant was half full on the Thursday night we visited but bar menus are available in the Lander Suite. Prices were very accommodating for hotel dining. Our three-course meal was priced at £22.50 with a £2.50 supplement for the steak but the meal cost was broken down into individual prices to allow the diner to select individual courses. As I said, it is nearly twenty years since I dined at the Buckatree in the Lakeside Restaurant, but I was pleasantly pleased by the experience. The price was sensible to encourage regular diners and I feel good that the Buckatree is once again in safe hands and offering a great dining experience alongside its successful special events schedule. Lifelong Telford Tigers fan Julie Jones invited the club’s players to the launch of her new hairdressing salon in Priorslee. Skipper Scott McKenzie and Dan Scott were on hand to celebrate the opening of Elements Hair & Beauty on Gatcombe Way. Mrs Jones, who has followed the club since its glory days in the 1980s, took over the salon from previous owners in September. And she is looking forward to taking her business into the heart of the community. “I had the chance to take over the salon and after looking at all the figures, I jumped at it,” Mrs Jones said. “I returned to hairdressing after a few years out and I absolutely love it. Every morning I look forward to coming into the salon and I want our customers to share in that. “It can be very hard work, but it is also very rewarding.” Julie’s salon employs a junior stylist, as well as five freelance stylists, with plans to expand into beauty treatments. She is also hoping to introduce a loyalty scheme for regular customers. Her decision to involve Telford Tigers in the launch stems from her support of the club over 25 years ago. She said: “We followed the Tigers home and away for years, and have recently started to attend games again. However, because the tooth’s recovery process is slow, if the acid attack happens frequently, the tooth does not have a chance to repair. Over time when combined with vigorous tooth brushing, grinding the teeth or eating and drinking acidic food and drinks this can cause significant wear, resulting in the enamel getting thin. This can lead to a change in the shape, size and appearance of teeth, which may also mean they become sensitive and chip easily. What causes erosion? Acidic foods and drinks such as fizzy drinks, fruit and fruit juices, particularly citrus ones including lemon and orange, contain natural acids which can be harmful to your teeth, especially if you have a lot of Wycherleys Advertorial.indd 1 them often. Juice diets can be detrimental to teeth as the juice from vegetables and especially from fruits, which tend to have a higher acid content, can damage the enamel of your teeth in exactly the same way that a fizzy drink would. Fructose is a natural sugar, but to the body it’s still a sugar, so too much of it will cause cavities as the bacteria in the mouth feed on it. People suffering from hiatus hernia or oesophageal problems, or who drink too much alcohol, may also find they suffer from dental erosion due to vomiting or gastric reflux. Very often gastric reflux goes undiagnosed and untreated causing severe erosion to the teeth. 49 HIGH STREET, NEWPORT, TF10 7AT www.wycherleysdentalpractice.co.uk After Chew sugar-free gum after eating, this will help produce more saliva to help cancel out the acids which form in your mouth after eating. Wait for at least one hour after eating or drinking anything acidic before brushing your teeth, this gives your teeth time to build up their mineral content again. We recommend you use fluoride toothpaste twice a day. Children up to three years old should use a smear of children’s toothpaste Three-year-olds to adults should use adult toothpaste that contains fluoride. In severe cases fluoride supplements such as rinses and gels may be used once a day. How to minimise erosion How do we treat dental erosion? Their last game in the league was away at Old Silhillians and would decide the League winners, with both teams going into this game with 100% records. Old Silhillians had a better goal difference, so Telford needed a win to secure the league against tough opposition who were bigger and older. Old Silhillians started quickly and went 2-0 up. However Telford came back strongly to level the score at half-time. Telford began the second half as they finished the first scoring two more cracking goals to put Telford 4-2 up. Old Silhillians pulled a goal back to make the score 4-3, but two further brilliant goals sealed a 6-3 victory for Telford. This was an excellent game between two strong, good teams. Telford scored some outstanding goals backed up by a great team effort, with everyone working hard for each other defensively as well as going forward. Thanks to all the parents for their support, to the coaches Dave Tracey and Vince Richardson, who guided the team to success, and to Ben Keeble for umpiring all games). Severn Trent Water reports reservoirs and other water sources are pretty much full and looking good for the summer. But it’s asking people not to be complacent and think about being ‘water wise’ in whatever we do, as we never know what’s next with the weather. Doug Clarke, water efficiency manager for Severn Trent explains: “This weekend the weather was beautiful. Many of us took the opportunity to get into the garden and start tidying up after the winter. Now’s the time to think about getting a water butt to save rain water, ready to use in the summer. “It may have been the wettest winter on record and our reservoirs may be full, but if we’re going to have a hot dry summer, we need to think long-term about our water usage. We’re confident that our water resources are in the best possible position at the moment, and we don’t currently envisage any restrictions at all this summer. However, if it’s going to be super hot, then we need to get into good habits now. Weather patterns are obviously changing from what we’re used to, so we never know what’s around the corner. “There are a few easy things that you can do, in- Telford Timber Supplies TIMBER MERCHANTS & DIY TRADE & PUBLIC WELCOME CALL: 01952 242916 E: telfordtimber@hotmail.com · Visit: telfordtimber.co.uk Unit 1, Hadley Business Park, TELFORD M Fallows Tree Care cluding getting a water butt. We’ve got a whole host of information on our website at www.stwater.co.uk/savewater, and now there is a series of short videos too. One of those videos features our team of little helpers showing us why they think a water butt is the best idea at this time of year. “When we do get a shower or two, now is the perfect time to collect rainwater in a water butt. That way you can keep the garden watered all summer without using water from the tap.” Severn Trent Water reports that even though reservoir levels and other water sources are pretty much full, it’s keen to encourage customers to get into good habits. “It may seen crazy to be talking about saving water, especially after what felt like never ending rain, all winter and with all the flooding, but the more steps we can all take now - getting into good habits - then the better placed our water supplies will be if we do have a hot dry summer.” said Doug. Paul Jones (of Manfred Man fame), Dave Kelly, Rob Townsend, Gary Fletcher and Tom McGuinness front of one of the UK’s most respected bands. Over 20 albums and 35 years have passed since 1979, when Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness expected a short shelf life for their idea of forming a pub band to ‘play the blues for beer money’. But passion is a currency everyone covets, and The Blues Band had passion by the bucketful; and fans know a good thing when they hear it. The public’s eager response to what The Blues Band thought was a hobby project took them by surprise, providing a career for life beyond the boundaries of pop, in the musical tradition they love. Pubs and beer money are a thing of the past. The Blues Band continue to be celebrated across the media and have played to wildly appreciative audiences around the globe in venues ranging from clubs through to civic halls and theatres. HE Sun’s motoring editor wasn’t looking forward to attending a speed awareness course after being caught speeding. But the journalist, who drives 120,000 annually, praised the course he attended in Ledbury, run by Shropshire’s TTC Group. In an article in the Sun, Ken said he’d learned more than he thought he would after agreeing to attend the course to keep a clean licence. Young drivers can’t afford to drive The costs of car ownership can place a burden on young drivers. In fact 35% of non-drivers between 17 and 25 think it’s too costly to learn to drive or own a car. 32% of youngsters responding to the Gocompare.com survey feel less using public transport than it would cost to run a car, but 22% admit to feeling trapped at home by not being able to get around more. The survey showed they spend about £1,831.40 annually keeping their car on the road, with 80% spending up to 30% of their income running a car. 39% spend over £2,000 a year. Gocompare.com’s chief Lee Griffin said: “Learning to drive and owning your own car used to be a rite of passage for young adults. Now it seems many find it too costly. Car insurance is one of the biggest expenses for inexperienced drivers but there are ways to try to reduce the cost as you build up a safe driver record and no claims discount.” Gocompare.com advises young drivers to shop around for insurance, to start small (like under 1,000cc) to boost the excess, look at black box policies, add a named driver and consider no frills policies. > Ken Gibson with a Porsche Panamera. “I think I drive fairly sensibly but it is 40 years since I sat my driving test and I learned things that I didn’t know,” confessed Ken, who was caught doing 35mph in a 30mph limit in Rosson-Wye. “I was not looking forward to more than four hours sitting in a classroom being reminded I was a speeder. I don’t think many there were thinking of it being a valuable safety initiative experience,” he told Sun readers. But he said the mood changed into a group of people happy to participate and learning something. Attendees were split into groups, introduced themselves to each other, and completed a speed awareness quiz. The questions highlighted “just how grey” some of their knowledge was on speed issues, said Ken, who praised the TTC Group tutors for being keen to engage everyone in the discussion. They spoke about reasons for speeding and consequences like losing a job or someone dying. “It is easy to say stop speeding but not quite as easy to achieve this in the hustle and bustle of life. The official answer is COAST, the letters standing for Concentration, Observation, Anticipation, Space and Time. “After seeing some slides this made sense,” said Ken, who tests fast cars in exotic locations, worldwide. “You also learn about having more peripheral awareness about the road ahead instead of seeing no further than the first vehicle in front of you.” Selfie? Selfie-ish, more like! Confused.com research shows 1 in 14 drivers (7%) admit to having taken photographs while driving. 4% use Snapchat to send photos to friends while at the wheel. The site also discovered in a recent 30-day period, 287 tweets were tagged with #drivingselfie and #drivingselfies. 36% of drivers admit to using their mobile when driving, mainly to make or answer calls (75%) and send or check texts (43%). Yet, despite so many flouting the law, only 8% say they’ve been caught by police using their phone. Of those who were caught, 57% admit to continuing to use their phone. 42 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk 42 Auto Buyer.indd 1 31/03/2014 11:45 Call Lee today for a FREE quote on: 01952 507278 or 07582 049733 Problem with the body of your car? The governments of Belarus and Ukraine established that all affected children should leave the contaminated regions for at least “ is urgently needed Shropshire Link 56,000 children have received ‘a chance of a lifetime’ through the charity’s successful operations and the generosity of the British host families who have helped to form many links I am so proud I hosted these children; they changed our life and became very much a part of our family during their stay. Chernobyl caused numerous complex problems in affected communities. Despair and phobias have induced alcoholism. People are living in fear of their health and that of their children and can go on to develop psychological condi- tions as a result. Daily, families are struggling to cope in very difficult economic situations and tough climate with long, cold winters. This is why they are so grateful for such a unique opportunity given to their children to go abroad for short stays to improve their health, learn about other communities and most important of all – to have fun. Just read these two quotes, one from a host family and one from the parent of a child: The Host: I am so PROUD I hosted these children; they changed our life and became very much a part of our family during their stay. It was a very rewarding experience. The Parent: My daughter always looked so pale and tired. She was a very shy and timid child but after the visit she has changed a lot. Liam Watson’s side have shown a resilient streak which has seen them beat off all challengers since a reverse at the hands of Barrow back in January. The possibility of a first league title coming to Telford for over half a century is looming large. If Watson and his men can replicate the form of the last two months over the next four weeks they will surely take that all important top spot. W hilst the performance against Histon was not convincing it did ensure a sixth league win on the trot. And the Bucks sought a seventh as Oxford City visited the Bucks Head. The home side were quick into their stride and soon had the points sewn up. A ruthless first forty-five minutes saw four goals find their way into the visitors net. The rout began after twelve minutes as Shaun Whalley’s clinical finish found the corner of the net. The Luton Town-loanee was at the centre of things for the second as he put in Farrell who laid on a chance for Andy Owens to finish from close in. Whalley bagged his second five minutes before half-time, once again finding the corner of the net with a fine finish. Telford were to add a fourth goal in first half added time when Farrell fired home a spot kick after the impressive Whalley was pulled down by city keeper Matthew Bulman. The second period saw a more cautious approach, Telford seeing the game out comfortably. Bucks boss Watson was a happier man than he had been post Histon describing the Oxford demolition as “the best performance we’ve given at home this season.” So it was on to Leamington in the hope that the winning streak could be extended to eight in a row. But Telford knew it would not be easy as the Warwickshire Lez Dean brings you the latest news from the New Bucks Head. side had won at the Bucks Head back in December. It was United who took the lead after quarter of an hour when Farrell added another goal to his season’s tally as he tucked the ball home from the penalty spot. But the home side fought back when Danny Newton volleyed home before the half hour. Owens was then the Telford hero when he bundled the ball home soon after. Leamington however came back again in first half injury time with a penalty awarded after Owens was adjudged to have handled, Nathan Hicks converting. Telford were unable to reproduce the dominance they displayed the previous week against Oxford and will have considered a point a fair return for their efforts. But dropping points at this time of the season can come at a cost as North Ferriby regained top spot following their win over Stalybridge. As the campaign reaches it’s climax the Bucks find themselves in the tightest of battles. The champions of the division look like they will be drawn from one of three teams, Telford, North Ferriby or Altrincham. The Bucks have battled hard to get into this position and will hopefully triumph. No matter what happens in the last half dozen games or so, one thing is for sure, it is going to be a thrill a minute and the drama looks likely to last to the very last kick, of the very last game. > Adam Farrell celebrates scoring from the spot at Leamington. Tigers coach Tom Watkins (pictured) was, understandably, unhappy with his side’s performance - but urged them to remember that sense of disappointment. He said: “It is always a horrible feeling when you go out of the play-offs, whether it is as a player or as a coach. “I told the guys after the game that they must hold onto that feeling and realise what it is they dislike about it. “I just don’t think we got into the game, especially on Sunday night in Guildford. But no excuses. We came up against a very good team and they outperformed us across the two matches.” Commenting on Saturday’s home-leg performance Watkins said: “Saturday night’s game was play-off hockey at its finest. It was intense, quick and with not many whistles.
