The Power of Transformation
By Jan Deason, Head of School
Some would say that much of a child’s
educational experience at a Montessori school
is invisible to parents. The language of the
curriculum itself is mysterious: golden beads,
brown stair, stamp game, occupations.
Parents don’t see test scores, report cards,
spelling tests. The student does not stagger
home with a backpack bulging with worksheets
and homework assignments.
And yet, it is the very nature of this intangibility
that leads to the most remarkable changes in
your child. The curriculum, the materials, the
philosophy all come together to support the
person that your child was meant to be.
You can’t plot a child’s emotional, social and
intellectual growth on a report card. Instead
you see it in the beautiful moments that
happen every day at school and at home.
When the lower elementary child creates her
own math problems at home, she demonstrates
curiosity and problem-solving.
curiosity
You can’t plot a child’s
emotional, social and
intellectual growth on a
report card. Instead you
see it in the beautiful
moments that happen
every day at school and at
home.
When upper elementary children decide to
host a bake sale to raise money for Ebola
research, after studying about the virus, they
exhibit confidence in their own ability to
change the world.
The ability to self-advocate and communicate
effectively is revealed every time a primary child
gives an ‘I-message’ to a peer.
Third-years model collaboration when doing a
research with first-years.
When AP students manage a business, they
blend their creativity and innovation with
practical life-skills like balancing a budget and
customer service.
The amazing independence and generosity that
toddlers already possess come to life during
their community meal.
I think of the Annual Fund in much the
same way. The Annual Fund has the power
to transform the school and your child’s
educational experience in a behind-the-scenes
kind of way.
When a parent makes a donation to the
Annual Fund, he doesn’t see an invoice from a
Montessori continuing education conference
stamped “Paid for by John Smith” or a note
saying, “This month’s tuition assistance brought
to you by the Jones family.” The basketball
uniforms don’t have “sponsored by the Annual
Fund” emblazoned across the back. The school
bus doesn’t say Arbor Montessori School,
powered by the Annual Fund.
Instead, your child experiences a classroom
atmosphere of discovery, questioning and
observation because his teacher is bursting with
energy and ideas after attending a continuing
education course.
Tuition assistance works to keep your child’s
classroom community intact by helping her
classmate’s family during times of financial
hardship.
Trips to Medicine Bow are made easier because
of the Arbor buses; playtime is all that more fun
because of the activity field and track; school
spirit rises with a well-equipped sports program.
As 2014 draws to a close, on behalf of the staff
and teachers at Arbor, I want to thank you for
your contribution and for being part of the
invisible force that makes Arbor a strong, vibrant
and visibly happy community.
problem solving
The Annual Fund has the
power to transform the
school and your child’s
educational experience in a
behind-the-scenes kind of way.

exploration
A Montessori school is
different from other schools.
It’s not just that your child
will learn all that she would
in a traditional school plus
a whole lot more. It’s how
she will learn and how she
will feel about learning
for the rest of her life
that makes a Montessori
education remarkable and
unique.
2001

meaningful work
Montessori education is based
on the idea that children want
to learn; it’s a natural instinct.
Children receive an intrinsic
reward from learning.

NY. Allen works at Manning & Napier, an

prevented me from visiting Arbor in person,
I … always look forward to hearing about the
good work that Arbor is doing.”
Cole Sullivan is an American Voices national

Awards for journalism.
discovery
The Montessori Method
of teaching has a way of
feeding the students’ inner
flame which drives the need
for knowledge inside the
child. It works through the
students’ natural desire to
learn, as opposed to pushing
them to learn, which may
extinguish that flame.
Twice As Nice
Arbor alumni who have recently had twins
include:
Jeremy Deason
Amanda Adams (formerly Beyersmith)
Lauren Trentadue Monacell
Allen Coker
