BASKETBALL OUTLOOK
Coach Dean Nicholson begins his second year as Wildcat
coach with a strong nucleus of five returning lettermen.
Three
of these were starters on last year's Evergreen Conference and
District I NAIA championship team which had a 9-1 conference
record and a 20-6 season record.
With Mel Cox, all-conference and all-district center, back
to lead the Wildcat scoring attack, Central could again be strong
contenders in the Pacific Northwest.
Cox was the leading EvCo
scorer last season, averaging 22.2 points per game.
The 6-4
junior also led the team in rebounds and field goal shooting,
hitting 58.2 per cent of his shots.
Coach Nicholson is looking for Cox to lead the team again
this year along with guard Eddie Smith, a second-team all-conference selection and the third leading scorer on the team with a
12.8 average.
Smith had a knee operation this past summer but
seems to be recovering fully.
Dave Wenzler is the other return-
ing starter, and he is the tallest member of the team at 6 1 6 11 •
He will be in a forward position again this year.
Two other lettermen upon whom Coach Nicholson will be relying

Dan moves to Central from Skagit Valley College and is one of three transfers to whom
Coach Nicholson will look for help this yearo
Bass, an all-Conference choice at Issaquah
High School, is probably the fastest and most
agile player on the teamo He should add a
lot to the Wildcat offense this yearo Dan is
a physical education majoro
Jim adds depth to the backcourt and will push
for a starting positiono Belmondo was selected Most Inspirational in basketball while playing for Renton High School in 1964. He has
good speed, makes a good floor general, and is
majoring in physical education.
Dick is a transfer student from Columbia Basin
College where he played regularly on the state
champion junior college team and also won the
Inspirational Award in 19640 Brown adds experience and depth to the team and is a player
who shows a lot of hustle and determination o
Dick is a business administration major, and
he and his wife Susan have a one-year-old son,
Russel o
A local cager who can jump a "mile," Bruce is
up from the freshmen team which he led in scoring and rebounding last year o Colwell has good
speed to go with his jumping ability and will
make it tough for the veteran frowarda this season. Bruce is a majoring in pre-law while attending Central.
Although Karl hasn ' t played since 1963 at
Pacific Lutheran University he has much to
offer the Wildcats. Cordes played his high
school ball at Puyallup under Nicholson, and
should feel right at home at Centralo He is
a big man who knows his way around under the
boardso He should be one of the top rebounders
for the team o Karl is a physical education
major.

Last season Mel was selected to the allDistrict and the all-Conference teams, leading the conference with a 22 a2 scoring average and pacing the team in rebounds with 1680
Cox is big and strong and has shown scoring
ability even with two and three men guarding
him. Cox also led the team in field goal
accuracy, hitting 58a2 per cent of his shots.
Mel, a physical education major, is a potential
small-college All-American.
Ed, a transfer student from Highline College
will be battling for the forward spot vacated
by graduation last year. Erikson averaged 16
points a game while leading Highline to third
place in the state junior college conference
and has good rebounding ability (12 takedowns
per game). He always shows a lot of hustle
and desire. History is Ed's major 0
Chuck, the last of the transfer students, came
to Central from Grays Harbor by way of the
University of Idaho. Hepworth was selected as
the Outstanding Player and also won the Captain 1 s Award at Grays Harboro He is a big boy»
has great jumping ability, moves well and was
one of the top scorers while in junior college.
Hepworth will be used at either a forward or a
center spot. Chuck is majoring in physical
education and is married .
Tom, one of the five returning lettermen, gained
valuable game experience» playing in 24 games.
Hutsell showed a great amount of defensive skill
and scored 4.2 points per gameo Hutsell will
add versatility to the Wildcat front line as
he has good speed and jumping ability o Tom is
an elementary education major .
Ray, another of the lettermen back from last
year's squad, is probably one of the best defensive players in the leaguea Jones lettered
as a freshmen last year due to his great speed
and will to play . He was a standout athlete in
high school, participating in basketballj football, and tracko Jones should be a starter in
the backcourt this year as he played in 25 games
lait season o Ray and his wife Elaine have an
infant daughter, Sherio Jones is majoring in
business education o

Dave is one of two freshmen on the varsity
squad and looks to be a very desirable addition. Kent has good maneuverability in
the front line and on the boards. With a
little experience behind him, he could become
a top flight player. Dave is a history
major .
Although Dave only played in six varsity
games last year, he did gain valuable experience as a freshman. Klovdahl has good speed,
likes to play, and matches his shooting ability with the best. Dave is a language arts
major.
Glenn, the other freshman on the team, has
shown a great amount of ability in pre-season
play. Smick is a graduate of Endicott High
School where he played football, basketball,
baseball, and track and was also captain of
the basketball team . Smick has good speed
and a quick pair of hands and should make a
good defensive player. Glenn is a physical
education major.
Eddie is a veteran lettermen and one of only
four seniors on this year's squad . Smith, a
transfer student from Grays Harbor College
last season, made a smooth transitition into
the type of ball the Wildcats play and was
selected as second team all-Conference . Smith
has great speed and an e xcellent outside shot,
and he is not afraid to drive if the opposition
gives him a chance . The pesky scrapper last
year scored a respectable 12 . 8 points per game.
He is a physical education major .
Nick is a hustling player up from last year ~ . s
freshmen team . Snider should prove to be a
good reserve for Nicholson to call onp as he
has good scoring ability with a deadly outside
shot. Nick is a pre-journalism major .

"Cece" had playing time in fourteen varsity

Stuurmans could be classed as one of the top
contenders for a starting forward spot. He
has good rebounding ability, good speed, and
durability. "Cece" is a physical education
major.
Dave is one of three starters back from last
year's squad and should find himself in a starting role. Wenzler averaged 8.2 points per game
during the 64-65 season. Wenzler was the secondleading rebounder on the team last year with
152 caroms, and he proved to be a fine defensive playero Wenzler could be in the running
for all-Conference honors this season. Dave
is pursuipg an education major at Central.

A SKETCH OF THE COACH
TOM ANDERSON
Starting his fourth year as varsity swim coach, Tom
Anderson has developed a swimming program that has gained
national recognition for the Wildcats.
He has taken them into contention nationally, placing
third in the NAIA National Championships last year and also
winning the Evergreen Conference championship with a 14-1
season record .
In 1963-64 the team was 10-2 in dual meets and finished
second in the conference and seventh in the Nationals.
A graduate of York, Pa., high school, Anderson received
his B.A. from Montana State University in 1961 after spending
three years in the Marine Corps.
He received his master's
degree from the University of Washington before launching his
coaching career at Central.
In addition to his coaching duties, Anderson runs the men ' s
intramural program and is a member of the physical education
staff.
He and his wife Freida have two sons, Jeff,
4 and Todi 2.
30
SWIMMING OUTLOOK
With eight lettermen returning from last year's team,
Coach Tom Anderson in his fourth season at Central is highly
optimistic about the current intercollegiate swimming season.
The Wildcats last year had a season record of 14-1--the only
loss inflicted by the University of Oregon.
The Wildcats ended the 1964-65 season as Evergreen Conference Champions and placed third in the NAIA Small-college National
Championships.
Coach Anderson will be looking for all-Americans Gerry
Malella and Jeff Tinius to lead the way this year along with lettermen Steve Barber, Ray Clark, Gene Liefke, Jack Ridley, Jim Thomas,
and Tom Thomas.
The latter is the only senior on the squad.
Malella, a two-year letterman, is the national champion in
both the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard individual medley.
Tinius is intent on recapturing the national championship he won
in the 500-yard free style in 1964 when he also finished third
in the 200- and 500-yard free style events.
Last year he placed
second in the 1650-yard free style.
Other returning lettermen who gained the national finals
lA~t
year were Jack Ridley (fifth in both the 50- and 200-yard
free styles and sixth in the 100-yard free style), and Jim Thomas
(fifth in the 1650 yard free
styl~).
31
Anderson also looks for a couple of freshmen--Mark
Morrill and Doug Jones--to strengthen the Wildcats in divinga
Morrill was the state champion last year at Stadium High School
in Tacomao
Other promising freshmen are:
Terry Hiller, Tacoma; Dick
Swanson, Everett; Greg Wilson, Troutdale, Oreo; Jim Copeland,
Tacoma; Tom Davis, Seattle; Jim Vodar, Seattle; Bob Straight,
Bellevue; and Ken Hall, Pullmano
The Wildcats also have one
transfer student on the team, Mike Carey, senior from Texas

A SKETCH OF THE COACH
Eric Beardsle y in his sixth season as coach at Central
Washington State College has proven that he knows what wrestling is all about o
His arrival at Central marked the debut of wrestling on
the campus, and in five seasons he has provided a thrilling and
successful programo
His charges took all the marbles last year--
the "mythical" state wrestling championshipo
During his first year Beardsley ' s grapplers posted a 5-5
marko
As a sophomore coach he was 7-5, and in 1962 the Wildcats
had a 9-3-2 record and placed third in the Pacific Coast wrestling tournamento
The Cats dipped to an 8-4 record in 1963-64 9
before rebounding to last year's 11-3 record and runnerup honors
in the combined NAIA District I & II championship meeto

degree from Springfield (Mass o) College.

all-Evergreen Conference football honors as a defensive halfback
and was a standout in track o
Following his graduation in 1950, Beardsley taught at Moses
Lake High School for seven yearso

ing program and in six seasons produced seven state champion

WRESTLING OUTLOOK
Eric Beardsley, Central Washington State College wrestling
coach, is convinced 1965-66 "could be one of the best years for
wrestling that Central has seen."
Last year the Cats won the

to Portland State College in a combined District I and II Championship meet.
Leading the list of returning grappling veterans are Dennis
Warren and Eric Olson.
Warren went to the nationals in the 145-
pound division and Olson was the District I and II Champion for
the 191-pound weight class.
Besides these outstanding returnees,
Beardsley also has juniors VerNon Merkley (167), Dallas DeLay
(177) and Ron Baze (137) along with senior Bob Davidson (191).

(130) returns.
Squad members back from last year to help strengthen the
team are senior Darren Sipe (177), juniors Bill Rackley (160)
and Jim Lettie (167), and sophomores Jim Herman (123)
9

ner (130) and David Barton (177).
