Where there is inju - Mount Saint Joseph High School
February, 2013
Dear Parents and Guardians,
When I spoke to the students last week about Mr. Fitzpatrick’s resignation, I told them that “when the going gets tough, Mount men
get going.” Just as Theodore James Ryken and Brother James Kelly would say, “March on,” I assure you we will march on, and we
will move ahead with all things positive happening at the Mount. Our school is filled with dedicated, mission-focused educators who
live out the Xaverian Charism each day, and we will continue to grow and improve.
Please note that the athletic center construction is on schedule. Mr. Dave Norton is moving ahead with the new Brother James M.
Kelly Honors Program curriculum for incoming 9th graders, and we will continue to provide an outstanding education in the faith for
all of our students. In previous times of difficulty, the giants within the Xaverian Brothers steered us to prayer. As we approach Lent,
I would ask you to reflect on one of my favorite prayers from Saint Francis of Assisi.
The Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
As we enter the holiest of the Church’s liturgical seasons, a season of alms-giving, service to those in need, and prayer, all of which
move us to a closer relationship with the Lord, I ask you to keep the Mount in your prayers.
Finally, dear parents, I am making myself available to answer any questions I am able to during this difficult time. Please do not
hesitate to contact me either by email or by phone. I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you email me, please leave a phone
number where you can be reached.
George E. Andrews, Jr.
President
Mr. Dave Norton, Principal, Director of Studies
First Semester Grades:
If you have a concern about your son’s performance
in a particular class, you should contact the teacher via
e-mail or set up an appointment to meet face-to-face with
the teacher and your son at a time that is mutually
convenient. Please be sure to do this if your son’s grade(s)
indicates that improvement is needed.
For those students not finding success, efforts must
be made to change their method of study. Please check
their grades on a regular basis through Edline. For those
students with poor grades, there should be regular contact
with teachers through e-mail. The Studies Office with the
Guidance Department will continue to monitor students’
progress. Students who fail a class for the year will be
required to attend summer school unless the class is not
offered in the MSJ summer school program.
Course Selections for the
2013-2014 School Year
During the months of February and March, students
will be meeting with me to discuss course selections for the
2013-2014 school year. Assemblies are scheduled during the
homeroom period as follows:
Tuesday, February 12 - Juniors
Thursday, February 21 - Sophomores
Wednesday, February 27 - Freshmen
During this time, course description booklets and
selection sheets will be distributed. All options will be
discussed during the assembly.
A separate letter to parents regarding course
selections will be mailed from the Studies Office. Parents
are encouraged to call the Studies Office if they have
additional questions. Appointments can be made with me if
the condition warrants.
Completed course selection sheets should be
returned to your son’s guidance counselor by the following
dates:
Juniors - Friday, March 1
Sophomores - Friday, March 8
Freshmen - Wednesday, March 13
Mr. Chuck Belzner, Director of Guidance
Please Note: The Junior/Sophomore Parents’ College
Night will be held on Thursday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m.
in the auditorium. This is an excellent opportunity to
obtain information regarding the college admissions
process. There will be a number of helpful resources
available.
Acceptances and Scholarships: Sometimes colleges
do not advise the Guidance Office of acceptances or
rejections. As soon as students are notified by the college,
they should inform Mrs. Mnkande. Seniors should also
advise of any scholarship monies they have been
awarded. PLEASE BRING A COPY OF ALL
ACCEPTANCE LETTERS AND SCHOLARSHIP
AWARD LETTERS TO MRS. MNKANDE. It is
essential students turn in all letters, as this information is
needed for the graduation awards assembly and the
commencement program.
Scholarship information can be accessed from the
MSJ website at www.msjnet.edu/guidance. Financial aid
materials for the academic year 2013 – 2014 for Maryland
residents may be viewed and downloaded on the Maryland
Higher Education Commission’s website
www.mhec.state.md.us. Information about federal student
aid, including the 2013 FAFSA forms can be found at
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Selective Service System: When your son turns
eighteen, he is required by law to register with the
Selective Service System. If he fails to register, he can be
denied important opportunities such as student loans,
government jobs and a driver’s license in most states. It’s
easy and can be done online, at www.sss.gov For more
details, see Mrs. Mnkande.

Graduation Tuxedos
Mr. Clay Bonham, Director of Mount Ministries
After a busy January, we wish to thank all those
who participated in the various events, including the
Martin Luther King Prayer Service, March for Life, and
freshman and junior retreats.
February brings the return of the sophomore
retreats on February 5, 11, 19 and 25. to the Holocaust
Museum. We will celebrate our Ash Wednesday prayer
service on Wednesday, February 13.
The Parents’ Corner
Mrs. Mary Wiedel, Director of Parent Relations
The Mount’s first semester has concluded. As the
saying goes, “Put this one in the book!” Now is an excellent
time to have what I call a “mini-academic home conference”
with your son. The purpose of this meeting is for your son to
verbally assess how well he is succeeding in the current
academic year. How were his grades for the second quarter
of this year? You should have received the grades via email
on Thursday, January 31. Is there a particular course this year
that he finds rather challenging? Has he faced any major
academic hurdles? How are his test grades and quiz grades?
What is his track record with regards to turning in homework,
papers and projects in a timely manner? What steps has he
taken to improve any low grades? Does he regularly check
Edline to see his grades and have you logged onto Edline to
follow your son’s progress? If your son has struggled with
any course this year, has he attended the weekly National
Honor Society (NHS) tutoring sessions after school on Mondays and Wednesdays? The student tutors will assist students
in different subjects. NHS members are required to serve in
this way! And finally, does your son honestly believe he has
performed to the best of his ability in each class?
Many of our students have made the honor roll each
quarter so far this year (all grades a B or higher), so your son
may be already doing very well in his studies. That being
said, it is still helpful to sit down together and discuss his
progress. Even if his grades are solid at this point, the third
quarter is often the most challenging one. Often there are
many new concepts introduced! It is important that your son
begins this quarter strong. Now reassess your son’s home
learning environment. Does he have a quiet room to study?
Is it free from distractions such as a cell phone, a TV, lots of
other media items such as a game system, a stereo, an Ipod?
Does he concentrate for long stretches or does he take lots of
breaks that cause him to get off task? If some changes need
to be made to his study area, then it behooves him to make the
changes before any grades slip and possibly lead to a failure.
Summer school is expensive and not fun!
Establish a game plan to finish the year. Write down
any ideas from your joint “home conference” so they can be
implemented in the second semester. Finally, celebrate the
academic successes that have occurred so far this year!
A representative from CY’S of Catonsville will be
taking measurements for senior graduation tuxedos on
Wednesday, February 6, and Thursday, February 7
from 9:00 a.m. - l:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Students
should check the bulletin board in Ryken Hall for their
appointment date and time. The cost of the tuxedo rental
is part of the senior fee. Students may rent black dress
shoes for an additional cost of $12.00. Checks for rental
shoes should be made payable to Cy’s of Catonsville.
Senior Class Parents
Parents are invited to help plan the Senior Class
Post-Prom Party. Be a part of this memorable and safe
event to be held following the senior prom on Saturday,
May 18.
For more information, contact Ms. Stearns,
410-644-3300, ext. 259, or kstearns@admin.msjnet.edu
or Ms. Bicknell, ext. 440 or
kbicknell@admin.msjnet.edu.
National Honor Society
National Honor Society applications for current
sophomores and juniors will be accepted from Friday,
February 1 through Tuesday, February 19. Applications will be submitted online. Interested students must
have a minimum 3.3 cumulative, weighted GPA to apply.
Questions? Please contact Mr. Breen, Mr. Kaufmann
or Ms. Slingluff.
Basket and Bag Bingo
A Basket and Bag Bingo featuring Longaberger
baskets and Vera Bradley bags will be held on Sunday,
March 3, at 2:00 p.m. in the Mount Saint Joseph
High School cafeteria. Doors open at 1:00 p.m. and an
early-bird game will be held at 1:45 p.m. The proceeds
from this bingo will benefit My Brother’s Keeper, a
community outreach center in Irvington. Tickets for the

February Meeting
Inclement Weather Policy
The next Fathers’ Club general meeting is scheduled
for Monday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, and
our guest speaker will be Mr. Julius Prezelski from the
Computer Science Department who will speak on financial
literacy. It’s never too late to join us if you have yet to come
see what we’re about. Our guest speakers are always superb,
and there are some terrific activities coming up (see below)
that we could use your help with.
Thank you to our “Grill Master” Jay Parson and our
guest speaker Mr. Chuck Belzner, chairman of the Guidance
Department, for thoughtfully sharing their time and talent with
us at our most recent meeting.
If school is going to be cancelled because of
weather conditions, this fact will be announced over the
radio stations. The best source is station WBAL (1090 on
the AM dial). Mount Saint Joseph will not be mentioned
by name. Whenever Baltimore County secondary schools
cancel school because of snow conditions, Mount Saint
Joseph will automatically be closed. If Baltimore County
opens one or two hours late because of weather, Mount
Saint Joseph will do likewise; however, if Baltimore
County opens more than
two hours late, Mount Saint
Joseph will open only two
hours late. If Baltimore County is closed or on vacation,
we will follow Howard County.
