We are in the second quarter of 2014. I believe lots have happened for the last three months and various destinations have been explored as well. As to continuously support the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 (VMY 2014), our Cover Story for this issue focuses on our own Pearl of The Orient. Penang (or Pulau Pinang in Malay) is a state located on the northwest coast of Malaysia and one of the most developed and economically important states in the country, as well as a thriving tourist destination. Penang offers a mixture of tourists’ attraction, from its stunning beaches, cuisine, shopping experiences as well as arts and cultural exhibits. If you browse the Calendar Events for VMY 2014, you’ll notice that three events will be held in Penang. They are the Penang World Music Festival in April 2014, Georgetown World Heritage City Celebration by UNESCO and Penang Durian Fair, both in June 2014. For further reading pleasure and information, please flip over to Page 3 – Page 10. Destinations of the Month for this issue also cover one of Malaysia’s leading tourist destinations. Langkawi or fondly known as the Jewel of Kedah, is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea and about 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia and a part of the state of Kedah. Langkawi is famous for its stunning beaches as well, such as Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Burau Bay, Datai Bay and Pantai Kok. It is also popular with its Tasik Dayang Bunting, the Kilim Geoforest Park, Langkawi Skybridge and Makam Mahsuri. For those who love shopping, Langkawi offers an exhilarating shopping experiences and Kuah happens to be Langkawi’s main location for shopping outlets. From Jetty Point Duty Free Complex up to Cuban Attitude, these are surely a retail paradise. Another highlight in our Destinations of the Month is Hanoi, Vietnam. Referred as the City of Big Net, Lies on the right bank of the Red River, Hanoi was established more than 1000 years ago. Hanoi is considered one of the main cultural centres of Vietnam, where most of the Vietnamese dynasties have left their imprints. The city hosts more cultural sites than any city in Vietnam and that of the past few hundred years has been well preserved. Today, Hanoi is experiencing a rapid development with skyscrapers popping up in new urban areas. Tourism is also an increasing industry in Hanoi, where according to Trip Advisor; Hanoi is ranked 14 in its list of top 25 destinations Asia (by travelers’ choice). Halong Bay and One Pillar Pagoda are two of Hanoi’s popular tourists’ attraction, where the first one is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the latter is a historic Buddhist and one of most iconic temples in Vietnam. It is bordered by Kedah in the north and east, and Perak in the south. Penang is the second smallest Malaysian state in area after Perlis, and the eighth most populous. It is composed of two parts –Penang Island, where the seat of government is, and Seberang Perai (formerly Province Wellesley in English) on the Malay Peninsula. Highly urbanised and industrialised Penang is one of the most developed and economically important states in the country, as well as a thriving tourist destination. Penang has the third-highest Human Development Index in Malaysia, after the state of Selangor and the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur. Its heterogeneous population is highly diverse in ethnicity, culture, language, and religion. A resident of Penang is colloquially known as a Penangite. NAME http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang The name "Penang" comes from the modern Malay name Pulau Pinang, which means "island of the areca nut palm" (Areca catechu, family Palmae). The name Penang may refer either to the island of Penang (Pulau Pinang) or the state of Penang (Negeri Pulau Pinang). In Malay, Penang's capital George Town was called and labelled in old maps as Tanjung Penaga (Cape Penaigre), named after the many ballnut trees (also known as Alexandrian laurels, Calophyllum inophyllum) on the coast, but now usually shortened as Tanjung (the Cape). Penang is often known as "The Pearl of the Orient", "ϱᮎ㢆ೂ" (Garden of the East) and Pulau Pinang Pulau Mutiara (Penang, Island of Pearls). Penang is shortened as "PG" or "PP" in Malay. Early Malays called it Pulau Ka-Satu or "First (or Single) Island" because it was the largest island encountered on the trading sea-route between Lingga and Kedah. TheSiamese, then the overlord of the Kedah Sultanate, referred to the island as Koh Maak. In the 15th century, the island of Penang was referred to as Bīnláng Yù (simplified Chinese: ᾴὩቔ; traditional Chinese: ₈ Ὡ᎑) in the navigational drawings used by Admiral Zheng He of Ming-dynasty China in his expeditions to the South Seas. The 16th-century Portuguese historian Emanuel Godinho de Eredia's map of the Malay Peninsula in his "Description of Malaca" in 1613 referred to the island as Pulo Pinaom. 03 2nd Quarter 2014 TOUCHÉ Magazine FORUM OUTLYING ISLETS There are a number of small islets off the coast of Penang, the biggest of which, Pulau Jerejak, is located in the narrow channel between Penang Island and the mainland. Starting as a leper asylum in 1868 and later a maximum-security penal colony (till 1993), Jerejak is now a tourist attraction offering jungle trails and a spa resort. Other islands include Pulau Aman, Pulau Betong, Pulau Gedung, Pulau Kendi (Coral Island) and Pulau Rimau. PERANAKAN The Peranakan, also known as the Straits Chinese or Baba-Nyonya, are the descendants of the early Chinese immigrants to Penang, Malacca and Singapore. They have partially adopted Malay customs and speak a Chinese-Malay creole of which many words contributed to Penang Hokkien as well (such as "Ah Bah" which means Mister, referring to a man as "Baba"). The Peranakan community possesses a distinct identity in terms of food, dress, rites, crafts and culture. Most of the Peranakan Chinese are not Muslims but practise an eclectic form of ancestor worship and Chinese religion, while some were Christians. They prided themselves as being Anglophone and distinguished themselves from the newly arrived Chinamen or sinkheh. The Peranakan as a living culture, however, are almost extinct today due to their re-absorption into the mainstream Chinese community, otherwise being Westernized. Still, their legacy lives on in their distinctive architecture (exemplified by the Pinang Peranakan Mansion and the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, cuisine, elaborate nyonya kebaya costume and exquisite handicrafts. 04 TOUCHÉ Magazine 2nd Quarter 2014 FORUM ARTS AND CULTURE The Penang State Museum house artefacts and cultural exhibits. The present building, which was formerly the Penang Free School, is actually half a building, the other half of the building having been destroyed by aerial bombing during World War II. A bronze cast of Captain Francis Light, used to stand outside the museum building. It has since returned toFort Cornwallis where it was first unveiled by the colonial administration. A small museum, it has a fine collection of old photographs, maps and historical records charting the growth of Penang from the days of Francis Light. COVER STORY The Penang State Art Gallery and the Pinang Gallery showcase the works of local artists. A newer gallery, the USM ABN-Amro Arts and Cultural Centre, located at Beach Street, was established in 2002 to promote art awareness among Penang citizens. Sadly the USM ABN-Amro Arts and Cultural Centre closed down in early December 2006 due to lack of patronage. The Universiti Sains Malaysia Museum and Gallery possesses a large ethnographic and performing arts section with a special exhibition on wayang kulit. The art gallery features works by Malaysian artists. Other establishments promoting art awareness include the Alliance française de Penang and Hotel Bellevue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang Penang has a relatively active arts scene. The Penang State Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (Pessoc) is a government-supported youth orchestra and choir. The Penang Symphony Orchestra is another amateur orchestra. The Fingerprints Chamber Choir is a leading chamber choir, with members comprising mainly singing teachers and advanced singing students. It has won prizes at several competitions and performs regularly at various festivals and recitals in the country. Other ensembles include the Penang State Chinese Orchestra (a Chinese instrumental orchestra), ProArt Chinese Orchestra, and many other school-based musical groups. Penang hosts the annual Penang-YTL Arts Festival in December, with theatrical performances, contemporary and traditional dances, art and photography exhibitions, as well as concerts of classical and modern music. The programmes are drawn up by the Penang Arts Council every year and are partly sponsored by the YTL Group of Companies, a corporate patron of the arts scene in Malaysia. Penang is also home to the indigenous boria, a fading art form with singing and dancing once popular among the local Malay community. Lion dance is an ancient art form brought from China by early Chinese immigrants, and over time has evolved into a distinctive Malaysian style. The earliest record of lion dancing in Malaysia was the official registration of a Penang lion dance troupe back in 1903 but it is indisputable that the Chinese community had been practising it long before then. The Chinese place special significance to this dazzling form of art, associating it good luck, power, strength, majesty and happiness. Today lion dance remains actively performed especially during Chinese New Year and also during the opening of new businesses. 05 2nd Quarter 2014 TOUCHÉ Magazine FORUM LANGUAGE The common languages of Penang, depending on social classes, social circles, and ethnic backgrounds are Malay, Mandarin, English, Penang Hokkien and Tamil. Mandarin, which is taught in Chinese-medium schools in the state, is increasingly spoken. Penang Hokkien is a variant of Minnan and is widely spoken by a substantial proportion of the Penang populace who are descendants of Chinese settlers. Many police officers also take a course in Hokkien. It bears strong resemblance to the language spoken by Chinese living in the Indonesian city of Medan and is based on the Minnan dialect of Zhangzhou, Fujian. It incorporates a large number of loanwords from Malay and English. Most Penang Hokkien speakers are not literate in Hokkien but instead read and write in standard (Mandarin) Chinese, English and/or Malay. Other Chinese dialects, including Hakka spoken in state and mostly Balik Pulau, Cantonese are also spoken in the state. Teochew is heard more in Seberang Perai than on Penang island. Malay, the language of the indigenous population, the official language of the state, as well as the medium of instruction of national schools, is spoken in the northern accent, with characteristic words such as "hang", "depa", and "kupang". Syllables ending with "a" are typically stressed. English, a colonial legacy, is a working language widely used in commerce, education, and the arts. English used in an official or formal context is predominantly British English with American influences. Spoken English, as in the rest of Malaysia, is often in the form of Manglish (Malaysian colloquial English). 06 TOUCHÉ Magazine 2nd Quarter 2014 FORUM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang BUKIT BENDERA (PENANG HILL) Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks in Penang, Malaysia. It is located in Air Itam, which is 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from the city center of George Town. The hill stands out prominently from the lowlands as a hilly and forested area. Penang Hill is also known by the Malay name Bukit Bendera, which refers to Flagstaff Hill, the most developed peak. Penang Hill is mainly hilly granitic mass. The hill system is higher towards the northern part with its highest point at Western Hill, at an elevation of 833 m (2,723 ft) above sea level. Other than Western Hill, there are a number of peaks in the region, such as Bukit Laksamana (Malay for Admiral Hill), Tiger Hill, Flagstaff Hill and Government Hill. Flagstaff Hill is 735 m (2,450 ft) above sea level. The most convenient way up to Penang Hill is by means of the Penang Hill Railway, a funicular railway from Air Itam to the top of Flagstaff Hill. Construction of the railway took place between 1906 to 1923, at a cost of 1.5 million Straits dollars. The railway was opened to the public on October 21, 1923. The 2,007 m (1 mile 435 yard) journey takes about half an hour and the train may stop at intermediate stations upon request. For Malaysians, the fare for a return (round trip) ticket is RM8 per adult and RM4 per child aged between three and 12. For foreign tourists, the return fare would be RM30 for adults and RM15 for children aged seven to 12.[1] Senior citizens and students will enjoy cheaper fares at RM4 per person. The ride continues to remain free of charge for disabled persons holding the OKU (Malay acronym forOrang Kurang Upaya) card. Penang Hill residents, licensed traders and hawkers and workers can purchase monthly season pass at RM24. The blue, air-conditioned Swiss-made coaches, capable of ferrying up to 100 passengers at one go, will run every half hour from 6.30am to 9pm daily. GURNEY DRIVE Gurney Drive is a popular seafront promenade in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. The road is also one Penang's most popular tourist destinations, famous for the "hawker food" sold from food stalls formerly located along the seafront, now relocated close by. Previously known as the New Coast Road, it was completed in 1936 along what was then known as the North Beach, and renamed in 1952 after Sir Henry Gurney, British High Commissioner in Malaya (1950–1951), who was assassinated by the guerrillas of the Malayan Communist Party during the Malayan Emergency. 07 Over the years, the beaches along Gurney Drive have largely been lost to coastal erosion. More recently, a land reclamation project at nearby Tanjung Tokong has reversed the erosion, leading to the accretion of silt and mud off Gurney Drive. Mangrove saplings have sprouted in the mud, which is now frequented by egrets and other birds as well as mudskippers. There have been suggestions that this area, formerly earmarked for reclamation under the (now suspended) Penang Outer Ring Road project, be reclaimed for a recreational park or allowed to be developed into a mangrove forest. 2nd Quarter 2014 TOUCHÉ Magazine FORUM 1) G Hotel, Penang | 168A Persiaran Gurney, 10250 George Town | Tel: 60 4-238 0000 2) Traders Hotel, Penang | Jalan Magazine, Georgetown, 10300 Penang, Pulau Pinang | Tel: +60 4-262 2622 3) Hard Rock Hotel, Penang | 11100 Batu Ferringhi Beach, Penang, Malaysia | Tel: +60 4-881 1711 4) Holiday Inn Hotel, Penang | Kampung Batu Feringgi, 11100 Penang, Pulau Pinang | Tel: +60 4-886 6666 5) Eastin Hotel, Penang | 1 Solok Bayan Indah, Queensbay, 11900 Bayan Lepas, Penang Tel: +60 4-612 1111 08 TOUCHÉ Magazine 2nd Quarter 2014 FORUM PENANG TOUR 3D2N PENANG TOUR from PACKAGE INCLUDES: * Two (2) Nights Accommodation with daily breakfast at hotel * Return airport transfer RM340 * Tour and sightseeing as per itinerary PACKAGE EXCLUDES: * Return airfare * Admission fees for local attraction * Personal expenses * Optional tour HOTEL Cititel Hotel Superior Room Flamingo by the beach Deluxe Seaviev Traders Hotel Deluxe Room Hard Rock Hotel ADULT TWIN MYR 340 CHILD WITH BED MYR 270 CHILD NO BED MYR 170 MYR 370 MYR 310 MYR 180 MYR 550 MYR 488 MYR 200 NOTE: MYR 660 MYR 465 MYR 200 1. Its population in 2009 was estimated at 2.6 million for urban districts, 6.5 million for the metropolitan jurisdiction. From 1010 until 1802, it was the most important political center of Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Hue, the imperial capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945), but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam, and it became the capital of a reunified Vietnam in 1976, after the North's victory in the Vietnam War. The city lies on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is 1,760 km (1,090 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City and 120 km (75 mi) west of Hai Phong city. October 2010 officially marked 1000 years since the establishment of the city. The Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural is a 4 km ceramic mosaic mural created to mark the occasion. The city will host the 2019 Asian Games. 11 2nd Quarter 2014 TOUCHÉ Magazine TRAVEL SHOWCASE MODERN HANOI On May 29, 2008, it was decided that Hà Tây Province, Vĩnh Phúc Province's Mê Linh District and 4 communes of Luong Son District, Hòa Bình Province be merged into the metropolitan area of Hanoi from August 1, 2008. Hanoi's total area then increased to 334,470 hectares in 29 subdivisions with the new population being 6,232,940, effectively tripling its size. The Hanoi Capital Region, a metropolitan area covering Hanoi and 6 surrounding provinces under its administration, will have an area of 13,436 square kilometres (5,188 sq mi) with a population of 15 million by 2020. Hanoi experienced a rapid construction boom recently. Skyscrapers, popping up in new urban areas, dramatically change the citiscape of Hanoi. According to Skyscrapercity website, in 2013, two tallest buildings in Hanoi are Hanoi Landmark 72 Tower (336m, tallest in Vietnam and second tallest in Southeast Asia after Malaysia's Petronas Twin Towers) and Hanoi Lotte Center (267m, also second tallest in Vietnam). LANDMARKS As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered one of the main cultural centers of Vietnam, where most Vietnamese dynasties have left their imprint. Even though some relics have not survived through wars and time, the city still has many interesting cultural and historic monuments for visitors and residents alike. Even when the nation's capital moved to Hue under the Nguyen Dynasty in 1802, the city of Hanoi continued to flourish, especially after the French took control in 1888 and modeled the city's architecture to their tastes, lending an important aesthetic to the city's rich stylistic heritage. The city hosts more cultural sites than any city in Vietnam, and boasts more than 1,000 years of history, and that of the past few hundred years has been well preserved. 12 TOUCHÉ Magazine 2nd Quarter 2014 TRAVEL SHOWCASE TOURISM According to Trip Index by Trip Advisor, for period June 1 to August 31, 2012 Hanoi will be the cheapest city in the world for two of a one-night stay in a four-star hotel, cocktails, a two-course dinner with a bottle of wine, and a taxi transport (two return journeys of about 3.2 km (2.0 mi) each). It will cost of $141.12 or about 27 percent of the most expensive city, London with cost of $518.01. In 2013, Hanoi is ranked 14 in Trip Advisor's list of top 25 destinations Asia (by travelers choice). CUISINE Hanoi has rich food traditions and many of Vietnam's most famous dishes, such as pho, cha cá, bánh cuon and com are thought to come from Hanoi. Perhaps most widely known is Pho, a simple rice noodle soup often eaten as a breakfast dish in the home or at street side cafes, but also served in restaurants as a meal. Two varieties dominate the Hanoi scene: Pho Bò, containing beef, and Pho Gà, containing chicken. Hanoi has a number of restaurants whose menus specifically offer dishes containing dog, snake and various species of insects. Insect inspired menus can be found at a number of restaurants in Khuong Thuong village, Hanoi. The signature dishes at these restaurant are those containing processed ant-eggs, often in the culinary styles of Thai people or Vietnam's Muong and Tay ethnic people. TRANSPORT Hanoi is served by Noi Bai International Airport, located in the Soc Son District, approximately 40 km (25 mi) north of Hanoi. Noi Bai is the only international airport for the northern regions of Vietnam. Hanoi will have additionally another international airport, which will cost $8 billion, being the highest foreign investment so far in the history of Vietnam. The construction will be carried out in three stages, the first phase started in 2011 and will continue until 2015. There are two main highways linking the airport and city. The route to the city via Thăng Long Bridge is more direct than Highway 1, which runs along the outskirts of the city. The main highways are shared by cars, motor scooters, with separate lanes by the side for bicycles. Taxis are plentiful and usually have trip meters, although it is also common to agree on the trip price before taking a taxi from airport to the city centre. Tourists also sometimes tour the city on cycles especially in the Old Quarter. Hanoi is also the origin departure point for many Vietnam Railways train routes in the country. The Reunification Express (tàu Thong Nhat) runs from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City from Hanoi station (formerly Hang Co station), with stops at cities and provinces along the line. Trains also depart Hanoi frequently for Hai Phong and other northern cities. The Reunification Express line was established during French colonial rule, and was completed over a period of nearly forty years, from 1899 to 1936. The Reunification Express between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City covers a distance of 1,726 km (1,072 mi) and takes approximately 33 hours. As of 2005, there were 278 stations on the Vietnamese railway network, of which 191 were located along the North-South line. The main means of transport within Hanoi city are motorbikes, buses, taxis, and bicycles. Over the preceding decades, motorbikes have overtaken bicycles as the main form of transportation. The increased number of motorcycles can cause gridlocks. To reduce them and the negative consequences for environment and health the local government tries to increase public transportation. Public buses run on many routes and fare can be purchased on the bus, with very cheap prices (20 cents for a journey where a taxi might cost $10.) 13 2nd Quarter 2014 TOUCHÉ Magazine TRAVEL SHOWCASE POPULATION Hanoi's population is constantly growing (about 3.5% per year), a reflection of the fact that the city is both a major metropolitan area of Northern Vietnam, and also the country's political center. This population growth also puts a lot of pressure onto the infrastructure, some of which is antiquated and dates back from the early 20th century. The number of Hanoians who settled down for more than three generations is likely to be very small as compared to the overall population of the city. Even in the Old Quarter, where commerce started hundreds years ago and was mostly a family business, many of the street-front stores nowadays are owned by merchants and retailers from other provinces. The original owner family may have either rented out the store and moved to live further inside the house, or just moved out of the neighbourhood altogether. The pace of change has especially escalated after the abandonment of central-planning economic policies, and relaxing of the district-based household registrar system. 14 TOUCHÉ Magazine 2nd Quarter 2014 TRAVEL SHOWCASE PLACE OF INTEREST I) HALONG BAY Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a popular travel destination, located in Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam. Administratively, the bay belongs to Ha Long City, Cam Pha town, and part of Vân Đon District. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes. H Long Bay is a center of a larger zone which includes Bái Tu Long bay to the northeast, and Cát Bà islands to the southwest. These larger zones share similar geological, geographical, geomorphological, climate, and cultural characters. Ha Long Bay has an area of around 1,553 km2, including 1,960–2,000 islets, most of which are limestone. The core of the bay has an area of 334 km2 with a high density of 775 islets. The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments. The evolution of the karst in this bay has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate. The geo-diversity of the environment in the area has created biodiversity, including a tropical evergreen biosystem, oceanic and sea shore biosystem. Ha Long Bay is home to 14 endemic floral species and 60 endemic faunal species. Historical research surveys have shown the presence of pre historical human beings in this area tens of thousands years ago. The successive ancient cultures are the Soi Nhu culture around 18,000–7000 BC, the Cái Bèo culture 7000–5000 BC and the Ha Long culture 5,000–3,500 years ago. Ha Long Bay also marked important events in the history of Vietnam with many artifacts found in Bài Tho Mout, Đau Go Cave, Bãi Cháy. 500 years ago, Nguyen Trãi praised the beauty of Ha Long Bay in his verse Lo nhap Vân Đon, in which he called it "rock wonder in the sky". In 1962, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of North Vietnam listed Ha Long Bay in the National Relics and Landscapes publication. In 1994, the core zone of Ha Long Bay was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site according to criterion vii, and listed for a second time according to criterion viii. II) ONE PILLAR PAGODA The One Pillar Pagoda is a historic Buddhist temple in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. It is regarded alongside the Perfume Temple, as one of Vietnam's two most iconic temples. The temple was built by Emperor Lý Thái Tông, who ruled from 1028 to 1054. According to the court records, Lý Thái Tông was childless and dreamt that he met the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who handed him a baby son while seated on a lotus flower. Lý Thái Tông then married a peasant girl that he had met and she bore him a son. The emperor constructed the temple in gratitude for this in 1049, having been told by a monk named Thien Tue to build the temple, by erecting a pillar in the middle of a lotus pond, similar to the one he saw in the dream. The temple was located in what was then the Tây Cam Garden in Thach Bao, Vĩnh Thuan district in the capital Thăng Long (now known as Hanoi). Before the pagoda was opened, prayers were held for the longevity of the monarch. During the Lý Dynasty era, the temple was the site of an annual royal ceremony on the occasion of Vesak, the birthday of Gautama Buddha. A Buddha-bathing ceremony was held annually by the monarch, and it attracted monks and laymen alike to the ceremony. The monarch would then free a bird, which was followed by the people. 15 The temple was renovated in 1105 by Emperor Lý Nhân Tông and a bell was cast and an installation was attempted in 1109. However, the bell, which was regarded as one of the four major capital works of Vietnam at the time, was much too large and heavy, and could not be installed. Since it could not be tolled while left on the ground, it was moved into the countryside and deposited in farmland adjacent to Nhat Tru Temple. 2nd Quarter 2014 TOUCHÉ Magazine TRAVEL SHOWCASE HANOI, VIETNAM TOUR 4D3N HANOI, VIETNAM TOUR from RM890 PACKAGE INCLUDES: * Hotel Accommodation with Breakfast ( based on twin sharing ) * Private Transportation and Tours * English and mandarin speaking guide * 2D1N Overnight on cruise * Entrance fees and sightseeing as per itinerary * 100% Halal food and seafood at local restaurant as mentioned * Mineral water on coach (1 bottle per pax per day) PACKAGE EXCLUDES: * Airfare * Tipping for local guide and driver ( estimate RM 15.00 per person per day ) * Travel insurance HOTEL Adult Twin Child with Bed Child No Bed Adult Single Royal Zen, Zen Hotel or similar Demantoid 11 or similar Chalcedony Hotel or similar Sunway Hotel or similar Nikko Hotel or similar RM 890 RM 630 RM 540 RM 1310 RM 940 RM 660 RM 570 RM 140 RM 1120 RM 790 RM 680 RM 1780 RM 1260 RM 890 RM 760 RM 2010 RM 1360 RM 960 RM 820 RM 2180 VALID UNTIL 30 ( estimate RM 35.00 per person per day ) NOTE: 1. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border. On July 15, 2008, Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah had consented to the change of name to Langkawi Permata Kedah in conjunction with his Golden Jubilee Celebration. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi with a population of some 64,792, the only other inhabited island being nearby Pulau Tuba. Langkawi is also an administrative district with the town of Kuah as largest town. Langkawi is a duty-free island. GEOGRAPHY Langkawi, a cluster of 104 islands separated from mainland Malaysia by the Straits of Malacca, is a district of the state of Kedah in Northern Malaysia and lies approximately 51 km west of Kedah. The total land mass of the islands is 47,848hectares. The main island spans about 25 km from north to south and slightly more for east and west. The coastal areas consist of flat, alluvial plains punctuated with limestone ridges. Two-thirds of the island is dominated by forest-covered mountains, hills and natural vegetation. The island's oldest geological formation, Gunung Matchincang, was the first part of South-East Asia to rise from the seabed in the Cambrian period more than half a billion years ago. The oldest part of the formation is observable at Teluk Datai to the north-west of the island, where the exposed outcrop consists of mainly sandstone (quartzite) in the upper parts and shale and mudstone in the lower parts of the sequence. 17 2nd Quarter 2014 TOUCHÉ Magazine TRAVEL SHOWCASE LANGKAWI ISLANDS There are two island areas: the Southern Islands, with a heavy tourist population and the islands to the north east which are more secluded without tourist traffic. Langun Island has a fresh-water lake like Pregnant Maiden Lake only without the tourists and has Sand Spit Beach on its south-facing orientation. Dendang Island next to it forms a bay popular with Langkawi sailing yacht tour operators who favour the area for its natural beauty and peace. Some of the most popular beaches are Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Burau Bay, Pantai Kok, and Datai Bay. Pantai Cenang is a picturesque beach with seemingly unending stretches of fine white sand. It has numerous restaurants and bars for evening entertainment, several hosting live music and for watching the sun set. The beach is contoured by tall coconuts and casuarinas. Pantai Tengah is separated from Cenang by a small cape. It too faces the setting sun and is populated more by hotels than bars, making it less busy in the evening. Burau Bay, fringed by rocky outcrops, is the favorite place of migratory birds in Langkawi. Pantai Kok is a peaceful beach with the backdrop of limestone hills. Datai Bay has a combination of forests and sea. The milky beach is backed by lush forest. The Langkawi Cable Car takes visitors up to the peak of Gunung Mat Chinchang, where the Langkawi Sky Bridge is located. Tourists can enter the island via ferry from Kuala Perlis or by flight from Kuala Lumpur. AirAsia and Fireflyz provides budget connection to the island. THE KILIM KARST GEOFOREST PARK ( THE KILIM RIVER ) This area actually consists of three river estuaries that stretch from the Kisap village approximately 10 km to Tanjung Rhu and they are all interconnected. They are rich in wildlife and tourists may see hairy nosed sea otters, brown winged kingfishers, monitor lizards and swimming macaque monkeys. Limestone, inherently porous, forms caves and there are several in the mangroves. One of Langkawi's natural beauty spots is the Pirate Lagoon just outside the river. Technically this is a collapsed cave (hong) consisting of a cave entrance from the sea emerging into a hidden lagoon with towering, limestone escarpments and smaller caves TRANSPORTION The island of Langkawi can be reached by sea and air. The Langkawi Jetty Point connects the island to main destinations like Kuala Perlis, Kuala Kedah, Penang and Tamalang. There's also ferry service to Satun town and to Ko Lipe island in Thailand. The Langkawi International Airport is one of 7 international airports in Malaysia and connects the island to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Penang and also Subang. On the island, a main road runs through the whole island. The best method of transportation in the island is by renting a vehicle. Below are the estimated rental price ranges per day during the non-peak season as of 15 January 2014. · Motorcycle - RM 18 to RM 30 (Helmets are required and are provided by shop) · Car - RM 80 to RM 150 · MPV - RM 100 to RM 200 18 TOUCHÉ Magazine 2nd Quarter 2014 TRAVEL SHOWCASE PLACE OF INTEREST I) LANGKAWI SKY BRIDGE Langkawi Sky Bridge is a 125 metres (410 ft) curved pedestrian cable-stayed bridge in Malaysia, completed in 2005. It is located 700 metres (2,300 ft) above sea level at the peak of Gunung Mat Chinchang on Pulau Langkawi, an island in the Langkawi archipelago in Kedah. The last scene of Indian movie Don: The Chase Begins Again was filmed here. The Langkawi Sky Bridge is accessible by the Langkawi Cable Car. It is not accessible at the moment as of 15 January 2014. Informed by management that the Sky Bridge is undergoing renovations and maintenance and might not be restored indefinitely. II) TELAGA TUJUH WATERFALL http://www.langkawi-info.com/attractions/telaga-tujuh-watefalls.htm Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls is billed as the island’s most wonderful natural attraction. Set on Langkawi’s western headlands, its name means Seven Wells Waterfalls, referring to a series of seven connected natural pools fed by seven separate waterfalls in Mount Mat Cincang. Managed by the Berjaya Leisure (part of the bigwig Berjaya Group), there is an ugly pipeline that runs next to the pools and the waterfall goes all the way to the Berjaya Langkawi Beach Resort. III) MAKAM MAHSURI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahsuri Mahsuri was the daughter of a Malay couple who moved from their native Phuket to the island of Langkawi in search of a better life. She was the most beautiful in all of Langkawiand married the warrior Wan Darus. As was required of him, her husband had to go to war, leaving Mahsuri behind to fend for herself. It was during this time that Mahsuri befriended a young man named Deraman. The village chief's wife was jealous of Mahsuri's beauty. She spread a rumour that Mahsuri was unfaithful and was having an affair with Deraman in the absence of Wan Darus. Eventually the rumours grew strong enough that the villagers openly accused her of adultery. Mahsuri pleaded her innocence, but no one believed her. Mahsuri was to be tied to a tree (or pole) and stabbed to death but it didn't work. After every execution attempt failed, Mahsuri told them to kill her with her family's kris. When she was stabbed, white blood flowed from the wound, signifying her innocence. Some birds flew above her to cover her body. With her dying breath, Mahsuri cursed Langkawi to have seven generations of bad luck. The kingdom was soon taken over by Siam. The villagers at Padang Mat Sirat burned their own paddy fields rather than let them fall into the hands of the Siamese. 19 2nd Quarter 2014 TOUCHÉ Magazine TRAVEL SHOWCASE LANGKAWI TOUR 4D3N LANGKAWI PACKAGE INCLUDES: TOUR from RM585 * Three (3) Nights Accommodation with daily breakfast * Return airport transfer * Tour and sightseeing * Meals as per itinerary PACKAGE EXCLUDES: * Airfare * Admission fees for local attraction * Personal expenses HOTEL Triple Share Twin Share Child with Bed N/A RM 585 N/A M 290 Holiday Villa Beach resort 4* RM 715 RM 840 RM 530 RM 370 Sheraton Beach Resort 5* RM 1200 RM 1330 RM 960 RM 365 Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort 5* RM 1090 RM 1370 RM 560 RM 210 Bella Vista Resort 3* VALID UNTIL 30 Child No Bed NOTE: 1.
