It was after Peter had denied Jesus three times that he most needed the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Peter’s tears of remorse show us his true repentance and we see in Acts 2 how God used him to powerfully call 3000 people to faith in Jesus: ‘Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:38-39) From his own experience of God’s forgiveness and baptism with the Holy Spirit Peter called others to faith and baptism with the Spirit. Like Peter, and like those young Christians I met in Southern Sudan we too are to “Walk by the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16). Then the risen Jesus and the rising Spirit of God can result in our lives being taken over by the wonder and joy of a Lord God who died on the Cross in our place and who then sends His Holy Spirit give us new life. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!” Easter 2013 CARRYING THE CROSS GOOD FRIDAY AT 12.30pm Please do join as we seek to express our shared gratitude to the Christ who loved us and died for us. The historic Cathedral building in the heart of the city has been subject to a series of renovation and refurbishment works in recent years. Phase one, the exterior work, was completed two years ago. However during the intervening years the Vestry under God’s guidance has overseen the repair and renovated of the Cathedral and built a new Rectory at a cost of £1,200,000. How did this happen? The old rectory and site produced £760k, grants received totalled £365k and you the congregation gave £75k. This would not have been possible without a dedicated team of volunteers manning the Coffee Area and our thanks go out to all of them and to their coordinators Karen Webb and Garvin Jess. We also received about £70k from investments that was spent primarily on the upkeep and improvement of our halls and other buildings. So we are left with borrowings of £100k, and bank changes will be approx £1000 per month for the next decade. Surely it would be better not to wait the 10 years! I’m sure you’ll agree that under God’s guidance we have achieve great results in the wonderfully restored Cathedral building. We would ask everyone to give as generously as possible this Easter in the Cathedral Restoration Fund envelopes to bring down the overdraft and to help us progress in our service for God who has so greatly blessed us. I t was a joy to see over 80 people gather for registration and morning coffee in Lisburn Cathedral’s new Coffee Room, and there was a great buzz during morning praise led by the Cathedral’s worship team. The Bishop of Connor welcomed everyone. Our keynote speaker, Rev Charlie Cleverly from St. Aldates Oxford, gave a wonderful encouragement on the place of preaching. There was a choice of four seminars. Charlie Cleverly “Preaching with Imagination”; Rev Vanessa Conant - “Teaching Christian Living in a Secular Age”; Rev Simon Genoe “Preaching and Teaching those in their 20’s and 30’s”; and - “Unpacking the Preaching of the Word of God”. The seminar speakers also contributed to a lively questions and answers session. that people found each of the seminars insightful, powerful and helpful. We have a committed group of leaders and JL Team members, but are always keen to have more added to our number. Our JL Team is coordinated by our Xplore Team, Amy Webb and Aimee Jess, who have now introduced Check In and Check out. Each week the JL Team meet before Kidzone and have time together to talk and pray. The Xplore team set them a challenge to help them engage with the children. Anything from “what is your favourite colour” to “how many siblings do you have?” The JL Team has risen to the challenge and at Check- out the most original story of the evening is given a prize. Well done to all who take part. Kidzone Sunday continues to learn along with the main Church body and this term we have studied the Fruit of the Spirit. The children have amazed us by their insight and understanding of what it means to know and love God. We have much to learn from the children in our Church family. Our next All Age worship time is Palm Sunday - 24th March @ 11am. Do please come along and hear all about the Colours of Easter, as a follow on from the Colours of Christmas. 8 ADVANCE NOTICE Our Holiday Bible Club this year will be from Monday 29th July until 2nd August. Spring 2013 Easter 2013 Lisburn Cathedral Mag.indd 8 14/03/2013 00:28 Lisburn Cathedral 20-30s Ministry We are thankful for the way we are seeing young adults engage more and more with the life of the Church. F rom our young adults involved in leading worship, to those leading prayers, and to one preaching during our Holy Week services in a few weeks, it is a blessing to see them taking their place in week-by-week worship. As well as asking them to serve, which they are doing fantastically, we also want to invest in them as disciples in the Cathedral and in the wider church. In a wider sense, we are engaging with the Church of “it has been brilliant to see the group that has gathered and the discussions that have developed ” Ireland’s bi-monthly 20-30s event “Foundations” in the Dock Café, and had a number of our group there. A number of us are also going to New Wine Sligo summer conference in July. In the cathedral, we have begun a discipleship group called “Chats” which meets in the Coffee Room every second Friday night, where we read the Bible and chat about it. We’re currently studying the letter to the Philippians, and it has been brilliant to see the group that has gathered and the discussions that have meetings. If you’re in that age bracket and want to get involved, chat to Simon. Margaret, Margaret, Helen and Joan February 14 was a CAMEO afternoon! W ith red hearts everywhere, we had a wonderful Valentine’s Day lunch - chicken and broccoli bake and a delicious dessert trolley! We celebrated with May Bratty who was born on Valentine’s day a few years ago! Those who go the 9.30 service will know May; we think her secret of long life and her happy outlook must lie either in her birthday date or in the fact that she brings the Clergy sweets every Sunday! Our after-lunch entertainment was songs from Cameo’s own Quivering Quavers accompanied keyboard…move over Leading Ladies and Treble Clef; and Liz Cunningham gave a masterful demonstration of playing the spoons. The rest of us need some more practice! 10 Apparently little is reliably known about St Valentine but he died on 14 February and is commemorated with a tradition of ‘courtly love’. John Quigley by presenting Margaret with a cup cake decorated with red hearts! Amidst the fun and entertainment which we have at CAMEO, we want each one of our seniors to know the love of the Father who says to them… “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving kindness I have drawn you” Jeremiah 31v 3. Please pray for them. New people are always very welcome to join us at CAMEO. outing on 20 June. Contact John Quigley on Tel: 028 9267 0509. Congratulations to Billy Andrews – celebrating his 80th birthday at CAMEO Spring 2013 Easter 2013 Lisburn Cathedral Mag.indd 10 14/03/2013 00:28 Lisburn Cathedral New teaching series In the build up to coming back into the refurbished Cathedral, we preached through the exciting book of Joshua. In December, we looked at the Holy Spirit-inspired songs of Christmas. Since January, we have focussed on the character of the Christian life through the fruit of the Holy Spirit. After Easter, we look forward to beginning a new teaching series on the Gifts of the Spirit “Now Concerning Spiritual Gifts, I don’t want you to be ignorant.” 1 Cor 12:1 - these are God’s gifts to equip, empower and encourage His Church. Paul was clear in speaking to the Church at Corinth, “I don’t want you to be ignorant about Spiritual Gifts,” so join us on Sunday mornings to hear more about the gifts God gives us through the power of the Holy Spirit. Spring 2013 Easter 2013 Lisburn Cathedral Mag.indd 11 11 14/03/2013 00:29 Lisburn Cathedral See, I am doing a new thing! “See I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up, do you not perceive it? I am making a new way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland”. Isaiah 43:19. 2 013 has been all about God doing a new thing in our Youth Ministry. A new look to our weekend has seen Saturday turn into an exciting experience for teens. It starts with Youth Cells at 6.30pm in the Coffee Room. This term we are following a new book by Francis Chan called Multiply, focused on growing disciples to make more disciples! As a church our greatest desire is to see a community of believers growing in faith, developing their gifts and being equipped to make more disciples. Our hope is that every young person in the Cathedral will come along each Saturday as they commit themselves to God’s Word. Following Youth Cells, our new Venue24 runs from 8-10pm in the hall. With a new layout, new activities and new young people we are seeing God really at work as new friendships, relationships and conversations happen in a way we haven’t seen for some time. The excitement is tangible as young people play new games, do crafts or activities, play football in our new cage, enjoy music or watch a movie in the cafe. With around 70-plus teens each week we cater for a good number of our church teens as well as reaching out to the 70% with little or no church connection. Once a month we have Soul Sister running alongside Venue24 in the cathedral and we have 30 to 40 girls enjoying a fun packed event and being challenged about their walk with God. With Judith heading up Soul Sister we are seeing a real impact in their lives. Guest speakers, fun activities and creative events make Soul Sisters a place for our girls to bring friends from school into the Cathedral for a great night! We have also relaunched MDD for the guys once a month with a mix of food, teaching and activities to build a strong group of young men living out their Christian faith together. Looking at issues affecting young lads today and what God has to say them is the basis of our get 12 Spring 2013 Easter 2013 Lisburn Cathedral Mag.indd 12 14/03/2013 00:29 Lisburn Cathedral together but we also have evenings when we go bowling, laser questing or for a night at the cinema. We are only a small group, but the fun and friendships are great. I suppose the verse from Isaiah is best seen not only in Venue24 but also in our schools work in Forthill College and with our work with the YMCA. As we bring Romance Academy into these places we see God challenging lifestyle choices, laying down biblical principles and morals to young people who often have never been challenged or told there is a better way. The conversations with pupils and staff have The Timothy Project starting to grow. We have been teaching Years 10/11 and 12 and now the college has asked us to teach lower sixth for the Our new link with the YMCA sees us running Romance Academy on a Tuesday night from their city centre premises. What a challenge and privilege to sit down week by week with older teens, many who we had to bar from Fusion because of alcohol abuse and disruptive behaviour, who see little hope for their future, who have no guidance or support in many areas of their lives. Again here in this wasteland we believe God is creating a new stream. Already, conversations about faith and being a Christian are being brought up by the teenagers. We had a picture from God of our work there being like Jesus sitting with the publicans and the undesirables of His day A team of nine will partner with Exodus this summer for Mission to Romania. Please pray for Keith and Judith as they lead Chloe Jess, Chloe Hassard, Becky Lester, Grace Broddle, Laura Kilpatrick, Alistair Brattle and Ciaran Steele through the 16 week bible study and mission preparation course on a Tuesday after school. More details will be available after Easter as we try to fundraise for the team. An exciting and busy summer is planned, with groups to Summer Madness and New Wine as well as us leading the Youth Venue and ministry at New Wine again. Through our work and Youth Ministry our aim is to bring Jesus into the lives of young people not only here in the Cathedral but across the city. We want to make Jesus known, to see lives changed, lives transformed by His Holy Spirit and to see that God is indeed doing a new thing. He is making a new way in the wilderness and bringing new fresh streams in the wasteland. Keith Neill T he Timothy Project has brought together 12 of our young people to explore what it is to be a leader, to work together as a team and to plan and organize and deliver their own projects. Choe Hassard (pictured) said “I am greatly enjoying being part of the Project, and am so excited for the Seed Weekend we are planning for all the young people from Year 8 plus in September! “We began our leadership preparation with a weekend away, and thoroughout our stay discovered more about ourselves, about God, and grew closer as a team. This is what we hope to recreate for everyone attending the Seed Weekend.” Chloe Jess said: “Through taking part in the Timothy Project I have been able to develop on a number of skills such as team work and communication. I have also had the opportunity of growing in my faith with a close group of friends which so far, has been a brilliant experience.” It is exciting to develop the great potential in our young leaders and to see them play an active part in the life of the Cathedral. Spring 2013 Easter 2013 Lisburn Cathedral Mag.indd 13 13 14/03/2013 00:29 Lisburn Cathedral Mongo Primary School welcomes new teachers For Judith Cairns and I, one of the highlights with the mission team in South Sudan during January, was meeting Timothy, whose training had been sponsored by our church. O n February 4 he would begin teaching in Mongo Primary School and he was looking forward to starting with great excitement. Timothy and his wife have four children and he is already planning for their education. In the middle of the celebrations at Mongo, Timothy had been asked to bring a special word of thanks on behalf of the new teachers and the school for the support for school building and training of teachers over many years by churches in Connor Diocese. It was a great joy to meet, chat and share with Timothy at such a crucial moment in his life. We also had a tour of the Yei Teacher training Centre, where the Principal, James Kepo has an impressive development plan to provide greater numbers of teachers for schools in the region. Thank you to all who have supported our work in South Sudan which will continue to make a lasting difference through the education of generations of children by trained teachers like Timothy. A full report of the Mission team visit to Yei Diocese, can be found in the “Spring 2013 edition of the Connor Connections Magazine” Sam 14 Spring 2013 Easter 2013 Lisburn Cathedral Mag.indd 14 14/03/2013 00:29 Lisburn Cathedral Fellowship at Seven An incredibly large thank you to everyone who has come along to church on a Sunday night! I t has been an eclectic mix of worship, discussion, coffee, prayer stations, movie clips and more, but despite the variety, each night people have really got involved. It has been a special joy to see people across the age groups of the Church joining in worship, and we would love to see even more of that on Sunday nights. Some of the things that have been done have been different for all of us, but the important thing is that each “ordinary people in the hands of an extraordinary God, a bit like us!” night people have chatted together and experienced encounters with God. Through our “Cast of Characters” series, we have looked at the lives of Esther, Joseph, Peter, Philip, Daniel, Mary and Mephibosheth, with a few more to come ordinary people in the hands of an extraordinary God, a bit like us! After Easter, we are beginning a new series on the letter known as 1st John and we would love to see a growing number of people growing in relationship with one another and in depth of friendship with God.
