Benefits of Physical Activity… Physical Activity can help reduce… Help maintain a healthy weight Type 2 diabetes by 40% Help maintain ability to perform everyday tasks with ease Cardiovascular disease by 35% Improve self-esteem Falls, Depression and Dementia by 30% Improve your mood Joint and back pain by 25% Help maintain cognitive function Cancers (Colon & Breast) by 20% Improves sleep Stress Levels Improves quality of life Difficulty in ability to carry out daily activities To stay healthy, adults aged 19-64 and adults aged over 65 who are generally fit and have no health conditions that limit their mobility, should try to be active daily and should do: at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking every week, and strength exercises on two or more days a week that work all the major muscles (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms) Adults aged 65 or older who are not generally fit and may have health conditions should see their GP prior to attempting any exercise to be advised on what level of activity they should participate in. An ideal starting point is to gradually increase levels of walking and decrease levels of sedentary movement for long periods of time. Children and young adults should reduce the time they spend sitting watching TV, playing computer games and travelling by car when they could walk or cycle instead. 4 5 Health & wellbeing Health & wellbeing BEEZEE BODIES At BeeZee Bodies we have something for everyone…men, women, pregnant women, children, toddlers, dogs (ok, maybe not dogs but we’re working on it )…we’ve got you covered. We have a bunch of programmes designed with real people in mind…to help you lose weight, make sustainable changes and see real results! Maybe this is the first time you’ve decided to even think about weight or maybe you’ve tried many times before and given every diet under the sun a go (cabbage soup anyone?). C M Y There is a lot of confusion out there about what’s the healthiest way to eat (e.g. carbs are evil, eat like a caveman, eat to balance your pH levels to name a few) but we want you to know our approach to losing weight and eating healthy is based on credible scientific research and all our programmes are run by qualified nutritionists and dietitians. We’re not about a quick fix. What we are about is making realistic changes and creating habits that help you become the happiest healthiest version of yourself. 6 CM MY CY CMY K 7 Health & wellbeing Health & wellbeing C M Y CM MY CY CMY K 9 Health & wellbeing Health & wellbeing C M Y CM MY CY CMY K 11 Walking for health WALK4HEALTH MONDAY Leighton Buzzard Weekly, 10.00am, 30, 60 & 80 minutes Meet at Bell Close (opposite Morrison’s garage). Walking for health It goes without saying I have met so many new people at all these activities and that has a hugely beneficial effect on one’s mental health. Many of these people have become good friends. I cannot stress enough how incredibly supportive (no matter what illness you have, physical or mental) the leaders have been! All the sessions are FREE of charge. 14 15 Family activities & parks FAMILY ACTIVITIES & PARKS Xplorer is a great way to help children learn how to read maps and can be a fun, family activity! Central Bedfordshire Council deliver Xplorer challenges on a selection of days during most school holidays at Chambers Way Park (Biggleswade), Ampthill Park, Rushmere Park (Leighton Buzzard) & Grove Corner Park (Dunstable). We are looking to develop this scheme in different areas so please keep your eye out for future locations! Please contact the Physical Activity team for more information at physical.activity@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk Leisure Services Managed Play Areas Central Bedfordshire Council Leisure Services currently owns and maintains the following 21 equipped children’s play areas. These are open spaces free to use. Play areas benefit a child as it is a form of exercise that promotes well-being and wholesome physical development. Children are naturally drawn to active play outdoors – it allows them to explore their environment, develop muscle strength and coordination, and gain self-confidence. Playing actively outdoors also increases flexibility, fine and gross motor skills and is related to the development of a wide variety of physical skills, including those involved in sports. Other play areas not on the list are managed by town/ parish councils or housing developers. For more information on the play areas please contact the Physical Activity Team at physical.activity@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk Play areas benefit a child as it is a form of exercise that promotes well-being and wholesome physical development. 16 Family activities & parks 18 Family activities & parks Housing managed Play Areas play@Tavistock Avenue Tavistock Avenue, Ampthill, MK45 2RY up to the age of 6 play@Chapel Drive Chapel Drive, Arlesey, SG15 6PB up to the age of 6 play@Chancellors Chancellors, Arlesey, SG15 6YB up to the age of 9 play@Howberry Howberry Green, Arlesey, SG15 6ZA up to the age of 6 play@Howberry Howberry Green, Arlesey, SG15 6ZA up to the age of 6 play@Chambers Way Chambers Way, Biggleswade, SG18 8ES up to the age of 14 play@Chambers Way Skate Park Chambers Way, Biggleswade, SG18 8ES No age play@Jubilee Close Jubilee Close, Clifton, SG17 5JN up to the age of 6 play@Spoondell Spoondell, Dunstable, LU6 3JE/F (Enclosed) up to the age of 9 play@Spoondell Spoondell, Dunstable, LU6 3JE/F (Open) up to the age of 14 play@Hatfield Crescent Hatfield Crescent, Flitwick, NK45 1ET up to the age of 14 Morcom Road, Dunstable play@Tithe Farm Close Tithe Farm Close, Langford, SG18 9NE up to the age of 6 Jardine Way, Dunstable play@Oakley Green Oakley Green, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 3EX (Enclosed) up to the age of 6 play@Oakley Green Oakley Green, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 3EX (Open) over the age of 7 play@Appenine Way Appenine Way, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 3XE (Enclosed) up to the age of 9 play@Appenine Way Appenine Way, Leighton Buzzard, LU7 3XE (Open) over the age of 9 play@The Rickyard The Rickyard, Lower Shelton, MK43 0NG up to the age of 6 play@Manor Road Manor Road, Marton Moretaine, MK43 0PD up to the age of 9 Elm Park Close, Houghton Regis play@Gardeners Close Gardeners Close, Maulden, MK45 2DY up to the age of 6 play@Gregory Close Gregory Close, Meppershall, SG17 5GA up to the age of 6 play@Wingfield Drive Wingfield Drive, Potton, SG19 2GQ (Enclosed) up to the age of 6 Meadow Way (central green), Leighton Buzzard play@Wingfield Drive Wingfield Drive, Potton, SG19 2GQ (Open) up to the age of 14 play@Bickerdikes Gardens Bickerdikes Gardens, Sandy, SG19 1UX (Enclosed) up to the age of 6 play@Churchill Way Churchill Way, Shefford, SG17 5UG/B over the age of 9 play@Kingfisher Road Kingfisher Road, Shefford, SG17 5YQ up to the age of 9 These play areas are managed by Central Bedfordshire Council’s Housing Department. Primarily targeting teenagers and adults with learning disabilities our project aims to develop a network of multi sports clubs to enhance individual opportunity and improve whole family wellbeing. All clubs are run on a ‘drop in’ basis. The activities vary from week to week, using different sports or just general FUN games, for example, ‘Stuck in the Mud’. The clubs are pan disability, so all are welcome, and we encourage people to come along to see if it’s for them. We try to create a very relaxed and fun atmosphere very much like a ‘Youth Club’ where adults and children can come and see / meet their friends away from schools and their local Day Centres. She looks forward to Tuesdays so much! As parents we look upon this session as “Therapy with the Therapist” This session is giving her the much needed exercise, stretching of her muscles, communication as well as social interaction with her team mates; therefore applying physiotherapy and speech therapy without realising. I would like to congratulate Central Bedfordshire Council and No Limits Team on this club in Houghton Regis. My daughter has a fantastic time. It provides her with exercise, fun and a chance to socialise with friends. The activities are suited to her abilities enabling her to be the same as her peers taking part being included and looked upon as a “normal person” Thanks to the brilliant staff that run this session for their time, patience and understanding of each individual participant. 38 39 No limits – Central Bedfordshire disability programme No limits – Central Bedfordshire disability programme Houghton Regis Disability Session 10 – 17 year olds My daughter, Olivia is 15 years old and has Global Developmental Delay. Due to her disability she is unable to do the activities mainstream children do without an adult with her. Only a few reasons my daughter needs and enjoys this club: This club gives her opportunity to socialise with other children who have differing needs – with a child with learning difficulties it is very difficult to find social groups that they can attend and be like any other child. The club gives her the opportunity to learn new skills including the sporting activity itself as well as communicating with others. I believe this gives her opportunity to mix with pupils from other schools rather than just her school friends, which is invaluable. I believe it has increased her confidence and self-belief.
