Stoch Wins Two Golds for Poland
By Raymond Rolak
Kamil Stoch, 26, is now a two
time gold medal winner for Poland
at the Sochi Olympics.
Because of his celebrity in
Poland, he was allowed by
the Polish Ministry of
National Defense to use the
Polish Air Force roundel on
his helmet. It only made
sense and was a great moral
booster for the other Polish
Olympians. Who flies higher
and more often than Stoch?
“It is a badge of excellence,”
said a spokesperson for the
Polish Olympic Team. The
Polish Ministry of Defense
considers the use of emblem as an
act of patriotism and goodwill.
The Polish Air Force red and
white checkerboard is the national
marking on military aircraft. It was
originally used as personal insignia
of Stefan Stec, a Polish fighter
pilot, and then in December of
1918, it became a national roundel

Will Return To Poland
Thanks to the joint efforts of
Poland’s Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Ministry of Culture and
National Heritage a long-lost painting from the pre-war collection of
the National Museum in Warsaw
will return to Poland. The work of
a well-known German artist Johann
Conrad Seekatz titled “St. Philip
Baptizing a Servant of Queen
Kandake” was handed over by the
US officials to Poland’s Minister of
Culture Bogdan Zdrojewski on
February 6.
The handover ceremony at the
Consulate General in NY was
attended by Poland’s Ambassador
to the US Ryszard Schnepf and
Consul General Ewa JunczykZiomecka, as well as New York
Special Agent in Charge James T.
Hayes, Jr. and U.S. Attorney Preet
Bharara, Southern District of New
York, representing US authorities.
“I am very happy that another
painting that was registered as a
Polish wartime loss comes back to
Poland today. Unfortunately, due to
our tragic history, the database of
Polish wartime losses is still enormous. However, the Polish govern-
ment attaches great importance to
this issue as it’s one of our key priorities. Using this opportunity, I
would like to thank the United
States’ authorities involved in this
difficult process for their close cooperation with my services that
deal with wartime losses at the
Ministry of Culture and National
Heritage. It is our common success.” said during the ceremony
Poland’s Minister of Culture and
National Heritage Bogdan
Zdrojewski.
The oil-on-copper painting, “St.
Philip Baptizing the Servant of
Queen Kandake”, portrays an
episode from the Acts of the
Apostles, the fifth book of the New
Testament. It is the work of a wellknown 18c. German painter, working, among others, as the court
painter in Darmstadt. The painting
came from the collection of Piotr
Fiorentini, a Polish officer, official
and collector. The work of art
remained at the National Museum
in Warsaw until the outbreak of the
Second World War. The wartime
fate of the Seekatz painting is still
unknown. One may only assume

“The Politics of Envy”
by Dr. Joseph Horton
I was excited when I learned that the parents of a student I knew produced a product my family used and enjoyed. His response to me was “Yea,
they’re getting rich off you.” He was quite confused when I replied “They
should be. They make a very good product. If they are not getting rich, they
are not good business people.” The student expected me to be envious of his
parents’ success rather than thankful for the product that met my family’s
needs better than anything else.
In a free society, people get rich by providing goods and services people
want at prices they are willing to pay. Yes, there are people like the founders
of Solyndra who game the system and get rich from government favors.
Still, most people who become rich do so by serving others, whether it be
designing new computers or running a carpet installation business.
President Obama has made the reduction of income inequality a key
focus of his second term. Our president is promoting the politics of envy.
We are told that some people have more than their fair share, and that only
the government can make things more fair by taxing and regulating the successful. The losses of the rich are supposed to make the rest of us happier
and better off.
Since the president was inaugurated, middle-class incomes have fallen
when adjusted for inflation. Five years of the Obama presidency with tens
of thousands of new regulations and hundreds of billions of dollars of stimulus spending and tax increases on the wealthy have not helped middleincome families.
This is not surprising. Remember President Clinton’s luxury tax? It was
supposed to affect only the rich who bought things like yachts. The people
who built yachts lost their jobs when the rich stopped buying luxuries.
President Clinton was humble enough to allow the luxury tax to be
repealed. Our current president is doubling down on more of what has
failed and is prepared to use constitutionally dubious methods, circumventing the legislative branch, to do so.
We do not need new savings accounts created by executive fiat so middle-income people can loan more money to the government. Savings Bonds
already exist. We need more wealth creation. Contrary to what many pundits claim, wealth is good. Wealth is fresh fruits and vegetables in January,
indoor plumbing, and MRI machines.
Neither will raising the minimum wage improve the lot of those who earn
it. People can only be paid what their labor is worth for a particular job in
the current economy. Raising the minimum wage will increase automation,
eliminating low-level jobs. Claiming otherwise for political support simply
takes advantage of people while pretending to help.
It is not by chance that the United States is a wealthy country. Yes, the
government was involved in such things as building roads which have
helped business. However, government does not have any resources of its
own. Roads were built because productive people paid taxes to pay for
them. We have become a wealthy country because for most of our history
we have had relatively low taxes (when rates were high there were huge
loopholes), limited regulation, the rule of law, and relatively little corruption.
No one is arguing that there should be no government, or that no tax revenue should be collected. Limited government, however, provides the freedom for entrepreneurs to provide solutions to people’s problems and
improve their lives. If our elected officials would in humility stop trying to
engineer fairness, step back and let Americans create wealth, the middle
class could thrive again.
President Obama is encouraging us to compare ourselves to those who

We Should Be Alarmed At
Obama Administration’s
Disregard For Our
Constitution
Dear Editor:
This letter is in response to
Richard Hunter’s letter “You are
entitled to your opinion but not
your facts” (Jan. 29th Post Eagle). I
am not sure if Richard Hunter is the
Professor in Seton Hall, a man that
I admire, but I disagree with his
take on Pat Grzywacz’s “History
Lesson”. I do not see any problems
with Grzywacz’s facts, but I disagree with some of his interpretations of cause and effect.
I strongly disagree with Richard
Hunter’s defense of current political
trends and Presidential abuse of
power as necessary for “common
good” that supposedly the government provides. First of all, common
good is a slogan that has been used
to justify the unjustifiable such as
Obamacare. What possible common good is there in imposing
Obamacare on us? That kind of
“common good” is always at the
expense of individual rights guaranteed under the Constitution. It has
also been the basis of unabashed
Judicial Activism of the last 60
years. The current Radical Left,
which took control of the
Democratic Party, has no concern
for “common good”. What they
want is to replace our social and
political system by their yet undefined utopia.
As for Social Security and
Medicare, whose need is recognized by most of us, they are in danger because of the Democratic
Party radical agenda which is pursued by Obama. Criticizing the
Democrats for what they have done
to these programs is not the same as
opposing them. After the Reagan
reforms which put the two programs on sound fiscal basis, the
Democrats quickly looted the Trust
Funds as soon as the debts were
paid off. Today, the Federal
Treasury owes SS over $2.5 trillion
dollars, which they have no intention of repaying. Medicare is on life
support, not only because of looting
but also because it is structured as a
“pay as you go” program instead of
a pension plan. More than 2/3 of an
individual’s expenditures on health
care are in the last 10-15 years of
life. Under Obamacare, Medicare
funds will be further depleted to
pay for those dubious benefits of
Obamacare.
I don’t know how many people
have noticed that those two safety
net programs have been lumped
with some 50 welfare programs
under
the
heading
of
“Entitlements”. I believe that it is
part of the strategy of the
Democratic Party to eliminate those
two as programs which are separately funded by a payroll tax, and
DISCLAIMER: THE VIEWS AND OPINIONS

merge them with all the welfare programs, funded by general revenues,
into one huge government program.
Of course, the payroll taxes will be
left in place. Some twenty years ago
the New Republic, a Democratic
Party policy magazine, devoted a
whole issue to that notion and
argued that the time has come to
implement it.
As for aid to education by the
Federal Government, it has done
more harm than good and should be
eliminated. Invariably it sticks the
states with most of the cost for programs of questionable value. The
Core Curriculum is the latest gratuitous Federal intrusion into elementary education and has the potential
to further damage an already faltering system. It has to be stopped.
Elementary education is the
province of the States under the
Amendment X of our Constitution
and Federal Gov. should stay out of
it.

THE POST EAGLE
Poland’s Eastern Border Is Still Open To Invasion
By John Czop
As this article goes to press, revolutionary crowds in the western
Ukraine are asserting their independence from Kiev, Ukraine's
capital. Western Ukrainian revolutionists seized the regional government buildings in Lviv and IvanoFrankivsk. Both these cities have
long histories as Polish fortresses.
Today they may become strongholds of an independent Western
Ukrainian republic.
The independentist insurgents
have armed themselves with heavy
automatic weapons which they
captured from several dozen police
stations in the western Ukraine. In
Ternopil, approximately 100 miles
east of Lviv, autonomists burned
down police headquarters. This
sets the stage for some parts of the
western Ukraine to secede from
Ukraine.
Samuel P. Huntington, an influential American political scientist,
best known for his scholarly article
of 1993 which he subsequently
expanded into his book of 1996,
THE CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS AND THE REMAKING
OF WORLD ORDER, persuasively
identified Ukraine as a cleft country, or a country composed of two
civilizations, while most countries
are of one civilization.
Huntington sees civilizations as
defined by religion and identifies
seven world civilizations: Western

(Latin Christendom), Orthodox
Christian, Islam, Sinic (Chinese),
Japanese, Hindu, and Latin
American, with sub-Saharan Africa
based on animism, the belief that
supernatural forces reside in animals and objects, as a possible
eighth. For Huntington, Ukraine is
the world's most important cleft
country, divided approximately
into two nearly equal parts along
the Dnieper River, which flows
through Kiev, and separates the
western Ukraine which is part of
Latin Western Christendom from
the Orthodox eastern Ukraine.
Population, agricultural, and industrial production and natural
resources make Ukraine very
important according to Huntington,
and without Ukraine in its orbit,
Russian power is much diminished.
Moreover, the Ukrainian language prevails in the western
Ukraine, while most speak Russian
in the eastern Ukraine. The word
ukraine means frontier: that is the
land on either side of a border. In
this case the border was between
the
PolishLithuanian
Commonwealth, or, Res Publica,
and Muscovy, the Rus principality
favored by the Mongols who conquered Rus in the Thirteenth
Century. The Mongols gave preferential treatment to the
Muscovites because they collected
taxes for the Mongol overlords
from other Rus principalities. The
Muscovites emerged as the
strongest of the Rus principalities
because they were the most brutal
and oppressive. By contrast, the
culturally Polish Res Publica guaranteed the individual rights of the
political nation, that is approximately 15% of the population, and
limited the sphere of governmental
action. The western Ukraine benefited from this liberty loving tradition rather than Muscovite authoritarianism.
What might happen if Ukraine's
President Viktor Yanukovich
decides to use armed force to
reassert his authority over areas in
western Ukraine controlled by
independentists? The first consequence of this policy would be a
refugee situation along western
Ukraine's border with Poland.
How would this affect Poland?
In November 2005, Professor
Zbigniew Brzezinski accosted this
kind of question in his keynote lecture at Columbia University's symposium on "Polish Foreign Policy
from Piast Times to the Present".
He wondered what the reaction of
Poland's NATO allies might be if a
crackdown against insurgent
democrats demanding their rights

Getting Your Children Involved In Saving For College

Most articles about college planning focus on advice for parents or

Most articles about college planning focus on advice for parents or other
adults who expect to pay the cost for a younger person's education. But
what about the beneficiary who plans to attend college?
Although most young people don't have the assets for college savings
that their elders do, being part of the planning process can be educational,
offering financial lessons for the future. Children can earn money, learn
about sources of financial aid, research potential colleges, and take other
steps that may relieve their parents of some of the responsibility of college
planning. In addition, some experts believe that if children are actively
involved in planning for their future, they may be more committed when
entering college and ultimately have a more successful experience than they
would have otherwise.
Starting Early
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the best time to introduce
children to college planning is when they are in the sixth, seventh, or eighth
grade. You may want to initiate discussions about college and explain the
importance of developing good study habits and getting involved in
extracurricular activities -- to instill the idea that your family supports higher education.
You may also want to encourage your children to begin thinking about the
career they would like to pursue, which is likely to influence their choice of
college, as well as to establish a savings account that could be earmarked
for education expenses. In addition, you can teach basic lessons about compounding, investing, and other money management issues.
When students are in the latter part of middle school, they can also start
planning to make the most of high school experiences with an eye toward
college. Remind your budding scholar that success in high school depends
on skills and attitudes that are developed in middle school or earlier. For
example, time management skills developed in middle school may eventually help a high school student manage schoolwork, a job, sports, and other
interests. And when the time comes to pick classes for the first year of high
school, a good mix of college prep courses may be important.
in math, science, language arts, social studies, and other areas of interest, as
well as postsecondary courses of study in these areas.
Maintaining high academic standards -- Colleges prefer applicants that
have exceeded basic requirements and taken more challenging courses in
language arts, math, science, social studies, foreign languages, and other
areas. Many high schools permit qualified students to earn college credits by
taking Advanced Placement courses. Excelling in these classes may demonstrate motivation and reduce the number of academic requirements after a
student enters college.
Learning about college costs -- Students may gain a deeper appreciation of
their family's financial sacrifices when they realize how expensive college
is. They can learn about college costs from the College Board at
www.collegeboard.com, the U.S. Department of Education at www.ed.gov,
and high school guidance offices.
Researching scholarships - There are numerous Web sites with information
about sources of financial aid. For example, www.fastweb.com and
www.finaid.org contain search engines with data about thousands of scholarships with varying eligibility criteria. In addition, www.fafsa.ed.gov provides an overview of federal student aid programs, including Pell Grants,
campus-based aid programs, Stafford Loans, PLUS Loans, and others. Also,
local libraries and high school guidance offices may have information about
state-sponsored aid programs and scholarships sponsored by local organizations.
Earning money -- High school students can set aside a portion of their
wages from part-time or summer jobs for higher education expenses. Also,
students may be able to obtain jobs that build on career interests as a way of
solidifying their future plans.
Getting organized -- College planning encompasses numerous details,
including visiting institutions that a student may want to attend, applying for
financial aid, obtaining transcripts and letters of recommendation, and meeting deadlines. A high school student can take responsibility for making sure
that important matters are tended to ahead of time. For example, if a student
has a school vacation coming up, he or she could help organize a family trip
to visit colleges of interest or spend some time completing college applications.
You and your prospective student may be able to think of more ideas that
could add value to your family's efforts to save for a college education.
Getting your budding scholar involved in the process -- financially and otherwise -- could ultimately be a pivotal lesson in responsibility that impacts
his or her later success in life.
this age can be encouraged to maintain good grades, enhance computer
skills, and think about potential
careers.
3. High school students can
explore college planning at a deeper
level, including using the Internet to
research college costs and sources
of financial aid. Websites such as
w w w . e d . g o v ,
w w w. c o l l e g e b o a r d . c o m ,
www.fastweb.com, www.finaid.org,
and www.fafsa.ed.gov provide considerable information in these areas.
4. Since attending and financing
college requires planning and attention to detail, high school students
can help their parents develop a plan
to make sure things get done on
time. For example, the plan could
encompass visiting prospective colleges, completing applications and
other paperwork, applying for financial aid, and other tasks.
5. Parents and students can work
together to develop a budget for college expenses. Average costs for
various types of two-year and fouryear colleges are available at
www.collegeboard.com.

THE POST EAGLE
The Future of the Polish-American Strategic Relationship
Following Secretary Chuck
Hagel’s visit in Poland Jan. 30, the
GMF office in Warsaw organized a
debate on the Future of the PolishAmerican strategic relationship.
The U.S. Ambassador Stephen Mull
was confronted by world affairs
journalist and publicist Bartosz
Węglarczyk, in a conversation
moderated by Michał Baranowski.
This timely event attracted a crowd
of over 80 people and provoked a
heated debate between government
officials, policy community leaders
and experts.
According to Ambassador Mull,
the reason for Secretary Hagel’s
visit was to thank Poland for its
engagement in Afghanistan as well
as to congratulate on increased
defense spending and military modernization process in Poland, strategically significant for NATO
because of interoperability. Broadly
speaking, the visit took place
because of the general satisfaction
with the state of Polish-American
relationship and its potential to
grow. Hagel’s visit also provided
reassurance that the U.S. remains
fully committed to building the
European
Phased
Adaptive
Approach, contrary to the belief that
development in Iran might have
weakened its interest in the initiative.
Bartosz Weglarczyk, who spent 6
years in Washington, held a more
pessimistic opinion on this transatlantic relationship. He remarked that
not only are there constant talks of
the U.S. pivot towards Asia, but also
that a Polish pivot away from the
U.S. is observable, caused mainly
by the lack of U.S. public diplomacy in Poland. Recent scandals such
as the secret CIA prisons in Poland,
or the Snowden affair which undermine the opinion of the U.S. government and its intelligence services

are pulling the Polish government
away too. What also deepens this
lack of trust is the uncertainty with
regards to U.S. strategic aims
towards Central Europe or the
Middle East.
In response, Ambassador Mull
explained that there is a vast talk of
cooperation that is taking place
behind closed doors. With military
operations winding down, the U.S.
intends to cultivate partnerships and
maintain alliances and one way forward is cooperation on cybersecurity. Resources will be rechanneled in
places which did not receive enough
attention because of other priorities
and the U.S. will be intensifying
relations Poland would be ready to
make. He reassured that the U.S.
will continue to cover the majority
of NATO’s resources, so fears of
disengagement, also expressed from
the audience, will remain unsupported. Bartosz Weglarczyk actually
remarked that U.S. leadership in
NATO is strongly desired. Given the
lack of common EU security policy,
the EU would follow NATO’s
vision.
Regarding the situation in
Ukraine,
Ambassador
Mull
expressed deep concern, and asserted that the U.S. and Poland are in
full agreement on the subject and
share the same views about potential
sanctions. Current action should
involve working together to provide
humanitarian assistance as needed,
as we wait to see how the situation
unfolds. Mr. Węglarczyk agreed
that there is nothing more that can
be done immediately.
As the conversation was coming
to a close, Ambassador of Romania
inquired about the possibility of
NATO cooperating with states on
the eastern border of the EU.

2013, more than 3.3 million families and individuals visited a VITA
location, which are generally located at community and neighborhood
centers, libraries, schools, shopping
malls and other convenient locations, for tax assistance including
information about special tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax
Credit, Child Tax Credit and Credit

“The VITA program is an excellent resource for low- and mediumincome families to receive information and assistance in filing their
taxes,” said NLC President Chris
Coleman, Mayor of Saint Paul,
Minn. “The program exemplifies
the shared commitment of the
National League of Cities and
National Community Tax Coalition
to raise awareness about resources
that empower families to achieve
economic success.”
In addition to VITA sites
throughout the state, online help is
available
through

On that website, individuals or families making a combined income of
$58,000 or less can complete their
tax returns on their own in a few
simple steps at no cost.
“The online self-preparation
option allows individuals to prepare
their own return from wherever
they choose and comes with built in
lifelines by clicking a button to chat
with a certified volunteer or calling
the helpline for assistance,” said
Jackie Lynn Coleman, NCTC
President and CEO. “This saves
hardworking Americans invaluable
time and money that can be invested into their families.”
Bus ads will be displayed on
buses servicing targeted routes in
New Jersey, and feature a quote
from U.S. Senator Cory A. Booker
telling riders, “By saving on tax

Booker will play statewide encouraging eligible residents to visit a
VITA site where they can also
receive financial coaching and
healthcare application assistance.
The program also encourages
community participation and provides training for individuals who
want to become a “Tax Volunteer.”
In 2013, nearly 92,000 volunteers
participated in the program. For

State of Illinois Will Honor General Pulaski New Polonia and Old Polonia Working Together
CHICAGO, IL -- The public is
invited to celebrate Pulaski Day on
Monday, March 3, 2014, at 10 a.m.
in the Sabina P. Logisz Great Hall
of The Polish Museum of America
(PMA), 984 N. Milwaukee Avenue,
Chicago, Illinois. The presence of
distinguished leaders of national,
state, county, and city government
is anticipated, as well as leaders of
Polonia. A short program of speakers will take place, concluding with
an official wreath laying ceremony
at the painting, Pulaski at
Savannah, by Stefan Batowski.
Admission is free.
General Kazimierz (Casimir)

6, 1745
d. near Savannah,
Georgia, October 9-10, 1779) is
recognized as the Father of the
American Cavalry.

Schnepf expressed also his personal
gratitude to the former Deputy
Consul General of Poland in New

engagement in the case.
It was only in 2011 that it was
possible to establish, in cooperation
with U.S. Immigration Customs
and Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland
Security Investigations (HSI), that
the Seekatz painting was put up for
sale in one of the New York auction
houses in 2011 and was subsequently purchased by an art gallery in
London. Returning the painting
from London to New York, and at
the same time allowing the transfer
of the work to Poland, was a result
of a complex legal and administrative process and months of cooperation between the Embassy of
Poland in Washington, DC and federal

of America, stated Pulaski in a letter to the Congress. Even before he
was officially commissioned by
Congress, Pulaski joined the
American Army as a volunteer. At
Brandywine, in 1777, he greatly distinguished himself by leading a daring attack against the British, thereby saving the retreating American
Army.
At the insistence of General
George Washington, Pulaski was
made a Brigadier General and the
first Commander of the American
Cavalry. He established the Pulaski
Legion, a corps of Frenchmen,
German Hessians, and Poles, who
were instrumental in saving the City
of Charleston, South Carolina, from
British occupation in 1779. In
October of 1779, at the age of 34,
General Pulaski paid the ultimate
price for freedom: he died from
mortal wounds received while leading a cavalry charge in Savannah,
Georgia. The General s mortal
remains were ceremoniously reinterred at the Pulaski Monument at
Monterrey Square in Savannah, GA
in October of 2005. Posthumous
honorary US citizenship was granted to General Pulaski in 2009.

Heidi Kopala & Tom Kazalski Honored
By John Czop
NEW JERSEY - On 12 January
2014 at the Polish Cultural
Foundation in Clark, New Jersey,
the Polish American CongressNew Jersey Division (PAC-NJD)
held their annual Opłatek. At the
Opłatek, Dr. Stanislaw Sliwowski,
president of the PAC-NJD, named
two outstanding Polish Americans
as the 2013 recipients of this division's Annual Recognition Award
for their outstanding contributions
to the Polish American Community:
Mrs. Heidi Jadwiga Kopala and
Mr. Tom Kazalski.
The Vice President for American
Affairs of the PAC-NJD, Mrs.
Dorothy Sowchuk, who also is
president of the Polish American
Heritage League - sponsors of the
annual Polish Heritage Festival,
that takes place on the second
Sunday in June at the PNC Bank
Center in Holmdel, New Jersey,
introduced Mrs. Kopala. A longtime
serving member of both the Polish
American Heritage League and the
General Pulaski Memorial Parade
Committee, Mrs. Kopala, over the
past 14 years has held the position
of Account Auditor in the Parish
Internal Audit Department of the
Roman Catholic Archdiocese of
Newark. She is active in the parish
life of Saint Stanislas Church in
Newark. With her beautiful flower
arrangements, Jadzia enlivened the
Polish Cultural Center in Clark
when she served on the Social
Committee and helped to prepare
ad journals for special events.
The seventh and youngest child
of
Czesława
and
Antoni
Gabryszewski, the young Jadwiga
grew up in Ląkie, Poland, a village
surrounded by beautiful lakes in the
environs of Skępe, a small city near
Torun. She learned at home to be
HEIDI JADWIGA KOPALA
AND TOM KAZALSKI
ever mindful of the needs of others
and did charity work as a youngster.
After completing her education in
Torun, Jadwiga emigrated to
America and added “Heidi” as her
first name upon becoming an
American citizen. She settled in
Irvington and married Stanley
Kopala. They are the proud parents
of two sons, Adam and David, who
recently earned university degrees.
Jadzia and Stanley now live in New
Providence and recently became
grandparents after the birth of their
beautiful granddaughter, Ela Sofia.
When this writer asked Jadzia
what propels her exceptional record
of activity on behalf of Polonia, she
observed that: while embracing the
United States of America as her
adopted country, she continues to
value her Polish heritage, and as
time goes by, she has become
increasingly aware of the strength of
the Christian and democratic values
which Poles and Americans share.
Left to right: Mr. Maurycy Leszkiewicz, national director PAC-NJD,

This is why it is important for her to
work to improve both people-topeople and state-to-state relations
between America and Poland, the
two peoples and countries she loves.
Mr. Thomas J. Kazalski is a
model example of the Old Polonia.
His father's side of the family has
been in the United States for four
generations and emigrated from the
environs of Warsaw, while his mother's side of the family has been here
for three generations. Tom grew up
in “Polish” Irvington and earned
degrees in chemical engineering
from the then Newark College of
Engineering, now New Jersey
Institute of Technology, and an
MBA Degree. He is a successful
manufacturer's representative for
water purification and waste treatment systems. Thanks to Tom's
expert advice and action, our environment is healthier and safer.
This writer has served on the
Polish Heritage Festival Committee
since 2011, and admires Tom's highly developed skills in critical thinking and his fair, firm, and friendly
management style. He is the long
serving treasurer of the Polish
American Heritage League, the
organization that sponsors the annual Polish Heritage Festival, which
will take place this year on June 8.
This year Tom is in charge of the
Festival's main Plaza Show, ad journal, and raffle. Like Heidi, Tom also
is a longtime serving member of the
standing committee, the General
Casimir Pułaski Memorial Parade
Committee that produces the annual
Pułaski Day Parade in New York
City every year. This year the
parade will take place on Sunday,
October 5.
When I asked Tom for his views
on how the Old Polonia and the
New Polonia might work together
more productively, he registered his
skepticism about the soundness of
my question and responded that
those who do volunteer committee
work for Polonia need to observe
transparency in money matters and
follow the principles of democratic
corporate governance and reciprocity toward our benefactors. Tom is
justifiably proud of the fact that the
General Pułaski Memorial Parade
Committee is the ONLY sponsoring
organization of the Polish and
Slavic Federal Credit Union
(PSFCU) that shows reciprocity for
the credit union's collection and
transfer of dues to the parade committee by maintaining a good checking account with the PSFCU and
paying all of its bills with checks
drawn on that account. This keeps
Polish money in the Polish community.
Heidi and Tom well merit praise
for the hard volunteer work that they
do for Polonia.

Visiting Some of Poland’s Treasures With Euro Pilgrimage Tours
Erika Piotrowski, 21-year-old
daughter of “Pan” Franek, and
member of the famous band, “Pan”
Franek, Zosia and the Polka
Towners, invites anyone interested
in visiting some of the most famous
tourist attractions in Poland, to join
her for a sightseeing pilgrimage
tour this May 23-June 3, 2014.
Recently, Erika has become an
international tour guide, leading
groups to Poland and to St. Anne’s
Shrine in Canada. Her future plans
will include other worldwide destinations as she begins her new
career. She has travelled herself to
Calcutta, India on a mission trip,
where she received her calling to
explore and learn cultures of other
countries.
Probably the most exciting place
this upcoming Poland tour will take
one will be to Wadowice, Poland,
the birthplace of Karol Wojtyla,
more popularly known as Pope
John Paul II. By the time of the
tour, he will have been named to
sainthood in the Roman Catholic
Church
by
Pope
Francis.
Wadowice is a city located in southern Poland, about 30 miles from
Krakow (another tour destination).
This city dates back to the late 10th
century. It was destroyed by fire in
the early 15th century, but, was
rebuilt.
Karol Wojtyla was born in 1920
in Wadowice. Later he would be
named the bishop of Krakow and
the Pope of the Roman Catholic
Church. Between 1941 and 1943
almost the whole Jewish population
(more than 2,000) was exterminated
under the direction of Nazi
Germany. Mostly this took place in
the
nearby
Auschwitz
Concentration Camp. Auschwitz is
another destination on this tour.
After the peaceful transformation
of the political and economic system in Poland in the late 20th century, most of the town went bankrupt because the industries died.
However, because of the popularity
of Pope John Paul II, and
Wadowice’s fame as his birthplace,
tourism began to grow there. Karol
Wojtyla’s home was made into a
museum. His high school still
stands. One can also visit the
church where he attended Mass,
served as an altar boy, was baptized
and confirmed. These days more
than a quarter of a million people
visit this city every year.
A cultural festival is held every
year from May 18th until the beginning of June to commemorate the
birth of Karol Wojtyla. The pilgrimage group will be there to
experience the excitement of this
festival on this the year of his canonization.
Another highpoint of this pilgrimage tour with Erika is a visit to
By Don Haderle
Southwest Polka Party
In Las Vegas
Wieliczka, where folks will visit the
largest mining museum in the
world. There one can view equipment and mining technologies from
as old as the Middle Ages. These
mines were worked from the 13th
to the 20th century.
Visitors will go underground to
as deep as 135 meters (442 feet).
They will walk through mines
including numerous tunnels, chambers, see underground lakes, caves,
and salt sculptures lining the tunnels. They will also see the highlight of the tour, the Chapel of the
St. Kinga, which is a place of worship carved from salt rock.
The salt mines are quite something to see. People come from all
over the world to view these mines.
The mines were still producing salt
until 2007. They have been renovated somewhat to make them into
the fine salt mining museum that
they are today.
A pilgrimage to Poland would
not be complete without a visit to
Czestochowa, a city of 240,000
inhabitants established in the 11th
century. Czestochowa is located in
south Poland on the Warta River.
The city is famous for the Pauline
Monastery which houses the Black
Madonna painting and a shrine to
the Virgin Mary.
Several legends accompany the
painting of the Black Madonna.
One is that the presence of the holy
painting saved its church from
being destroyed in a fire, but not
before the flames darkened the
fleshtone pigments, thus giving her
the name Black Madonna. The legend concerning the two scars on the
Black Madonna's right cheek is that
the Hussites stormed the monastery
in 1430, stealing from the sanctuary. Among the items stolen was the
painting. After putting it in their
wagon, the Hussites tried to get
away but their horses refused to
move. They threw the portrait down
to the ground and one of the thieves
drew his sword and struck the
image and made two deep scrapes.
When the robber tried to inflict a
third strike, he fell to the ground
and writhed in pain until his death.

Despite past attempts to repair these
scars, they had difficulty in covering up those slashes.
Whatever one believes, the painting is surrounded with mystery and
wonder and is a delight to gaze
upon, and Czestochowa offers an
amazing place of pilgrimage and
prayer. As I mentioned previously,
not too far from here, a visit to
Auschwitz is also on the docket for
the travelers.
Anyone who is at all familiar
with the atrocities of the German
occupation of Poland and other
European countries during World
War II knows that the most notorious of concentration camps is
Auschwitz in Poland. There 1.1
million Jews and Catholics were
killed at the hands of twisted-minded German soldiers. This sad
memorial death camp offers a tour
to remind the world of what really
happened in those years of torture,
hard labor and death to men,
women and children that did not fit
Hitler’s idea of the “perfect race.”
Although this tour is tear-jerking, it
is an eye-opening view into world
history of just seventy years ago.
Besides the aforementioned
places, your tour/pilgrimage will
include a fun-filled raft trip down
the Dunajec River in Szczawnica, a
tour of Warsaw, a visit to the
Sanctuary of Divine Mercy, where
Sister Faustina Kowalska was given
the Divine Mercy Chaplet, a visit to
the Wawel Castle in Krakow,
Poland that was the seat of Polish
kings, time spent in the Main
Market Square, the gothic Church
of St. Mary’s, a side trip to
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima in
Krzeptowki, where Pope John Paul
II gave thanksgiving for his life
after his assassination attempt in
1981, a stop at Niepokalanow
Sanctuary, former home to St.
Maximilian Kolbe, 21st century
martyr of Auschwitz, and a couple
more interesting spots on the agenda.
If you would like more information on this exciting and amazing
tour please contact
Erika Piotrowski at 231-720-8378,
or e-mail her at
erikapeuro@hotmail.com.
The cost for this twelve-day tour is
$3,850 per person, including round
trip air from Chicago, based on
double occupancy. Come and experience Poland like never before!

The 23rd annual Southwest Polka Party was held
in Las Vegas at the Orleans Hotel Casino February 1113. Bands played in two ballrooms. The Mardi Gras
Ballroom is the larger of the two with capacity for over 800 people offering
a Master dance floor. Ray Sands, Julie Lee, and the Softones rotated from
1pm to 10pm Tuesday and Wednesday with a shorter program on Thursday.
The Esplanade Ballroom holds several hundred people. The Alaska Polka
Chips and Barefoot Becky rotated on the program with a jam session setup
from 5-7 pm Tuesday and Wednesday.
Our buddy, Roman Possedi, emceed the event. Roman was Mr. Chicago
in Cleveland-style polka music for six decades. He has resided in Las Vegas
for over a decade and does a masterful job introducing the talent.
Ed & Lois Halvorsen, who originated the Southwest Polka Party, retired
and handed it off to Julie Lee who kept the same format mixing in a few
new bands and promises to keep it fresh with some new bands each year.
Julie did a great job organizing the event and performing. The polka music
was soft tempo with a lot of two-steps, an occasional circle Schottisch, and
other mixers which the crowd loves. The dance floors were well occupied
without being crowded.
It’s aptly called a party. We see people from across the country that we
haven’t seen since the party the prior year. It’s as much a time to socialize
as it is to dance. The party flows out of the venue into hotel rooms. A few
doors down the hall from us a group was having a champagne breakfast
party on Wednesday. We (Mary Saber, Phyllis Seibert, Gail, & I) had a jampacked room party on Wednesday where Pete Dundas, Danny Fitterer, and
Potsy Jenovic played heart throbbing Slovenian music. It’s a happening –
music, dance, dine, gamble, and gambol!

The Ablemen To Stop Performances Vinton In Florida!
As Of December 31, 2014
By Ray Skorka
After much deliberation, I am
announcing that this current year,
2014, will be the final year of bookings for The Ablemen. I am proud
to say that the band is performing in
its 51st year, but after all the bookings, traveling, and time away from
home, it is time to say “so long” to
a musical career that has been
extremely good to me.
I began performing with my first
band, The Ray Dels, in 1963 at
weddings and private parties. We
added performances in lounges and
clubs to our schedule during the
1970’s. Having grown up on polka
music by the Connecticut Twins,
Frank
Wojnarowski,
Frank
Gutowski, and Bernie Witkowski, I
always had a desire to perform in
the polka field. So, in the mid1980’s, we broke ground in that
arena. The Ablemen have continued
performing a variety of musical
genres ever since.
To dispel any doubts or rumors,
there are no physical or health
issues that factor into this decision;
it is simply the right time. I am
looking forward to attending events
that I have had to miss during the
past seven decades due to our performance schedule.
I have been fortunate to perform
currently with loyal, talented musicians who are friends: Jim Obrotka
on drums and vocals for 49 years:
RAY SKORKA
Joe Annecchino on saxes, clarinet,
flute, and trumpet for 30 years; and
Bill Miranda on trumpet, flugelhorn,
and vocals for 26 years. I also wish
to express my gratitude to others
who have accompanied me for periods of time on this musical odyssey:
my original band mates Eddie
“Skippy” Freed and Ronnie Teddick
on drums and guitar; Tom Obrotka
on sax and clarinet; Bill
Wojciechowski on guitar, trumpet,
and vocals; Rich Robino on saxophones, clarinet, flute, and keyboards; John Grant on trumpet,
flugelhorn, and guitar; and Jim
Jordan on trumpet and flugelhorn.
Thanks, too, to the female vocalists
who worked with us at wedding
receptions during the 1980’s and
early 1990’s: Maggie McCarthy,
Dale Cafarro, Lynn Iossa, Audrey
Shane, and Patty Varian.
I also want to acknowledge my
late parents for their dedication to
my music lessons on the accordion
and piano. A debt of gratitude goes
to my music teachers, in order, on
accordion: June Dee Stark, Ray
DeBrown, Freddie Yarosz, and
Stephen Harer; on piano – John
Mayurnik.
I am proud of the band’s achievements throughout the years, including winning the first place trophy
and being acclaimed the Gold
Medal Band at the National Polka
Festival at Hunter Mountain for
three consecutive years in the
1980’s. The Ablemen performed for
several years on Fifth Avenue in
New York City at the Reviewing
Stand for the annual October
Pulaski Day Parade and played on
floats for various organizations in
that same parade during the 1990’s.
In addition, we performed during
the 2000’s at both Shea Stadium and
Citi Field for the NY Mets annual
Polish-American Heritage Nights.
The Ablemen also appeared on several polka TV shows on WVIA-TV
in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.
There are also great memories of
playing at many polka weekends,
festivals, and notable Polish halls –
all too numerous to mention.
A special acknowledgement goes
to all the DJ’s and IJ’s who have
played our recordings on their

Care for a polka band and you care
about their families and you
become aware of the love and sacrifice on everyone’s part. It’s hard

everyone knew that.
What is it that we remember

everyone who knows him very well

WORD ETYMOLOGY
Stories of words having a Latin or Greek origin.
There are over a million words in the English
language. 60% of them come from Latin and Greek.
The following story(s) will help you to understand
and retain the meanings.
By Joseph Stefaniak, an envoy of the Classics.
The words for today are legal terms. SUBPOENA as we all
know is an order to appear in court or to supply documents to the
court. It comes from the Latin - SUB - meaning UNDER, and
POENA - meaning PENALTY. If one does not comply there can
be a penalty imposed. In ancient Roman times the penalty was
usually a fine. Roman penalties for crimes varied from torture or
crucifixion to exile. A gruesome punishment for parricide (killing
of a father, mother or kin) was to place the guilty in a tied sack
with a dog, a viper and a rooster and throw the sack into the Tiber
river.
The word - POSSE - which we know from the many western
movies we have seen is defined as a committee organized by a
sheriff to aid in law enforcement . It comes from the Latin words POSSE COMITATUS- which means POWER GIVEN TO A
BODY OF MEN. The Latin word - POSSUM , POSSE, POTUI means TO BE ABLE. The Latin word - COMITATUS - means
AN ASSEMBLY, A CONVENTION, A COUNTY. In medieval
times groups such as these were permitted by the king. The words
- POTENTIAL and POTENCY- meaning POWER or ABILITY
- are also derived from the Latin word - POSSE.

POLAND’S
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3)
in Belarus led to an invasion of
Poland masked by a refugee situation along Poland's border with
Belarus. At first, it might appear
unclear, because of the confused
situation created by refugees trying
to seek safety by crossing into
Poland, that Poland actually was
being invaded.
That is why Brzezinski encouraged the Truth and Justice Party
government, led by the Kaczynski
brothers, that won the elections in
October 2005, promptly to set up
an independent defensive force
outside of NATO to defend
Poland's territory for two-to-three
weeks until public opinion in the
NATO countries concluded that
Poland, in fact, had been invaded.
National sovereignty, Brzezinski
reminded his auditors, requires
national self-defense.
How has the situation changed
since Brzezinski delivered his lecture at Columbia in 2005? Poland's
border is still open to invasion
from the east. It is an open border
to the east just as it was when

Poland was a member of the
Warsaw Pact and occupied by the
Soviet army.
The early November 2013
NATO war games, Operation
Steadfast Jazz, demonstrated that
the United States, as leading NATO
power, was not willing to show its
political will to project armed force
into the Baltic and northeastern
Poland. Collective security and
alliances are fine, but Poland needs
to meet the contingency of a
Russian attack, the theme of
Russian war games in that region
since 2009. Poland's leaders should
have, but did not, set up the independent defense force Brzezinski
called for over eight years ago, and
before the Russian invasion of
Georgia, which was a masked invasion. Readers recall that fashionable opinion in America and western Europe suspected that Georgia
started or provoked the Russian
invasion. As is their habit, the
Kremlin's propagandists conflated

victims with villains and this duped

No longer is there doubt that
Putin's Kremlin is intent on restoring the former Soviet empire in a
Muscovite guise. Poland and other
countries bordering Russia must
take responsibility for their own
defense. The only bright spot was
the decision announced in late
March 2011 by the Tusk
Government to move forward with
Poland's nuclear energy program,
the first step toward a nuclear arsenal for Poland. As momentum
builds in Polish public opinion for
an independent international investigation of the Smolensk Disaster
of 10 April 2010, the need for
Poland to have an independent
nuclear force becomes more
urgent.
