Position Statement on World Languages Standards-Based Teaching,
Learning and Assessment
--Colorado Content Collaborative in World Languages
The Colorado Academic Standards in World Languages call for a shift in language learning and assessment.
They are benchmarked with proficiency ranges rather than grade levels given the fact that students in our
state have different entry points into the learning of another language.
Our world languages standards are communicative and proficiency-based in nature, with culture embedded
throughout. In a standards-based World Language classroom:
Teachers
• use the target language at least 90% of the time.
• provide opportunities for learners to acquire language in meaningful, real-world contexts.
• use authentic sources to facilitate the understanding of cultural products, practices and perspectives.
Learners
• use the target language to perform real world tasks.
• demonstrate growth in their communicative proficiency through formative and summative performance
assessments.
• acquire higher levels of proficiency for college and career readiness in programs that start in elementary
school and allow for uninterrupted study through high school.
Appropriate learner assessments are performance-based and must be aligned with the three modes of
communication (interpretive--listening and reading; interpersonal--speaking and writing; and presentational-speaking and writing). They are focused on what learners can actually do with the language. Therefore,
discrete measurements of isolated skills, such as grammar points, vocabulary knowledge and cultural facts
are NOT ACCEPTABLE measures of student proficiency.
World Languages teachers acknowledge the value of the use of student growth measures in assessing
educator effectiveness. Effective implementation of a performance-based assessment process will provide
meaningful support for Colorado World Languages educators, their students and their schools.

Letter from the President February 2016 Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the CCFLT Board of Directors, we would like to welcome you to our 2016 Spring Conference with over 80 sessions for you to attend! Your CCFLT board is very excited to put on this incredible professional development and networking opportunity for you! We are delighted you are here and encourage you to have a great time learning and socializing with the greatest teachers on earth, language teachers! Our theme this year is “Keeping it Real.” Why keep it real? The use of realia helps to stimulate the brain and there is a lot of talk these days of authentic materials, brain research and comprehensible input. But, what does it all mean and how does all of it affect our students and us? This is the question that James Wooldridge, our keynote speaker will address. As you attend all the great sessions over the next couple of days, keep this question in your head and ask yourself how you can incorporate all these new authentic engaging materials and ideas into your classroom. This conference is where we come to become better teachers, that’s why you are here; to learn some new cool trick or how to advocate for yourself in the ever changing evaluation system. However, it’s also a time to network and meet other professionals as passionate as you are about teaching. Please plan to attend our receptions and luncheons and make the most of your networking possibilities. Keynote Speaker: “Embracing Inauthenticity” Saturday, February 20th, 2016 9:30 – 10:30 in the River Birch Ballroom ABOUT Señor Wooly JAMES WOOLDRIDGE (A.K.A. SEÑOR WOOLY) IS A SPANISH TEACHER FROM THE METRO CHICAGO REGION. Jim Wooldridge, a Spanish teacher in Evanston, IL (near Chicago) for nine years, used to struggle to find high‐quality educational materials for his middle school students. Most existing materials treated students as though they were in kindergarten, or took the opposite approach and treated them like humorless adults. While Wooldridge’s students were beginners, they weren’t babies, and didn’t want simplistic, babyish stuff. They were drawn in, like tweens and teens are, to funny, creative, and absurd stories with unexpected twists. So, Wooldridge decided to make those kinds of stories himself. In 2005, Wooldridge began writing his own music for his students. Although he had not even considered seeking a wider audience, it wasn’t long before other teachers found his first website, JamesWooldridge.com. He renamed the site Señor Wooly in 2009, when he released the music videos Billy la Bufanda and ¿Puedo ir al baño? Both were hits. Since then, he has created numerous well‐
known musical stories, such as Guapo, Las Excusas, and Sé Chévere, among many others. Although he is not currently teaching, Wooldridge keeps close ties with the local Spanish educational community, frequently casting Spanish students and teachers to perform in his productions. Jim Wooldridge lives in Skokie, IL with his wife and two children. 4
Teacher of the Year 2014 The Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers 2015‐2016 Teacher of the Year is Huiching Chen, Mandarin and French Teacher at Denver Public Schools.
“I have been inspired and motivated by her integrity and passion for second language learning.” –Barbara Vallejos, Abraham Lincoln High School I was born and raised in Taiwan. When I was in elementary school, I wanted to be a teacher because the teachers I had were like goddesses to me. They were caring, knowledgeable, and powerful because none of the students dared to disobey them! When I was in middle school, I wanted to be a police officer, a lawyer, a nurse, a singer, an artist, an actress… To be honest, I had no idea what I was going to do in the future. Luckily, “being a useful person” has become my life motto ever since my high school years. I graduated in 1993 with my Bachelor’s Degree in French from the National Central University in Taiwan. I then immigrated to the United States right after my graduation. In 1998, I graduated from University of Northern Colorado with a Master’s degree in Visual Arts and a teaching credential in French K‐12. I was hired in 2000 as ELA (English Language Acquisition) Language Arts teacher at Abraham Lincoln high School with Denver Public Schools. From 2000 to 2006, my main responsibility was to teach English as a second language to a group of students from other countries. Then I transferred to World Languages Department teaching Chinese and French. This is my 15th year there. I love what I am doing because being a World Language teacher I notonly can help my students in many aspects, but also am able to play many roles to fulfill my childhood dreams. 5

Thursday’s Session Schedule Two‐hour sessions from 5:00pm – 7:00pm T1: Movie Making with Señor Wooly Presenter: James Wooldridge Room: Big Thompson Creating videos is an increasingly accessible tool for storytelling, yet many teachers find it intimidating. Join Sr. Wooly as he demystifies low‐budget filmmaking. Jim Wooldridge starting making short films on his own time, using a cheap videocamera, and no training or budget. Although he later graduated to more complex projects, the simple tricks he used to make videos like ¿Puedo ir al baño? and Guapo can be achieved by any teacher. In this session, Wooldridge will teach practical tips for filmmaking that will drastically increase the quality of your videos. No, this is not film school, but it’s the closest you can get in a 2 hour session. No experience is necessary. However, you should come with a device for recording some practice shots. A smartphone is ideal. NOTE 1: This session is not about teaching you to make class‐wide video projects with your students. Rather, you will learn how to make short, low‐budget videos for your students. NOTE 2: Although Wooldridge will give recommendations on editing, this session will not teach you how to edit. T2 – Embedding Grammar, Vocabulary and Complex Thought Through Gestures Presenter: Rachel Gilbert Room: Carter Lake Teachers will learn about John Hattie's research as it relates to Gesturing. They will first get to experience the effectiveness through a language learning demonstration. They will then learn how to apply the research in a systematic way to ensure language acquisition. They will then have time to practice and workshop their new skills. T3: Content based learning for HL/LZ Mixed Classes: 10 Tips 10 Activities Presenter: Alergria Ribadeneria Room: Lake Loveland Come see why teaching language through content is an effective approach for developing proficiency for heritage and second language learners. The presenter will share 10 strategies and 10 activities that you can use to create a content course or unit about any subject. Currently many of our courses still rely heavily on grammar teaching, and when they turn to content the main subject is literature, which has a narrow appeal. This presentation will give you the tools to step out of your comfort zone and transform your teaching by daring to teach language through any interesting subject you and your students enjoy. You will see that if your goal is primarily linguistic, you don’t need to be an expert in the subject because the content is merely a pretext for language development. The presenter will share syllabi, assessments, projects, activities and scaffolding techniques for use with authentic materials. All have been used in non‐literature content courses, and can be adapted to any subject. 7

Presenter: Connie Navarro Room: Aspen Daisy After 20 years of classroom teaching, Connie took on the role of Peer Observer for World Languages in DPS. After 3 years of observing more than 100 teachers of French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese, she wants to share the top 10 high leverage instructional moves she has seen in classrooms. Topic: Learning Experience Language of Session: English Levels: All F2: Backward Planning to Make Any Reading Comprehensible Presenter: Karen Rowan Room: Elderberry Do you want to teach a song? A poem? A short story? A reader? A novel? Wondering how to quickly turn incomprehensible input into Comprehensible Input at ANY level? We will rip apart several materials and backward plan them into separate lessons to make them comprehensible. Whatever your "CAN DO" statements are, come to this hands‐on session to pre‐teach the vocabulary through TPR or Stories or Reader's Theater or Simplified "Training Wheel" readings or Q&A with your class. Teachers will also experiment with fun ways to provide informal assessments, useful to guiding instruction. “Engaging Foreign Language Learners through Games” will explore the research on how games and movement engages learners, how movement furthers processing, and will demonstrate specific high and low energy/tech games to use in the Foreign Language classroom. The language skill is identified through backwards design, and the topics are identified through the examination of a short‐fiction text. We will look at Depth of Knowledge, and cognitive rigor, and then explore the new World Language Cognitive Rigor Matrix. We will then apply that matrix to upcoming units to adjust for deeper thinking and higher rigor. We will take look at the most recent national, state, and local news on policies and legislation including the New American Academy of Arts and Science (AAAS) Commission on Language Learning, High School Recognition of Global Competence, ESEA Reauthorization and the Seal of Biliteracy. Dr. Rachel Bachmann Assistant professor of German at the United States Air Force Academy, where she course directs and teaches beginning German courses. She received her Ph.D. in Modern German Literature and Culture from Indiana University in Bloomington and has taught German language, literature, and culture classes at the undergraduate and graduate level at Indiana University, Southwestern University, and the University of Arkansas before coming to USAFA in 2014. I speak Spanish and French and am currently teaching K‐5 Spanish and 1‐5 Heritage Spanish at an IB elementary in an urban area of Denver. Lyanne Terada Spanish Teacher, Adams 12 I have been an educator for the past twenty years: first a Peace Corps volunteer in Belize, then an elementary school teacher, and finally a public high school Spanish teacher. Coming from the state of Hawaii, CCFLT has helped me transition to the mainland by the quality of its conferences and the networking of professionals. In this interactive session, participants will experience how to frame the reading experience by creating activities that utilize images as text, encourage student movement, and establish thinking protocols. The Denver Public Schools no longer uses textbooks or a grammar/translation approach. Our instructional model is a communicative approach using Comprehensible Input as the basis for best practice teaching strategies for second language acquisition. Learn how we did it! View the proficiency exam data that spurred this district‐level decision and our growth over time. What does Advanced Low Proficiency look (sound) like? Why is this level in particular considered the cut‐off ? What type of practice can help a non‐native speaker reach that level? You’re not alone! In schools that are increasingly collaborative, and increasingly under pressure to produce results, conflict is natural and expected. Sadly, poorly managed conflict adds stress to an already stressful profession and drains many educators of their enthusiasm for the work. While typical teacher trainings give us tools for managing conflicts with students and parents, most of us have very little training for resolving conflict between our colleagues.
