Search for CCFLT and load event. 1 Letter from the President February 2014 Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the CCFLT Board of Directors, I would like to welcome you to our 2014 Spring Conference with over 80 sessions for you to attend! The Board has worked hard to put on this incredible professional development and networking opportunity for you! We hope you are ready to learn a lot and have fun while you are doing it! Our theme this year is “The Real World of World Languages.” There are so many buzzwords in education and “21st century, global citizens” is definitely getting used a lot these days. But, what does it mean and how does it affect our students and us? This is the question that Jon Valentine, our keynote speaker will address. As you attend all the great sessions over the next couple of days, keep this question in your head and ask yourself how you can incorporate all these new ideas into your teaching and preparing students to be global citizens in the 21st century. This conference is a place to learn new ideas and to re-energize you as a teacher. However, it’s also a time to network and meet other professionals as passionate as you are about teaching. Please plan to attend our receptions and luncheons and make the most of your networking possibilities. You can use this QR code or find the information on our website at www.ccflt.org! 2 Keynote Speaker: Jon Valentine Global Competence in the 21st Century Saturday, February 22nd, 2013 9:30 – 10:30 in River Birch Ballroom It is our time! How did we get here and where are we going? Everything has shifted following the great recession. The skills that our parents and grandparents needed to succeed look very different than those that our students will require to thrive in a global economy. Every business is now a global business, and proficiency in a world language other than English is now the greatest competitive advantage in every career field. Come learn how linking our programs to college and career readiness initiatives as well as career and technical programs can add a new energy and relevance to the work that you do every day - and will ensure that your students' college applications and job resume's fly to the top of the pile. What a wonderful time to be a world languages teacher! For over fifteen years, Jon has worked with experts in education, policy, and workforce development to connect the global workforce needs of industry with educational policy and world language programs. As the Program Manager for Languages and Global Initiatives for the Georgia Department of Education, Jon spearheaded development of state-level international partnerships, led educational and business delegations abroad, and oversaw the development of the Georgia Workforce Development Initiative – a multi-agency program linking international businesses in Georgia with area partners in education. Since June, 2013, Jon has been the Director of Foreign Languages for Gwinnett County Public Schools where he is currently overseeing the design and implementation of the district’s first dual language immersion schools, leading proficiency-based language program development, and coordinating international business outreach initiatives. As a classroom German teacher in Fulton County Schools, Jon more than doubled the size of his middle and then high school German programs by focusing on proficiency targets and workforce relevance. He is a certified-advanced speaker of German and recipient of several service and leadership awards from consulates and international cultural organizations. In addition, Jon serves on multiple local and national world languages and educational governance boards. He received his Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Georgia State University at Atlanta and Bachelor’s degrees in Education, International Studies, and German from Miami University at Oxford. He created a fun environment for learning Spanish. There is no question that he deserves this award.” Trace Mulberry, former student For ten years, Shannon Ruiz has worked as a Spanish teacher at Dunstan Middle School in Lakewood. He has served Jefferson County School District with curriculum, diversity, and assessment projects throughout his career. Shannon has been an advocate for collaboration among world language teachers by creating his web site, www.shannonruiz.com, which offers free resources for teachers. He regularly presents his ideas at CCFLT conferences, in addition to other state, regional, and national conferences. In his school, Shannon has served in leadership roles in many areas including the introduction of Standards Based Instruction and Performance Based Assessment. His students, parents, and peers have recognized him for his innovative ideas and engaging instruction. Shannon graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in Spanish and completed a Master’s degree in Education at the University of Phoenix. He currently lives in Arvada with his wife and two sons. 5 Know someone that should be recognized statewide? Nominate him or her to be the next CCFLT Teacher of the Year! Go to the CCFLT website (www.ccflt.org) and click on the Teacher of the Year tab for application and award information. 6 Thursday’s Session Schedule Two-‐hour sessions from 5:00pm – 7:00pm T1: The Common Core and World Languages Presenter: Anna Crocker Room: Big Thompson The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects have four different strands, which are 1) Reading, 2) Writing, 3) Speaking and Listening, and 4) Language. These sound a lot like our state and national standards, don’t they? This presentation will talk about how the anchor standards in each strand support the Common Core when we teach with our Colorado Academic Standards and the ACTFL National Standards in mind. Topic: Curriculum and Articulation Language of Session: English Levels: All levels T2 – Staying Afloat in the New Colorado Evaluation System Presenter: Mira Canion Room: Carter Lake Get ready to interact with fellow educators as we share experiences with the Colorado Evaluation System. Participants will have lists of solid activities and ideas, along with a better understanding of how to meet the requirements of an evaluation. Some topics to be discussed will include measuring student growth, appropriate assessments, learning objectives, literacy skills, and background knowledge. Topic: Curriculum and Articulation Language of Session: English Levels: All levels T3: Making Anything Comprehensible: Achieving 90% Through Total Comprehensible Input Presenters: Mary Overton and Annabelle Allen Room: Lake Loveland Have you ever wondered about using Total Comprehensible Input, TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling/Storyasking), or TPR in the classroom? If so, this session is for you. We will explore the use of these techniques, teach songs, leveled readers, directions, and more using the target language for at least 90% of class. Several activities will be demonstrated and every activity also gets kids talking in the target language. You don't have to run, but don't be late! Topic: Methods and Techniques Language of Session: All Levels: All, New Teachers F2: Online Speech Tools Workshop Presenters: Courtney Fell and Edwige Simon, CU-‐ Boulder Room: Elderberry – Two-‐hour session This workshop is dedicated to web-‐based and free voice recording tools such as VoiceThread, Vocaroo or Voki. Teachers can use these tools to 1) model pronunciation, 2) offer students additional opportunities to develop their speaking skills outside of the classroom, and 3) conduct oral assessments. We have 1:1 iPads but even if you don't, this presentation will open up a new world of technology in the classroom. There are lots of educational apps, games, etc., that we will be sharing with you to enhance and extend 2nd language acquisition. Discuss something you just heard in a session or share an idea that you are currently using. This is a great way to network with other language educators from across the state! We will demonstrate how to stay in the target language while using YouTube videos to provide comprehensible input in the form of questioning techniques and scaffolded embedded readings. Make new friends here at CCFLT! 11 F7: Designing Engaging and Effective Presentations Presenter: Anna Cook, CU-‐Boulder Room: Carter Lake A Attendees will learn how to design presentations based on fundamental design concepts of color, legibility, and image use. We will discuss content organization, thematic design, strategies for effective student focus and free online presentation tools such as Prezi and Haiku Deck. There will be a sign-‐up posted outside the room. This discussion is limited to 12 people, so sign-‐up now! Norma will be able to address questions and concerns about: what new teachers should know, discipline, getting students to use the target language, the AP program, the use of humor, and assessments. Long, CU Boulder Room: Lake Loveland A The personal narratives of four University of Colorado Boulder graduates in “International Spanish for the Professions” provide insights into how the study of Spanish in high school supported their university level pursuit of a liberal arts understanding of culture and cross-‐cultural communication which subsequently has enhanced their careers after college. This session will discuss the steps that were taken to get a Spanish for Leadership class started at Castle View HS. Ideas for the curriculum will also be given. This idea could be applied to any language and can be repeated at your school or ideas can be incorporated into already existing language classes!
