A Successful La Salle Dance

The time of the year that many La Salle Students look forward to: The La Salle Dance: Part 1. When I asked students
how they felt about the upcoming party, they responded by saying, “I can’t wait,” or like we always say “ It’s going to be “LIT”
bro!” Nothing but absolute excitement was expressed by the students.
The day of the dance approached quicker than we expected. Everyone seemed like they were in an amazing mood Friday. Fast forward a couple of hours: the party started and everyone filed into the gym to have a great time. Many of our students
made connections with girls and more importantly, made better connections with the guys we call “brothers” here at La Salle.
Overall, the night was indeed a success. Unfortunately, there was some criticism about the party as a whole and the DJ as well.
However, when Team Supreme ran for Student Council, our goal was to help you , the students, to have a great year. With that
being said, Team Supreme is proud to say that there will be a second dance on March 27th. That’s right, there will be a Part 2 to
the Dance. To make “Part 2” better, we will be asking students about certain things they would like to hear to make the La Salle
Dance even better. As always, Team Supreme values your opinions and intend to make this school year better than ever. Give us
your opinion, place it in the Suggestion Box. Let’s make “Part 2”…. LEGENDARY!

Editor-In-Chief Notes

We’re now into our fourth month of school and time has certainly gone by quickly. Before we know it, it’ll be June, and
we’ll happily be gearing for summer vacation! As we move into the new year, and get closer to mid-terms and SAT’s. I want to
remind all of you about upcoming events. First, the Talent Show is coming up quickly upon us and we want all of you ( or majority of you ), to show off your talents, show what you are made of on Febuary, 27th. So bring your friends and show your talents!
Secondly, after a successful La Salle Dance three weeks ago, many students are looking forward to the second La Salle Dance on
March 27th so be on the lookout soon.
There are even more changes coming to La Salle within the coming months. The Cardinal will have a new outlook in the
coming weeks so be prepared for that. Moreover, as many of you have requested, we will have vending machines in the coming
weeks. That is not fiction, that is indeed a fact. The Board of Trustees has voted yes to make La Salle Academy co-ed. Much planning and much detail must be completed in order for this to happen. I know many of you are excited and you should be. Like I’ve
said before, La Salle is changing and it’s changing for the better. Our family is becoming even bigger...are you ready for change?

“La Salle Works”

La Salle’s revamped internship program is back! The internship program at La Salle is no longer called the
Internship Club, it’s now called “La Salle Works.” And “La Salle Works” is starting off the right way; this past October the first ever “La Salle Works” reception was held. Many prospective students as well as many company executives were present to see the best La Salle has to offer. This event was a way for many La Salle students to network and
connect with alumni and other major businesses, printing firms, volunteer opportunities, and many more.
Before the event, many La Salle students put time and effort into making their resumes perfect, doing practice, mock interviews, practicing good business etiquette, and
making sure everything is perfect just for this one event. This
shows the dedication, the commitment, the time and energy of
La Salle students. Many alumni and connections that “La Salle
Works” founder, Mr. Sullivan and La Salle’s President Dr.
Guerriero. Made came to the reception as well. Quite frankly,
that’s what it’s all about; it’s all about networking….making
connections that you can use down the line. There has been a
saying going around lately, that “it’s not what you know...it’s
who you know.” The many events that “La Salle Works” will
plan will be sort of the point of emphasis as the La Salle students start building careers, realizing what they want to do in
life and what they want to become.
Thus this is an exceptional outlet for them. Currently,
many students are working on becoming interns at some of the
places “La Salle Works” is offering. One of the highlights

ing for an engineering company in New York City. In addition, many students are planning to get internships and/or volunteer opportunities at The “GO” Project. Some people
are interviewing and making connections for internships with-in the Sports Management field...in areas such as the
NBA, NFL, and MLB.

Presidential Installation Gala

An event that truly puts La Salle back on the map! An
event that will go down in history because the first female
President in La Salle’s history is installed. An event many of
La Salle’s past, present, and future attended because they
wanted to see how La Salle is doing. They wanted to see just
how good the tradition of 167 years has been at present and
how it’s still going strong. ALL of this happened on November 19th, a day that will forever be marked as the “rebirth” of
La Salle Academy. As La Salle’s “new beginning”; as to truly
again say La Salle is back. This event was none other
than...the Presidential Installation Gala. Dr. Guerriero becomes the first female President in La Salle’s history on that
eventful night. At the Installation, Mr. Val Lehr ( Class of
1958 ) made a moving speech about La Salle and about Dr.
Guerriero. Another memorable speech was from Br. Dennis
Malloy, FSC who really showed what La Salle is all about.

thanked La Salle, but showed what La Salle is dedication. Last, but not least, Dr. Guerriero, made another moving speech on
what La Salle is...what La Salle is about…and how La Salle will continue forever and remain in the “Pantheon” of the best Catholic High Schools in New York City. During desert, an “all about heart” video truly showcased all of La Salle Academy. It
showed that La Salle students are “Brother’s Boys;” it showed that La Salle’s past, present, and indeed future will always be.

Veteran’s Day Assembly

Veteran’s Day is a time to truly remember and celebrate our veterans of past, present, and indeed future. These men and
women have put their lives on the line for us each and every single day. How can we thank them for their service and their sacrifice? How can we repay them? Quite honestly, we can’t..however we do try. We celebrated our veteran’s last month by honoring
them for their service. We congratulated them by telling them “we love you and we
thank you.” At the Veteran’s Day Assembly, the Navy, the Army, the Marines, the Naval Academy, the Air Force, and even the Coast Guard were present at the festivities.
Also present was Xavier High School’s Color Guard. Some of the guests we honored
and celebrated were Brigadier General John C. Thompson the 3rd, Billy Knapp,
Retired Colonel Paul Dietrich, and Master Sargent MaryKay Messenger. Mr.

La Salle’s “Money” Trip

The trip to the New York City Stock Exchange is something I would never forget. I learned about investing in stocks,
early plans for investing and planning for the future. I was able to see all the stocks that big businesses were investing in other
companies that very second. Companies from all over the world come to invest within the Stock Exchange and big television news
networks report from within the Stock Exchange.
Investing in stocks is thrilling and exciting. As I walked around the exchange, I was aware that anyone can invest in
stocks. Investing in stocks is a good way to save and accumulate money for
the future. Like gambling, investing is a risk; it is a chance, depending on
how a company is doing. The demand of the item is what determines whether you gain money or lose money. As our tour guide said, "Investing in
stocks is basically legalized gambling." In addition, over many years the
money you invest can double, triple or even quadruple. News Networks
such as NBC, CNBC, and Fox 5 News were prominent. I saw many of the
reporters as well as photographers. One of the three news networks was on
air while on the tour. These News Networks are mainly in the stock exchange to report how the stocks are doing. Touring the
Stock Exchange I had to be informed on stocks. Thus it’s a process that companies go through in order to make more money for
their businesses. Most of the employees transfer stocks and investments to different sections of the exchange trying to save company money. As one employee explained "Even if I save a company one cent, it is good because I am saving them one cent 75,000
times mainly because the company invested 75,000 shares."
Overall my experience in touring the Stock Exchange was great. Seeing companies stocks fluctuate was incredible. I
can’t wait for the opportunity to begin investing in the stock market.

Juniors’ Magical Trip to Salem, Massachusetts

Our trip to Salem Massachusetts was interesting and informative. We visited multiple museums such as the Salem
Witch Museum, the Witch Dungeon Museum, the Witch History Museum and the New England Pirate Museum. All the
museums depicted life in 1692 during the Witchcraft Trials. After visiting the museums, we went to see The Rebecca Nurses
Homestead.
Our first museum was the Salem Witch Museum. Inside we sat along the sides of the theater as we were directed
and we were given information about the Salem Witchcraft Trials. Above each wall was a model of sculptors of people, and
objects that represented the story being told about the trials. Our next museum we visited was the Witch Dungeon Museum
where we saw Elizabeth Proctor on trial for witchcraft. From there we were led to a basement which depicted how anyone
who was accused of witchcraft would spend his/her life. In the
basement, there were multiple dungeons where people that were
accused of witchcraft were placed. These museums made me
realize what a serious and frightening time 1692 was.

and the Witch History Museum had examples of the cells where
people were placed, if accused of witchcraft. As I learned more
about the Witchcraft trials, I found out that back then, wealth
determined the size of your cell. The cells in the Museum
showed very small spaces, some larger but not to any great extent. Almost all had iron bars, and were covered with bricks. The
victims accused of witchcraft were placed in the cells for long periods of
time. Some, like Rebecca Nurse, had chains around her neck, arms, and
legs mainly because most people believed that the devil was inside her.
This prevented the devil in her soul from ever escaping.
Seeing Rebecca Nurses Homestead in Salem was probably the
most interesting and memorable event I will ever remember. This really
stood out to me because I had seen so many pictures about Rebecca
Nurse’s house during all the museum tours. Seeing her house made me
think about her story as she was accused for witchcraft over 300 years ago.
To even think that her house would still be standing after hundreds of
years intrigued me. While I was there, I also wanted to see her grave because I read that she was buried in her backyard. Rebecca Nurses Homestead also fascinated me because the house is just
filled with so much history dating back many centuries ago.
Overall, I enjoyed the trip to Salem Massachusetts. I learned a lot more about the Witchcraft trials and even had the
chance to experience how life was like and how the Witchcraft trials all began. I understood a lot more about the witchcraft
trials and how much it affected Salem. I also realized why it is one of the most tragic events in American history. It was also
the first time I had ever been to Massachusetts and I am glad that I had fun and learned a lot.
Thanks to Dr. Guerriero for giving her support to this educational trip for the juniors at La

La Salle Literacy Forum

A Christmas poem can give anyone the Christmas spirit. A poem that I feel has the true meaning of
Christmas is the poem “All I want for Christmas”. The poem talks
about how God knows what your heart most desires and wants
you to ask him for what your heart desires. What I feel is the moral of this poem is that don’t be afraid to tell God how you feel
because he already knows. You should appreciate what you have
for it is the time for celebrating. The poem is centered on the idea
of God being there for you when you need him most. This is my
interpretation of the message and is a perfect example of God in
our lives. We should all follow this example and open our hearts
to God.

Open House

Open house. The day when teachers put on their best outfits. The day students magically find the will to wake up on a
SATURDAY to assist the school the best way they can. But most importantly a day that influences and encourages eighth graders
to become the future of La Salle Academy. The teachers and students arrive at the school for a hotelesque continental breakfast,
and for some last minute preparations of their classes. The future La Sallians arrive with their parents at around nine o'clock and
the open house officially begins. Teachers have students help them in present their classes very eloquently. There is a barrage of
parents and kids every five minutes. Students are pulled from classes to assist in tours. It is stunning to see so many people interested in a tour considering there's another open house later in the school year. I am one of the students pulled by Ms. Corbin, or
better known by the student body as Adrian's mom. Some students give tours in Spanish. During my tour, the teachers are
organized and articulate. English teachers with English teachers, math teachers with math teachers. Some classrooms are
unique as students describe the extra curricular activities La
Salle has to offer. for example Senior Liam Moran speaks to
the parents about the chess club, Senior Noah Griffith discuses
the newspaper.
As tours continue the true La Sallian spirit is in abundance among all participants. Teachers and students alike are

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare...buy or save your money?

Advanced warfare is the newest game that the call of duty franchise has introduced. Since advanced warfare has come out it has pushed
the call of duty franchise past the 10b mark. The game brings you a whole
new collection of upgraded futuristic weapons all which have holographic
scopes. They also added Exoskeletons to the campaign and online. They allow you to jump higher, become invisible for short
periods of time, and hover in the air for a few seconds.
The campaign takes place on 2054. You are playing as Jack Mitchell, a private in the marines who has lost his arm but is
given another chance to fight in the atlas program (a private military organization). He is given a new advanced prosthetic arm
and learns how to use it. Towards the middle of the campaign things take an unexpected turn but, I won't give too much away.
Overall advanced warfare has fully made up for the last game they released, call of duty: ghosts, which was not nearly as fun or
entertaining as advanced warfare.

The View of Chinatown

When people think of Chinatown, the first thing that comes to mind is a flood of Chinese people selling second hand
products to non-Asian Americans. Given, that some of the tourists fall victim to fake Gucci belts and iPhones that’ll melt in your
pocket made from plastic wrap (Yes, that actually happened.), Chinatown is actually a nice place. As a melting pot of Chinese
culture, with major locations in Flushing, Queens and Manhattan, New York, Chinatown is the closest you’re going to get to a full
Chinese experience, without having to board a flight to Mainland China. Chinatown reflects China’s style of a township, without
the Communist influences that is typically laced in the country.
As such, there are many cultural places built with western influences. With senior centers near Mulberry Street, to arcades and
youth centers on Mott Street, Chinatown is an attractive spot of Chinese culture. Tourists are nothing new to Chinatown, as the
fine dines and religious sectors attract many, few and far between America. Compared to other Chinatowns in the nation, New
York has the highest concentration of Chinese Americans, of over 100,000 people. Open shops lace the streets as plastic toys chirp
and beep, attracting tourists to the sounds. Stretching a long way on the nooks of the bottom section of Manhattan, Chinatown has
a certain charm that other similar townships lack; this makes it a tourist destination and hotspot for Chinese influences.
New York vs. The Dominican Republic

We are all accustomed to the bright lights and skyscrapers of New York. New York City, also known as the city that
doesn’t sleep is very special. It is a melting pot of different races, cultures, traditions, religions, foods and music. New York is very
different compared to my homeland, The Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is a nation in the Caribbean which is
prideful in their music, cuisine and culture. Life there is different from New York where life is much faster. It is easy to travel
within the boroughs of New York City, since public transportation is available. There aren’t any buses in the Dominican Republic
but there is a train in the capital.
The cuisine in the Dominican Republic is like no other. The cuisine is mostly made up of Spanish, indigenous Taino and
African influences. A famous food in the Dominican Republic is a sancocho, which is a soup that contains various condiments.
The soup includes potatoes, carrots, yucca, plantains, oyama, and meats. Another famous food is Mangu which are boiled plantains mashed up with butter, topped with onions. The Mangu usually goes with a side of fried cheese, ham, eggs and avocado. Fast
food places such as McDonalds, Burger king, Subways and Pizza Hut aren’t as common in The Dominican Republic as in New
York. Visiting beaches is easier in the Dominican Republic. It usually seems like a hassle to go to a clean beach or river in New
York. It was a pleasure to grow up in The Dominican Republic and the memories of the environment, culture and people will be
forever etched in my mind.

Do we have a future in another planet? Or is Earth doomed?

With our time on Earth coming to an end, a team of explorers undertakes the most important mission in human
history: traveling beyond this galaxy to discover whether mankind has a
future among the stars in an attempt to find a potentially habitable planet
that will sustain humanity.
To me, Interstellar showed how I always imagined and dreamed
space travel will be in hopefully the not so distant future. At its
core, Interstellar drives home the idea that human beings are curious creatures, and are inherently explorers. Like all the other great science fiction
film, Interstellar manages to tell a distinctly human story while it explores
real science. Overall, I thought the movie looked absolutely amazing because Christopher Nolan based visualizations in this film on science. The
soundtrack to Interstellar created by Hans Zimmer, was perfect; it fit in
with certain scenes throughout the movie making them very suspenseful
for the audience. I also thought that everybody in the film gave a great performance, even Mackenzie Foy (Murph) who played Matthew McConaughey’s (Cooper’s) daughter in the film; I thought the relationship between them was terrific. I was engaged throughout the movie, anxiously awaiting the conclusion.
I highly recommend you to see this movie especially if you love sci-fi movies, and just to be clear you don’t
need to like science to like this movie. If you want to see a movie that is directed by Christopher Nolan, I highly recommend you watch Inception and Interstellar.

The 3-D Printing Club

Have you ever wanted to learn more about the upcoming technology of this century? The 3D Printing Club has got you covered! One of the newest clubs, it focuses on teaching the club members the basics of this new technology. A good majority of it is learning
how to use 3D modeling software. These models you create are what the 3D printer would
print. From experience, this is incredibly fun because of all the ridiculous things you can
create.
I really enjoy 3D for a rather non conventional reason. I like the fact that the software is kind of quirky, and I have to find my own strange
ways to create the thing that I want. It really is also a very
good learning experience as there may be small things
that might be incompatible that I can't rightly change.
Once when I was trying to print my collection creation,
the statue just collapsed. I learned that we probably
shouldn't leave things in the air. In general I suggest everyone who wants to be tech savvy should join this club.
Soccer Season Wrap Up

A young team that lost its star player in Suleiman Haruna-Iya last year
to collegiate sports; a young team that had to know a new offensive and defensive
playbook under a new soccer coach,; and now a young team that is losing its best
goalie in Senior Paulo DeSouza...how can a team come back from losses with
many gains? The answer to that question is that many teams can’t accomplish
that...however, few teams can. Few teams that are truly special can do that. That
is what the Varsity Soccer team is...truly a special team. Yes, this team is a very
young team that will experience “growing pains”; but this team grows with every
win and every loss. That is something first year head coach at La Salle, Coach
Pally realizes. Coach Pally had this to say about the Soccer season: “ This was a
very young team that came a long way and played much better as the season went
-on.” This past season is something every player should look upon and grow and
get even better. Things look incredibly bright for the Cardinals as they start preparing for next season.

Bowling

The varsity bowling team suffered a hard loss at the hands of Molloy High
School only losing the first game by a couple of pins. As a team we came with the mentality to do all we can and leave nothing but our best on the lane. As coach Ron Anderson told the team “ Win, lose, or draw: do the best you can then pack up your stuff and
leave smiling”. We put all our effort into bowling; we went out and did as much as we
could for this team and it wasn’t enough to win. Was enough to put smiles on our faces
on that last ride home to LaSalle as the varsity bowling team. I would personally like to
thank the bowling team, Coach Ron Anderson, and Coach Cheryl Glover for this
amazing senior year I will miss the team. JV, on the other hand, won their first “B” division match and move on to play their next game after Christmas break in January.
Basketball

The season is picking up and we are coming to a lot of games within the next few weeks.
The Freshman, JV, and Varsity team have been doing well so far to start of the season. The Varsity
team defeated Summit Academy this past Wednesday with the score of 56-41. Brian Bass lead all
scorers will an efficient 31 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. J’nie Williams also contributed 12 points
and 4 rebounds shooting 4-7 from downtown. Also holding there own against Summit Academy’s
frontcourt was Stephon Riley with 9 points and 9 rebounds. The Freshman team also beat Xavier
High School this past week with a 35-32 victory, with Caleb Jacobs with 9 points and 3 rebounds.
In addition, the Varsity team lost to McClancy with the score of 58-53. Brian Bass led the team with
an efficient 27 points; the entire team played well in the second half, however, McClancy’s dominant
first half sealed the victory for the Crusaders. Moreover, the JV team defeated Eastside Community
High School with the score of 52-26.
Last weekend, the Varsity Basketball team played at the Br. Arnold Tournament, The Varsity Team went 1-2 last weekend with a 77-65 loss to Automotive on Friday and a loss to Norwich
(NY) 51-45 last Saturday. However, La Salle was able to break through with a win last Sunday with a
64-45 win over the Academy of American Studies. Brian Bass led the team with 20 points, 5 steals
and 5 assists. The Varsity team plays tomorrow at 10pm; the JV team plays this Monday against Lab
Museum; Varsity will play this Monday against Manhattan Village Academy. The Freshman team
will take the floor this Tuesday against Moore Catholic at Moore Catholic. Lastly, all three teams will
play on December, 30th, 2014 to play St. Dominic’s; so come out and support the Cardinals.

NFL

After the first half of the season the Giants are under .500. The Giants still can make it to the
playoffs. The rest of the NFC conference is not doing so good. The entire NFC south division is under .500.
The Cardinals currently hold the best record in the NFL. The Giants are currently in 3 rd place in the NFC
east. The Cowboys and Eagles have been on hot streaks. Both teams are competing for the lead of the division. The Seahawks and 49ers have had disappointing seasons so far. Last year both teams were well
over .500 at the midpoint of the season but both teams are just barely over .500. The Broncos and Patriots
are dominant as usual. No team is undefeated at this point in the season. Last year there were three teams
undefeated at this point.
Giants rookie Odell Beckham Jr. has become one of the best players on the Giants. Wide receiver
Victor Cruz is out for the season with a torn patellar tendon and Odell has really stepped up. Odell has had
over 100 yards receiving against the supposed best corner in the league, Richard Sherman. Even though the
Giants lost that game, Odell played well. The Giants have lost many players due to injury. Linebacker John
Beason is out with a toe injury, cornerback Prince Amukamara is out with a bicep injury, Rashad Jennings
should be returning soon, but he had a knee injury. Quarterback Eli Manning is still getting used to the new
offense. Let’s hope that the other half of the season goes better for the Giants.
Baseball

Baseball season is fast approaching. Clinics for Junior Varsity and Varsity baseball have
begun for the upcoming season. It is very competitive as over fifty students try to earn a spot on
either team. Last year, the Junior Varsity went to the City Championship game but came short and
finished second to Monsignor Scanlon High School. The Varsity had a rough year last year and
looks to improve on their weaknesses. This year, La Salle has made changes in their coaches. They
have added a new hitting coach named Alex Cordero. They have also named Coach Ariel Torres,
the head coach, for Junior Varsity Baseball. Coach Luis Muriente will now be the assistant Varsity
Baseball. With the changes in the coaching staff, La Salle looks to win the City Championships in
both levels.
Varsity has also added players from Bishop Ford Central High School. Antonio Rivera,
Christian Gil, and Ben Ramos have joined La Salle’s baseball team. Seniors Aidan Gomes, Antonio
Rivera, Christian Gil, Luis Nieves, and Ben Ramos went to Florida to get scouted for baseball. Each
performed well in the games they played and got the attention of a few college coaches. Captain
Aidan Gomes, Antonio Rivera, and Luis Nieves look to lead Varsity on the right path this year and
to the City Championship. Both J.V. and Varsity seasons begin in spring of 2015. By then, the official roster will be made and the path to bring a City Championship to La Salle will begin.
