D
urack institute of technology’s airport technology park
campus is ready for business.
The building is set in landscaped grounds and is a founding tenant of the City of Greater
Geraldton’s new airport technology park, 10-kilometres from
the main Geraldton campus.
Courses delivered at the new
facility are in the automotive,
engineering and work health and
safety industries.
With a state-of-the art workshop north of Perth and with
industry-experienced lecturers
who are more than just tutors,
businesses can enrol their apprentices in heavy duty mechanical courses for the mine
site, agricultural or automotive
industry.
Training director for mining,
engineering, transport and art
Darren Winterbine said Durack
offered specialised short courses
for industry as well as apprenticeship training.
“Courses can be customised to
an organisation’s requirements,”
he said.
Work health and safety courses
are also well catered for at the
new campus and employees
from different Geraldton organisations including Strathalbyn
Christian college and Main Roads
WA, came together for the inaugural work health and safety
class last month.
Durack work health and safety
lecturer Keith Bone said the facilities were second-to-none and
students also benefited greatly
with class input from senior
worksafe inspector Colin Buck.

arly birds pre-kindy offers
a school readiness program for children aged three
to four years.
The centre provides a gentle
introduction to formal learning
experiences by utilising best
practices of early childhood
education such as learning
through play and real life
experiences.
All sessions are facilitated by
the owner/director who holds
a bachelor of early childhood
education.
What are families saying
about early birds pre-kindy?
“Milla has never been left
with anyone other than family. It took a few weeks but
due to your fantastic staff and
nurturing environment she
absolutely loves coming to
early birds pre-kindy. She has
gained so much confidence,
development in her play skills,
sharing with others and is
beginning to write her name.
I would recommend your prekindy to others.”
— S and J Rainoldi
“We are so happy to have
found early birds pre-kindy.
Miss Michelle and Miss Elaine
are so warm, kind and attentive to the children. The space
is well set up and each day is
planned with a good mix of
free play and group activities (with some fun play style
early literacy, numeracy and
science included). I also love
the short updates during the
day to let me know how my
child is doing. I highly recommend this kindy with five
stars.” — N Bradshaw
“After booking my daughter into early birds pre-kindy
rather last minute, I could not
be happier with my choice.
Miss Michelle and Miss Elaine
are awesome with all the kids
and it shows, my daughter
simply adores them both. The
attention to detail into each
and every session is over and
above expectation. I love seeing the joy in my daughter’s
face on kindy days and how
she always speaks with such
excitement about the things
she’s done at kindy.”
— N Bush.

Forward thinking
at Montessori
Open Morning
I
n recent years there has been a growing
conversation internationally about the need to
radically change how education is delivered to
students both from the younger years through to
high school.
Experts in many fields have clearly shown that
the students of tomorrow need to learn skills
which are essential in their ability to productively
contribute to the dynamic and ever-changing
world.
These skills include creativity, communication,
critical thinking and collaboration.
They have also shown that being a number in a
larger school is not always in the best interests of
children.
Students need to understand what it means to
persevere and to learn from failure.
Teachers need to help them engage with the
larger world and find out what motivates them as
an individual, helping them find a path toward living a meaningful and fulfilling life.
Montessori, which has a 100-year history, already
does what experts and innovators are saying is
desperately required in the world of education
today. Perth Montessori school, a progressive and
forward thinking Montessori school, keeps up with
the practices in education.
It works tirelessly to teach to every student’s
interests and passions beginning at the tender age
of three and continuing all the way through to high
school.

committed to helping
and supporting each
other.
The school is now in
its sixth year of running a peer support
program, which aims to
build the harmony, social skills and connectedness of students.
In first term all year
six students undergo
intensive training to
become group leaders.
These students then
take charge of a group
of younger students
from years one to five.
The year six group
leaders work from a
set program of activities on topics including
anti-bullying, building
resilience, how to make
friends and how to
maintain friendships.
School principal Shaun
O’Neill said the program
was a success.
“It has provided opportunities for all our
year six students to
be trained in developing leadership and
management skills,” he
said. “The sessions provide opportunities for
the children to discuss,
share and learn how to
better deal with various
social situations so that
they become more confident and self-assured.
“The sessions provide
a unique opportunity
for children from across
all year levels to get to
know each other better.
This builds the social
cohesiveness, harmony
and sense of belonging
within our school.”

ohn Wollaston Anglican community school has this year seen the
launch of its bright futures positive
education model.
John Wollaston’s pastoral care
philosophy is about strengthening
relationships, building positive emotions, enhancing personal resilience,
promoting mindfulness and encouraging a healthy lifestyle.
As part of the model encounter
experiences are developed for each
year group from year two onwards.
Encounters are designed to build
character and resilience by taking
students out of their comfort zones.
A recent successful encounter experience was the year seven excursion to the salvation army services
in Perth.
Whilst many found the experience
confronting, they were also inspired.
Other encounter experiences at

Broad learning at Mazenod
M
azenod college continues to pursue excellence in providing quality
education for boys within
the context of a Christian
and Catholic environment.
The college offers a
broad curriculum including specialist science and
specialist music programs,
providing opportunities for
students to harness their
unique talents and skills
in their pursuit of personal
excellence.
It aims to promote an
understanding amongst
students that the attainment of academic excellence is not necessarily
measured by the achievement of multiple A grades
or being the top student in
the class.
Mazenod college also offers a range of career and
vocational education and
training (VET) services.
Some of these services
include career lessons,
careers counselling, guest
speakers from a range of
industries and the delivery of a number of VET
certificates.
Students are also able
to complete job matching activities and develop
a career portfolio, which
they can use when applying for jobs.

umen Christi college is getting great results
with its junior transition program but it’s
important to also consider what a school can
offer students in upper school that will prepare
them for life after high school.
Lumen Christi college offers students in
years 11 and 12 a diverse range of programs
due to facilities such as the sports centre, the
performing arts centre and the technology and
enterprise learning area.
The latter includes a spacious and fully
equipped manual arts centre and virtual business event company.
The college also offers vocational education
and training (VET) both on and off campus.
Lumen offers certificates in business, creative
industries (media), engineering (both technical
and metal fabrication), sport and recreation
and visual arts.
Two new courses have also been added to
the scope including certificate II in outdoor
recreation and a certificate II in dance on
campus.
Lumen’s dedicated VET staff will also arrange
for students to complete a VET certificate at
a tafe campus where possible if their chosen
course is not available at the college.
There is a senior transition centre for the
upper school students, which houses a career
development advisor and a vocational education advisor who meets with students and
parents to help them make the best choices
regarding courses that lead to achieving their
dreams.
For students with an ambition to achieve a
university degree Lumen’s student numbers
and facilities enable a large range of ATAR
options that are not always available at all
schools.
In addition to traditional academic subjects
such as mathematics, physics, chemistry,
English literature, history and economics, the
college offers ATAR courses in drama, visual
arts and physical education.
Lumen Christi college is taking applications
for enrolment for students in years seven to
12.
If you are considering options available for
your child in the upper school years, call Alyce

illiam was nearly two years old
when he suffered severe burns
from a household accident.
His mother had recently completed
a first aid course and knew what to
do in an emergency.
“When my son was 23 months he
was badly burned by a cup of coffee,”
she said.
“Following my first aid training I responded quickly and stripped all his
clothes and put him in a cold shower
for 20 minutes before taking him to
hospital.”
Once in hospital William was cared
for by burns specialist Professor
Fiona Wood and in just four months
of treatment, he had no visible scars.
If it had not been for his mother’s
quick thinking the outcome could
have been far worse.
“Fiona Wood told me that if I had
not administered first aid William
could have been scarred for life,” she
said.
Professor Wood said 20 minutes of
cool clear running water reduced the
impact of burn injury in children by
80 per cent.
“This first aid message is fundamental not just for parents of chil-
