The two premiers will hold a bilateral meeting in Russia’s city of Ufa on the sidelines of the Shanghai summit while the negotiating teams of Iran and the 5+1 group of countries are finalizing the text of a possible nuclear deal in the Austrian city of Vienna. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a Eurasian political, economic and military organization, is scheduled to meet in the Russian city of Ufa on July 9 and 10. Iran, together with Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, are observers to the organization. Russia and China have supported the decision that Iran be granted fullmembership of the forum which was formed in 2001. The Department of Health (DOH) announced on Monday that a 36-year-old male foreigner who arrived in the Philippines from the Middle East tested positive for the virus and is now under quarantine. The foreign patient showed symptoms af- Front Page ter arriving in Manila from Dubai. He had also stayed in Saudi Arabia before flying to Manila. Health Ministry spokesman Lyndon Leesuy said that the man was admitted to a government hospital on July 4 and was under observation, adding that the DOH is monitoring eight people who had close contact with the patient to prevent the spread of the disease. Meanwhile, Health Secretary Janet Garin said there is no need to panic as there has been no known transmission to the community. Those who are at risk of contracting the virus are hospital workers and household members with close and repeated contact with the patient, Garin added. The Philippines reported the first case, which was a Filipino nurse working in Saudi Arabia, in January. The woman survived the disease. MERS has killed 33 people in South Korea, where 186 cases have been confirmed, according to the World Health Organization. The MERS outbreak in South Korea is the biggest outside the Middle East region. MERS was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. The disease is part of the corona virus family of viruses, which includes the common cold and SARS. It can cause symptoms including fever, breathing problems, pneumonia and kidney failure. There is no known cure or vaccine for the disease yet. About 36 percent of reported patients have died, according to the World Health Organization. Russians find cure to Alzheimer’s disease Russian scientists have reportedly discovered a new technique of DNA repair by which neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s may be forestalled and even cured. “Early detection and repair of damaged DNA is essential for cell functioning and survival,” concludes a study by a Russian research team titled, “Structure of transcribed chromatin is a sensor of DNA damage,” and published Sunday in the Science Advances journal. The study raises the question of singlestrand breaks (SSBs) which are referred to in the paper as “common DNA damages generated during various processes of cell metabolism.” According to the study, “Unrepaired SSBs can interfere with transcription, replication, and DNA repair; induce accumulation of double-stranded DNA breaks; increase genomic instability and apoptosis [process of programmed cell death]; and lead to severe neurodegenerative diseases.” Common examples of neurodegenerative diseases are Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s as well as spinal muscular atrophy. Professor Vasily Studitsky of the Lomonosov Moscow State University, who led the research team that conducted the study, told science portal psys.org that his team of scientists “has shown, not yet in the cell but in vitro, that the repair of breaks in the other DNA chain, which is ‘hidden’ in the nucleosome, is still possible.” “According to our hypothesis, it occurs due to the formation of special small DNA loops in the nucleosome, although normally DNA wounds around the histone ‘spool’ very tightly,” he added. The study also concludes that such observations “raise the possibility that nucleosomal structure could affect the process of detection and repair of DNA damages.” Authors of the research say their findings can suggest the “existence of a chromatin-specific, transcriptiondependent mechanism that allows detection of NT-SSBs that are otherwise hidden in the chromatin structure.” Iran jumps 2 spots in world fencing rankings Iranian, Turkish singers to perform in Istanbul in August Iranian singer Kamran Rasulzadeh accompanied by Turkish vocalist Murat Kekilli will give a joint concert in Istanbul on August 21. The performance is part of program entitled “Persian Night”, which will be held at the Halic Congress Center in Istanbul, Rasulzadeh said in a press conference at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall on Saturday. Kekilli and Rasulzadeh will perform two pieces jointly and then each will give their own performances during the program, the coordinator of Rasulzadeh’s performance, Arman Mehraban, said at the conference, according to Tehran Times. He added that he has prepared the musical score for each member and hoped that the band will make its best efforts to give a good performance. Rasulzadeh called Kekilli a fine, committed singer and added that he had tried to arrange the joint concert in Tehran twice over the past few years, however, the concerts were canceled for reasons unknown. “Based on a signed agreement, we will possess the copyrights to distribute the video of the concert, and we are planning to film and release the concert here in Iran,” he explained. Rasulzadeh has performed “Bu Aksam Olurum” (Tonight I Will Die) with Kekilli a few years ago. New Yorkers protest police brutality on July 4th New Yorkers held a protest against police brutality amid July 4th celebrations. New York Prospect Park has been the scene of a protest where a large group of people demanded justice for police brutality victims in the United States. The protesters on Saturday expressed their anger over the shooting deaths of a number of AfricanAmerican citizens by unfurling a giant banner that read “Stop killing black people.” The group urged the American people to think about the patriotic values that are supposed to be honored on the Independence Day, July 4. Limited freedom for black people in the United States was another key issue that was pointed out in the protests. Imani Henry, an African-American activist, told Press TV that people in his country are attacked by police on a day-to-day basis. “For us it is not just about police brutality, it is about a war on us, an economic war,” he said. The protesters also remembered some of the well-known victims of police brutality who were killed by police in cold blood. “I’m here today because I want to raise the question of whose independence are we truly celebrating?” said Kalisa Moore with the People’s Power Assembly. Black people are being killed with impunity every single solitary day,” she said. “There has been over 500 cases of murders by police terror this year alone and we haven’t even reached a full year.” The protesters were then joined by a sympathetic crowd of people who were initially gathered in the park for the Independence Day celebrations. New York police were present at the scene and reportedly expressed hostility towards the protesters, but they did not take action as they were outnumbered.
