MAIN ATTRACTIONS The Reader Doubt Waltz with Bashir A Word About Our Main Attractions: Sunshine Cleaning Frost/Nixon USA /Germany – Stephen Daldry Director Stephen Daldry (The Hours) brings another literary gem to the screen with this adaptation of the novel by Bernhard Schlink. In post-WWII Germany, a 15-year-old boy and a much older woman come together for a brief, forbidden romance. The woman soon vanishes without warning, but they are reunited years later when he discovers that she is on trial for war crimes. Starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes. We try to play each of the films on these two pages as soon as possible. Sometimes, however, because of scheduling conflicts or problems with print availability, we are unable to play a film before its video release. (The “theatrical window” is getting shorter and shorter.) We apologize for when this happens. Know that it is our top priority to play as many great films for you as possible. For more information, visit our website. Thank you. USA – 1 hr 44 min – John Patrick Shanley John Patrick Shanley brings his awardwinning play to the silver screen. Set in New York in 1964, a nun confronts a priest after suspecting him of abusing a young black student. A moral battle of wills ensues in this gripping story that is ultimately about the quest for truth. Starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams. USA – 1 hr 42 min – Christine Jeffs SUNSHINE CLEANING is a charming independent film about a family on the lower end of the Albuquerque food chain. The story is completely carried by strong lead performances: Amy Adams as the plucky older sister who starts a business that cleans up crime scenes; Emily Blunt as the dysfunctional and edgy younger sister; and Alan Arkin as the blunttalking, lovably cranky patriarch. It’s a little bit like Little Miss Sunshine, Part 2 — but that’s a good thing. Israel – 1 hr 30 min – Ari Folman with subtitles BASHIR is an animated documentary from Israel about the 1982 War in Lebanon, featuring astonishing animation made from images originally shot on film that create a surreal landscape of memory. The film becomes bleaker by the moment, but it is a thrilling, subjective response to war. This is a cineaste’s marvel, and unlike any other film you’ll see this year. USA – 2 hr 2 min – Ron Howard Frank Langella is captivating as Nixon in this shrewd drama about the historic 1977 TV interview of the former president by an unlikely television personality. The match between the two men is compelling cinema — more psychological than political in nature. FROST/NIXON is a beautifully acted film that is by turns suspenseful, funny and emotionally engaging. With Michael Sheen as David Frost. MAIN ATTRACTIONS Milk I’ve Loved You So Long Slumdog Millionaire Synecdoche, New York The Wrestler The Boy in the Striped Pajamas USA – 2 hr 8 min – Gus Van Sant Gus Van Sant directs Sean Penn in this drama about gay-rights icon Harvey Milk. Milk was an activist and politician, and was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in America when he was voted onto the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. Penn, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch and James Franco star in this affirming and tragic drama. USA – 2 hr 4 min – Charlie Kaufman Screenwriting magician Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine) makes his directorial debut with this typically intricate, self-referential film. A theater director struggles with his art (and his women) as he toils on a wildly ambitious new play. This challenging film is a seriously bizarre contemplation of life, art, love, and death. And it’s required viewing for all serious filmgoers. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samantha Morton, Emily Watson, and Catherine Keener. France – 1 hr 57 min – Philippe Claudel with subtitles This quiet French film starring Kristin Scott Thomas is about a woman who gets out of jail after 15 years and goes to live with her sister. The focused story slowly builds to a peak as the two women remake their lives. The masterful performance from Thomas completely holds the film together with its absorbing emotional power. USA – 1 hr 49 min – Darren Aronofsky Mickey Rourke creates a galvanizing, humorous, and provocative lead character that is truly iconic. He plays a washedup wrestler who is trying to make a professional comeback as well as put his personal life together. Shot in a roughand-ready handheld style, the picture reeks with the atmosphere of low-rent dives and seedy clubs. THE WRESTLER is as direct and violent as its subject, but it’s also poignant and moving. With Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood. A MBLERT HEATER.ORG Great Britain/USA – 1 hr 56 min – Danny Boyle The latest from Danny Boyle is a vivid story of two poor kids from Mumbai, India that is told with an attention to character and culture that recalls Dickens. Surging with colors, music and the vitality of its youthful characters, SLUMDOG is tragic and joyful, brutal and beautiful — a real cinematic ride. Toss in a healthy dose of romance and this is an engaging journey from start to finish. Great Britain/USA – 1 hr 35 min – Mark Herman This unusual treatment of the Holocaust, from the point of view of a German boy, is gentle and haunting as it navigates its very dark subject. The film’s delicate touch has an almost fable-like quality, which allows it to re-examine its subject in a fresh way. But it is still powerful and moving, and it does pack an emotional punch. 215 345 7855 Ambler Theater Kids Matinees On Saturdays! January 25, Sunday, 1:00 pm February 15, Sunday, 1:00 pm March 22, Sunday, 1:00 pm Don Carlo Don Giovanni Il Trittico Mozart – Conducted by Bertrand de Billy and directed by Claus Guth at the Salzburg Festival Starring Christopher Maltman, Erwin Schrott, Dorothea Röschmann – 3 hr 20 min Puccini – Conducted by Riccardo Chailly and directed by Luca Ronconi at La Scala. Starring Juan Pons, Miro Dvorski, Paoletta Marrocu 3 hr 20 min From the most prestigious opera house in the world, La Scala’s 2008-9 season begins with Verdi’s DON CARLO, regarded by Verdians today as the composer’s richest, and possibly greatest work, with moments of overwhelming power and presence. Composer Charles Gounod praised this opera, based on the legend of Don Juan, as “a work without blemish, of uninterrupted perfection.” This production gives Mozart’s masterpiece a surreal treatment, thanks to inventive staging by director Claus Guth and set designer Christian Schmidt. IL TRITTICO is comprised of three one-act operas – Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi. This 2008 production, directed by Luca Ronconi and conducted by Riccardo Chailly, was performed at La Scala to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Puccini’s birth. April 19, Sunday, 1:00 pm May 17, Sunday, 1:00 pm June 7, Sunday, 12:30 pm Rigoletto The Coronation of Poppea (L’incoronazione di Poppea) Julius Caesar (Giulio Cesare) Verdi – Conducted by Daniele Gatti and directed by Stephane Braunschweig at Teatro alla Scala – Starring Ferruccio Furlanetto, Giuseppe Filianoti, Dalibor Jenis, and Fiorenza Cedolins – 3 hr Verdi – Conducted by Massimo Zanetti and directed by Stefano Vizioli at the Teatro Regio, Parma (Verdi Festival 2008) – Starring Leo Nucci, Francesco Demuro, Désirée Rancatore 2 hr 30 min This classical production of RIGOLETTO, one of Verdi’s most beloved operas, earned rave reviews at this year’s Verdi Festival in Parma. Master baritone Leo Nucci’s haunting performance as the title character steals the show, and no wonder – he’s performed the role over 400 times. Monteverdi – Conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm and directed by Robert Carsen at the Glyndebourne Festival – Starring Danielle de Niese, Sonya Yoncheva, Simona Mihai 2 hr 20 min International star Danielle de Niese returns to Glyndebourne as Poppea, the amoral and relentlessly ambitious heroine of Claudio Monteverdi’s last opera. Baroque specialist Emmanuelle Haïm conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Handel – Conducted by William Christie and directed by David McVicar and Robin Lough at the Glyndebourne Festival – Starring Sarah Connolly, Danielle de Niese – 3 hr 46 min Director David McVicar sets this acclaimed production of the Handel favorite in the early 20th century, during a period of British colonialism in Egypt. A highlight is the brilliant performance by Danielle de Niese, one of opera’s youngest stars, in her breakout role as Cleopatra. AMBLER THEATER: A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION After a year of increased programming and activities in our new front auditorium and five years of continued growth, the Ambler Theater is grateful to all of the individuals, foundations and companies that have made it possible.
