Roundabout work will continue until April
BY MANDY KLINE
CORRESPONDENT
Construction of the roundabout at
the intersection of Rts. 53 and 600 –
which began late last month – will take
at least another eight months to complete.
Around 150 hours of labor have gone
into the project since its groundbreaking on July 23. The official completion
date is April 26.
The total cost of constructing the
roundabout is $2.23 million. The costs
come from preliminary engineering,
right of way and construction. The cost
for construction alone currently stands
at $1.02 million.
Now that all of the land involved in
the roundabout has been cleared and
graded, the next step in the construction is to put in temporary pavement.
This pavement will essentially shift Rt.
53 slightly to the south at the intersection, according to Stacy Londrey, communications specialist for the Virginia
Department of Transportation in the
Culpeper District.
Traffic patterns will shift slightly
throughout construction, and there
may be a delay in traffic at times, but
the intersection will never be completely impassable to motorists, according to Londrey. “We’re doing the
work in phases so that traffic can continue to use that intersection,” she said.
The main improvement that the
county will see at the conclusion of this
project is the elimination of the sharp
curve that motorists face when they
come to the stop sign at the end of Rt.
600. “The sight distance for motorists
was not very good,” said Londrey about
the curve. “Putting in the roundabout
will improve sight distance, allowing
traffic to move more smoothly and
safely.”

It appears the water line project just
isn’t going to go away and all of us are to
blame. Not enough taxpayers are getting
involved.
I received an email from the Fluvanna
Taxpayers Association (FTA) responding
to Joe Chesser’s comments on a previous
water line newsletter. The FTA email must
have taken hours to prepare as indicated
by the length, details, and complexity of
the information.
It is beyond my comprehension that
the Board of Supervisors continues to
pursue this 10+ years project, at possible
taxpayers cost, during these difficult
economic times.

Wolff lists all the benefits that Obama’s
first term have brought. However, she’s
looking at the trees and missing the forest.
We are accelerating toward a society
controlled more and more by the elite.
The Federal Government is becoming
more and more powerful and is teaming
with large corporations and unions to
“do what is needed for the people” (for
example, fix the health care system so
that it efficiently provides health care for
all who need it).

A special thanks goes to Gena Keller,
James Barlow, the school board, former
players, coaches, and cheerleaders for
naming the new field “The Phil Browning
Field.” Phil Browning cared for his
players and was like a father to them.
There were many great players. The
first quarterback was Albemarle County
Sheriff Chip Harding, and that is just
an example of players who excelled. In
Fluvanna, Commissioner of the Revenue
Mel Sheridan was a great player. Karen
Pulham Bowles was one of the great
cheerleaders. Herman Key and Maurice
Carter were great educators. Skip, Lee,
and Dale Browning all played college
football.

I’m sure there are special interest
groups that will be enhanced by this
venture. Let them assume the risk by
forming a corporation and financing the

Leave the taxpayers alone. They
have enough problems without getting
financially involved with this water pipe
line dream.
All of us can show our appreciation, for
those acting on our behalf, by becoming
members of the FTA.

Comments from fluvannareview.com and Facebook
On an Aug. 9 online story about naming the football field Phil Browning
Field:
Phil Browning took me -- a short, chubby, bookish kid -- and turned me into a
starting football player and track athlete (for being able to pull that off, alone, he
deserves an honor!). He taught me how to block guys twice my size, how to play
hard and fair even amidst crazy trash-talk, how to enjoy running (a gift I appreciate every day when I hit the trail), how you get in life exactly what you put in.
That’s just how he changed my life. He did the same for our whole community
in a time of dangerous upheaval, and with the naming of the football field, may
he never be forgotten. – logentry
On an Aug. 1 story about student volunteers:
It’s nice to see students helping other students by donating some of the school
supplies that they do not really need. They would be able to help other children
with this selfless act. – chris
ATTENTION FLUVANNA COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT CLIENTS:
History shows that people, in the end,
don’t make out too well in such societies.
Think of the lords and the serfs. There
are numerous examples in more modern
times. I still remember seeing pictures of
East Berlin taken from West Berlin. There
it was for everyone to see: a dark, dirty,
dingy city right next to a vibrant, thriving
city. The first was a government where
the elites were totally in control. The
second was a less powerful democratic
government controlled society. What
do people like Wolff attribute these
differences to? Were the leaders of West
Berlin and West Germany just smarter
than those of East Berlin and East
Germany? Or did they just have a more
humane opinion of “the common man?”
For a current example, compare North
and South Korea.
The same people
but different forms
of governments.
It is my strong
belief, that the more
freedom
people
have, the better off they are. The less
freedom they have, the worse off they
are. We are certainly a long ways from
the extreme examples above. However, if
you look closely, you can see examples
where powerful elites make out well for
themselves at the expense of the little
guy. For example, look at education in
Washington, DC. Well paid government
workers and union leaders send their
children to private schools or live in
suburbs that have good public schools
while the only choice for people who
can’t afford these options is a school
system that has a 50% dropout rate.
Teachers’ unions, teaming with the
government, protect their own at every
turn. They resist charter schools. They
are against tax credits for private school
tuition. They won’t let the poor escape
from this education prison. Watch the
documentary “Waiting for Superman”.
What’s going on is criminal in my
opinion.
This is a vision of the health care
system of the future. In this health care
system of the future, the elites will get
what they need and everyone else will
only get what they’re allowed to have.

Who is John Douglass?
Brigadier General John Douglass, a
Democrat, seeks to represent the Fifth
Congressional District in the U.S. House
of Representatives. John Douglass is
a former foster child who rose to the
highest ranks of the U.S. military and
served our country with honor for 35
years under Presidents Reagan and
Clinton. Now retired, he and his wife,
Ann, own a small family farm and keep
busy raising their two teen-aged sons,
one of whom has autism.
On July 16, General Douglass
announced his Help Virginia Families
Plan. He proposes to support parents
and teachers, bring job creators and
seekers together, protect retirees and
veterans, keep communities safe and
help honor America’s founders. He
supports common sense, bi-partisan
proposals that will kick-start Virginia’s
critical transportation projects and
stop student loan rates from doubling.
John Douglass supports middle-class
tax cuts, protection of the environment
by banning uranium mining, and nondiscrimination within and outside the
workplace. He will tell anyone who forces
politics on women to “leave the family
planning up to our families.” Elections
are all about choices, and John Douglass
is the best choice for the people of the
Fifth Congressional District. To learn

Palmyra women admits
to embezzlement
Pleasant Grove
Rt. 53 • Palmyra, VA
A Palmyra woman pleaded guilty in
Fluvanna County Circuit Court Friday
(Aug. 10) to two counts of embezzlement.
Melissa Ann Bibb, a receptionist and
bookkeeper at Salon DeShano at the
Gate Plaza shopping center, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on each
count with all but six months suspended on each count, according to court
records. That means Bibb will serve an
active sentence of one year.
A third count was not prosecuted.
Bibb pleaded guilty to taking money
from the salon and spa on June 30 of
2011 and on January 16 of this year.
She was arrested on Feb. 28.
The amount taken was several thousand dollars. Bibb will be on probation
for three years after she is released and
must make restitution to the business.

Adult education will continue
BY KRISTIN SANCKEN
CORRESPONDENT
After the drastic million-dollar
budget cuts to Fluvanna County
Public Schools in May, one of first the
programs cut was Adult Education.
The elimination included Families
Learning Together, which educates
parents in order to help their young
children succeed in school. But Gayle
Von Keyserling and Mary Ott, who
ran the program, couldn’t bear to say
goodbye to the people they had come
to love and know.
“We couldn’t let go of the parents,
pull the rug out from under them,
it wasn’t fair,” said Von Keyserling.
“We are not dead, we are going to
continue.”
Families Learning Together will
operate this year three days a week on
grants from BB&T Bank, Wells Fargo,
Bama Works and Dollar General.
Unfortunately, Fluvanna’s local
cuts came at the same time that the
Virginia Department of Education
(VDOE) eliminated federal and
state funding for adult education
in Fluvanna County. The VDOE put
out a Request for Proposal (RFP)
for another entity to absorb adult
education in Fluvanna County.
The Adult Learning Center in
Charlottesville, applied for the
RFP and was awarded it. Fluvanna
will now be included in the newly
formed Thomas Jefferson Adult and
Career Education (TJ ACE), which will
administer any future federal and
state funding.
“We also seek additional funding
for places in the region, and certainly
Fluvanna County, which is at the top
of the list
because
t h e y
did
lose
funding,”
said Susan
E r n o ,
Program
Coordinator
at the Adult
Learning
Gayle Von Keyserling
Center.
“Families
Learning Together … is such an
outstanding program. I don’t know
anywhere in the state that has
anything as remotely similar or as
effective as they are.”
Before budget cuts, the program
served a total of 60 adults, and
included preparation for the General
Education Development (GED) test,
computer skills and home visits.
“It’s the most heartening thing
that I’ve heard in a long time that
this adult literacy program is coming
back,” said school board member
Carol Tracy Carr. “When we were
making those budget cuts, it was like
cutting up your child. It shows that
we can be creative.”
But not everyone on the school
board was pleased that adult
education will have to operate on
grants alone.
“That may be what our board of
supervisors may want, but it is at
a great personal sacrifice to keep
that program going,” said school
board member William Hughes,
acknowledging that Von Keyserling
and Ott will be volunteering much of
their time to keep costs down. “We
need a sustainable budget.”
Football field named for Phil Browning
BY KRISTIN SANCKEN
CORRESPONDENT
The Fluvanna County School Board
unanimously voted Wednesday night
(Aug. 8) to name the new football field
the “Phil Browning Field” after the late
Fluvanna teacher and athletic director.
“When I got here in August of 2010, I
have received no less than 15 letters from
different community members saying
that if this day ever comes we would
like to recognize this man who was a
coach and had touched the lives of a lot
of people,” said school Superintendent
Gena Keller.
Keller and the school board assigned
Principal James Barlow the job of
putting together a naming committee for
facilities at the new high school. The nine
people on the committee agreed on Phil
Browning Field before presenting it back
to the school board.
The field is located behind the new
high school on Rt. 53,
Phil Browning was a native of the
Kidds Store area of Fluvanna County
and worked within the Fluvanna school
system from 1969 until 1984. He worked
as a teacher, athletic director and coach.
In 1972, he led the Fluvanna football
team to an undefeated season. Browning

Sally Browning, Phil’s daughter (and

was there to speak on behalf of her father.
According to her, under her father’s
supervision Fluvanna won six state track
championships, two girls’ basketball
championships and two state football
runner-up titles.
“He instilled in a lot of people, and
a lot of players – both girls and boys –
to be the best that you can be,” said
Sally Browning. “It’s not always about
winning, it is about excellence. He really
emphasized to young people to be the
best that you can be, whether or not you
win or lose. He loved the community
and loved the school system … it would
be a wonderful honor to remember his
legacy.”

Fluvanna recognized as home school friendly

The
Organization
of
Virginia
Homeschoolers publically recognized
the Fluvanna County School Board for
being one of only 24 school districts in
the Commonwealth for being “home
school friendly.”
“We consider them one of the good
guys,” said Will Shaw, retired cofounder
of the organization and resident of
Zion Crossroads at the regular school
board meeting Wednesday night (Aug.
8). “The [school] board recognizes
that [homeschoolers are] part of the
community and we’re taxpayers.”
Shaw said the recognition was only
given to the top 18 percent of school
districts in Virginia for their policies
towards guidance and instruction for
homeschooled students, including
allowance of part-time enrollment.
“We just wanted to congratulate
you on the sense of community you
promote,” said Shaw to the school
board.
The number of students home
schooled in Fluvanna County has tripled
since 2005, to from 51 students to 154
students. The school division plans
to include more programs for home
schooled students in the coming year,
adding more online instruction options.

Fluvanna man searches for missing daughter
Timeline
Chuck Garrison and Annette Garrison
with their daughter, Antoinette.
Antoinette Marie Garrison has been
missing since July 21 from Colorado.
She may be in Virginia.
Garrison, also known as Annie, is
16-years-old. She currently lives in
Firestone, Colorado, but is originally
from Charlottesville and may be en
route to Virginia.
She is 5’2” with blonde hair, blue
eyes, and dimples.
BY KRISTIN SANCKEN
CORRESPONDENT
Fluvanna resident Chuck Garrison is
living any parent’s worst nightmare.
“I took my kids to the Capitol building
in Washington one time, [my eldest
daughter] Brooke was five or six-yearsold. I turned away, and I lost contact with
her in a sea of people. It was only for like
four or five minutes but everything was
in slow motion until I found her,” said
Garrison. “But it was nothing like this. It’s
just been surreal since this all happened.
Time stands still.”
Time has stood still for Garrison since
July 21, when his 16-year-old daughter,
Antoinette Garrison, went missing.
Antoinette, who sometimes goes
by Annie, is a “sweet, fun-loving, very
energetic,
run-of-the-mill
sixteenyear-old,” said her stepsister Brooke
Kallstrom. Like many sixteen-year-old
girls Antoinette spent her time listening
to hip-hop, shopping at American Eagle,
going to church events, and working parttime at Taco Bell.
But also like many sixteen-year-olds,
Antoinette is a child of divorce. Her
mother, Annette Garrison, and father
Chuck shared custody over the last
10 years, while they both lived in the
Charlottesville area. Antoinette spent her
freshman year at Monticello High School
and her sophomore year at Albemarle
High School.
But eight months ago Annette Garrison
moved with her daughter and her second
husband to Firestone, Colorado – a
northern suburb of Denver. The transition
was difficult for Antoinette.
“It seemed pretty bad to me, from what
I’ve been told,” said Kallstrom. “She just
did not like being out there. I think she
felt really isolated.”
The close-knit Garrison family lives
in Virginia, and Annette’s family lives in
California. Antoinette knew few people in
Colorado, except for Annette’s husband
and his family.
“Obviously, at 16, she had a rough
time moving,” said Annette Garrison.
“We talked with her and we felt we pretty
much got her on the right track, focused.
Everything was going good. She had a
job, she was taking summer classes, and
she was going to be a senior.”
Annette and her husband had even
allowed Antoinette to buy her own car
and begin planning to go to college back
in Virginia, where she wanted to go into
the medical field.
On the weekend of July 21, Annette and
her husband went to California to visit
family. They left Antoinette to spend the
weekend with her 24-year-old step-sister
Nikita ‘Niki’ Temple in Fort Collins, 40
minutes north of where her mom lived.
“I trusted Niki with Antoinette, onehundred percent,” said Annette. “[She]
and Antoinette always got along great.
It was like a sisters’ day out. I felt like
Antoinette really needed that sister bond,
to connect.”
On Friday, July 20, Antoinette’s
boyfriend
Kevin,
who
lives
in
Charlottesville, broke up with her over
the phone.
“They have been on and off for a
little over a year, a typical teenager
relationship,” said Kallstrom. “She knew
him from school, met him through a
friend.”
But Antoinette’s mother Annette never
liked Kevin and hoped the move to
Colorado would put the brakes on the
relationship.
The next day, July 21, at 11 a.m.
Antoinette said goodbye to Niki in order
to go to work at Taco Bell in Longmont,
Colorado – a 30-minute drive. But at 1
p.m. she called in sick to work and just an
hour later entered a Chase Bank in Fort
Collins, where she attempted to withdraw

her savings, but could not take out more
than $25 without parental consent.
“They have a video tape of her leaving
the bank around 2 p.m., that was the last
time she was seen,” said Chuck Garrison.
Antoinette’s stepsister Niki began to
feel unsettled when at around 6 p.m. she
couldn’t get a hold of Antoinette on her
cell phone. She called Annette and her
dad in California.
Immediately,
Annette
Garrison
called Taco Bell only to learn that her
daughter had called in sick to work.
Shortly afterward, Niki spotted the truck
Antoinette was driving parked in a remote
area of the apartment complex, unlocked
with keys inside. Annette instructed Niki
to drive down to her house in Firestone
and see if Antoinette was there. When
Niki arrived she found that Antoinette
had left a note and grabbed two weeks
worth of clothes.
“The note said that she wanted to be
home, that she was sorry she had to go …
and then ‘love you, Antoinette’ and she
drew a little heart,” said Chuck Garrison.
No one has heard from Antoinette
Garrison since.
The police investigations found that
Antoinette’s name hasn’t shown up on
any bus, train or air passenger manifests.
Her bank account has not been touched
and her cell phone has not been turned
on.
A spokeswoman for the Fort Collins
Police Department said Antoinette
Garrison is still considered a runaway.
“She left on her own volition.”
“It’s not like her not to communicate
with anyone – no friend at all, no family
member,” said Chuck Garrison. “She’s
very close to my daughter [Brooke], and
she’s never called her or contacted her,
no texts, nothing. That’s very unlike her.”
Brooke lives in Fort Riley, Kansas
and for the first week after Antoinette’s
disappearance she stayed in Kansas.
July 21 - Spent the weekend with her
step-sister in Fort Collins, Colorado.
July 21, 11 a.m. – Said goodbye to her
step-sister in order to go to work at
Taco Bell in Longmont, Colorado.
July 21, 1 p.m. – Called in sick to work.
July 21, 1:15 p.m. – Texted small talk
with her dad.
July 21, 2 p.m. – Entered a Chase
Bank in Fort Collins; attempted to
withdraw her savings, but could
not without parental consent.
July 21, 6 or 7 p.m. – Mother tried to
reach her at Taco Bell only to learn
that she called in sick that day.
July 21, after 7 p.m. – Step-sister
spotted her car (her mother’s car
that she was borrowing) parked in
a remote area in her complex not
near the step-sister’s apartment.
The car was left unlocked with the
keys inside; no sign of struggle.
Antoinette left a note at her mother’s
house is Firestone at some point. No
one is certain how this fits into the
timeline. The note said she wanted
to go back to Virginia.
No one has seen or talked to her since
July 21. Her phone has been turned
off/lost battery and she did not take
her car. Any ideas are appreciated.
“I thought that she may have come to
my house because she knew my address
in Kansas, but she didn’t,” said 23-yearold Kallstrom. “I bought a plane ticket to
come home on short notice because she
had been gone just about a week at that
point, and it was just getting really scary
and I felt the need to be home with my
family.”
Since Kallstrom got back to Virginia,
she, her father and cousin Cathy Garrison,
have been canvassing the area in search
of Antoinette.
“Any person I see, I usually tell them
what’s going on, I have a picture in my
pocket so they can see what she looks
like,” said Kallstrom. “We’ve been posting
a lot of flyers, faxing truck stops across
America – just trying to see if truckers
had seen her – talking to every person
we come into contact with, especially at
retail stores.”
Cathy Garrison has reached out to
truckers and traced the possible routes
Antoinette could have taken from
Colorado to Virginia. Charlottesville’s
downtown mall is plastered with posters
featuring Antoinette’s blond hair, blue
eyes and dimples. The Polly Klaas

FSPCA’s savvy director
resigns for health reasons
BY MANDY KLINE
CORRESPONDENT
Fluvanna’s SPCA is on the lookout for a
new director after Tricia Johnson stepped
down from the position on July 22.
Johnson remains involved with the
organization as a consultant, still coming
in to run the shelter a couple of days each
week until the Fluvanna SPCA (FSPCA)
finds a new leader. “I’m committed to the
organization and its work,” she said.
Johnson is leaving the post for health
reasons. She was diagnosed with lupus
of the central nervous system 20 years
ago, she said. She came out of remission
about six months ago. Because the
nature of lupus remission requires those
recovering to get a lot of rest, Johnson
knew that it was best for her and for the
FSPCA for her to step down from her
position.
“It’s frustrating, and disappointing,
to leave something that I am very
passionate about,” said Johnson.
“I was working 60 to 70 hours
per week,” she said. “That’s just not
something you can do and also get
better.”
As the FSPCA board continues its
search for a director that will fit perfectly
with the FSPCA’s needs, Johnson will
remain present to help in any way that
she can. “I wanted to assure the board
that I was going to help in whatever
capacity I can so that they can take their
time and find a really good director,” said
Johnson.
Johnson expressed her concern that
not enough community members
really know the full extent of what the
FSPCA means for Fluvanna County.
“We’re a rock star in the animal rescue
world,” she said. “We are one of only a
handful of no-kill communities in the
commonwealth.”
The FSPCA has even gained attention
from national publications such as
Animal Sheltering magazine and the nokill news blog (no-killnews.com). The
shelter has kept up its no-kill status since
Tricia Johnson
2010, one year after Johnson took over as
director. “I think that is a reflection of the
community we live in,” said Johnson. “I
really wish that the community and the
board [of directors] would stand on the
tabletops and shout about this.”
Johnson is also particularly interested in
community education and engagement.
She already has a curriculum set up that
is geared towards school children, which
will address topics such as how to choose
the right pet for your family or learning
about spaying and neutering.
In the meantime, Kelly Crawford,
director of operations, has taken the
reins to handle the daily functioning of
the organization. “I know the shelter
is in good hands, because she’s been
running the day-to-day operations under
me anyway,” said Johnson. “I’m excited
about the FSPCA’s future.”
The FSPCA will continue with its
operations as usual, with it’s biggest
annual fundraiser just around the corner.
On Sept. 15, the fourth annual wine
tasting fundraiser will be held at Keswick
Vineyards. The event will include a silent
auction and dessert bar in addition to the
tasting. Those interested can find more
details and tickets at www.fspca.org.

Sketching group forms
BY PAGE H. GIFFORD
CORRESPONDENT
A new artists’ group has formed.
The Sketchers, a spin-off of the
Fluvanna Art Association, are an
informal group who gather to relax,
draw, and practice skill and techniques.
Only sketching mediums are used
by this group, including graphite and
colored pencils (water soluble are
accepted), pen and ink, conte’ crayon,
water soluble and regular crayons,
charcoal, pastels and markers. The
only thing banned by the group are
paints and brushes.
The club formed when one member,
who often executes her work in pencil,
realized there was nothing for artists
who like to work in pencil or other
similar dry mediums. Soon a group of
ten and growing formed and met for
the first time last Saturday (August 4).
Their goal will be to come up with a
still life or subject for a life drawing and
practice drawing it while exchanging
ideas, suggestions and critiques. The
group unanimously wanted a less
formal atmosphere where they could
gather and just draw without meetings
and by-laws which govern many art
groups like their parent group the FAA.
Anyone interested in drawing,
exploring new techniques and would
like to practice in a friendly, fun group
of artists learning together, is welcomed
regardless of skill level.
The groups meets once a month on
the fourth Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the
Fluvanna Public Library.

Molding national champions – Fluvanna style
CONTRIBUTED BY
WILLIAM J. DES ROCHERS
Athletes from the Lake Monticello Karate Academy competed in the U.S. National Karate Championships.
Photos contributed by William J. Des Rochers.
Those with an institutional memory
of county government will recall that
several years ago, Silverman applied
for a special use permit to operate the
academy at its present location. What
was striking was not the application, but
the testimonials in support of it from

Something extraordinary happened for
Fluvanna County during a weekend in
mid-July. Nineteen athletes from the Lake
Monticello Karate Academy journeyed to
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to compete against
some 4,800 others in the U.S. National
Karate Championships.
They
achieved
astonishing
results,
winning
15
national
championships in various events and
garnering medals at a rate that would
have impressed even the most guarded
of optimists. This group – ranging in
age from eight to adult – hauled in 39
medals in total: 15 gold, eight silver and
16 bronze.
Consider this fact: “Team Intense,” as
they call themselves, averaged 2.1 medals
per competitor. If the entire U.S. Olympic
team were to win every available medal
at the London games, it would average
1.7.
One competitor, Kelsey Silverman,
was selected to the U.S. national team
that will participate in the Pan American
games in Mexico City.
There are reasons that the team is so
good. For one thing, they have to work
under the tutelage of Shihan Robert
Silverman, or “head coach” to the
uninitiated. He has run the academy
since its inception in 1995.

former students and parents. Rarely has
the community supported such a routine
application with such enthusiasm.
Training is not easy. Advancing to
higher belt levels is rigorous, and the
same rules apply whether one is eight
years old or an adult. The mental focus
is just as important as the physical ability
and the ethos of the martial art the
guiding force for conduct.
And lastly, to reach the nationals, one
must compete in state, and/or regional
competitions. As with everything else at
the academy, you do it the old fashioned
way – you earn it.
This year, Fluvanna has been riven by
political issues far more important than
games and tournaments. But it is helpful
for us to step back once in a while and
just admire the skill and grace that our
neighbors bring to the county in so many
ways.
Bill Des Rochers, a former writer and
columnist for the Review, is a proud
grandfather (Papa) of two of the champions.

A few hiccups for the new high school
BY KRSITIN SANCKEN
CORRESPONDENT
Just six days before the new Fluvanna
County High School was slated to
receive its first students on Aug. 13,
Principal James Barlow stood in an
entry hallway, studying his notes, and
rubbing his forehead.
“We’re short on desks and chairs,”
said Barlow. “We’re making do with old
desks and chairs until the new ones
come in September. Students will have
a place to sit.”
A janitor walks by and they exchange
a few words about whether or not the
dumpsters are in the right place and if
they have enough of them.
The kinks of starting a new school
year in a new building were still
working themselves out.

Transfer students
impressed with
new high school
BY KRISTIN SANCKEN
CORRESPONDENT
As confused parents and
students tried to navigate the new
330,000-square-foot high school
during the back-to-school open
house on Wednesday (Aug. 8),
gripping maps and wandering
aimlessly down hallways to find
homerooms – three students in
particular stood agape.
These three students are
attending the new Fluvanna County
High School as transfer students
from as far away as California to
as nearby as Albemarle County.
Unfamiliar with the past years of
local debate over the cost and the
need for the new high school, they
saw the building without bias and
were unprepared for what they
saw.
“I am very impressed, it’s
awesome,” said tenth grader Ireland
Camacho, who went to Albemarle
High School last year, but recently
moved to Lake Monticello. “This is
way better than AHS.”
“It puts that school to shame,”
said Ireland’s mother Charlene.
Eighth grader Cameron Coulter
struggled to figure out her locker
combination, as her mom coached
her. “Yep, now go all the way past
the first number, great! You got
it!” and the locker opens. Coulter
smiled broadly and closed the
locker to try again.
Coulter just moved to Lake
Monticello from California, the
child of a military family.
“This is a fantastic school,” she
said. “As much as we’ve moved,
I’ve never seen anything nicer.”
Meanwhile, on the other end
of the building Heather Snow
checked out the new nursing
classroom. Snow will be in the
tenth grade, and moved back to
Fluvanna after her family spent the
last three years in North Carolina.
She’s looking forward to being
able to take an Intro to Health
Sciences class, a new offering for
Fluvanna County schools thanks
to the hiring of Karen Grove, the
first nursing instructor Fluvanna
County schools has had since
2010.
“I want to be a vet or a nurse who
works with babies,” said Snow.
“I’m just glad she can get started
doing what she wants to do here,
while she’s young,” said her
mother.
New bus routes get mixed reviews
BY MANDY KLINE
CORRESPONDENT
Fluvanna County parents had mixed
feelings about the success of the new
bus schedules on the first day of school.
Many were upset about inconsistencies
in pickup and drop-off times, while
others were pleased with its execution.
Lauren Stewart of Lake Monticello,
expressed her concern with the lack of
reliability in the bus system. When her
six-year-old daughter got off of her bus at
5 p.m., an hour and a half later than the
scheduled drop-off time, she found her to
be physically ill. “Five and six-year-olds
were sitting on the bus for two hours in
90 degree weather,” she told the Fluvanna
Review.
Another parent, whose daughter is in
fourth grade at Carysbrook Elementary
School, was waiting at the same stop
as Stewart, near Beach Two in Lake
Monticello. When the bus pulled up, she
was informed that her child was not on
the bus and had actually been waiting
for her mother at school for the past two
hours.
“We knew coming in that there was
a lot of angst around the new schools,
but I felt that based on what I had been
hearing that the school board and school
system had it all under control,” she the
parent who asked that her name not be
used. “Yesterday [Monday] it was clear
that they did not.”
Many, however, were pleased with the
transportation on the first day of school.
Of 35 comments on the Fluvanna Review’s
Facebook page, about half were positive.
“We are the last stop and our bus came at
exactly 7:27, the posted time. I was very
impressed!” wrote Danielle Des Rochers
Lewandowski.
“Right on time to the fourth bus stop,
my house,” wrote Aimee Wiersma. “Not
bad for a new route and new bus driver
to the area.”
Tom Patrick, director of operations
for Fluvanna County public schools,
emailed parents Monday night (Aug. 13)
explaining the difficulties that come with
trying out a new system for the first time.
“With 6 schools this year rather than 5,
new grade configurations, and different
school start times, the transportation
department had to make changes and
revisions to the majority of the bus
routes,” wrote Patrick. “We will make
every effort to look into the concerns
that have been communicated to us, and
ask for your patience and understanding
during this process this first week of
school.”
Building new schools is often a controversial process as proven by this 1957 clipping from the Charlottesville paper.
