GROWING AND THRIVING TOGETHER 2014 COMMUNITY BENEFIT REPORT CENTRAL COAST YMCA Strengthening the Central Coast Community for over 100 years www.centralcoastymca.org Dear Friends, In December 2013, our Board of Directors approved a new strategic plan, with our number one goal to grow membership. This was important for two reasons. First, our mission is to improve the lives of people in our communities and we believe the more people we reach, the stronger and healthier our community becomes. Positively affecting people’s lives is our cause. The second reason allows us to meet our cause; growth improves our financial viability so we can do more. Our growth plan included many specific strategies and we are pleased to report that yes indeed, we did see significant growth in 2014. The number of Y members grew by 22% over 2013; the number of all people involved in the Y grew to 28,500, a 14% growth and overall revenue grew by 7%. Program partnerships expanded, as well. We started a new partnership in Pajaro with the Community Service District, managing all program activities at the newly constructed Pajaro Park. Over 500 children participated in sports, fitness classes and day camps during the first year. It exceeded our expectations. We continued working in Alisal offering swim lessons to prevent drowning, Big Sur offering day camp to reduce summer learning loss and started a new day camp in Gonzales in partnership with the Gonzales School District. We are excited about the future as we launch strategies related to our second goal of expanding our role in chronic disease prevention. We are working on new partnerships to prevent diabetes and help more people have access to physical activity. Our work does not happen without your support and for that, we are sincerely grateful. Thank you for helping the Y develop successful youth, support healthy living and help all people live fulfilling lives. Sincerely yours, Barbara McGaughey President & CEO Dr. Deneen Guss Chair, Board of Directors 2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Dr. Deneen Guss, Chair Adrienne Laurent, Secretary Valerie Schlothauer, Treasurer Robert Bianchi, Past Chair Tama Bistrian Terry Feinberg Terrie Fuentes Jacklyn Graham Sam Horn Jesse Lopez Tom McAuliffe Kelly McMillin Karen Miller Claudia Pizarro-Villalobos Joe Quijada Keith Severson Clark Watkins OUR AREAS OF FOCUS OUR MISSION YOUTH DEVELOPMENT All kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, under the guidance of adults who care about them and believe in their potential. We see every interaction with young people as an opportunity for learning and development. HEALTHY LIVING Health and well-being are all about balance. That's why we help people and families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind and body in their everyday lives. By helping kids, adults, families and seniors from all backgrounds improve their health and well-being, we build a stronger community. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY With our doors open to all, we work every day to connect people from all backgrounds and support those who need us most. We take on the most urgent needs in our community and inspire a spirit of service in return. Our members, volunteers and staff demonstrate the power of what we can achieve by giving back together. FINANCIAL AND OPERATIONAL INFORMATION The Central Coast YMCA embraces the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, with a mission to strengthen community through programs that develop youth, support healthy living and foster social responsibility. He wondered what it was like in the building where he saw boys and girls running in with swimsuits and basketballs. He managed to convince his mom, Audrina to take him into the building ‘just to see what it was like’. As soon as he walked in, he knew he wanted to be there every day. He saw kids playing basketball in the gym, reading in the kids zone and learning to swim in the pool. His mom was worried that they might not be able to afford it since his dad Jose Sr. was just laid off of work. Luckily, our membership staff was able to offer Audrina and Jose financial assistance towards a family membership. For the first time, Jose feels like he has something to look forward to after school and he is looking forward to his first ever summer camp. HEALTHY LIVING Diane’s Story 85% OF FAMILIES IN HEALTHY FAMILY HOME 100 ENHANCE® FITNESS MEMBERS 28,518 ACHIEVED AT LEAST 150 MINUTES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PER WEEK INDIVIDUAL HEALTHY LIVING PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS Diane started visiting the Watsonville YMCA in 1990. She needed a way to get in shape after the birth of her baby but didn’t want to be surrounded by people who would make her feel uncomfortable and judge her appearance. It’s now 2015 and Diane lost those 50 pounds of baby weight a long time ago. Her daughter learned to swim at the Watsonville Y pool and her younger daughter (born while she was a member at the Y), took part in their LeadersIn-Training program during summer camp. Every time Diane sees a prospective member taking a tour, she says ‘You’ll love it here!’ because it’s the way she has felt for over 25 years. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY 19,614 HOURS CONTRIBUTED BY VOLUNTEERS ALL ALONG THE CENTRAL COAST YOUTH IN THE Y'S AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM 1 PARTICIPATE IN SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT EACH MONTH $316,424 AWARDED IN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Mark’s Story I volunteer for the YMCA because I believe the mission is valuable to our community. I believe the programs work to help youth and families build better values, and healthier bodies and minds. I believe the youth programs give at-risk youth, alternatives that are needed to build self-esteem and teach them positive values. I am a member because I believe it is important to give back to the organization that gives good value to our community. I think my personal experience at the Y helps me be a more effective volunteer. THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS Over 800 individuals and businesses helped kids and families achieve improved well-being through the Y in 2014.
