Skovgaard depicting the view from Monte Pincio in Rome – a favourite destination for the Danish Golden Age painters. French landscape artist Eugène-Louis Boudin takes us to the coast of Brittany near the town of Plougastel in one of the earliest examples of French plein air paintings. The very large exquisite Indian ceiling painting of the sun god Surya surrounded by the eight planets, was created for ”The British Empire Exhibition” in Wembley in 1924. Our antiques department has a rare Kastrup faience tray table from the legendary Danish faience factory that existed from 1754–1794. We look forward to welcoming you to the preview at Bredgade! Paint à Paris on 1827 L. Aumont". The parents of Antoine Bournonville were an actor and a dancer. Antoine was 9 years old when he started to dance ballet in Vienna where his sister was a solo dancer. He made a good impression whenever he danced and the Swedish king Gustav III offered him a job in Stockholm. For 10 years he worked in Sweden. After the king's death in 1792 Antoine was offered a job in Copenhagen as a solo dancer at The Royal Danish Ballet. He was in love with the Danish actress and ballet dancer Mariane Jensen (1767-1797) so it was very convenient for him to move to Denmark. Mariane was his first wife and mothered 3 children. On the reverse of the Lovisa portrait: “Louisa Bournonville født Sundberg (August B's Moder) f. d. 25 Fbr 1779 d. d. 10 April 1859. Malt i Kbhn af L. Aumont 1830". Lovisa was his housekeeper and became his second wife in 1816. They had 4 children. The most famous was August Bournonville (1805-1879) whose ballets still today place Denmark and The Royal Danish Ballet on the map of the world. Captain Pym commanded his fleet to attack the embedded frigates but the battle ended in a disaster for the British fleet. In this painting several frigates are seen: HMS Sirius is on fire, HMS Nereide who gave herself up to the French and the French frigates Bellone, Minerve and Ceylon. 14 anton melbye b. copenhagen 1818, d. In 1810 a French squadron of frigates succeeded in defeating a similar English squadron in the Battle at Grand Port, Île de France (today Mauritius). The battle was fought from the 20th to the 27th of August, where the British squadron of four frigates under the command of Captain Samuel Pym, tried to block up the harbour by luring the Frenchmen into the low water near Île de la Passe. The French painter of marines, Pierre Julien Gilbert, has painted a similar scene, today at the Musée National de la Marine in Paris. Nivaagaards Malerisamling (Nivaagaard's Collection of Paintings) owns a nearly identical painting with the same measurements. Dated 1861. In 1854-1855 with his wife where he met two friends, the art historian N. L. Høyen and the painter Wilhelm Marstrand and his wife Grethe. The second time was in 1869 after the death of Georgia travelling with his painter friends Wilhelm Marstrand and Adolph Kittendorff. Many of Skovgaards paintings with Italian scenes are painted when he was back in Denmark. In the present painting not only his wife is seen, but also their two sons Niels and Joakim who actually did not visit Italy with their parents. It is a kind of wishful thinking. A companion piece to "View from Monte Pincio in Rome" is known. It shows a procession with the Pope, this one too with a fantastic view from Monte Pincio over Rome and St. Peter's Basilica. It's whereabout is not known. Reproduced in the exhibition catalogue: "Danmark dejligst- P. C. Skovgaard - Guldalderen revurderet", 2010 p. 155. The place was visited by the painters Constant Troyon, Jean Francois Millet, Jean Baptiste Isabey and Thomas Couture. They encouraged him to become a painter. He went to Paris to study and soon he started to live there more permanently. Boudin often travelled back to Normandy and Brittany to paint. He was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors (plein air). In 1856/57 Boudin met the young Claude Monet, they became lifelong friends and Monet later paid tribute to Boudin's early influence. The story behind this painting is the following: On the 26th of June 1848 during the war between Germany and Denmark there was a fight between dragoon Andkjær and commander, Count Reichenbach from Bavaria. The count fired his gun but didn't hit the dragoon, who chased him down. Reichenbach was seriously wounded. Andkjær felt pity for him and brought him to a farm, where the wounds were bandaged. Andkjær visited his "enemy" while he was recovering, as seen in this painting. Many years later in 1863 Count Reichenbach visited the poor dragoon and invited Andkjær to come and stay with him in Bavaria, but Andkjær was faithful to his fatherland and stayed in Denmark. Christian Skredsvig was one of Norway's most important painters. This painting comes from a late part of this experienced artist's life, namely the Eggedal period (1894-1924). The picture differs in interesting ways somewhat from Skredsvig's many other works due to the strong use of colours and energetic brushstrokes. Skredsvig touched this way of painting already in 1891-1892, where he was in Southern France together with Edvard Munch. Several works in his sketchbook from this trip show this, which is mentioned by MA. Ingrid Reed Thomsen in her article "Skredsvig og Munch på Rivieraen 1891-1892" (Kunst og Kultur (Arts and Culture), 1999 no. 3, volume 82, p. 170171). These sketches show in conjunction 100 72 818_antik_s08-107_painting.indd 72 BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREdgAdE AUcTION 818 01/02/11 19.38 101 with the present painting that Skredsvig was more inspired by the artistic development around 1900 than research to date has shown. Gladstone Solomon, “The Bombay Revival of Indian Art” (A descriptive account of the Indian Room constructed and decorated by the Staff and Students of the School of Art), c. 1926/27. Provenance: Toynbee-Clarke Interiors Ltd., London (1969). This gigantic work was conceived and executed under the guidance of W. E. Gladstone Solomon, Director at the Sir J. J. School of Art of Bombay, by students at the School of Art of Bombay. The school opened in 1857 through the help of a donation by Jamsetji Jeejeebhai. The following artist names are related to the work, but apparently it is not known, who painted what: Mr A. A. Bhonsule, Mr S. Fernandiz, Mr G. H. Nagarkar, Mr N. L. Joshi, Mr A. S. Khan, Mr A. Kampadalli, Mr B. A. Apte and Mr B. Hatulkar, who as the only one is known to have designed and painted the four triangles. The painted ceiling and frieze was especially tailored for The Indian Room at The British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, Middlesex in 1924. The Indian Room as a whole was constructed and decorated by the students of the School of Art of Bombay. The room measured 18 feet square and 10 feet high, it was constructed of Malabar teak and all departments of the School contributed: painters, potters, silversmiths, carpet-weavers, wood-carvers etc. The Indian Room took 9 months to create and the first thing to attract the attention of the visitor must have been the impressive ceiling that is now being offered for sale. The British Empire Exhibition of 1924 and 1925 was a colonial exhibition, a type of international exhibition intended to boost trade and bolster popular support for the various colonial empires during the New Imperialism period, which started in the 1880ies. It was opened by King George V on St George’s Day, 23 April 1924. The British Empire contained 58 countries at that time, and only Gambia and Gibraltar did not take part. It cost £12 million and was the largest exhibition ever staged anywhere in the world - it attracted 27 million visitors. Its official aim was “to stimulate trade, strengthen bonds that bind mother Country to her Sister States and Daughters, to bring into closer contact the one with each other, to enable all who owe allegiance to the British flag to meet on common ground and learn to know each other”. Maxwell Ayrton was the architect for the project. The three main buildings were the Palaces of Industry, Engineering and Arts. A special railway loop line and station were built, to connect the site to London Marylebone station. Most of the exhibition halls were intended to be temporary and demolished afterwards, but at least the Palace of Engineering and the British Government Pavilion survived into the 1970ies. The Empire Pool became the Wembley Arena, and at the suggestion of the chair of the exhibition committee, Scotsman Sir James Stevenson, the Empire Stadium was kept; it became Wembley Stadium, the home of Football in England until 2002 when it was demolished to be replaced by a new stadium. Girodet's famous painting "The burial of Atala" with the measurements 207 x 267 cm is owned by the Louvre and was on the cover of the exhibition catalogue for a Girodet exhibition in 2005-2006. An exhibition where the forgotten genius of one of the greatest painters of the early 19th century was rediscovered. That painting was first exhibited at The Salon in 1808. BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREdgAdE AUcTION 818 818_antik_s08-107_painting.indd 89 The motif for "The burial of Atala" comes from Chateaubriand's novel "Atala, ou les amours de deux sauvages dans le désert" from 1801. The story about Atala is a classical love story like "Romeo and Juliet". It takes place in Louisiana and tells about the hopeless love between the Christian girl Atala and the young Natchez Indian Chactas. The end of the novel describes the moment where the missionary Pére Aubry and Chactas bury the dead Atala. This motif was popular among the painters of the time, as seen in the present work. Atala poisoned herself in despair, because of the vow of chastity she had given, which made it impossible for her to fulfill her love to Chactas. Provenance: Previously in the possession of the painter Kristian Zahrtmann and later in his family. The furniture is presumed to have been made by Copenhagen cabinetmaker Johan Joakim Pengel, or his workshop, born in Brandenburg on 14 January 1752, citizen of Copenhagen 1776, died in 1819. The desk and dressing table was made c. 1796, as a similar piece of furniture bears a label from this year. The Intarsia work was possibly carried out by the Roentgen workshop in Neuwied and imported to Copenhagen. There are currently four known pieces signed by Pengel two exquisitely decorated dressing tables and two bureaus. The desk and dressing table is a piece of furniture in the English style. Both its shape and ingenious design BRUUN RASMUSSEN BREDGADE AUCTION 818 818_antik_s108-171_mobler.indd 151 have been copied by Pengel from The Cabinet-Makers London Book of Prices, published in 1793.
