Missing Link September 2011 - Junior League of Arlington
Volume XXIV, Issue 1 The Missing Link SEPTEMBER 2011 From the President’s Desk It’s September and time to begin a new JLA year! The year will be filled with new experiences as well as our long-standing traditions. Various committees have been hard at work this summer to ensure a dynamic, engaging and meaningful year together. The Admissions Committee organized a social in July at WineStyles for prospective new members and kicked off the Provisional class with a full day retreat in early August. On Saturday, August 20th, the Backto-School Fair was held and ALL of the backpacks went to children of AISD! All the members of JLA have worked hard this summer whether on a committee or serving in the community and I want to extend my thanks. You may recall we asked for member’s input on how to make your JLA experience more meaningful and we heard you! In order to be efficient with your time, there are a few new and exciting opportunities this year. Special points of interest: ∗ Learn the new day and venue for the Tee It Up For Charity Golf Tournament. ∗ Find out how you can help the Permanent Endowment Fund. ∗ Get your calendars ready for the Journey Through Fall. ∗ Your work is making a difference. Read the Community Thank You Letters. For the General Meetings, we will incorporate training, business and community service. For the September General Meeting, Jacqueline Lambiase, a professor at TCU will be showing us how to promote Junior League in everything we do. This will count as a training credit and General Meeting credit. To incorporate community service, the Education Committee is asking everyone to bring canned foods to the meeting in September. The cans will serve as our centerpieces for the meeting and will be donated to a local food pantry. Appetizers will be provided at each meeting for everyone at no charge. As you know, cash donations are always accepted. The Community Vice-President (April Ott) and your Member-at -Large (Mendi Schutte) have been working this summer to find meaningful ways we can serve our community. Some will be incorporated into the meetings and others will be additional opportunities that can be done in a day. Whatever you have committed to do this year for Junior League, whether it’s volunteering in the community, working on a fundraiser or providing administrative support, it’s through your dedication that we continue to make an impact on the Arlington community. It is an honor and privilege to serve YOU, the Junior League and our community this year. Paulette Paulette Tutor, President 2011-2012 Back-to-School Fair Helps AISD Students Prepare for New School Year The 2011 Back-to-School Fair successfully completed its mission to provide much needed backpacks to 1000 students from Arlington Independent School District (AISD). More than 20 JLA members, friends, and family worked shifts to direct families to community resources, backpack distribution areas, and AISD provided transportation. AISD Superintendent Jerry McCullough stopped by to thank everyone who participated. Six schools benefited in the event: Knox, Crow, Berry, Rankin, Atherton, and Blanton. A special thanks to the committee members for another successful Back-to-School Fair: Chair, Andrea Chavez. Asst. Chair, Julie Reinhardt. Sustaining Advisor, Lauren Tatum. Members, Rachel Gordon, Mary Spears, Theresa Austin, Valerie McDonald, and Rocky Jones. What a perfect combination of civic leadership, professional development and “grown-up” fun. It gives me a sense of pride to reflect on our efforts over the years and to think about the many new friends I can always count on. One of my favorite memories of JLA was my provisional year on Bargain Barn. I was on the transportation committee which meant that I would drive around with other provisionals and pick up people's LARGE donations. We laughed and giggled every time we went to someone's house for a pick up because we definitely did not look like we had the strength to move some of the items. Fortunately we made every pick up and found a new home for them all. Like us on Facebook 9 Junior League of Arlington www.jlarlington.org September 2011 Permanent Endowment Fund Has More Than One Way to Give Established in 1995, the Permanent Endowment Fund (the “Fund”) was created to eventually provide a perpetual Fund that would produce income for the repair, maintenance, and improvement of the Center for Community Service, JLA’s largest permanent project. Generally, permanent endowments for charitable organizations like JLA invest and retain their principle amount forever and merely spend the income for their given purposes. Individuals usually make donations to endowment funds BECAUSE they believe the organization is “doing great things and is an important long-term component of the community”. Currently, JLA’s Fund is capitalized at $73,000. The capital was raised primarily through the generous donations of JLA members and the fundraising activities proposed and approved by the Fund trustees. Any donation to JLA not designated to a specific cause, goes toward the Fund. This year, the Fund’s committee will be actively raising capital through the following means: •Dining for PEF Dollars – Quarterly restaurant dining events where the restaurant donates a portion of net sales proceeds from the event day to JLA. •Promotion of year end, tax deductible giving to JLA. Check with your employer to see if they match donations. •Sale of Mother’s Day cards to honor the special mothers in our lives. •Estate beneficiary – encourage members to consider making a gift through estate planning or to include JLA as a one of the beneficiaries of their IRA, 401K or life insurance policy. • Honorary memorials – donations to the Fund made in honor or memory of someone special. Why spend money on flowers when you can honor their memory by providing lasting support to our community? • Become a member of “iGive” when making purchases through Facebook. iGive.com provides its free services to its members, one or more of whom have listed Junior League of Arlington and chosen to support JLA by donating up to 26% of their online purchases. • Link the Junior League of Arlington to your Tom Thumb reward card to have 1% of your purchases donated to the Fund. Good Neighbor Number 11713. JLA’s Procedures and Bylaws state that until the annual income on the Fund exceeds 2.5 times the building operating expenses which are approximately $40,000 each year, the corpus may not be spent. Therefore, we cannot spend from the Fund until it reaches at least $100,000. Jane Hatton is staying on as the Bunko Coordinator, and she will be surveying interested Sustainers to determine best times/dates for Bunko events. We are looking for additional host homes for upcoming JLA Sustainer events. If you are interested, please let me know. We will probably need some locations for both large and small gatherings. This year one of my goals is to increase our support to JLA – to really put more focus on the “Sustain” part of our title: “Sustainer.” Soon I will be providing details on various ways you can plug in to help out. In addition, another goal is to increase attendance and participation at our JLA Sustainer events. I’m also hoping to have some Provisional Class Reunions, so if you are interested in helping out with that please let me know ASAP. If you’re interested in reviving the Tour and Travel group, let me know. It would be awesome if someone would volunteer to head that up again. I am looking forward to an amazing and memorable year with you! The Immunization Collaboration of Tarrant County (ICTC) has worked since 1991 to provide children with immunizations needed for school. Junior League of Arlington volunteers partnered with the ICTC this summer at their low cost immunization clinics serving as assistants who helped to check in and assist families who needed immunizations for their children.
