MP 7 / 5425015559070 / label: Muziekpublique / format: CD / Various - Traditional
Muziekpublique brings together around twenty virtuosos who are refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan,
Pakistan and Tibet, who finally ended up in Belgium. The objective is to reveal talents and cultural treasures
that have become virtually invisible in Belgium. These are experienced musicians who have been trained at
some of the most prestigious music academies in the Middle East (Damascus, Baghdad, Aleppo) and who
have passed through a string of musical centers dotted along the former Silk road. Listen to one of the tracks.

Memphis-born soulstress Toni Green and European soul-blues group Malted Milk got together to be one of
st
the best kept secrets on the rhythm&blues scene these days. The result reflects a 21 century vision of soul,
a funky and bluesy mix that takes the ball rolling way beyong retro soul sounds that have been the norm for
the past few years. Live at North Sea Jazz Festival 2016! Listen to ‘Just Call Me’.
Out 27 May:
M.A.K.U. Soundsystem: Mezcla
GBCD 34 / 4030433603420 / format: CD / label: Glitterbeat / Colombia – Popular
M.A.K.U. Soundsystem: Mezcla
GBLP 34 / 4030433603413 / format: CD / label: Glitterbeat / Colombia – Popular
M.A.K.U Soundsystem is a visceral, politically charged 8-piece band based in New York City, with most of its
members hailing from Colombia. M.A.K.U draws on both traditional Afro-Colombian rhythms such as
cumbia, as well as a mosaic of other genres: afrobeat, punk, hip-hop, and jazz. "We not only take our cultures with us," says
M.A.K.U singer Liliana Conde, who immigrated to the US in 2001 and went to high school in New York, "but we also pick up on
everything that surrounds us.” Mezcla is a relentlessly honest record. The music hits the feet and the hips, powerful and
overwhelming, while the lyrics reflect the lives the band members live. There’s the giddy flirtation of a summer Saturday night on
‘Haitiana’ and the thought that comes from looking around somewhere so different and asking ‘What Do You Wish For.’ But it
also embraces darker political questions that don’t have easy answers. Listen and watch to the album teaser here.
We’re proud to announce that Xango Music will distribute the full catalogue of the Swedish jazz label Brus & Knaster.
Starting with this fine new release:
Daniel Karlsson Trio: At the Feel Free Falafel
BRUS 36 / 7350045751362 / label: Brus & Knaster / format: CD / Sweden – Jazz
Daniel Karlsson Trio: At the Feel Free Falafel
KNASTER 36 / 7350045752369 / label: Brus & Knaster / format: LP / Sweden – Jazz
The Daniel Karlsson Trio have since their album debut ‘Das Taxibat’ established themselves as one of the
most interesting constellations in Swedish jazz. Their second album won several awards, for example the Swedish Jazz Grammy
2015. Nine tracks, composed by Daniel Karlsson and performed by pianist Daniel himself, bass player Christian Spering and
drummer Fredrik Rundqvist, keep the trio’s distinctive sound very much in place. A slew of analogue synthesizers and a rare
instruments in jazz settings, the mellotron, are frequentely added to the soundscape. Listen to the teaser.

Ska-P: Live in Woodstock Festival
MR 16355 / 8436543121810 / label: Maldito Records / format: CD+DVD / Spain – Popular
The legendary Spanish punkband Ska-P played a equally legendary concert at Woodstock Festival in Poland,
2014. This festival was recorded both in sound and image. The songs are not new to their fans, but it’s the
energy, the crazyness and the massive amounts of fans that makes this concert one to remember. Ska-P
(pronounced in Spanish as eska-pe, ‘escape’) was a six-piece band from Spain, from 1994 until 2005, and
then again from 2007 until 2014. In 2014 they toured one last time with the band. The band was and is
famous for its anarchistic lyrics. This album is a nostalgic must-have for fans, and a great introduction to the
band for newcomers. Check it out!
Amalia Rodrigues: O Melhor de Amalia
CNMCD 514 / 5606265006846 / label: CNM / format: 2-CD (longbox) / Portugal – Fado
Greatest fadista of all times is featured on this special longbox edition. The first cd contains songs from the
1950s, the second cd contains songs from the 1960s. 42 beautiful songs, to enjoy or discover her music.
Various: The Story of Fado
CNMCD 530 / 5606265008048 / label: CNM / format: 2-CD (longbox) / Portugal – Fado
Travel through the history of fado with these 40 tracks: starting of course with Amalia Rodrigues, passing by
Carlos Ramos, Alfredo Marceneiro, Raul Nery, and Maria Teresa de Noronha in the 1950s and 1960s,
moving on to Jose Nunes in the 1970s and meeting new fado-stars like Ana Moura, Maria Ana Bobone,
Joana Amendoeira and many more.
Andy Gonzalez: Entre Colegas
TTR 24 / 0888295388726 / label: Truth Revolution Rec. / format: CD / US – Latin Jazz
In a career that spans almost half a century and roughly 1000 recordings as a co-leader, musical director, and
sideman, Andy Gonzalez is arguably one of the most important bass players of his generation. ‘Entre
Colegas’ is the first recording to bear Andy’s name as a leader. The repertoire offers the listener an intimate
look at Andy’s creative process and reflects his eclectic taste in music. Unlike the vast majority of his
recordings, which feature brass and horn ensembles, the music focuses on guitars, strings and Latin jazz with
folkloric elements. It is what Andy imagines as “Django Reinhardt goes to Cuba and Puerto Rico”. Listen to El
Mostro’s Alguinaldo.
Jean-Luc Thomas & Ravichandra Kulur: Magic Flutes
HIR 560078 / 3521383436738 / label: Hirustica / format: CD / Brittany-India - Fusion
Always looking for new artistical horizons, the two flute players Jean-Luc Thomas from Brittany, France, and
Ravichandra Kulur (South-India, Carnatic music) met each other at Rudolstadt festival in 2014. This was an
immediate success and happily they continued to improvise on themes of the other, resulting in this indeed
magical album. Watch a clip of the Rudolstadt performance.
Damir Imamovic: Sevdah Takht
ITMCD 2 / 0387309300018 / label: ITM / format: CD / Bosnia – Sevdah
This album was originally released in 2012, some years before the latest release of Damir Imamovic (Dvojka,
GBCD 33 / GBLP 33). Electric bass player Ivan Mihajlovic and percussionist Nenad Kovacic were already
there to travel a road less travelled with Damir. Starting point is traditional Bosnian sevdah; Damir learned this
art from his father and grandfather, both great names in this tradition. Damir not only looks to the history but
is living in the future. These musicians have an open mind and open ears, bending the definition of sevdah,
and offering a new perspective. Listen to a song.
Andre Charbonneau: Spain Flamenco Andalou
SA 141281 / 3700089412813 / label: Air Mail Music / format: CD / Spain – Flamenco
Flamenco, inscribed by Unesco on its ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’-list, attracts talented and fervent artists not
only from native Spain, but also from other countries like the French guitarist and composer André
Charbonneau. On this new recording he plays a fine tribute to Andalusia, the cradle of flamenco.
EXPECTED
Red Orange is a new record label dedicated to document inspiring music from all corners of the world.
Expected 10 June:
Kimi Djabate: Kanamalu
REDCD 1601 / 0088234590108 / label: Red Orange / format: CD / Guinea-Bissau
Kimi Djabate: Kanamalu
REDLP 1601 / 0088234590115 / label: Red Orange / format: LP / Guinea-Bissau
Kimi was born in a musical family in Guinea-Bissau, starting to play the balaphon at the age of three, learning
kora, guitar and traditional drums as a teenager. He was trained in traditional Mandingo music, but was also
interested in popular musical style from Guinea-Bissau gumbé, afrobeat, morna from Cabo Verde and western jazz and blues.
When he moved to Portugal in his twenties his musical career took a next step into professionalization. After two albums in 2005
and 2009 this third album followed, covering themes ranging from political and social issues to emotions and the importance of
family. Balaphon still has its central place in the songs.

Expected 10 June:
Claudia Aurora: Mulher do Norte
REDCD 1602 / 0088234590139 / label: Red Orange / format: CD / Portugal – Fado
Claudia Aurora: Mulher do Norte
REDLP 1602 / 0088234590146 / label: Red Orange / format: LP / Portugal – Fado
Claudia Aurora has named her second album ‘Mulher do Norte’, woman of the north. Although this may refer
to the city of Porto, where she originally comes from and not the home town of fado Lisbon, this may as well
refer to the place where she moved more than 10 years ago: the UK. This is where she started singing fado, first as an antidote
against homesickness in her own kitchen; later, her first album just a few months old, at Womad in 2012, and many other
concerts. Aurora writes her own songs, songs of saudade, of loss, love and longing. The emotion she communicates is not blue,
necessarily, but visceral. A melancholic ecstasy, a life forever lived, no matter where her home.
Expected 10 June:
Elza Soares: The Woman at the End of the World
MAISCD 31 / 5052442009047 / label: Mais Um Discos / format: CD / Brazil - Urban
Brazilian music icon Elza Soares has teamed up with the cream of São Paulo's avant-garde musicians for an
st
album of apocalyptic, experimental samba sujo (‘dirty samba’) that tackles the burning issues of 21 century
th
Brazil: racism, domestic violence, sex and drug addiction. This is Elza’s 34 studio album and her first to
feature previously unrecorded material, exclusively composed for her. Over a sprawl of distorted guitars,
squalling horns, taught strings and electronic shards, samba is savaged by rock ‘n’ roll, free-jazz, noise and
other musical forms as Elza sings, spits and screams tales of a life in Brazil that is anything but a tropical
paradise. Listen to a track here.
Expected 24 June:
Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra: Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra
GBCD 35 / 4030433603529 / label: Glitterbeat / format: CD / Africa/Haiti – Voodoo
Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra: Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra
GBLP 35 / 4030433603512 / label: Glitterbeat / format: LP / Africa/Haiti – Voodoo
Seven-and-a-half thousand kilometers of cold ocean separate West Africa from Haiti. But music can cover
that distance in a heartbeat, crossing the Atlantic to reunite the rhythms and religion of people torn from their homes to be sold
into slavery on the Caribbean island. And on its self-titled album, the Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra honours those ghosts of
the past even as it walks steadfastly and hopefully into the future. Featuring: Tony Allen, Erol Josué & Sanba Zao.
