Annual Report
Building the Beloved Community Now
Gracias to Board & Staff Members
Querid@s Amig@s/Dear Friends,
2014 Staff Members:
Every day we are reminded how lucky we are to be an integral part of El Centro de la Raza. As we look back on the past year we
are amazed by the accomplishments of our incredibly dedicated hard working staff and the over 1,300 community members
who volunteer here. We are grateful for their efforts to help make the lives of our participants, friends, families and neighbors
better. At El Centro de la Raza our culture is to work hard, yet have fun at the same time, work collectively and work in multiracial unity to bring rights and resources to our communities. Everyone who seeks our help is a member of our family regardless of where they come from, how they identify or how little money they have.
Leadership Team:
Estela Ortega,
2013 was an amazing year of expansion and growth for El Centro de la Raza. A few of the many highlights include:
EXPANDED PROGRAMS! The José Martí Child Development Center expanded from 124 children ages 1-12 to 175 children! We almost doubled the number of classrooms. Thanks to United Way, the Parent-Child Home Visitor Program has
expanded allowing us to reach more families through this wonderful program.
BEING GOOD STEWARDS OF OUR HISTORIC HOME. Over $1M in new plumbing, seismic upgrades and cosmetic improvements in the José Martí Child Development Center were completed in 2013 - made possible by city, state, and federal funding and countless volunteers. This equals over $5 million in building renovations since 2005. In 2014, we will be
improving the ADA accessibility of the building.
BUILDING A PLAYGROUND FOR OUR COMMUNITY. In partnership with the City of Seattle Department of Parks and
Recreation, we completed the renovation and dedicated the Santos Rodriguez Memorial Park on the east side of our
building. It is a wonderful asset for all of the community and from opening day has been filled with children and families.
LEADING BY EXAMPLE. El Centro de la Raza would not be where it is today without advocating for social justice. We
believe in taking action. Because of our strong financials and prudent fiscal policies we were able to institute a new organization wide minimum starting wage of $15.00 per hour. We also participated in several community led initiatives including the May Day March and Latino Legislative Day in Olympia.
2014 will be begin a transformative period for the organization and plans include:
EXPANDING OUR PROGRAMMING. We have partnered with InterIm to run the child development center at Hirabayashi
Place a new mixed use affordable housing project in the International District. Four new class rooms serving approximately 64
children from racially and economically diverse families We will continue to expand our programs as the need arises and the
finances are in place have been invited by the city.
BUILDING THE BELOVED COMMUNITY. Plaza Roberto Maestas, a multi-use development on the south end of our campus,
is on track to break ground in March of 2015. The Plaza will bring 112 units of transit-oriented, affordable workforce housing,
seven classrooms for our Child Development Center, a multi-cultural community center, a public plaza, flexible retail space
including 13 start-up opportunities for local small business owners supported by ECDLR’s work around asset-building, office
space and a commercial kitchen. The project will generate over 150 construction, engineering, and design jobs during development and will create 40 or more permanent jobs once complete. This $41M project expands the capacity of El Centro de la
Raza to deliver its breadth of services and more fully address the needs of the children and families we serve. Funding for the
full $41M is 94% raised and a $3.5M Capital Campaign is the final piece of the financing picture.
You helped get us to this point and we need you to take us all the way! Please help us continue to grow and expand our mission. Donate today on our website at www.elcentrodelaraza.org via the “Donate Now” button. Roberto Maestas, our principal
founder, worked vigorously to build multi-racial unity and advocated for the most invisible and vulnerable in our community.

Volunteers Fill Unique Roles to Meet Community Needs
Mil gracias to all of our outstanding volunteers! It is with the help
of our hardworking, dedicated volunteers that El Centro de la
Raza’s programs and services run smoothly.
A number of full-time positions at El Centro de la Raza are filled
by yearlong volunteers from AmeriCorps, MLK VISTA, Lutheran
Volunteer Corps and AARP. These volunteers contributed 12,150
hours this year. El Centro de la Raza also hosted 49 volunteers as
part of service learning programs at local universities and high
schools.
Volunteer groups from Attachmate, Bank of America, Ben
Bridge, ESPN/Seattle Sounders, King County Combined Federal
Campaign, Microsoft, One Brick, Perkins Coie, Queen Anne Rotary Club, Russell Investment Group, Seattle Pacific University
CityQuest, Seattle University Faculty, Seattle University Residence Life, Seattle Works, Sound Transit, Starbucks, U. S. Bank,
and University of Washington Upward Bound contributed over
1600 hours of service in 2013.
ESPN and Seattle Sounders representatives volunteer in
honor of Latino Heritage month and bring KaBOOM play
equipment for our kids!
In 2013, 1,322 volunteers contributed 34,132 hours of volunteer service, worth $912,007. 1 Since last year, we have increased our total volunteer hours by 32%, registered 382 new volunteers, 11.5% of whom applied online using our new
online application. Of those who signed up, 91% went on to contribute volunteer hours.

Food Bank Provides Summer Employment to Youth
Meet Gloria! At age 15, she already has her first summer job at El Centro de la
Raza! Through the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), Gloria
works in our food bank 4 days per week, and helps out with the Senior Nutrition and Wellness Program during coffee hour, among an assortment of other
projects that staff assign her, such as helping out at the front desk, or providing valuable feedback on youth summer camp activities. But her favorite part,
she says, is the food bank. "I like working in the Food Bank because I like to
see people's faces light up. Sometimes people walk in to the room all depressed, and then leave happy."
The program runs from the end of the school year through August and provides employment to three youth at El Centro de la Raza. In addition to the
valuable job skills Gloria will gain during her time here this summer, she says
it’s also helping her to develop a spirit of generosity. "Usually when people ask
me for food, I say 'no'. But I realized working here that it’s important to say
'yes' as much as possible. It feels good to say 'yes', and it makes other people
feel good too." Mil gracias Gloria for your amazing commitment to building
the "beloved community."
