NPS Newsletter spring/summer2015 FINAL copy
N E W S L E T T E R T Qw Newsletter Spring/Summer 2015 From the President Dear Friends It’s very clear to me that for every bit of effort that we as a community invest in promoting our ponies that effort is returned to us a hundred-fold by the public and the media. The fact is that huge numbers of people have been ignorant about the history and uniqueness of our pony as Newfoundland and Labrador’s only heritage animal and the more they learn the more interested they become, wanting to learn more and more. This presents us as a Society with a substantial opportunity to introduce this wonderful animal to an increasing number of people. Along with this opportunity comes a responsibility for all members of our Society, pony owners and supporters to collaborate, cooperate and work together for the betterment of the pony. One of the most encouraging trends we are seeing these days is a growing interest by younger people, teachers and school children. We must grasp every chance we can to show off the ponies and continually build on the experience of dedicated Facebook Groups and voluntary organizations all across the province, other provinces of Canada and our friends in the United States. Without question this is one simple way of ensuring that the pony has a better chance for survival. Your council Members continue to work hard on your behalf. We meet on a regular monthly schedule and each elected member is doing their best to deal with the CLE NEWHOOK many opportunities and challenges that come to us. Here are a few highlights: •The Scoping Study leading towards a fullfledged Census and Enhanced Database Project is now complete and we will shortly circulate the comprehensive Phase One report to our members and pony owners. The next challenge is to identify the necessary funds to move on to the Second Phase. •Treasurer Pamela Pippy and volunteer Patrica Morrissey deserve a medal for their work on overhauling the archival material on the NL Pony that has been stored in the Provincial Archives at The Rooms. Over the long winter months they’ve toiled mightily at culling out duplicates, re-organized the materials into binders and copied most of the important materials into a digital format as a back-up to the hard copies and for easier access in the future. Many thanks to Pam and Patricia! •As was posted on our web recently our A committee has been struck under the Registrar has fixed a long-standing error • leadership of Jessica Boyd to organize a that she discovered in the Registry workshop and social event for pony database. Here’s a sample of what has been hitting the air waves: Two Newfoundland Pony stallions, born and reared at Fiddler’s Green Stable in Three Rivers, Michigan are in new breeding homes in Canada. Squid Jiggin’ A.R. Scammel is at Tin Star Farm, owned by Jodie Desmarais, of Nova Scotia. The second stallion, Mister Jiggs, is going to Stephanie Coates Stable in CBS, NL. Both ponies were owned by Lloyd and Cindy Mehaney. Lloyd who hails from Newfoundland used to regale his wife Cindy and two daughters with stories of Newfoundland ponies back home, and especially his family’s pony called Darky. They decided to buy 2 stallions and 3 mares, and started a breeding program at Fiddlers Green. One stallion was important foundation pony, Champion K., who sired Mister Jiggs. All the footage has been shot on a variety of locations in the province, pther areas of Canada and the US. The documentary is now being edited by the director/producer Christopher Richardson. “Editing some 60 hours of raw footage is an arduous and time-consuming task”, said NPS president Cle Newhook, “and requires a great deal of creative talent to turn the footage into a final product”. ”I’ve seen and appreciated Christopher’s other documentary work” Cle said, “and I’ve had a chance to see some of the footage on this project. “I’m quite sure that viewers will be moved by this story, and by the superb cinematography and in fact it will be something that people will want to watch more than once”. The broadcast date will be posted as soon as it is announced by the CBC Regional Office. ______________________________________________________________________________ Send us your news for our Fall/Winter edition.
