leading independent source of

quality ratings, recognized Southwest
General with their Emergency
Medicine Excellence Award for the second consecutive
year in 2011. Southwest General was the only west side
hospital in Cuyahoga County to receive this national
ranking. HealthGrades recognized Southwest General
with the award again in 2012.
Achieving the Gold Standard in Heart Failure Treatment
Recognized Among the Best in Cancer Care
Southwest General was named a Heart Failure
Gold Quality Achievement Award recipient in 2011. This
award from the American Heart Association recognizes
excellence in the treatment of patients with heart failure
by adhering to proven guidelines that improve outcomes,
prevent future hospitalizations and prolong life.
University Hospitals (UH) Seidman Cancer Center at
Southwest General was re-accredited in 2011, receiving
“Three Year Accreditation with Commendation” from
the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American
College of Surgeons. This accreditation recognizes
the comprehensive, quality cancer care provided by
Southwest General.
Heart Failure and Primary Stroke Center
Recertifications
Breast Center Earns National Recognition
Southwest General again earned The Joint
Commission Heart Failure Certification and Joint
Commission Primary Stroke Center Certification for
its dedication to, and continuous compliance with, the
national standards for health care quality and safety in the
areas of heart failure and stroke. These recertifications
mean that Southwest General is a hospital where patients
can expect excellent outcomes from treatment.
The Breast Center at Southwest General was named
a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American
College of Radiology. This designation means that the
Center’s physicians, technologists and other personnel
have received enhanced training in the latest procedures
and techniques. For patients, it means that they will
receive an exceptional level of care from experienced
professionals, using advanced diagnostic and state-ofthe art imaging equipment.

Building for the Future of Healthcare
Through our Facilities Expansion Project we are committed to enhancing
the emergency and patient care facilities at Southwest General to meet the
comprehensive needs of the surrounding communities we serve. The twophase project will be supported by philanthropic contributions, bond financing
and cash on-hand.
Phase One’s Emergency Department/Critical Care and Parking Structure
will accommodate the 60,000+ anticipated emergency visits by area residents
of all ages, races and income levels. It will be a state-of-the-art emergency
medicine facility, designed to maximize patient comfort, privacy and safety.
Phase Two’s new Patient Bed Tower will provide Southwest with
modernized private rooms for an enhanced patient and family experience.
Beautiful scenic views from the local Metroparks will add to the quiet healing
environment and improve patient satisfaction.

Building A Strong Team of Volunteers
At the heart of our fund-raising efforts lies an ever-growing network of volunteers whose dedicated time, talents,
and energy combine to make a significant difference at Southwest General.
We are fortunate to have a rich and diverse team of dynamic and engaged people whose support and meaningful
contributions join to advance the goals of Southwest Community Health Foundation.
In 2011, our volunteers collectively devoted over 800 hours to serve on our seven active committees. These hours
do not take into account activity that was contributed outside of these organized meetings. In addition, many of our
volunteers also donated products and services, and pledged financial support.
The tireless commitment of our volunteers helped the Foundation succeed to raise over $3.1 million dollars total
attainment in 2011, and to further promote the mission and vision of Southwest General.

Expressing Gratitude
At the end of January, Jim Sopko of Strongsville went to Southwest for
what he thought was going to be a routine endoscopy procedure. Upon
his initial examination, the staff found his heart to be beating irregularly
and immediately had him admitted into the hospital.

At 6:00 a.m. the following morning, a staff member of Southwest
General phoned his wife informing her that Jim had taken a turn for the
worse. They told her that she needed to get to the hospital as soon as
she could. It seemed Jim had gone into septic shock. Septic shock is a
serious condition of a lethal drop in blood pressure due to the presence of
bacteria in the blood.
The exceptional staff at Southwest diagnosed Jim with a perianal
abscess and performed surgery to insert a drain. Because of the
seriousness of his illness, he was put into a coma-induced state and
prescribed infection-fighting medication. Jim remained on life support, in
the Critical Care Unit, for three weeks while doctors and nurses continued
to work to improve his condition.
Jim was told that nearly 60% of people never recover from sepsis.
“Southwest saved my life and for that I am grateful. They have a super
team of doctors. I think I saw 34 of them over the 27 days I was in the
CCU. We are fortunate to have such a great hospital right in our own
backyard. I am happy to be alive.” The Grateful Patient Program is
designed as a way for our patients and their loved ones to recognize the
extraordinary and sometimes life-saving care they receive at Southwest.
It provides a means for people like Jim to express his gratitude and
appreciation to the physicians, nurses, or entire departments by making a
contribution in their honor and to give back to those who may have given
so much to them.

Society by including Southwest General as
a beneficiary in your will or trust agreement,
beneficiary of retirement assets, insurance policy
or other financial accounts or by establishing a
Southwest General Charitable Gift Annuity.
The Sprague Haven Society symbolizes the
strength and fortitude of the founding community
citizens who rallied to raise $100,000 in 10 days
to build a 32-bed hospital in Berea, Ohio (the
future Southwest General Hospital). For five
years, until completion of the new hospital,
patients were cared for in Sprague Haven, an
eight-bed facility established in a home formerly
owned by a Berea family.
