But when they met, they likely had no idea that they would become business partners. After attending technical college, the two started going out on service calls together. Through friends, family, and word of mouth, they quickly became busy and decided to start their own company. Rob and Scott gradually grew their customer list and founded S&R Heating, Cooling & Appliance Repair in 1984. Now the duo has more than three decades of experience providing heating, cooling, and appliance sales, service, and installation for both residential and commercial properties. S&R provides superior maintenance and repair services for furnaces, air conditioners, thermostats, air exchangers, humidifiers, and fireplaces, and specializes in zoning, wi-fi enabled thermostats, and high-efficiency equipment. The company also offers 24-hour emergency service. “We don’t just want to install a furnace or air conditioner,” Rob says. “We want to make peoples’ homes comfortable. We work like it’s our own home—like it’s our Picasso.” S&R takes special care in selecting its team members. Each technician is trained to do quality work and spends months riding along with Scott and Rob on service calls before responding to calls on their own. Over the years, S&R has become one of the area’s most trusted and recognized heating and cooling experts. “I love doing what I do,” Rob says. “I think my gift is solving problems and helping to make things better—and that’s exactly what I get to do.” S&R is a Bryant Factory Authorized dealer and has received the Medal of Excellence Award three times—a top industry honor. Known by customers for their quality work and dedication, S&R has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, is a recipient of the Angie’s List Super Service Award, and was a winner in the 2015 Best of Woodbury Awards. Looking back, Scott and Rob know that the way they started S&R wasn’t an accident. “It’s actually a true blessing that we get to what we love to do,” Rob says. WOODBURYMAG.COM 05 editor’s note WELCOME TO THE BEST OF WOODBURY 2016! We are pleased to present this special 13th issue of Woodbury Magazine that celebrates the people, places, businesses and events that make Woodbury such a wonderful and connected community. One of the things our editorial team likes best about this issue is the fact that we really don’t do this alone; it is our readers who are the driving force behind the stories we tell on these pages. As you know, the Best of Woodbury finalists and winners are selected solely by our readers (more about that on page 8), and it’s your votes that determine the individuals our writers contact to interview for the mini-profiles in each category and the images our photographers capture to illustrate the best of what Woodbury has to offer. These are the profiles of your community favorites, and we are happy to share their engaging stories. On these pages, you’ll read about Best of Woodbury repeat winners and newcomers, dedicated business owners and helpful service people. We add a solid dose of fun to each Best of Woodbury issue as we also feature our readers’ favorite foods, drinks, shops and much more. Additionally, Woodbury Magazine editor Debbie Musser has made several Editor’s Picks which identify a few special people and businesses. For this issue of the Best of Woodbury, we’ve devoted more space to telling their stories than we have in past years. We’ve also updated the Restaurant section of this issue; rather than recap dishes featured in the magazine in 2015, we are shining a spotlight on Angela Verrastro of Angelina’s Kitchen to find out more about this popular Woodbury spot (page 44). You’ll also find a seasonal calendar of Woodbury events that illustrates how vibrant and active this community is when it comes to the arts, entertainment, the outdoors and more (page 46). And finally, we tip our hat to another choice made by our readers with our Last Glance page that spotlights the winning photo (and photographer) in the readers’ choice category of the 2015 Woodbury Magazine Focus on Woodbury photo contest. As many of you know, we did not host a Best of Woodbury event this year, so all finalists and winners are finding out the results of the online survey right along with readers. If you are a Best of Woodbury winner, please see page 9 to find out how you can order a custom framed print of this year’s cover listing your winning result. Next time you’re out and about in Woodbury and spot one of these awards in a shop or business, know that your fellow community members (and maybe even you, too) have recognized the recipient for a job well done. Enjoy this issue and let us know what you think at woodburymag@tigeroak.com. We welcome and value feedback from our readers all year long. Congratulations, Woodbury! WOODBURYMAG.COM 07 faq BY JULIE PFITZINGER Woodbury Magazine OUR COMMUNITY / OUR MAGAZINE BEST OF WOODBURY 2014 OUR COMM UNITY / OU R MAGAZIN E Best of The woodburymag.com 2015 Details, Details Learn all you need to know about the Best of Woodbury readers’ choice competition. HOW ARE THE CATEGORIES SELECTED? Each year, the editorial and management teams evaluate our list of categories for the Best of Woodbury survey, usually eliminating a few of the less popular ones— where fewer people voted—and adding new topics to keep things fresh. And of course, we always take into account feedback from our readers; we appreciate hearing from you about categories you’d like to see added or nixed. This year, we featured 38 categories, and also included some expanded Editor’s Picks, which recognize special individuals and businesses in the community. HOW ARE BALLOTS CAST? From October 1 through October 31, 2015, we invited readers to go online to woodburymag.com to tell us their favorites in the selected categories. As in past years, it was a write-in ballot with no pre-selected choices from the editorial staff. We truly rely on readers to decide on the finalists and winners in each category. WHAT ARE THE VOTING RULES? Once voting closed on October 31, our editorial and management teams began the challenging task of tabulating the results. To make the process efficient and fair, we do adhere to a few rules as we count the votes. » Readers cannot vote more than once from the same IP address. Each device— phone, computer, tablet—has its own IP address. We automatically eliminate any additional votes from an IP address to control any possibility of ballot-stuffing. » Readers must vote in a minimum of 5 categories for their ballot to be considered valid; ballots with votes in fewer than 5 categories are eliminated. 08 BEST OF WOODBURY 2016 Again, this is to obtain a fair representation of selections by readers. » The top three vote-getters in each category become finalists, and the top vote-getter is the winner. At this point, our editorial team fact checks the address and contact information for each finalist—if the finalist is no longer a valid selection due to a closed business, etc., we then move to the next highest vote-getter, who then becomes a finalist. » On January 4, 2016, we posted all of the finalists at woodburymag.com. On April 15, the winners in each category were announced online and this special issue was mailed to readers, polybagged with the May 2016 issue of Woodbury Magazine. WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT THE BEST OF WOODBURY? Community-centric: Occasionally, we get questions from readers about the inclusion on the finalist list of a business that is located just outside of Woodbury Magazine’s coverage area. In order to qualify as a finalist in the Best of Woodbury survey, the business or individual must be located in the community and/or provide services to Woodbury residents. Spreading the word: Just as we advertise the Best of Woodbury voting in our print publications, online, and through Facebook and Twitter, it’s also become very common for local businesses, individuals and others to do the same and encourage their clients, fans and friends to cast a vote for them in a particular Best of Woodbury category. We love seeing the enthusiasm for the Best of Woodbury survey from members of the local community! Winning ways: Although we didn’t host a Best of Woodbury event this year, each winner has the option of purchasing a framed copy of this year’s Best of Woodbury cover design, which indicates the winning category and their business name (see page 9). In addition, they receive a “Best of 2016” icon, perfect for marketing and promotional materials. I’m a winner! How do I purchase a framed cover? Winners can request a free digital copy of their award, a free window cling, a free Best of Woodbury logo to post on their website or in signature emails, and can purchase a framed award certificate. The framed award certificate is 14 x 17 inches and features a black wood frame. The cost is $75 per framed award certificate and includes shipping and handling. For more information on how to place an order, please visit woodburymag.com. WOODBURYMAG.COM 09 t s e B of Best the From the well-established to new kids on the block, here are your picks for the Best of Woodbury 2016. BY DEBBIE MUSSER AND MARGARET PENDLETON 10 BEST OF WOODBURY 2016 2016 W hen Woodbury residents voted to incorporate a major-council form of government in 1967, the population was 4,396. Fast forward 49 years to 2016, as our population is now estimated at 68,725 (and that number is always changing). Woodbury is now the largest city in Washington County and a leader not only in the east metro, but across the Twin Cities and beyond, with a Chamber of Commerce that is one of the fastest-growing in the nation. There are so many great places, people and things that make Woodbury a special place to live and work in. For the 11th year running, we’ve turned to you, the devoted readers of Woodbury Magazine, to nominate and vote for the best our fair city has to offer. We are proud to reveal your top picks, from restaurants and medical clinics to home experts and places to shop. Sprinkled throughout this issue are six Editor’s Picks—a shout-out to some local gems outside of this year’s voting categories. As Woodbury continues to grow and change, new restaurants, shops and services keep coming to town. This is reflected in some of this year’s winners which have been in Woodbury for less than 10 years, including Tamarack Tap Room, The Tavern Grill, Patina, Pet Evolution, Learning Rx and Total Wine. On the other side of the coin, many winners have a longstanding presence in Woodbury. In 1981, Central Pediatrics opened its doors at 1937 Woodlane Drive with just 2 to 3 doctors seeing patients. “Back in 1979 and 1980, before opening in Woodbury, some of the physicians were concerned about opening an office there because, at the time, it was an unsettled area,” says Lisa Collins, Central Pediatrics marketing representative. “We now have 14 physicians that regularly see patients at our Woodbury clinic [a brand-new facility on Tamarack Road] which also includes our urgent care clinic, Priority Pediatrics, open evenings and weekends, seven days a week.” There’s also the story of Dorothy Ann Bakery and Café, which originated on St. Paul’s East 7th Street before migrating east to Sun Ray Shopping Center in 1962. In 1988, Dorothy Ann opened in Woodbury on Weir Drive, followed by a second location at City Centre in 1993. The beloved bakery, owned by Joan and Steve Conway, made one more move in 2005 to its current location in Crossroads Commerce Center, growing and changing to meet customers’ needs while maintaining the same dedication to creating top quality bakery goods. Today’s location is where they created their popular Saturday morning breakfast buffet, as well as an expanded café menu and catering options. Whether new or entrenched in the local landscape for many years, here are your best of the best in Woodbury—the winners and finalists who make our city truly extraordinary. Their menu features pub grub that dreams are made of, refined with modern twists. BEST PATIO DINING BEST BAKERY BEST BREAKFAST It may be a surprise that the restaurant voted “Best Patio Dining” is at the corner of two of the city’s busiest roads. Angelina’s Kitchen, an Italian restaurant and wine bar, boasts a large overhead terrace with sprawling greenery that makes patrons feel as through they may be in the mother country. To keep the theme alive, owner Angela Verrastro suggests the perfectly textured eggplant parmesan. “It is an authentic Sicilian preparation and one of Grandma Angelina’s recipes,” she says. Dorothy Ann’s is a staple of Woodbury, so it’s no surprise it has been crowned in this category for four of the past five years. Residents are devoted to their donuts, but what is their best-kept secret? According to owner Joan Conway, the traditional polish Paczki is a must-try. Think jelly donut, but upgraded: This pastry has a dense, doughy shell that pockets a fresh fruit filling. “It is traditionally made before Lent when people fast; however they are in such high demand we also make them every Friday year-round,” Conway says. 710 Commerce In the competitive restaurant world, to be open for 10 years makes a business renowned and revered. To be open 20 years makes a restaurant royalty. That’s exactly what Keys is. Breakfast-goers gush over their homemade cinnamon French toast, and the Keys original omelet that seems to feature the entire contents of a fridge— and then some. But general manager Amy Mulholland invites Woodbury residents to take their lunch menu for a spin as well. “People might be surprised at the quality of our Reuben sandwich; we don’t use deli-sliced corned beef—we have the real deal, corned beef brined and cooked onsite served with homemade Thousand Island dressing.” 1750 Weir Drive; 651.731.5397; 2170 Eagle Creek Lane; 651.998.0474; angelinaskitchen.com RUNNERS UP: Craft Beer & Kitchen, Tamarack Tap Room Dorothy Ann Bakery & Cafe Drive; 651.731.3323; dorothyannbakery.com RUNNERS UP: Nadia Cakes, Keys Café & Bakery Keys Café & Bakery keyscafe.com RUNNERS UP: Woodbury Café, Ze’s Diner 16 BEST OF WOODBURY 2016 PHOTO BY EMILY J. While we have many excellent choices around Woodbury, my nod goes to the spectacular salad bar at Lunds & Byerlys. The woman behind this creation is Bea James, director of bakery and nourish. We touched base with her for more insight on what goes into this cornucopia of fresh, nutritious and wholesome offerings. How many different items are on the salad bar? We have up to 50 items including all of our toppings and boosts. Boosts are nutrient-dense foods that you can sprinkle on top of your salad for added nutrition, such as chia seeds, wheat germ, nutritional yeast and flax. What’s the preparation process for the salad bar? A salad bar superstar is selected to set up and prepare all the items each morning, starting around 5 a.m. They have a lot to do with prepping all the vegetables, roasting items, composing salads such as our strawberry spinach salad and iceberg blue wedges, and filling all the containers so everything is fresh by 9 a.m. It’s an early morning job that takes attention to detail and multitasking. The salad bar superstar takes a lot of pride in doing an excellent job, and it shows. 7050 Valley Creek Plaza; 651.999.1200; lundsandbyerlys.com White Bear Lake, MN www.newstudioarchitecture.com 651.207.5527 WOODBURYMAG.COM 17 Preserve HISTORY REDEFINED. If it involves home and design, they’re on it. “We are unlike many other design firms in that we take a very practical, affordable approach to design,” says owner Amy Leferink. “It takes more talent and creativity to design and decorate a home with a more limited budget.” And Interior Impressions lacks no creativity: This team of four thrives on marrying textures, patterns and styles to create finishes that maintain a modern look without indulging in passing trends. 2190 Eagle BEST LANDSCAPE DESIGNER/ARCHITECT BEST BUILDER/ REMODELER Ispiri Design-Build-Remodel For half a decade, Ispiri has been selected as Woodbury’s Best Builder/Remodeler. We chatted with Lyles to learn more about what inspires this energetic woman. What keeps you going after 26 years of teaching group fitness classes? That satisfaction of helping others. I am inspired by the people in my classes as I see significant changes on a regular basis. Not just gaining lean muscle mass and losing fat, but also increased self-confidence. There are people who start out and can’t do one pushup from the knees—now they’re doing many from the toes. It warms my heart and I am forever grateful that I get to help people become healthier. What is the most challenging part of your career? Right now, it’s keeping my schedule straight. Thankfully I have not shown up at the wrong gym yet! What is your personal favorite physical activity? When I’m not at the gym, I like to be outside rollerblading, biking and walking. I played hockey in my forties . . . I would love to play again (although it’s amazing how bad hockey gloves can smell!). I think it would be fun to participate in a warrior dash or mudder with a group of fun, hardworking people: I’m in it to win it if I go into a competition. What are some interesting facts about you? I like to play cards and board games with family and friends. I also like to read and have been a member of the same book club for 15 years. I love horses and horseback riding. I’ve been married for 29 years, have two sons and recently became a grandparent. So in 2011, we made our last deliveries with those places. It was a business decision and also a personal decision, because the part I loved the most about Angelina’s was knowing my customers.” Needing to make up a lion’s share of her business, Verrastro approached her landlord about a vacant space across the parking lot, a former coffee shop. “I thought I could learn about coffee and serve my food there, and see if I could provide the atmosphere and service that people are looking for,” Verrastro says. “It was more like a café, where we did homemade desserts and a wonderful breakfast that people still ask me about. It was also a logistical nightmare, as the prep work was all done at Angelina’s Kitchen. But it led me to think, ‘I can do this.’” After obtaining space adjacent to Angelina’s Kitchen, Verrastro was able to make her dream a reality: a full-service restaurant and wine bar, with live entertainment each night plus an inviting patio. Take-and-bake meals and catering are still important parts of the business, as is Angelina’s on the Park in Central Park. “It was challenging—we’re in a strip mall in a long, narrow space—but I wanted to create a warm, cozy haven for people where they can come in from their busy day, relax and feel comfortable and welcome,” she says. We sat down with Verrastro one morning before the lunch crowd arrived to talk about her journey with Angelina’s Kitchen. You grew up in New York in a family of cooks. Tell us about that experience. I was born in the Bronx in a very close-knit family, and lived above my grandmother Angelina’s corner Italian luncheonette. She was a tireless, teeny lady and constantly cooking; there was always a big pot of “red gravy” simmering on the stove. Sundays were huge all-day family gatherings at my grandparents’ home. I always hated to leave on Sunday nights. That’s part of the reason why we’re closed on Sundays, so we can all spend time with our families. Unique • Vintage • Magical What would you say now to your younger self when you were just starting this venture? My advice would be to realize that you know less than you think you know, but don’t let that scare you. I’ve taken this business along in baby steps, so my mistakes have been small mistakes along the way. Those mistakes brought me to where I am today, and I’m grateful for that. What are three words you would use to describe yourself? Stubborn. Driven. Passionate. I don’t run on lukewarm; if I’m in, I’m all in. What is your personal favorite dish on the menu? I love our eggplant parmesan, and I love the fact that it’s become so popular; we’ve brought the love of eggplant to Woodbury! I enjoy our spinach lasagna and grilled salmon, and our pizzas are wonderful. An exceptional venue that will make your event impossible to forget. 2222 4th Street White Bear Lake, MN Lorah 612-701-0169 Kristin: 612-308-8801 kellermanseventcenter.com What are you most proud of with Angelina’s Kitchen? I’m so proud people think our take-andbake food is good enough to share with the people who are important to them, such as someone battling cancer. In the dining room, they’re creating memories at the table with people who are special to them. In this busy crazy Internet world we live in, food brings everything back to basics. What are your future goals? My goal is to continue to get better and provide a really great restaurant, offering consistent quality food in a warm inviting atmosphere with great service. It’s a nice thing to be small; I can make sure my staff has the same philosophy. What do you enjoy most about Woodbury? It’s the biggest small town I’ve ever lived in. People really care about each other in this town, and that’s wonderful. It’s a great place to live. // 429 Commerce Drive • Woodbury, MN 55125 (Next to Super Target & Sam’s Club) Self Serve Wash Stations Healthy Foods & Treats Free pet food samples Full-Service Grooming PLUS Rewards program for foods and self serve dog wash stations & Angelina’s Kitchen 2170 Eagle Creek Lane, Woodbury, MN 55129 651.998.0474 | angelinaskitchen.com PetEvolution.com • 651-788-9998 WOODBURYMAG.COM 45 calendar Spring EGG HUNTS MARCH–APRIL Woodbury takes Easter pretty seriously, hosting not one but two annual Easter egg hunts, both always on the same day.
