There are about a thousand students in this building and 100 adult personnel. If we gave just $1.00 each, we would be able to contribute $1100 dollars in aide. In addition to clothing and food that we might normally think of, they are in need of items such as flashlights, batteries, soap, hand sanitizer, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and large/extra large trash bags. We will begin collecting money and other items today. Our monetary goal is $1100. Our goal for donations is to fill the band’s trailer. We would like to reach our goal by this Friday. We know that currently, traffic in and out of Morgan County is very limited, but by Friday, we might be able to send a small delegation of students to deliver the donations to the principal of Morgan County High School. Donations will be accepted at lunch throughout the week. In return for your donation your name will be added to our sponsor banner which will be given to the principal and students at Morgan County High School. 136 Student Athletes at RCSHS qualify for Academic All-State! Adam Wing eclipsed the 1000 rebound mark and placed himself into a club that few have ever been, if any, in Rowan County History because Adam is also a member of the1000 point club (he's got somewhere around 1500 points by now)!! So as we check history (and former coaches) to see if there are any other members, we might also try to think of a name for this club. 2K? – (sounds like the day computers were supposed to crash)! The Double K? – (sounds like a quick stop grocery store)! The Gold Wing club? – (sounds like a motorcycle gang of old men riding Hondas)! Send (better) ideas to shawn.thacker@rowan.kyschools.us . Aaron SnyderThe Independent ASHLAND — How is it possible for a three-time region champion in four seasons to fly under the radar? Answer: If they didn’t win last season. What have you done for me lately? It’s that ever-present notion which placed Rowan County’s girls squarely on the backburner before this season began. Coaches voted the Lady Vikings No. 3 in the 16th Region in The Independent’s preseason poll, but Rowan County enters this week with the best overall record in the region, at 19-3. The Lady Vikings have won 14 of their last 15 games. Rowan County coach Scott Tackett believes he possesses a Player of the Year candidate to whom much of the credit should be directed. “She’s put us on her back in a couple games,” Tackett said. Nine games of 20 or more points, a 17.7 points per game average, a field goal percentage of 46, an assists/game average of 4.6, a rebounding clip of 4.2 a contest and three steals per game gives Tackett reason to call stat sheet-stuffing point guard Taylor Lewis “a candidate for Player of the Year.” Nearing the end of his fifth season, Tackett is 113-31 with three regional championship trophies and a state final four appearance, but he’s yet to coach a Player of the Year. Lewis knows all about flying under the radar. In the aforementioned preseason poll, Lewis received zero votes as a Top 10 player in the region. Last season, situations arose which left Lewis torn between friendships and her basketball team. “We had some who were not really good team players,” Tackett said. “She tried to be loyal to her friends and to the team as well. Regardless of what was going on, Taylor continued to compete.” Lewis started 15 games as a sophomore before becoming a full-time starter as a junior. This season, she’s blossomed into a team leader. “She’s done a tremendous job, and she continues to get better,” Tackett said. “The team feeds off of Taylor’s energy.” The 5-foot-5 senior has two 26-point games, including one which paved the way to a title-game defeat of East Carter in the Queen of the Bluegrass, and another in one of two Lady Vikings victories over talented 61st District rival Fleming County. “She’s a handful in the open floor, and absolutely fearless going to the rim,” Tackett said. Lewis is second in the region in attempts from the foul line, where she shoots 65 percent. Tackett admitted he and his staff thought 16-6 or 17-5 would be Rowan County’s record by the first full week of February. Now, he believes his Lady Vikings have the ability to return to his favorite March destination after a oneyear hiatus, Bowling Green. “Ashland’s the runaway prohibitive favorite, but we feel like we have a chance,” Tackett said. “We’ve played 22 games and haven’t yet given up 1,000 points. This team’s bought in defensively. “We’ll find out more this week,” he added. East Carter comes to Morehead tonight, while Ashland awaits for the first of a girl-boy doubleheader on Tuesday at Anderson Gym. GIRLS BASKETBALL The girls finished their season with a great record 25-7. If you’ve been to a game this year then these girls won your heart! This group worked and played so hard that not only were they fun to watch, but we also expected them to win every game! When parents and fans begin to expect that, you know your program is moving in the right direction!! With that, though, losses hurt a whole lot more. That was evident when the girls fell short in the semifinals to Ashland, the eventual region champion. Congratulations to Catherine Duff and Taylor Lewis were named to the All-Tournament team. But much to everyone’s surprise, I took the microphone and appealed to the kids, who wouldn’t give in. Jennifer Williams, a former Division III player and native of Ohio, packs quite the resume, including a successful six-year run as the head coach of Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C. After several days of deliberation, the 28-year-old Williams decided to leave her position at Mars Hill for the opportunity to take the helm at Rowan County, a challenge the young coach says she is most looking forward to. “I’m really excited about it,” Williams said. “I have heard about what a great community this is and how much pride they take in their sports. To be able to resign from my job down there and be able to land a job like this…I couldn’t have asked for a better situation.” The new job also happened to work out perfectly as it reunites Williams with her husband, Morehad State Softball Head Coach David Williams. Jennifer Williams said Rowan County is a top-tier school system, and it is a place that she and her husband hope to settle into. “When my husband got the job at MSU, my mom called and told me what a great school system Rowan County has,” Williams said. “That’s a typical mom to conduct research on the education (laughing). But I feel education is important, we hope to plant roots here in the community, and start a family here in Morehead.” With little time to prepare for summer basketball sessions, the new Lady Viking commander said it’s going to be quick turnaround to summer ball, which is set to begin next week. “I am a coach that believes you must be able to adjust your playing style to the strengths of your players,” Williams said. “Summer ball is set to begin soon and I am in the process of trying to put together my staff. I’m looking at some top quality people to assist, but right now it’s just me, and it’s most important for me to get to know my players over the next few weeks.” Williams closed with a set of defined goals for the 2012-2013 season. “I want my girls to represent Rowan County Senior High School with integrity and class,” Williams said. “As a coach, I want to see these girls improve their game every day from start to finish. As far as giving a goal as to what kind of record we’re seeking, I can’t really say yet, because I am still learning about my players.” Williams continued, emphasizing the importance of her team getting better. “Of course we want to win and that is the ultimate goal. Improvement throughout the season is what I am looking for, and if we are the same team in March that we are in June, then I haven’t done my job.” BOWLING PERSONNEL REPORT TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2011, 5:30 P.M. ROWAN COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION Employment Hignite, Greg employ as the bowling coach at Rowan County Senior High School for the 2011 - 2012 school year BOWLING The first year team has begun practicing and competing. Congratulations to Coach Greg Hignite for putting this together and providing another sport for our students!! November 25, 2011 New sport rolls into RCSHS By Cody Evans - Staff WriterThe Morehead News We were seeded as team 9th in the brackets for the Regional’s. We defeated the number 8 seed George Rogers Clark 3 matches to 0. We then faced number 1 seed Fleming and were defeated 3-0. In singles action, Kyle Barnhart made the first cut from 40 bowlers to top 8, he was number four at that point. He then went on to make the top 5 in the second cut. In the bowl off with the number four bowler he threw the ball perfectly but the pins did not fall our way. He was defeated. Had he won that he would have gone to the state singles tournament. Coach Greg Hignite spoke about the season, “Given the shortened season, I am very proud of how our team performed in the tournament.” CHEERLEADING Congratulations to our cheerleaders for bringing home the third place trophy from the KAPOS state competition!
