The NZQA external examination period is now over and
today is the senior students sign out day. We will see the
Year 13’s for the last time in their schooling lives, and
the Y11 and 12’s for the last time this year, on Monday
at our Senior Prizegiving.
We hope you will be able to join us in our celebration of
our academic, cultural and sporting excellence achievements of 2013.
Our venue this year is the Balclutha Town Hall, at
7.00pm on Monday, 2nd December, so please feel free to
bring whanau and friends with you to help us celebrate
the achievement of our senior students of 2013.
The juniors have had a wonderful couple of days in outdoor pursuits, they cycled, tramped, golfed, orienteered,
canoed, shot pistols, fired arrows, negotiated team work
over a confidence course, had a mud slide, made beautiful Christmas gifts, photographed each other and their
pets.
My sincere thanks go to all the staff who took these
events and to Ms Sneesby who co-ordinated the whole
programme.
We are looking forward to the junior production and the
finalising of assessments for junior reports, which have
been written over the last week.
We are still busy teaching while the end of the year approaches so very quickly. I ask that parents maintain the
routine of getting students to school on time, in the correct equipment and arrange all appointments for outside
school hours.
I also ask parents to remember that our juniors are
very much the ‘half and half’ – that is, they have
physical maturity sometimes beyond their emotional
maturity. Keep a close eye on where your young person is and who they are with. The unpleasant situation of a fortnight ago at the skatepark was able to
occur because large numbers of young people were
mingling and mixing without adequate numbers of
adults to supervise them.
Our small town means we have strength in knowing
each other, who is connected to who. This valuable
insider information is the very foundation of the
Samoan whakatoki of ‘it takes a village to rear a
child’. If we all care about our collective youth then
they will be far safer from this type of harmful, mindless violence.
As adults we need to get involved, be nosey, be concerned and take action to protect our young people
from peer pressure and popular culture.

Ki O Rahi Year 9 and 10 Tournament
Ki O Rahi is a traditional Maori game that all Year 9 and 10 students have been learning to play. On the afternoons
of December 5th, 6th and 9th students will participate in a form class tournament during period 4 and 5. Hangi will
be available for students to pre order for lunch on Friday 5th December, for a substituted priced of $8.00. All pre
orders are due by Wednesday 4th December. All parents are welcome to pre order hangi and watch the tournament.
Adult pre-orders will be $12.00 and the hangi will be ready at 12.30.
Students have been involved in the organisation of this tournament through learning tasks in all of their subject
areas. We look forward to parents coming to see their work in action.

Sunday 1st of December 10am to 5pm (all
cast, chorus and crew). Please bring $2 for
chips for lunch. Also snacks for the day and
something to do while you are not
performing.
If you cannot make it your parent/caregiver
must let Mr Bertanees know in writing.

We are very excited to have just had
arrive in The Luminaries, by Eleanor
Cattan. This book has just won the
Man Booker Prize for 2013, judging
it the best fiction book of 2013! What
an achievement for this NZ Author. It
is a historical novel set in the NZ
Goldrushes of 1866, centring around
a group of 12 men and the stranger
that walks into their midst one day. I
think it will definitely be top of the
list for Mr Heller's holiday reading!
There's still a few outstanding library
books, and not many days left to get
them back. Please return them ASAP
in order to get Clearance on the 10th
running more smoothly, for myself,
the office staff and of course your
children.

Australian Rugby Tour 2014
Many thanks to all who got involved with
The Country Ramble on Sunday - helpers
and participants. We had excellent feedback,
so sounds like you all enjoyed it. Next Friday night we have X-Factor Finalist Tom
Batchelor coming to do a concert at the
Town Hall. It will be family friendly, starts
at 8pm, and is only $15 per person (See attached flyer). We are also about to get busy
preparing firewood to burn in the 2014 season, if you would like to order some please
