Year 10 Borough Rounders Tournament
On Thursday 11th June Queensmead School entered a team into the Borough Rounders
Tournament, held at Vyners School.
The team consisted of GCSE PE and BTEC Sport students and was captained by Rhiannon Besley.
The team demonstrated some outstanding fielding and batting skills, combined with an excellent
understanding of strategic match play.
The first match started off with some nervous fielding, but the team soon found their feet and
beat Harlington 5.5 – 7.5. They continued their winning streak and beat Barnhill by 2.5 rounders.
In the final match Queensmead faced Vyners, who had also won their opening matches. Vyners
won the right to field first, which put Queensmead at a disadvantage. However, some powerful
hits saw Queensmead finish batting with seven rounders, this was then followed by a solid display
of fielding, with exceptional team work. Vyners scored six rounders and Queensmead were
crowned tournament champions.
The team was a credit to the school and each player received a winner’s medal.

Year 9 Borough Rounders Tournament
On Thursday 18th June nine Year 9 pupils went to Vyners School for the yearly Borough Rounders
Competition.
After winning the competition in Year 8 there was a lot of pressure on them to succeed again.
They began the day playing Barnhill, Northwood School and Harlington in the heats. They beat all
of those schools by a significant amount meaning they were through to the semi-finals against the
hosts, Vyners School.
It was a close game but again, Queensmead won the match meaning they were through to the
final against Bishop Ramsey School.
This game was met with some apprehension as we had previously lost to them in the weekly
fixtures. However, on the eleventh ball out of twenty we had already beaten Bishop Ramsey's
score and won the Borough Competition!
Champions for the second year in a row! Well done to all the team for their hard work and
commitment! It definitely paid off!

Geography Trip
On Saturday 30th May the Morocco trip students set off for Leith Hill in Surrey for a practice walk.
Fitness was the main priority as we know we have to trek up to the summit of Mount Toubkal
which is 4,167 metres above sea level.
We met Helen, our Schools Worldwide leader there and she showed us the Ordnance Survey maps
of the area so we could plan our route. Taking it in turns to be leader, we managed to navigate our
way round the Surrey countryside and completed an 11km walk. We even found a waterfall on our
walk! It’s not long to go until we fly off to Marrakech for our real trek!

My Grim Tale
Number 46A may seem like an ordinary house but it’s nothing of the sorts. No one can ever see
behind the front door, all they see is a sweet old couple.
Gert, the frail old woman makes the young and skinny lodger pie and casseroles made from the
last lodgers. Of course, the lodgers just thought she was being generous. One cold winter’s night
Bert, the ugly old man knew it was time. They locked them in their room whilst they slept. They
then crept in and gouged out their eye balls and cut them up ready for the next pie.

GCSE PE – Fencing
Queensmead School have linked up with the Hillingdon Musketeers Fencing Club. Paul Harden, a
Level 3 fencing coach is running six after school sessions with our Year 10 GCSE PE students every
Monday until the end of term.
The students will complete the six sessions and then be assessed in line with the OCR specification
as part of the GCSE PE course.
Hillingdon Musketeers Fencing Club have also offered the students the opportunity to
attend their Friday evening sessions, held at Brunel University. The cost of these sessions has been
waived by the club to give our students the chance to fence more experienced club members and
to widen their knowledge of the sport.

Warwick University
On Monday 8th June five students in Year 9 visited Warwick University to get a sense of
university life.
The students had a tour of the campus and even went to lectures including Law.
Overall, the day was very enlightening and changed the students’ views on what university life
is like. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and it even made them think about their
university options and whether they would like to go.

Girls Cricket Summer 2015
The Queensmead girl’s cricket team train on a Thursday after school. The girls have been
extremely dedicated to training each week and have been very enthusiastic and welcoming.
The girls played two league matches and made Queensmead cricketing history when they beat
Haydon at home by nine runs.
At the Hillingdon Secondary Schools’ Girls Cricket Tournament at Eastcote Cricket Club the girls
were described as fantastic and a credit to the school by one of the organisers following a victory
over Bishop Ramsey’s B team. Unfortunately the team did not make the final but it was a very
enjoyable afternoon with wickets and boundaries from various members of the team.
Really well done to all the girls who came along to training and played in the matches and a
special thank you to Thurka Sarvananthan, Sowmiya Baskaran and Saganaa Sathiyaseelan who
took turns to captain the team.
