This summer, the “ice bucket challenge,” benefiting research
for ALS, often known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, went viral on
social media. All over the country, people dumped buckets of ice
on their heads to raise awareness for the disease and simultaneously
raised millions of dollars for research.
There are so very many worthy causes out there, so many needs
vying for all of our attention, and it’s a rare coup to stand out against
the crowd as ALS did this year.
At Pacific University, we have no such device. We hope that your
own experience and memories of Pacific, coupled with stories of the
people here today, will help you forge and strengthen connections
with the university — and will inspire you to consider giving back to
tomorrow’s students.
This issue of Pacific magazine is our annual philanthropy edition.
It celebrates the difference that you, as donors and friends, have
made to the university.
Financial support is, of course, of paramount importance. As many
as 92 percent of today’s students — 99 percent of undergraduates
— receive financial aid; the gifts you provide make a Pacific
University education possible for countless students.
These students are our pride and our joy. They go on to become
doctors and artists, business leaders and community activists. They
FEB
make our world better thanks to the education they receive and,
hopefully, they in turn give back to a new generation.
Thank you for your continued support and love of Pacific University!

Shady Walk
THE ALPHA ZETA WALK continues to commemorate Pacific University’s
fallen students with new trees native to Oregon
Some 70 birch trees were removed from Pacific University’s Forest
Grove Campus this summer, including a historic row that lined the Alpha
Zeta Walk. Though the trees are gone, their legacy lives on.
Nearly 70 years old, the birches had outlived their species’ expected
lifespan, developed root rot, and were in imminent danger of falling,
according to the certified arborist who conducted Pacific’s annual
landscaping assessment.
But their removal was not without some remorse. Forty-one of the trees
lined the Alpha Zeta Walk, a pathway between Jefferson and Warner halls,
which was dedicated to the memory of Pacific University students who were
killed in World War II.
The removal was a hard loss for some alumni who remember, if not the actual
dedication of the trees, at least part of the story. Some say that the walkway
was planted with one tree for each fallen soldier — though that raises some
questions, as 31 students are believed to have died in the war.
Even the year of planting and dedication is a bit hazy. The plaque
commemorating the walk says it was dedicated in 1948. But it’s at least the
third plaque that’s marked the walkway. Photos of a previous plaque agree
it was 1948, but an even earlier marker says the walk was dedicated on
Armistice Day 1946. The Pacific Index archives show no dedication story
for either year.
Meanwhile, another old photo — this one dated 1944 — shows the
walkway already lined with birch trees, tall, if not fully mature.
Were the trees planted specifically for the fallen students? And if so, when?
Or was an existing birch walk dedicated in their honor? Who was there?
We may never know all of the answers (though we welcome alumni
memories at pacificmag@pacificu.edu).
What we do know is that the Alpha Zeta Walk remains, even if the original
trees do not. The walkway has now been replanted with native Oregon
white oaks, a longtime symbol of Pacific University and of learning. With a
potential lifespan of more than 400 years, the oaks offer a new memorial to
the sacrifice of a generation past. 

Living Every Moment
BY JENNI LUCKETT
PARRISH EVANS ’11
Olin Blackmore ’15
is determined to make
the most of his last year
at Pacific University.
“I want to be as involved with
everything as I can be, because four
years just flew by,” said the senior
chemistry major and dance minor.
Blackmore first discovered Pacific
on a bit of a whim. Originally from
Anchorage, he visited at the urging
of his uncle, who attended physical
therapy school at the university.
Olin Blackmore ’15 and Professor Rick Whiteley
“I didn’t schedule a tour or anything,” he said. “But
they were so welcoming. It just felt like a very
personable school.
“The person who gave me the tour, we still stay in touch,
even though she graduated about three years ago.”
Later, he attended the Pacesetters Scholarship
Competition, where he got another glimpse at Pacific’s
culture. Most Pacesetters attendees — high school
students who visit to compete for a scholarship and
learn more about the school — bring their parents,
but the expense prevented Blackmore’s mother from
joining him.
I had a job in high school. I wanted an affordable
college education.”
Blackmore also auditioned for and received
scholarships for theatre and dance, and he recently
received a M.J. Murdock Trust scholarship —
all of which are closely tied to the experiences
he’s had as a student.
He originally came to Pacific with dreams of
becoming a doctor. He took several exercise science
and biology classes, but found that he was more
interested in chemistry. This year, he will do research
with Professor Rick Whiteley, looking at nickel
electrodes in space batteries.
“I felt a little left out, but then some students
took me in and sort of acted as my makeshift
parents,” he said. “That’s where I truly fell in love
with the school.
“Every day I wake up and think, ‘I’m going to do
research with someone who worked at NASA!”
Blackmore said.
“I am very much a family dude, and I’ll be honest,
coming from such a great distance was hard, but the
students made me know I could do it.”
“Simply put, Olin is a great kid, full of energy, ambition,
curiosity, and he is smart, too!” Whitely said.
Ultimately, though, Blackmore’s decision to attend
Pacific centered on financial aid.
“I got an academic scholarship, and that’s when
I realized Pacific was a solid contender,” he said.
“My parents both work, and they work hard.
Whiteley, in turn, calls Blackmore a “star” in his classes.
A dancer since second grade, Blackmore also has
performed in both theatre and dance productions
at Pacific.
“I considered not dancing at all, but then I met Jennifer
Camp, and she rekindled my love of it,” he said. “I
definitely thought I wouldn’t be dancing as much,

but now I’m thinking of
perhaps pursuing a career
in it.”
Lifelong teachers, the couple touched thousands
of lives, not only in the classroom, but through
philanthropic and community service involvement.
Camp, the director of
dance at Pacific, said
Blackmore has become an
artist in his time at Pacific.
Their legacy carries on in a new endowed scholarship
that will support students seeking their education at
Pacific University.
“He has utilized his time
at Pacific to grow into an
accomplished performer
and a gifted choreographer through his complete dedication
and discipline to dance,” she said. “Olin is a true inspiration to
everyone around him.”
Meanwhile, Blackmore serves as president of the Undergraduate
Student Senate.
“At this school, you can see the changes you want. You get
an immediate benefit,” he said, citing recent work to extend
sustainability with a covered bike shelter, water stations around
campus, and an elliptical
machine in the gym that
converts exercise into energy.
“I like to think we’re making
a little impact on the school
as students.”
“I got an academic
scholarship, and
that’s when I
realized Pacific was
a solid contender.”
Blackmore isn’t sure what
will come next.
“At this point,” he said,
“I’m focused on my senior
capstone, and I want to leave
my mark on the dance and
theatre programs.”
He spent the summer at a nuclear forensic summer school in
Columbia, Mo., which led to his plans to start applying to
graduate school soon, and he also did an intensive stint with
a dance company in Seattle, which piqued his interest in
further performing.
“I would like to keep those two passions intermingling,” he said.
“Pacific has offered a lot of fantastic opportunities … I’m so
lucky to be at this school and where I am right now.” 

Born in Salem, Edwin served in the Merchant Marines
and then in the U.S. Army during World War II. After
the war, he attended Pacific University, where he
played basketball and earned a bachelor’s degree in
physical education.
Lois, originally from Portland, attended Marylhurst
College, where she also earned a bachelor’s in education.
The couple married in 1951, a year before Ed finished
his degree, and together they taught in Cascade Locks,
and later Rockaway, Ore., while Ed also coached. They
also traveled the world, living for a time in Japan, and
teaching together in the Virgin Islands.
Upon their retirement, they moved to Redmond, Ore.,
wintering in Arizona and California. Ed loved fishing
and golfing, and he remained active in the Neah Kah
Nie High School graduate scholarship committee, even
after his retirement. Lois was known for her generous
nature and lifelong support of scholarships, foundations,
museums, universities and churches.
The Balls were members of the Pacific University Heart of
Oak Society for many years, having made arrangements
in their estate plans for a gift to Pacific after their deaths.
Ed passed away in 2004, and Lois in 2013.
Only upon their deaths did Pacific discover the
magnitude of their gift. Thanks to their careful estate
planning, the Balls ultimately donated nearly $150,000,
endowing an unrestricted scholarship that will allow
Pacific to offer financial support to students with
the greatest need — and continuing their lifelong
dedication to education into perpetuity. 
A planned gift to Pacific University allows your legacy
to live on in perpetuity.
By including Pacific in your long-term financial planning, you can
make a meaningful contribution to the life of the university and
its students — often more than you ever imagined thanks to tax
savings and asset management.
If you have made a provision, such as a bequest, trust, or life

Busy.
That’s how Jim OD ’60 and
Mary Fair Berglund ’58 describe
life as they left the Midwest to
study at Pacific University.
“We had three young children, we were
both taking classes, working hard, and
there wasn’t much time. But it was great,”
said Mary Berglund. “We were smalltown kids, and so we were very happy in
Forest Grove and at Pacific.”
The Berglunds are among Pacific’s most
generous donors. They recently were
among the inaugural class of donors
inducted into the 1849 Society, Pacific’s
newest giving society recognizing those
whose lifetime contributions have totaled
$1 million or more. Berglund Hall, on
Pacific’s Forest Grove Campus, bears
their name, and they also founded the
Berglund Center and supported the
founding of the College of Business and
numerous other endeavors at Pacific.
Following their own time at Pacific, the
Berglunds returned to their hometown
of Spencer, Iowa. Jim Berglund went
into optometry practice with his
father-in-law and later moved into the
business side of eye care. He quickly
became known as an innovative and
respected leader in the field.
He was president of Central Laboratories
in Lincoln, Neb., an early manufacturer of
contact lenses. When American Optical
acquired the business, he became general
manager of its contact lens division. Next,
he was president of Continuous Curve
Contact Lens, Inc., which he led to success
before it was acquired by Revlon.

Throughout his career, Jim Berglund has had the
rare ability to anticipate and embrace change. He
recognized early, for example, the potential of the
contact lens, when other optometrists held out.
“I didn’t at first think of myself as a business
leader or innovator,” he said. “I was a practicing
optometrist. But it was something in me, I think,
that when others were resisting change or new
ideas, I seemed to be able to find practical ways to
look forward, see
potential and make
it work.”
“It’s nice that when
you make a gift to
Pacific, you know
it can make a
big difference.”
After a short
retirement, Jim
Berglund founded
Enterprise Partners
Venture Capital,
specializing in
start-ups.
Meanwhile, Mary
Berglund has
found her own
success. She earned
a degree in economics from Pacific, receiving the
Pacific President’s Cup for the graduating student
with the highest grade point average. She then
earned master’s and doctoral degrees in economics
from the University of Nebraska, where she
became a faculty member.
— Mary Fair Berglund ’58
When the couple moved to southern California,
she served on the faculty at the University of San
Diego and the University of California, Irvine.
She also has held posts at the Federal Railroad
Administration and Department of Agriculture.
Wherever they have gone, the Berglunds have
remained committed supporters of Pacific
University and of their communities. Jim Berglund
has served on 55 boards of directors of various
companies and nonprofit organizations, many in
the San Diego area where the Berglunds now reside.
Mary Berglund also has been an active community
leader, serving as director and board member of
numerous organizations.
Pacific University Trustee Julie Berglund Baker accepts her parents’ 1849 Society
membership from President Lesley Hallick at the 2014 Celebration of Giving.
Jim Berglund served on the Pacific University
Board of Trustees from 2001 to 2009 and
remains a trustee emeritus. In 2011, he
was the inaugural recipient of the College
of Optometry’s Kamelia Massih Prize for a
Distinguished Optometrist.
Today, their daughter Julie Berglund Baker
continues the family tradition as a member
of the Pacific University Board of Trustees
and chair of its Academic Affairs Committee.
The Berglunds’ commitment to Pacific is a
way to give back to an institution that gave
them a foundation.
“We were taught to think, to ask why. It wasn’t
about just doing things by rote, or doing one
procedure and then the next on down the line,”
Jim Berglund said. “It was about the why, it was
about thoughtfulness. And I think it has to do
with the strong connection and foundation of
the liberal arts at Pacific. That’s very valuable.”

Raise the Roof
BY JENNI LUCKETT
PARRISH EVANS ’11
Hanson Stadium, home to Boxer football, soccer, lacrosse, and
track and field, was transformed this summer with the addition
of a canopy over the grandstands
Forest Grove is home for Rich and Joy Hanson.
Though they don’t live here anymore, the Hansons
remain connected to the small town where they grew up.
Earlier this year, that connection became even more
formal, as Pacific University dedicated its sports stadium
to the long-time donors and friends.
Hanson Stadium was transformed this summer with the
addition of a canopy over the grandstands. The stadium
is home to Boxer football, soccer, lacrosse, and track and
field, as well as commencement and community events.
Featuring a cantilevered design — meaning no
view-obstructing support beams between fans and the
field — the stadium now offers protection from both
sun and rain for the thousands of people who attend
events there each year.

The roof has been a passion for
Rich Hanson.
“Rich was really the instigator for getting
this roof built, and in record time,” said
Mindy Cameron ’65, chair of the Pacific
University Board of Trustees.
Rich and Joy (Engelen) Hanson were
both raised in Forest Grove.
After graduating from the University
of Oregon, Rich Hanson joined a
management training program at
U.S. Gypsum. He spent 39 years with
the Weyerhaeuser Co., retiring in
2008 as executive vice president
and chief operating officer.
In September 2005, he joined the
Pacific University Board of Trustees.
In 2011, the couple received the
university’s Harvey Clark Award.
“Rich and Joy have given so much,”
said Pacific University President Lesley
Hallick. “It is an honor to name this
stadium after the Hanson family.”
Today, the couple lives in Longbranch,
Wash., but they remain dedicated
supporters of Pacific University.
recently, they were lead donors on the
stadium roof project.
The roof, Rich Hanson said, is close to
the heart because the stadium is part of
Lincoln Park Athletic Complex, a joint
venture between Pacific and the City of
Forest Grove — and so it’s a way to
support both.

It’s all part of what he sees as an
investment in the growth of the university.
“I joined the board almost 10 years ago,”
he said. “In that time, we’ve added 1,000
students — that’s a 42 percent increase.
“I guarantee you, Pacific is on a roll and

One Generation to the Next
BY JENNI LUCKETT
Jim Sumner ’66 was the first in his family
to attend college.
“My parents were enjoying the post-war
prosperity. They said, ‘We’d love you to go
to college.’”
At Pacific, Sumner found a wider world
than he’d imagined.
“I had gone to what was, at the time,
Oregon’s largest high school. It was
enormous, over 3,000 students, and
in that entire student
body were one AfricanAmerican student,
whose parents were
very well educated, one
Japanese-American
family who ran the
grocery store, and two
Latinos,” he said.
Sumner is among a group of Pacific alumni
from the late ’60s who would like to make
it a little easier for students — particularly
those who, like him, are first-generation
college students — to gain an education.
The classes have banded together to raise
$25,000 to endow a scholarship, which they
are calling the Golden Guard Scholarship,
in recognition of their upcoming 50-year
reunions, at which alumni are inducted into
the Golden Guard.
The scholarship would
target students who are
the first in their families
to attend college.
“I got to Pacific and realized right away
there were a whole lot of interesting
people here I didn’t know anything about.”
He remembers Pacific University in
the late 1960s as a bastion of diversity,
thanks in part to aggressive student
recruitment in Hawai‘i, in California, and
in traditionally low-income and racially
diverse high schools, combined with the
relative affordability of a college education.
“If you worked part time during the
school year and full time in the summer,
which everybody did, and your parents
were able to give you a little bit of help,
you could easily meet the cost of any
school in the country and graduate
without debt,” Sumner said. “That’s
not the case anymore.”
The idea was to pool
the efforts of classes
across several years
to get to the point
of an endowed
scholarship, said
Bruce Bishop ’68.
Bishop said that a
scholarship created
from their fundraising would target students
with financial need in their third and fourth
years at Pacific, so they don’t “just come in
for their freshman or sophomore year and
then not be able to graduate for financial
reasons,” he said. The scholarship also
would, ideally, focus on students who are
the first in their families to attend college.
Bishop said he believes that the scholarship
might help attract a more diverse population
of students — one that more closely mirrors
his and Sumner’s Pacific experiences.
“It’s much more expensive now, obviously,
for students than it was in my day,” he
said. “So hopefully the Golden Guard
Scholarship will be a way that our classes
can help support students in following in
our footsteps.” n

OREGON TERRITORY MISSIONARIES Elkana and Mary Richardson
Walker are among the earliest white settlers in the region. Their son,
Cyrus, grew up at Tshimakain, learning the native Spokane language,
and later worked at Warm Springs Indian Agency. Walker descendent
Betty Thorn recently donated a collection of Cyrus Walker’s papers,
including journals and letters, to Pacific University, marking one of
the most significant additions ever to the university collections.

WHEN MADISON CLIFFORD ’17 WANTS
A CHANGE of scene, she grabs her computer
and heads to her floor lounge.
On a clear day, she can see Mt. Hood
from the fourth-floor common space in
Pacific University’s new Cascade Hall.
“It’s a really pretty view,” said the sophomore.
“Lots of people hang out there.”
Pacific’s newest living community opened
this fall to nearly 200 students, most freshmen
and sophomores. The hall is designed to help
draw underclassmen into the community. The
rooms, though comfortable, are basic, while
common areas — like the floor lounges,
shared kitchens and spacious first-floor
recreation area — are luring.
The hall also is designed to fit the university’s
aesthetic and philosophical values. Its wood
and brick exterior borrow from the historic
feel of Marsh and McCormick halls, while its
up-to-the-minute environmental design match
Pacific’s commitment to sustainability.

Nuts & Bolts
In Cascade, students
control thermostats in their
own rooms, but sensors
turn off the heat if a
window is open.
Art Professor Jim Flory
created the four-floor
mural that “cascades”
down the grand staircase.
In the UC students eat
in The Grove, pick up
snacks in the P.O.D. Market
and grab coffee at the
full-service Starbucks.
Cascade Hall is part of a larger transformation
project that launched this summer throughout
the university. The new roof over the
grandstands at Hanson Stadium (page 14),
as well as remodeled classroom and lab
space at the Hillsboro Campus are part of
the transformation, as is the refresh of the
Washburne University Center.
After a summer of remodeling, the UC
reopened to students in September with a
whole new look. A large, round skylight brings
in natural light, while contemporary furniture,
selected by a student committee, offers
comfortable eating, studying and lounging
options. The stairways have been opened up
and the bathrooms remodeled. The bookstore
has moved in from off campus. And, updates
to the dining options — from all-access meal
plans to the new full-service Starbucks —
make it an enticing place to eat.
For Clifford, the updates throughout campus
are part of an even better college experience.
“My siblings went here six and eight years
ago,” she said. While she’ll share their
academic success, her on-campus life will
be something different.
“It’s a chance to create my own experience.” n

Oregon Gov. Victor G. Atiyeh Hon. ’96
A longtime friend of Pacific University, Gov. Victor G. Atiyeh died July 20, 2014, at the age of 91. Atiyeh
held an honorary degree from Pacific University and was a member of the Board of Trustees. He recently
donated his personal collection of papers, memorabilia and other artifacts to Pacific University for
preservation and public viewing, and the collection opened with a special exhibit in October 2013.
“Pacific University lost a great friend yesterday with the passing of Gov. Vic Atiyeh,” President Lesley Hallick
said upon the governor’s death. “As a legislator, governor, and later, as a member of our Board of Trustees,
Gov. Atiyeh took a keen interest in higher education and Pacific University, in particular. We are very grateful
for his contributions and honored to help preserve his legacy as custodians of his personal collection.”
Atiyeh was born Feb. 20, 1923, to Syrian immigrants and would later become the nation’s first Arab-
American governor. He played football for the University of Oregon and turned down an offer to play for
the Green Bay Packers. He joined the military during World War II but was kept out of active service due
to childhood injuries.
He married his high school sweetheart, Dolores Hewitt, on July 5, 1944, and took over the family carpet
business that year.
In 1958, Atiyeh was recruited to run for the Oregon House of Representatives. He served three terms in the House and four terms in the Senate,
including a stint as Senate minority leader. H
e lost a bid for governor in 1974, but was elected in 1978. He served through eight years of economic
upheaval and was known for his work to diversify Oregon’s economy, leading a variety of trade missions overseas.
In 1979, he received the Pacific University Service Award, and he sat on the Board of Trustees from 1987 to 1995. In 1996, he was awarded an
honorary doctor of letters degree from Pacific. A
tiyeh selected Pacific to write and publish his official biography, which will be authored by faculty
member Jim Moore, director of the Tom McCall Center for Policy Innovation. Publication is planned for 2016.
Atiyeh is survived by his wife Dolores, daughter Suzanne, son Tom, and five grandchildren.
At the governor’s request, the Pacific University Chamber Singers performed 12 selections at his public memorial service at the Oregon Capitol.
Gifts in his memory may be made to the Governor Atiyeh Endowment, the Atiyeh Scholarship Endowment, the Governor Victor Atiyeh Collection
or the Atiyeh Biography Project at Pacific University.
