Hot Tapping & Valve Boring
Cold Cutting
The Claxton Hot Tapping system is robust,
field-proven and backed by a business with
decades of oil and gas experience.
Claxton Cold Cutting equipment is widely
used in decommissioning, Wellhead
installation and in tieback operations.
Claxton designs, supplies and operates
systems for the provision of Hot Tapping into
valves on Wellheads, Christmas trees, check
valves and all types of tubulars for both surface
or subsea operations. We provide this service
for the global upstream oil and gas industry as
well as downstream petrochemical facilities –
working on pipelines, flare lines, valves etc.
Benefits of the Claxton Hot
Tapping system
• Full pressure containment to allow for
simultaneous operations
• Proven to cut from standard steel pipe,
through to super-hard materials like
honeycomb stellite
• Range of machines for applications up to
15,000 PSI
• Modular systems provide flexible project
applications
• Systems that enhance safety and
operational efficiency
Rapid mobilisation
Our fleet of Hot Tapping equipment, like
all of Claxton’s rental inventory, is
available for rapid mobilisation from sites
in both the Middle East and the UK.
• Hot tap size is limited only by the
pressure that may be present
• Equalisation-controlling orifice valve
reduces dynamic shock to the pressure
retaining components.
Flexibility is always a key requirement for
offshore applications and our cold cutting
systems can be adjusted on request to suit
numerous applications. Our machines are
air-driven, which makes them suitable for use
in hazardous environments. In addition, our
cold-cutting operations are classified as
cold-work: no hot-work permit is required.
Benefits
Onsite machining
• Lightweight, sectional design allows easy
installation and easy adjustment
Claxton can also provide a suite of tooling
compatible with its cold cutting machines to
enable on-site machining services including;
skimming of casings, flange facing and cutting

Wellhead Replacement - Middle East
The Problem
A client in the Middle East asked Claxton to
supply equipment and personnel to replace a
number of damaged Wellheads – including
casing cutting, preparation and installation of
the new Wellhead.
Claxton rapidly mobilized a fleet of equipment
to meet this requirement. Here’s how we
tackled the job:
22
The Solution
The Result
1. A Claxton Double Drilling
Unit was used to cut
through the outer casing,
allowing us to cut through
one string at a time.
4. The Cold Cutting
process was repeated to
provide the required
casing configuration.
2. Our Cold Cutting
equipment was used to
finish the cut and provide
the correct profile.
5. We supplied on-site
machining tools to provide
threads and machined
profiles to interface with
the new Wellheads.
3. Where the Wellhead
was still intact, A Claxton
Rapier Casing Bandsaw
was used to cut the
remaining casings and
remove the old Wellhead.
6. With the casing prepared,
Claxton was able to
install the new Wellheads –
completing the job.
Claxton completed the project – which involved
multiple casing configurations, working in
challenging desert environments – on schedule
and ‘under budget’. The client, a major national
oil company, commented on the quality and
speed of the work.

Case Study
Other Services
Claxton Wellheads beat
challenging delivery schedule
Claxton was recently contracted to supply five
complete Wellhead systems for a major gas
storage project in the United Kingdom – a
project that started out as a typical Wellhead
design and supply job... until faster than
expected progress meant the client was forced
to bring the delivery schedule forward by nearly
a month.
The project called for five Claxton Full Bore
Drill-Through Wellhead systems with mandrel
casing/tubing hangers and composite block
Xmas trees. In addition the systems were built to
withstand the potentially corrosive fluids they
were expected to encounter during their field
life.
Claxton was initially asked to work to an eight
week delivery schedule – a short lead time that
would already challenge many of the major
Wellhead suppliers.
However, we were able to really step up to the
plate when the client requested an even shorter
schedule – the new dates meant that the first
equipment would be supplied by Claxton just
four weeks from the initial order. With larger
suppliers, delivering to this kind of reduced
schedule would be difficult – perhaps even
impossible. However Claxton was able to meet
the revised dates and the client was able to
capitalise on this to improve the economics of
their project.
Claxton also supplied installation and testing
services for the Wellheads – and has
subsequently worked with the same operator
on a number of Wellhead supply jobs.
