Editor’s Tank:
It’s all about the fish…
Well, it was long in planning and very
hard work, but PVAS has put
another successful Aquafest to bed.
This special edition of the club
magazine is dedicated to the event,
to the people who came and worked
their heart out, and to the fish, of
course. It’s all about the fish!

Future of the Hobby
26
From the fish show on Friday to the
auction on Sunday, each of the three
clubs
took
their
responsibility
seriously and worked hard to pull off
their section of the convention.
Members from PVAS, CCA and
GWAPA pitched in and worked sideby-side, talking fish and plants and
tank-keeping and sharing in a bond
that unites us all – our love of the
hobby.
Whether you keep a tank full of
guppies, or a monster fish that eats
guppies for a snack, every facet of
the
freshwater
hobby
was
represented. Friends were made,
and a good time was had by all. I
hope you enjoy this special edition of
the magazine, devoted to this
extraordinary event!

The Three “Families”
Three “Families” Come Together for
A Fall Event….
Every other year, the three major aquarium clubs in the
area come together to put on a large event that features
the best and brightest that each club has to offer.
Dubbed “Aquafest’, the event features the best of the
Potomac Valley Aquarium Society, the Capital Cichlid
Association, and the Greater Washington Aquatic Plant
Association. Members of “the families”, as the clubs are
affectionately called, band together to put on a fish
show, bring in aquarium related speakers, and run an
all-day professional auction. The event is a major fundraiser for all three clubs, funding successful programs in
the coming year.
Pat Kelly of CCA, Kris Weinhold of GWAPA, and Sherry
Mitchell of PVAS bring their clubs together to put on
Aquafest. Photo by: Li Chih, Monster Aquaria Net.
This year was no different. Beginning with an early
January meeting of the three presidents of each club,
plans were put into place to create the event that
brought success in prior years. Early on CCA stepped
forward to take on the fish show, GWAPA stepped up to
the plate to coordinate the aquascaping contest and
procure raffle items, and PVAS volunteered to do what it
does best – the all-day auction.
Sherry Mitchell, PVAS
Through months of planning, the event took shape. Jen
Williams, a member of all three clubs designed the
poster that found a place in 32 pet stores around the
Beltway. Pat Kelly took on the registration duties, Dave
Williams of GWAPA set about scoring raffle items, and
Sherry Mitchell and Ron Leftwich took on the task of
automating and streamlining the auction process.
Early registrations began to trickle in during the month of
August. It was slow going at first, but registrations
gained momentum in September and the leaders of the
event knew they were ready to roll two weeks out from
the event when registrations topped numbers from 2007,
the last year the event was held.
In all, Aquafest 2009 attracted over 150 participants,
hosted a dozen vendors, had over 130 auction
participants, and took in 133 entries in the fish show.
Rooms where speakers gave presentations were full,
with close to 100 participants, and auction results fared
well. The event was a success, everyone had a great
time, funding was provided for the coming year for all
three clubs, and the three “families” found themselves
closer than ever as they shared their love for the hobby.
