A Special Thank You to All of Our Amazing Girl Scouts!
4 Troops Visit in May with Many Donations for our Dogs & Cats
time visiting with the cats and dogs in our
care. Thank you Troop 80594 for your efforts
and connecting with the SPCA.
Plainwell Girl Scout Troop 80594 brought
two full baskets of donations to the Rescue
Center Thursday, May 22, to help support the
efforts of the SPCA. They earned $200 selling
cookies and talking with people about their
awareness and concern for homeless pets in
their community. They took action to help. This
wonderful, thoughtful group of Scouts learned
more about the SPCA and how their hard work
will help make a difference. They had a great

Brownie Troop 80399 from Portage visited
the Rescue Center Wednesday evening, May
14, arms and a wagon filled with donations
to help the animals in our facility. We are so
grateful for their hard work and keeping the
SPCA in their hearts and minds. They had
fun touring Kitty City and the dog kennel
and learning about the mission of the SPCA.
Thank you scout leader, Adrienne Wiltzer, and
parents for supporting the Scouts’ interest and
compassion.
On Tuesday, May 13, we were delighted to
welcome Jane Sutton and her Brownie Troop
80405 from Arcadia Elementary to the SPCA
Animal Rescue and Adoption Center. The
15 2nd, 3rd & 4th graders donated a large
amount of pet food & items listed on the
SPCA needs list, along with a check for $75
they had raised from their cookie sales. The
girls had surveyed troop members, as well
as those purchasing their cookies, as to how
the money should be used. The result - use
for medication and food for the rescue pets
at the center. The troop enjoyed touring the
center, visiting the pups in the kennels and
playing with cats in Kitty City. All of us at
the Rescue Center thank you for your kind
generosity!

Girl Scout leaders Angie Thomas and
Stephanie Norg brought their Troop 80356 of
Portage to the Rescue Center Tuesday, May
20, to visit with our cats and dogs. The girls
went door to door in their neighborhoods
and raised $119.21 to donate along with
two plastic tubs of items from our needs list.
They spent a few minutes learning about the
shelter and how many dogs and cats have
been rescued since 2002. They said, “WOW.”
It is impressive. We had a great time touring
the kennels and kitty city. We are deeply
grateful for their interest in our Rescue
Center and their action to lend a hand to
help the animals in our care. Thank you
Troop 80356!
Girl Scout Troop 90633 from Paw Paw visited
the Rescue Center, Wednesday, May 21 to
learn more about our mission and to bring
us donations from our needs list. They played
with the cats in Kitty City and toured the dog
kennel. We appreciate their leaders, Jennifer
Harms and Lisa Herr, for bringing them to the
shelter, and supporting their efforts to become
aware of the plight of homeless dogs and cats
in Southwest Michigan and take action to help
them along with the SPCA. Thank you Troop
90633 for your efforts.

Paws for Stress Helps Students
K College was the
site for a student
de-stress event
(and fundraiser) on
May 29th held by
the ZOOkeepers.
Along with support
from additional
volunteers, Paws
For Stress was a big
hit for both 2 and
4-footed
attendees. The
Quad was the
classroom as the
dogs enjoyed
teaching the students (wrapping up exams) to
relax.
The ZOOkeepers student organization, as
shelter trained volunteers, work all year with
the cats and dogs at the shelter as part of their
mission. During the year they also bring events
to campus to benefit all the students and
conduct fundraisers, like Paws For Stress, to
donate to the Shelter.
Have a great summer and we look forward to
seeing next year’s new leadership in the fall.
We’ll miss the graduates at our shelter;
knowing your good work will extend to new
communities as you being your next career
chapter. Congratulations to K’14 ZOOkeepers!

Greek Fest 2014
Thank you to Stacy’s organization for the
opportunity to be part of an awesome Arcadia
Festival 2014 Greek Fest. Whether it’s walking
dogs at the shelter or serving beer at a
festival - our volunteers have fun supporting
tomorrow’s rescues.
The generous donation to the SPCA of SWMI
was captured by the cast of volunteers serving
beverages the entire day. June 6th was the
perfect day, the music inspiring, the volunteers
extraordinary, and the beer was cold. OPA !
Girls on the Run
Cookies Benefit Paws
May 19th the Girls On
The Run from Winchell
Elementary/Section B
again showed their
community spirit with
a delicious bake sale.
The team was caught
in action as they held a bake sale to benefit
the SPCA at their school. Their huge grins
and big hearts showcase the great work of
all the school groups who shower the shelter
with their caring sprit all year. We are grateful
to live in a community with these leaders of
tomorrow!

Kuma
(formerly Timberline)
Submitted by: Karen Gershon
Dear Neighbors,
I have spent lots of time out here watching
the world go by….either in my yard, out on the
sidewalk, or up on my deck….
Read about Kuma’s story in the Chicago
Tribune here. Neighborhood unites in love and loss - of Kuma, West Lakeview’s polar bear
dog. By Barbara Brotman.
For many of you that have stopped to admire
me, pet me, or hug me, please know that it
was my favorite thing and I am so glad that I
could make so many of you smile, and I smiled
too.
My time here unfortunately was limited, but
memories never fade….
Please remember me fondly with love,
KUMA
