Celebrating Anniversaries, Embracing the Future
W
elcome to Randolph County, the Heart of North Carolina; filled with a history
that is a blend of both agricultural and industrial development. The area is unique in that it
has one of the oldest mountain ranges in the United States, the Uwharrie Mountains, and
two major rivers, the Deep River and the Uwharrie River.
Additionally, Randolph County is fortunate to be criss-crossed by two major interstates,
I-85 and I-73. Our heritage is punctuated by a long line of anniversaries that demonstrate
the significance of education and tourism going back more than 100 years. These include
Seagrove School’s 100th, Randolph Community College’s 50th, and the Heart of North
Carolina Visitors Bureau’s 15th anniversaries. Also of note, Asheboro’s Fall Festival is
celebrating 40, and the North Carolina Potters Conference is celebrating 25 years in 2012.
From my own experience, as I get older, these anniversaries occur faster and more
importantly, have more significance reminding us of our heritage and the importance
of celebrating the past while constantly looking to future development.

In order to maximize the potential for creating and enlarging Randolph County’s tourism destinations we must continue
to celebrate the accomplishments of the past while at the same time establishing new events and attractions that will
provide the anniversaries of the future. One of the new attractions opening this year in the northwest corner of
Randolph County is Linbrook Heritage Estate. This estate provides a unique opportunity to tour one of the largest
homes in the southeastern United States with more than 60 rooms, Linbrook Hall. The house is designed in the early
classical revival style found most prominently in the southern states beginning in approximately 1820. The home uses
the proportions developed by Italian renaissance architect Andres Palladio. Palladian proportions were used for critical
design proportions both inside and out. Linbrook Hall was a six year project designed to demonstrate the timeless beauty
of classical architecture. It contains architectural details found in many 18th century homes and contains antiques from
around the world. Linbrook Hall is located in the area that the Neal family’s ancestors settled in the late 1700s.
1
Also part of the Linbrook Heritage Estate is the Neal John Deere Tractor and Industrial Museum, which displays a
collection of rare tractors. All tractors are restored to like new condition and periodically the tractors are operated in
field demonstrations on the Linbrook Heritage Estate. The industrial display features as its centerpiece a 1926 return
tube boiler from the P&P Chair Company of Asheboro, made famous by the production of the Carolina Rocker used
by President John F. Kennedy. The boiler, used to produce the energy for the P&P Chair Company, has been relocated to
the Linbrook Heritage Estate and is in full operation. The boiler will be used in conjunction with an 1890s steam engine to
produce electrical power to power other museum exhibits such as an early 20th century sawmill and a sugar cane mill.
An additional attraction, the Hoover House, is at the heart of the Linbrook Heritage Estate. It is historically significant
because Hoovers were widespread throughout Randolph County. They were of German descent and the name was
Anglicized from Huber to Hoover. Andreas Huber emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania, then to Maryland. Later
Mr. Hoover migrated with his wife and 12 children to Randolph County. They settled one mile from the Hoover
House in 1763 when he built a gristmill at the confluence of the Uwharrie and Little Uwharrie Rivers. Five generations
later, President Herbert Hoover was a direct descendant of Huber. The Neal’s are also direct descendants and their
great-grandfather, Edd Hoover built the Hoover House. The Hoover house is a rare example of a home dating from
1905 that has survived with its original furnishings in place. The Neal Farm represents farm life in Randolph County
from 1905-1944. Through docent guided tours visitors will tour Hoover House and learn about its inhabitants and
their daily lives. The Hoover house has been lovingly restored to its original appearance. Many of Edd Hoover’s
hand built tools and early farm equipment are on display.
Visitors will certainly want to return time and time again to see the Linbrook Heritage Estate museum displays and
to experience the contrast between the grandeur of Linbrook Hall and the simpler life demonstrated at the Hoover
House that existed over 100 years ago.
Visit the Heart of North Carolina and come away with an appreciation for the significance of the agricultural and
industrial development of Randolph County coupled with its natural beauty.
Sincerely,
Jerry D. Neal

BOUT THE AREA
L
ocated in the “heart” or center of North Carolina, Randolph County is the 10th largest in geographic land
area in the state and includes Archdale, Asheboro, Franklinville, Liberty, Ramseur, Randleman, Seagrove, Staley and Trinity.
It is divided by two river basins: the Deep/Cape Fear, which flows into the Atlantic past Wilmington, and the
Uwharrie/PeeDee, which exits through Georgetown, South Carolina. Every visitor is first struck by the beauty of
its landscape. “It is said of Randolph that it is one county where every road is a scenic highway. Every mile has its view.
This combination of woods, of numerous streams, rolling hills swelling into mountain knobs and ridges, all interspersed
by occasional wide open lands or “savannahs,” as Lawson called the prairies, makes Randolph an exceedingly attractive
section,” said Our State magazine editor Bill Sharpe in 1958. The same is true today!
Festivals & Events
A number of local communities celebrate their heritage by hosting a variety of annual festivals and events. Christmas
on Sunset, in downtown Asheboro, the Bush Hill Heritage Festival in Archdale, and the Seagrove Pottery Festival
have all been chosen as a Top 20 Event in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society. The Asheboro Fall Festival
remains a popular annual event, along with the spring and fall Liberty Antiques Festivals, voted the Best Antiques
Show in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Museums & Attractions
Find what’s in your heart by exploring an assortment of museums and attractions unequal to any other area of
North Carolina! From an internationally acclaimed Zoo to the largest private collection of Harley-Davidson®
motorcycles in the country; a plane flown by Orville Wright; a museum honoring NASCAR legend, Richard Petty;
the only NASCAR-themed children’s camp in the world; the handmade pottery capital of the U.S.; and a tractor
museum located on the estate of one of the largest private homes in the Southeast.
Outdoor Fun
For those in search of outdoor adventure, leave the stress of the city behind as you discover one of North Carolina’s
two remaining historic covered bridges. Experience the thrill of a lifetime on a zipline voted a Top 100 Expo Adventure
in 2010. Hike America’s oldest mountain range, the Uwharries. Fish along 100 miles of beautiful shoreline on the new
3,000 acre Randleman Lake or tour an assortment of pick-your-own orchards and working farms.

The form of the 1909 building is reminiscent of the neighborhood of “American Foursquare” homes along nearby Worth Street. 145 Worth St, Asheboro –

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
EAGROVE
S
S
eagrove is the largest community of potters with the longest continual history of pottery making
in the United States. The ceramic history of the area began with the abundant and diverse natural
clay deposits found in the area. Native Americans were first to discover this resource and used it for
both functional and ceremonial objects.
The first immigrant potters, mostly English and German, arrived in the late 18th century from
Pennsylvania and Virginia. They probably settled first in the areas closest to the Great Wagon Road,
which ran from Pennsylvania to Georgia, later migrating to Seagrove. Potters arriving in Seagrove in
the late 1700s were quick to realize the value of the local clay first making redware that fired to a
reddish orange color. By the first half of the 19th century, many potters had switched to making the
higher fired salt glazed stoneware. The building of the old Plank Road, and later the emerging railroad
system, gave potters access to even wider markets and helped to establish Seagrove’s reputation as
a pottery town.
The combination of modern food preparation methods and the Industrial Revolution were devastating
to the potters. Because of their remote rural location and the local whiskey distilling industry, they
were able to survive, but were eventually crippled by the effects of Prohibition.
HeartofNorthCarolina.com • 800.626.2672
Driven by economic necessity, lack of other job opportunities, family pride, and their love of clay,
many potters worked on against the odds. Those who persisted in the Seagrove area were joined
in the early 20th century by Raleigh couple Jacques and Juliana Busbee, who appreciated the local
craftsmanship and used their marketing skills to promote Seagrove to a wider market. The increase
in travel by wealthier Americans and the new availability of non-local ceramic materials all contributed to
changes in Seagrove pottery styles and collectors embraced this work. By the late 1920s, Seagrove
pottery was well-known from the galleries of New York to the garden shops of Florida.
17
World War II ushered in a new era for Seagrove. In addition to sending a generation of potters off
to war, some of the materials for the new glazes were unavailable. By now it was obvious that
flexibility and change were essential elements of the Seagrove tradition, and the potters faced these
changes with confidence. The immediate solution was high volume production of small pieces for
the wholesale gift market. A potter might produce more than 500 pieces each day, all in the same
shape and size.
Throughout the 1950s, potters worked together to promote the area. The 1960s and 70s were
characterized by social changes across America with the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration bringing a
renewed interest in handcrafts. The development of ceramic arts programs by nearby community
colleges led to the training of many area residents and Seagrove potters continued to train their
children or other interested apprentices. Studio artists began to settle in the area bringing visible
changes to Seagrove throughout the remainder of the 20th century.
In 1982, local citizens, recognizing the strength of continuing to preserve the history and heritage of
their craft, began to celebrate annually the weekend before Thanksgiving by organizing the Seagrove
Pottery Festival. This festival weekend has now grown to include both the Seagrove Pottery Festival
and the Celebration of Seagrove Potters.
Today Seagrove is known as the handmade pottery capital of the United States where artisans
create handcrafted pottery inspired by the traditions that began here more than 200 years ago.
With nearly 100 shops and galleries scattered throughout the area, you will find everything from
traditional tableware to folk and collectible art pieces and historical reproductions!
