Just from July to September this year, we have already taken in over 100 kittens! They were mostly strays, some had mothers and some were motherless. While kittens are always adoptable, they are also the ones that involve a lot of vet expenses. This is because they are small and fragile, and can get sick easily. Many had contracted diseases from being outdoor, or from their mothers. Our vet bills are always the highest for the summer months! Donations and foster homes are always needed to meet with our needs. Please HELP us HELP. The PET FEST & WALKAHTON, our biggest fund raising event, took place on Saturday, Sept 26. We could not have asked for better weather! Participants enjoyed the activities while helping to raise funds for our animals. Pictures can be seen on Page 8 under NEWS & EVENTS. Although the weather is getting colder, we still need to work hard to raise funds for the animals! We will be having our first ‘GARAGE SALE’ on Saturday, October 17. We have also scheduled the yearly ‘PICTURE with SANTA’ on two Saturdays in December. Details of these two upcoming events are given on Page 9. Please come and support us. It does not have a shelter, business venue or paid staff. It receives no support from the Government, City or the SPCA. Without a shelter, MHS depends on the kindness of foster parents who open their heart and home to animals in need. By fostering a pet you are helping to SAVE a LIFE. We are friendly. We are just like any other coloured cats. We just want to be LOVED. We just want a HOME. Every year around Halloween time, many shelters suspend adoption of black cats. This is due to the rumours and fear that cats are tortured or even killed at the festive time. Extensive research shows that there is really no documentation on any cruelty to or sacrificing of black cats at this time of the year. Statistics on black cat torture during October are lacking. Most of the stories are myths. It probably is an urban legend. Let us turn this myth into a GOOD LUCK one! Good luck for the black cats and good luck for their adopters who have SAVED a LIFE (Karma!). Well, it depends on where you live! In the UK and Japan, black cats are supposed to bring you good luck. “There’s still a chance people will adopt black cats around Halloween time for decorations or abuse.” You asked. The answer is: “We SCREEN all the applicants for adoptions. We ask a lot of questions, and if someone comes in speaking, acting, or dressed in a way that would cause us to believe that the cat would not be safe, then we will not approve the adoption. STRICT SCREENING & COMMON SENSE is the key. If needed, a home visit would be done.” We have black cats/ kittens for adoption that have been waiting for homes for a long time. Please visit our four Cat Adoption locations as shown on this page. DUNDAS EAST ANIMAL HOSPITAL 905-803-8400 966 Dundas St (Tomken) Page 5 TOP 10 REASONS for DOG BITES Let’s face it. Dogs may bite! Many dog biting incidents can be prevented if people knew the causes for this behaviour. (1) POSSESSIVENESS All dogs are equipped with some level of possessiveness, whether it be of food, a toy, or their human. Any action that is perceived to take away the object of their desire can provoke biting. Be careful when approaching any animal that is feeding or interacting with an object. (2) SLEEEPING Never disturb a sleeping dog! The startled reflex is instinctive in animals, and it's not uncommon for a sleeping dog to bite when awakened by petting, kissing, or other physical interactions. This reaction is reflexive--not aggressive; it's important not to confuse the two. (3) PAIN OR INJURY Dogs can be very defensive when injured or in pain. Petting a painful area, inspecting an injured paw, or lifting a suffering animal is enough to produce an aggressive reaction in even the friendliest of dogs. (4) FEAR Fear aggression is very common. There are many triggers that can cause a fearful response. Anything from a blowing leaf to people wearing hats or men with beards! It’s not necessarily true that fearful dogs have been abused or traumatized. The main reason is lack of socialization. Socialization is SO important and improper socialization can make it difficult for the dog to accept new things. (5) THREATENED/TEASED Any dog who feels threatened could respond aggressively. Do not corner or make threatening gestures toward a dog as this may trigger a fear or stress response. Avoid exhibiting certain dominant behaviour such as making direct eye contact or direct approach, as this can be perceived as a challenge. Instead, remain still—or, if on the ground, curl up in a ball with your face and neck covered. Vigorous teasing can frustrate a dog, leading to a natural aggressive reaction. Knowing the signs of mood change—ears back, teeth showing, fur standing on end—is the best way of preventing play from turning to attack! (6) BAD ENERGY Dogs possess a keen sense for detecting mood, fear, and intention. They can feel your energy. It’s best to avoid dogs when you are angry, afraid etc. Your negative energy may trigger a negative response! (7) TRAINED FOR PROTECTION Some dogs have been trained to attack intruders, trespassers etc. Be mindful when entering another's property or approaching strangers in order not to accidentally provoke this attack reaction. (8) DISEASE OR MALNOURISHMENT Avoiding stray dogs as they might have diseases like RABIES, a disease that could cause a psychological condition that may lead to an unprovoked attack. Hunger can also cause aggression in extreme cases. (9) DOG FIGHTS Some of the most frequent instances of dog bites occur while breaking up dog fights. This usually results from desperate handlers reaching in to physically break up the fight, making their hands and arms vulnerable. Instead, first create a loud sound, such as a shout or a bang, to startle the animals. Water or a barrier inserted between the dogs may be effective. (10) MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL STABILITY Some dogs have developed deeply rooted aggression issues that are difficult to remedy or control due to improper past treatment, poor social development, or permanent damage due to disease. Participants were attracted to the variety of items available and their great prices! Come get great deals while helping the homeless animals! “PICTURE TAKING WITH SANTA” SHERIDAN NURSERIES will again host for our Society “PICTURE TAKING WITH SANTA’’ on: Saturday, Dec 5 11am-2:30pm Saturday, Dec 12 11am-2:30pm SHERIDAN NURSERIES 606 Southdown Road West Mississauga, Kaiyu, an animal lover from China’s Yunnan Province bought a pair of “puppies” as cubs in Vietnam from a vendor who said the animals would grow into lively, friendly dogs with big appetites. The babies certainly grew to be larger, livelier and hungrier, though they also started exhibiting considerably stranger behaviors. Regardless of his pets’ unusual habits, Kaiyu continued to love and care for his “dogs’’. Two years after buying the animals, Kaoyu realized the harsh and hairy truth when he saw a wildlife protection promotion regarding Asian black bears. He finally discovered that the two large dogs he had been raising for the past two years are actually Asian black bears! Since the bears are listed as a Class II protected species, Kaiyu decided to contact the authorities. The dogsturned-bears have now been moved to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre of Yunnan. Staff at the Center say the boy and girl pair arrived in good health and are adjusting well to their new living situation. DID YOU KNOW? A bee must visit 4,000 flowers in order to make one tablespoon of honey? A snail can sleep for three years? Lobsters can live up to 50 years? Cats rarely meow at each other. Meowing is reserved for "speaking" with humans? Page 10 HUMOUR TIME ‘’UMBRELLA LEASHES’’ NO, that umbrella is not upside down! ICE FISHING collar to lead the dog. Again, the voice said: "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE" Clearly flustered, she moves the stool to one last spot, sits down, and picks up her auger.
