DV8’S CORNER BY: DAVE CASELLA DIRECTOR OF MX BRANDS Welcome to the CSG update. We have the usual mayhem going on here. We are fresh off the Indianapolis Dealer Trade Show. The show was a little different this year. The new schedule with the show ending Sunday instead of Monday was better, and not having it be 5 degrees outside all week was great. The CSG brands really made the most of the week. DVS mad men Dano and Erik were on hand all weekend to help debut the K-Dub MSR/DVS Fourteen Collection. The interest in the Fourteen collection was phenomenal and with this being a limited offering I would order it now while you can get it...you have been warned! The new Spring Scan colorways that K-Dub, Wey and JG have been wearing were on showcase in the MSR booth also along with MSR’s new Metal Mulisha “Scope” boot that drew allot of attention. The Mulisha line continues The CSG staff was in full force to kill it for MSR. at the 2011 Indy Show Answer unleashed the Skullcandy gear & the new JS collection “purple haze gear” at the show, both of which were the talk of the booth. The Answer/Skullcandy relationship is really picking up steam and it’s really awesome to see Answer pushing the boundaries. The SKDY/Answer relationship extend past the gear, so get ready for some really cool tie ins between the two as we move forward. The Skullcandy/Answer Partnership was a huge hit Pro Taper debuted their new black colorway in the RS sprockets. They also had their new 2.0 bar pads and the Skullcandy grips and pads. PT continues to lead the hard parts industry in innovation and creativeness. Overall the show was a success for CSG as interest in the brands are at an all time high. I have to really thank the whole crew for putting in the extra effort all week. The buzz the CSG brands have right now make all the additional work well worth it. Within 24 hours of unpacking the trade show crates, we reloaded up everything in the CSG Vans to head off to The K-Dub collection goes the Oak Hill Amateur National. Answer, MSR and Pro live to rave reviews Taper are proud to return as title sponsors for the 35th Annual GNC International Motocross Finals at Oak Hill Raceway. The event is set to begin on March 15th and run through March 20th, just up the road from the Tucker Rocky Corporate Headquarters in Fort Worth, TX. You may even see TR’s head honcho Steve Johnson cruising the pits at Oak Hill, as he may or may not (I’m not telling) jump the fence that divides his property from the track! We sent Andy “Bakes” Bakken off this week to drive out there and if you want some good laughs make sure you follow his journey there and back on twitter. Hope all of you are watching the SX races. This is turning out to be one of the most exciting seasons in a long, long time. You have to give it up to JS who put in one hell of an effort in Daytona. The dude is an unreal rider, and remounting after a crash like that and then working his way into the top 10 to save championship points was just crazy. Even RC and Emig couldn’t believe what they were witnessing as they called the race. Also make sure you grab the April edition of TWMX. There is a “Riding Tips” section with Nick Wey and also some great photography of K-Dub riding out at McGrath’s private ranch. The shots were so good it earned Windham the poster for the month also. We have seen four different winners and up until the disaster that happened at Daytona a pretty close points battle. We haven’t seen racing this good in years. And to make it even better most of it can all be seen live on Speed or CBS each weekend. Not a bad time to be in if you’re a fan of SX. What’s even crazier to believe is that James Stewart as of last weekend is 26 points back of first. He has been in this situation before. Remember in 2009 he spotted everyone about twenty points right from the start. So it’s not like this is anything new to him. Like his butt patch said in Indianapolis ‘it ain’t over yet”. That’s why they go racing each weekend. Win or lose this series, the riding that James has displayed can only be described as amazing. In what other sport is there one athlete that is the only one that is able to do or attempt things week after week? Whether it was those quad sections at A2 or the wall jump at Daytona, he is able to see and put together sections that no other professional in our sport is even willing to attempt and yet JS will do it every lap in a twenty lap main. However with that ability comes a price and he has paid that price with valuable points throughout this series. So love him or hate him, for that you have to respect him! CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 03.16.11 BY: ROGER LARSEN PRO ATHLETE MANAGER In an incredibly stacked 2011 series, Kevin Windham continues to struggle to find that second a lap he has been looking for all year. Always the crowd favorite in any city the series goes. He does however always seem to win over the crowd with his huge transfer jumps, in the dark no less, during opening ceremonies. I think I have said this before but if you have yet to go to a race this year that is reason enough right there. Photos and the random you tubes clips just don’t do it justice. Nick Wey finally put in the ride he has been looking for. With a handful of finishes just outside the top ten he leaves Indy with an eight-place. NYK has found himself on a great team and a great bike. Also he has recently teamed up with long time friend and trainer Randy Lawrence. Expect to see some more strong finishes out of Nick these next few rounds. Also don’t forget MSR’s newest rider Josh Grant is still recovering from knee surgery after his crash at round two in Phoenix. He is heeling up fine and eager to get back to racing. He is expected to be back for the outdoors. That’s about all I have for now. See you in Jacksonville! PG 02 BACON BITS BY: ANDY BAKKEN AMATEUR ATHLETE MANAGER I’m traveling to the Oak Hill Amateur National. Answer, MSR and Pro Taper are proud to return as title sponsors for the 35th Annual GNC International Motocross Finals at Oak Hill Raceway. The event is set to begin on March 15th and run through March 20th. Make sure to follow my journey there, back and everything that happens in between on the Answer, MSR and Pro Taper facebook sites and twitter! Loading the CSG Vans for a long week of racing - Bakes CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 03.16.11 PG 03 CHAMP’S CHATTER BY:MSR RANDY VALADE MARKETING MANAGER Wow! What a crazy last few weeks here for the MSR crew. We recently returned from the Indy sales meeting, Atlanta and Daytona SX has come and gone and we are finishing up the entire 2012 line. This week’s installment will bring you info on the events above along with other useful knowledge about the MSR brand. INDY DEALER EXPO First off let’s start with the Indy Trade show. This is always a great event to showcase our new spring products. This year as most of you already know, MSR is introducing 2 new colors of the NXT Scan, which are called Burst and Fusion. In addition to those MSR has joined forces with DVS to introduce the K-Dub collection, which will consist of 2 shoes, 2 hats and a small line of casual apparel. We had the DVS crew (Dano and Erik) on hand to answer any questions and give the dealers a better understanding of DVS. Lastly, we are introducing the new MSR/ MM Scope boot that received a ton of compliments at the show. All of these products are just weeks away from shipping and we are really advertising these to get everyone excited about these great products. Check out the video below for an in depth look at all the new products. Nick Wey is starting to get his flow going. He is just on the brink of breaking into that top 10 and it’s only a matter of time till he does. Wey has been dealing with some poor starts but has been putting a bunch of time into those these past few weeks. I predict he is top 10 this weekend! Here is a photo of Wey from the Daytona Speedway. RACING NEWS In racing news, Kevin Windham has been recouping from his big Houston crash the last couple weeks. I spoke with K-dub after Daytona and he tells me everything is starting to feel good again. He had been nursing a bruised shoulder and wrist the last few races and is finally feeling normal again. Look for Kevin to be back in the mix come Indy. I have attached a few photos of Windham from Daytona as well as a link to others. MSR’s Josh Grant as many of you know has had knee surgery. The surgery went well and he is full steam ahead on returning for the outdoor season. Stay tuned for a video featuring Josh on his comeback. CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 03.16.11 PG 04 CHAMP’S CHATTER - CONTINUED TALKING ABOUT TAKING THINGS MAINSTREAM... MSR supplied ESPN with photos of the K-Dub collection and they ran a great post on it. Make sure to check it out: MSR’s new ad campaign has been going over very well with the magazine guys. We went with a dark background that really makes the gear standout on the page along with how each rider affects the brand. MSR, “One Brand Fits All”. I have attached the first two ads and there will be another two hitting the news stands soon. OTHER RACING NEWS Amateur racing is back for the 2011 season. This week there are two races that the kids could choose from. Mill Creek is one of the races running this week and from the sounds of it, the rain has not stopped. The Freestone national is the other national taking place in Texas and looks like it has turned out to be a great event. Next week the 35th Annual Oak Hill National will get underway and MSR is one of the title sponsors. If you are in the area be sure to stop by and check out all the events and new apparel that will be taking place throughout the week. Our amateur athlete manager, Andy Bakken is on hand to assist all our riders and make sure that everyone has a great time. That’s it for me this week. Make sure you stay up to date on all the MSR happenings by following us on twitter at twitter.com/msrmx and facebook at facebook.com/msrmxfans. So long from Corona! CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 03.16.11 PG 05 SIX NINE SUMMARY After quite a long break from the world of CSG and the domain of MSR Off-Road, we have a few events as of late to get you all caught up and feeling warm & fuzzy inside. DUVAL TOPS HARE SCRAMBLE PODIUM With the start of the GNCC series a mere 3 weeks away, the MSR Am Pro Yamaha boys hit the opening round of the Eastern AMA Hare Scramble series. Grabbing a 4th place start and keeping a solid pace, Thad would be swapping positions within the top 4 spots and waiting patiently for the right time to strike. At just over the 2 hour mark, the amateur riders are pulled off and Thad knew that would mean clear sailing out front with no lappers. Wanting to get to the lead and in his own words, Thad “pinned it”, got to the lead, took some deep breathes and held on to take the checkers by more than 30 seconds over 2nd position. BORICH TAKES GNCC OPENER MSR’s Chris Borich took the first step in taking his third consecutive GNCC title by pulling down the win at the 2011 GNCC opener in FL. Just as he did so many times last season, Chris would use a strong last lap push to take the lead, pull a gap and cross the finish well ahead of 2nd place. Running in second position for the majority of the race, Chris was never more than 2 seconds behind the leader when they came through the scoring tower and found himself in the perfect position on the 5th and final lap. Taking over 1st position when the leader had an unfortunate get-off, Chris would hammer for the remainder of the lap and took the checkers by more the 20 seconds over his nearest competitor. FORSBERG SECOND AT GNCC OPENER That’s right folks, MSR Darling of the dirt bike world Maria Forsberg, would have to settle for 2nd place at the opening round of the GNCC series. Coming by the scoring barrels after the opening lap, Maria would be in second position just 2 seconds back and all over the rear wheel of the leader. Taking the lead on the next lap, she would stretch out over a minute ahead of second place. In putting down the hard laps she had, Maria would fall victim to the heat and humidity she’s not accustomed to living in the Pacific Northwest, which would relegate her to the runner up position. WEBSITES www.msrmx.com CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 03.16.11 BY:MSRMATT EAGLETON MARKETING COORDINATOR WHIBLEY, ASHBURN PODIUM OMA OPENER With the start of the GNCC series a mere 3 weeks away, the MSR Am Pro Yamaha boys hit the opening round of the Eastern AMA Hare Scramble series. Not getting quite the start of his teammate, Jordan Ashburn would have to make more passes to find his way towards the front. Once he found his way to the 3rd place position, the lead 2 riders were long gone. Jordan would keep plugging away putting in strong laps, but would eventually cross the finish line nearly 6 minutes behind the leaders – which just goes to show how important a good start is when the track in one-lined and a rocky mess. All in all it was a great day for the MSR Am Pro Yamaha squad. AM PRO YAMAHA GNCC OPENER With all the prep and racing to get ready for the start of GNCC’s, it’s terrible when things just don’t go your way. MSR’s Paul Whibley grabbed the holeshot of the 3-hour afternoon race only to get pitched off the track and narrowly miss a head-on with a tree, although clipping it with his elbow and radiator. Doing extensive damage and losing quite a lot of fluid, Whibs decided he needed to head into the pits before the motor would suffer terminal damage and end his day. With the new radiator on it was time to get going, but starting from beyond last place would mean having to deal with lots of people and making sketchy passes in the dust. All said and done, Paul was able to move ahead to 8th place and salvage some points for the championship. While not having the misfortune as early as Whibley, Thad Duvall would be a front runner for the first few laps until a miscue would force him to park his machine after a disastrous fourth lap. In his first GNCC outing with the MSR Am Pro Yamaha squad, Jordan Ahsburn had a decent start to his day and came through after the first lap in 5th place. While still trying to get used to the smaller 250 machine (Jordan is used to the 450) he was just a little off the pace in the fast high-speed pace of the FL sand and is looking forward to the more traditional type of GNCC courses. MORE ON THE YAMAHA GNCC Until next time. We are already 2 months into the year and it seems to get crazier and crazier as time passes by. From the Supercross title race heating up to the numerous shows and events that we have going on, finding time to hit the slopes and even the river coming up, has been very hard. It is all good through, let’s dive right into this weeks update: BY: NICK McBRIDE ANSWER MARKETING COORDINATOR SPRING PHOTO SHOOT INDY 2011 It is hard to believe that the 2011 Dealer Expo in Indy is already behind us. I would first like to thank everyone who helped us out in making this year’s event a great success; all of our Reps, Tucker Rocky employees and everyone who stopped by the booth to check out the new stuff. The response that we got from our 2011 spring gear was awesome. Everyone seems to really be into the direction that we are going with the brands and the new collaboration with Skullcandy. I hope everyone was able to stop by the booth and get some Skullcandy headphones as those thing we disappearing rather quickly. Just incase you did not get a chance to stop by, we have a couple of new things that we are going to attach to our spring product line this year. First, our Skullcandy pants and jersey are going to have a 20% off coupon on them to purchase some sweet Skullcandy swag. This is something that we have worked out with Skullcandy to give an extra reward/incentive when you buy the gear. Not to be left out, we have worked out a cool attachment to the Spring JS collection with Red Bull. All of the Purple Haze pants are going to be coming with a Red Bull energy shot and a couple of unique JS7 stickers. So make sure to check out the gear when it comes in and help us get the word out! Last week we put together a photo shoot of all of our top freestyle riders and a couple of our amateur hotshots in the A class this year. Todd Potter, Myles Richmond, Mike Mason, Chris Plouffe, Tyler Bereman and Brian Sjogren were able to come out for our festive shoot. We had the opportunity to head down to Todd Potter’s house and get some crazy photos that we are planning on using in up coming ad’s as well as updating our website with some pretty sick images for you guys to download. Make sure to be on the look out, as there will be more of these images up here soon. MORE PHOTOS FROM POTTER’S HOUSE MORE PHOTOS FROM INDY 2011 CSG BI-WEEKLY UPDATE 03.16.11 PG 07 McRIDE’S WORLD - CONTINUED JAMES WINNING AND CHAMPIONSHIP HUNT! As most of you have seen, unless you have been under a rock, James has been getting back into the swing of things. Winning 3 of the first 7 races so far this year has been awesome, but that is not to say that he has had some adversity too. As the gate dropped for the final race at Anaheim in 2011, James grabbed the holeshot and never looked back. For 20 laps, Stewart continued to ride mistake free and took the A2 win in dominating fashion. Then it was off to Houston. The Houston Supercross race proved to be one James and us would rather forget. After a first corner crash, things looked to be heading in the right direction as James had moved his way through the field. Then came the crash heard around the world, well maybe not, that pretty much-ended James night and the relinquishment of the series points lead. Next we were on to sunny San Diego California, right? San Diego Supercross started out looking like it was going to be a nice day. Then the skies opened up and the rain was a coming. With an abbreviated practice schedule, Answer’s Stewart was still able to pull the fastest qualifying lap time of the day and put himself in the drivers seat for the night’s events. As the Main Event began, track conditions started to worsen. To make things more difficult James had a disappointing start, where he rounded the first corner just inside of the top ten. For the 15 laps of the race, Stewart pushed on and worked his way through the mud up to second place. Everything looked to be in place for James to come away from San Diego with a 2nd place when an unfortunate stall in Lap 16 pushed him back two spots to fourth place. Shortly after, James was able to take advantage of another rider’s mistake and capture the final spot on the podium as well as gaining valuable points in the series point’s race. “The track was gnarly and I didn’t have it tonight,” Stewart said. “I gave it my best, but my best just wasn’t good enough.” Then came Atlanta. Enough said there. The stage was set for Daytona and it looked like James was ready for redemption. As the gates dropped for the Main Event, Stewart quickly jumped out to the lead and looked like he had everything in the bag. However, that all changed when Stewart made a misjudged an approach to a rhythm section that resulted in one of the hardest crashes I have seen in some time. In true champion spirit, Stewart remounted and returned to the race, working his way from last to an incredible ninth place finish, salvaging precious points in the race for the Championship. Stewart still maintains second place in the series with 173 points, now 23 points shy of the lead. Looks like we are in for a fight! LATEST ADs & WEB BANNERS Well, well, time for a change. We always want to make sure that we are producing the up to date and current material possible and these latest creations from the crew are just that. We have totally revamped our Web banner and come up with a couple of design that are pretty cool. With that we have also come up with a new look to our ads that we are going to be running in the next couple of months. So make sure to be on the look out for these items and let us know what you think on our Facebook! Well, that is what I have for this weeks adventure into the world of Answer. Stay tuned to our next update as I will have some photos from a Region 7 ride out west here and some other cool things we have going on in our world.
