For a 105 years, Scouting's magic has been rooted in adventure! Be it the
Cub Scout who finds fun in a mud puddle, the Scout who experiences the
rush of an Order of the Arrow Call Out Ceremony, or a Venturer who finds
their own leadership qualities while on a horseback trek. Kids have a
natural need to have adventures and the Hoosier Trails Council is excited to
offer just that. Studies have proven that extended participation in Scouting
will help young people to be successful later in life. Adults that were
involved in our program as kids agree that they participated for the fun, but
along the way they learned habits of strong character, how to get along

Camp Louis Ernst Profile
Over the years, thousands have walked through these doors with the Scouting Spirit
blazing in their hearts. Since 1929 this council asset has enabled our program to
flourish. For more than 40 years the property served as the primary summer camp
for then the Hoosier Hills Council. In the 1970s two councils merged to from the
present day Hoosier Trails Council and Camp Louie shifted it’s focus to serving as a
primitive weekend camping facility.
Historical points of interest include the Irene Dunn Gateway which was funded by
the late actress who was a friend of the Ernst family. Also a replica of the Statue of
Liberty is present at camp, which was part of a patriot campaign in the 1940s. There are also several
additional tribute markers scattered around the property.
Today, Louie is used many weekends throughout the year and is looked after by our Caretaker, Mark Auxier.
Thanks to Tony Steinhardt, Paul Cronen, and the Jefferson County Community Foundation, we presently are
wrapping up work on installing permanent generators that will provide on-demand power to the Winter
Cabin and the Dining Hall. A wood-burning stove is being added to the Dining Hall to improve winter usage.
Additionally, final clean up is being done to close out our recent timber harvest.
This property offers a great experience for Scouting units and you don’t want to miss the orienteering
course. We are blessed to have a dedicated team of volunteers that help support the camp, which is
coordinated by Don Riley. Future projects that are being developed include replacing the roof and windows
on the Caretaker Home.

Nischa Chuppecat Celebrates the Order of the Arrow Centennial Anniversary
This has been a memorable year of celebrating all that is great about our
Brotherhood during the 100th Anniversary of the Order of the Arrow.
Beyond our normal Nischa Chuppecat fellowship, we have been blessed
with having the ARROWTOUR stop in our council at Indiana University, all
of the awesomeness of NOAC, and being awarded an OA Service Grant
aimed at improving programming at Maumee Scout Reservation (MSR).
As a part of our celebration we have constructed the MSR Centennial Stairs
that lead to the Shooting Sports Program Area and the Order of the Arrow
Ceremonial Circle. Informational signs have been incorporated into this
camp improvement that share the history of the Order and our Lodge. This
project highlights the strength of our bond of brotherhood and proudly
showcases our pride in a hundred years of service.
The funding we have received to build these steps is about half of what
they cost and we would like to give you an opportunity to fully fund the
Centennial Stairs. We have a goal of raising $5,000 through our Lodge
membership and ask that you consider joining us in support of this effort.
Those who make a pledge of $25 or more will receive a commemorative
Centennial Stairs Patch. Lodge members will receive a letter on how they
can assist this project and more details will be available at our fall events.
Property Manager Truck Secured
Thanks to a generous donation, a much needed vehicle has been
purchased for our Property Manager. We have been struggling to make
due with a 1996 truck that had some “rough camp miles” on it. Necessary
investments have been made in recent years to support our properties,
which enable quality
programming to occur;
however, up this point
we had not been able to
acquire this vehicle.
Donor contributions go a
long way in making the
Scouting magic happen.

Great Recent Additions to MSR
Sometimes it is difficult to keep up with the improvements at MSR. Recently
there have been several projects completed:
Thanks to a grant from the Jackson County
Community Foundation, a new emergency
siren has been installed. As a part of this
project expanded electrical service has been
added to the maintenance shop and the Union
Building.
This summer new convection ovens were
purchased that
enable our kitchen
staff to improve
their production
and this
equipment brings
added safety for our employees and volunteers.

the Chapel has been re-sided, as you see in the
