HEMPSTEAD HAPPENINGS OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2011 Greater New York Never Forgets th September 11 marked the tenth year since the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. The Salvation Army of Greater New York Division offered many services for those looking to commemorate the anniversary. Page 2 Hempstead Hosts Street Fair Hempstead welcomed the neighborhood to a street fair th Saturday September 10 to enjoy tasty snacks and carnival games along with a clown show and music played by a Hempstead Corps Band ensemble. This street fair helped the transition from Summer vacation into the new season. Soldiers of the Hempstead Corps were invited to distribute water at the memorial service at Point Lookout Beach in Long Island at 7:30am. Guests were given small American flags and a single red or white carnation. To close the service, guests were asked to write a name or note on the slip of paper attached to their flag and place it, along with the carnation, in front of the memorial statue (at left). The Salvation Army New York Staff Band (pictured above) and the Eastern Territorial Songsters, presented music at the afternoon open-air service in front of the Centennial Memorial Temple on 14th Street in Manhattan. Remembering Christiaan Sharp Christiaan Sharp was promoted to glory in late August. It was a deeply saddening shock to many, including his Hempstead corps family. Christiaan was a Senior Soldier, a member of the adult Sunday school Bible class, and a commissioned flag bearer at Hempstead Citadel before leaving Hempstead at the beginning of August to undertake responsibilities in the West. Dr. Charles Stanley (above) served as guest speaker at the evening “Service of Healing & Remembrance” held at the Centennial Memorial Temple on 14th Street in Manhattan. The same venue served as a Family Support Center which streamed live the national memorial service of lower Manhattan His Hempstead corps family gathered together on Wednesday evening, September 7th, for a Memorial Service held at Hempstead Citadel. As a family, Hempstead took the time to honor the memory of its brother in Christ. All were welcomed. Many friends appeared to honor Christiaan’s life.
