FEELING THE HEAT: Cillian
Murphy stars in Sunshine
NEW thriller Sunshine,
thankfully, is not a typical sci-fi
movie.
Set against the vast, dark
backdrop of space, there is not
an alien in sight in this visually
stunning film.
Public opinion has been mixed
on this one, but Sunshine is a
smart flick well worth
appreciating on the big screen.
Set 50 years into the future,
the sun is dying and the people
of Earth are building snowmen in
the dark as their planet freezes.
With the clock ticking on
earth's life expectancy a team of
scientists are packed off to plant
and detonate a bomb within the
sun which will, in theory, restore
the sun's natural state.
Knowing that the crew who
attempted the same mission
seven years earlier never
delivered the goods and
disappeared, tensions fray
between the eight-man team
who are well aware that they
alone are mankind's last hope.
Then, just days away from
HERE COMES THE SUN: One of the crew faces the sun.
reaching their target, a distress
call is picked up from the
previous mission's ship...
The crew is made up of the
stereotypes you'd expect from a
sci-fi thriller- a quiet hero, a
flawed but noble leader, an
argumentative alpha-male and a
coward.
Their characters are not
explored in much depth which is
a bit of a let down because there
is a lot of scope for psychological
development during their
claustrophobic and isolated
mission.
Instead, British director Danny
Boyle throws us into the action
straight away with very obvious
inspiration from the Alien
franchise (of which Boyle is a
self-confessed fan).
The actors' performances are
first-rate which gives credence
to the unimaginative character
choices and what is a pretty
implausible plot twist.
THE GAZETTE
AMAZING GRACE (PG)
Ioan Grufford stars in this
biopic of how a politician in
the 19th century (William
Wilberforce) looked to try and
deal with the slave trade.
★★★
Hemel Hempstead
Plus our leading man Capa
(the gorgeous Cillian Murphy) is
perfectly cast as the quiet,
somewhat unhinged, would-be
saviour of mankind.
So much about Sunshine is
good, it’s packed with intelligent
questions of life and death,
sanity, and arguments of science
versus religion. But Boyle does
go a bit Hollywood at the end.
It's a stunning and clever
movie that seems chained to a
number of sci-fi stereotypes and
gimmicks which could have been
avoided.
But it's certainly thought
provoking and will probably have
you feeling as close to crazy as
the crew by the finale.
Sunshine is worth watching,
especially at the cinema to fully
appreciate its impressive visuals.
I'd advise anyone who loves
movies to catch it while it’s on
the big screen and join the
debate.

MR BEAN’S HOLIDAY (PG)
Rowan Atkinson’s fun accident-prone character returns
in this second movie. This time
the hapless hero gets up to
mischief during a European vacation. The humour is somewhat limited, but there are still
some good moments to be had.
