SPOTT 2009 The Humane International Society of the USA and the Tobago branch of the TTSPCA held free clinics to spay/neuter the dogs on the Island of Tobago on 11th and 12th November, 2009. FLYER ADVERTISING – SPOTT PROGRAMME REGISTRATION took place one week before the clinics at Gulf City Lowlands Mall We held 3 clinics this year: •

One at Hope Farm clinic One at the TTSPCA Shelter Clinic One at a venue at Crown Point 100 dogs and l cat were spayed/neutered. The representatives Kelly Coladarci and Jessica Higgins of the Humane Society International reported “the Registration process was one of the best they had seen in all of their projects – very organized. Dr. Paul Crooks is to be congratulated on his organizational skills and his long hours of work prior to the event, working out spreadsheets allocating dogs/vets/assistants to each clinic and Roger Williams, TTSPCA member for his paper work matching numbers on cages with numbers on dog collars and much more. Members of the SPOTT project team, together with volunteers worked very hard, advertising on radio and tv, distributing flyers and banners etc. doing TV and radio presentations, to make dog owners aware of the importance of the spay/neuter programme. This is the second year of a three year programme and our SPOTT logo was recognized and people were aware of what it stands for “SPAYING PREVENTSOVERPOPULATION IN TRINIDAD ANDTOBAGO” and were eager to register their dogs for the free clinics. Who could forget the 17 vet students who made the journey to Tobago by boat from Trinidad and were an enormous help in assisting the Veterinarians. A special thanks to the HSI team of Dr. Deonanan, Dr. Millar and Jessica and Kelly. The many volunteers who assisted in making SPOTT 2009 successful are too numerous to mention but you are all very special people. We are very grateful for the assistance received from the Divisions of Agriculture and Tourism. From Channel 5 our local TV Station and Radio Tambrin, our local Radio station and the Tobago News. C.I.L. and VEMCO who sponsored tee‐shirts and dog food. The Lowlands Gulf City Mall for allowing us a space to have registration. The Conrado Beach Resort who accommodated our visiting Veterinarians and Humane Society representatives Shirley and Lizzie who also gave accommodation to some of the students and the many kind people who supplied all of us with food and beverages throughout the two days. This is the continuation of our efforts to solve the stray dog problem in Tobago and although the 100 dogs who were operated on were ‘owned’ dogs most dogs are allowed to breed continuously and many of the unwanted pups become “stray dogs”. The interest in the project SPOTT and the free clinics demonstrated to us that many Tobagoians are interested in the welfare of their animals, We have also started a programme in schools called “SHEP” to educate our children on Humane Welfare and respect for animals and the need to vaccinate, worm and provide basis treatments for our pets.
