Jurnee
Smollett
URNEE Smollett-Bell first captured the
attention of audiences in 1992, when, as
6-year-old Jurnee Smollett, she played
recurring roles on Hanging with Mr.
Cooper (1992) and Full House’ (19921994). Critics took serious notice of her with the
big-screen one-two punch of Jack’ (1996) and
Eve’s Bayou’ (1997).
Smollett-Bell’s career never skyrocketed, but
unlike many former child stars she never stopped
working. Her impressive list of credits includes
Cosby (1998-2000), Roll Bounce (2005), The
Great Debaters (2007), Friday Night Lights
(2007-2009), The Defenders (2010-2011), the
short-lived Do No Harm (2013) and Tyler Perry’s
newest film, Temptation: Confessions of a Mar-riage Counsellor.
Now 26, Smollett is an experienced actress, a
gorgeous young woman and even a wife, having
married musician Josiah Bell in 2010. Speaking
by telephone from her Los Angeles home, Smol-lett-Bell says that it was her good fortune that the
“child star’’ label never quite applied to her.
“I was a child who acted,’’ she says. “Some
kids have baseball, Little League, as their pas-sion or hobby. Acting has been my passion and
my hobby, but my childhood was filled with so
many other things, and I had my mom, my family
and a few select mentors who were my village,
like Samuel L Jackson and Alfre Woodard and
LaTanya Richardson Jackson.
“My mom had me volunteering at a very
young age and becoming a peer educator,’’
Smollett-Bell continues. “So I knew how to stay
grounded, and I realised that there’s such a big-ger world outside of the industry. I just didn’t
have the typical child-star life. I had a really full,
normal childhood.’’
Now, though, Smollett-Bell could be on the
cusp of something big. She stars in Tempta-tion: Confessions of a Marriage Counsellor, the
new film from the dependably provocative Tyler
Perry. The March 29 release casts her as Judith,
a young marriage counsellor who has herself
been married for six years to Brice (Lance Gross).
He’s the only man she’s ever been with, so she’s
thrown off guard when she meets Harley (Robbie
Jones), a handsome billionaire who pretty much
sweeps her off her feet.
“Harley whispers things in her ear about her
husband, telling her that she deserves better,’’
Smollett-Bell says, “and Brice has been forgetting
her birthday and neglecting her and is starting to
take her for granted because they’ve been togeth-er for so long. They’re becoming more like room-mates. So Judith finds herself in this triangle, and
she thinks Harley is going to offer her everything
that’s missing in her life, but there’s a whole lot
more to the story.
Jurnee Smollett (right) with Lynn Whitfield (left) in the
1997 film Eve’s Bayou, began her career as a child star.
“It was interesting to me because Judith has
dreams of being a great marriage counsellor, and
yet she can’t even make her own marriage work,’’
Smollett-Bell says. “She can’t apply what she’s
been taught at school to her own life.
“A lot of people experience that,’’ the actress
continues. “There are classes that people take,
self-help books they read and just a lot of infor-mation out there about how to have a healthy re-lationship, but then half of Americans are getting
divorced. So it’s not so easy, and Judith struggles
with a lot of the things people struggle with, like
insecurity and self-doubt.’’
Smollett-Bell heaps praise on both of her
leading men, Gross and Jones, calling them “so
professional and so present.’’ Temptation’ is eve-ry inch a Tyler Perry movie, however, and even
when – as in this case – he doesn’t appear on
screen, he’s always the leading man in his films,
their most dominant presence. Some people love
his films and others detest them, but there’s no
denying that he’s a force to be reckoned with in
the movie industry, particularly as one of the few
people who makes film by African-Americans,
about African-Americans and for African-Ameri-can audiences.
“I was definitely aware of Tyler Perry,’’ Smol-lett-Bell says. “It’s funny, because I was asleep
one day and I got a call from an Atlanta number.
The guy on the other end said, ‘Hi, may I speak
with Jurnee?’ I said, ‘Speaking.’ He said, ‘Hi,
Jurnee, this is Tyler Perry.’

“I was like, ‘Shut up, no way. This is
not Tyler Perry,’’’ she recalls. “I thought
it was one of my brothers playing a joke
on me. Tyler started laughing and said,
‘Yes, it is, sweetie. Were you asleep?’ I
said, ‘Yes,’ in my groggy voice, and he
told me to go back to sleep and call him
back.
“I hung up the phone,’’ Smollett-Bell
continues, “and my husband said to me,
‘Was that really Tyler Perry?’ I said ‘Yes.’
He said, ‘Girl, you better wake up and
call that man back.’
“I’d wanted to be a part of a film of
his for a while,’’ the actress says. “He’d
actually cast me in something before, but
I couldn’t do it because I was still shoot-ing Friday Night Lights. So I was glad
this one worked out.’’
What was the experience like?
“He runs such a great set,’’ Smol-lett-Bell says. “I was really impressed by
not just the director in him, but by the
producer in him. He knows every single
thing that’s going on, who’s working,
who should be wrapping, what time we
have to get off the clock, and then he can
still have a director’s conversation with
you about the choices as an actor you
want to make in a scene.
“I was surprised at how much of a
collaborator he was willing to be,’’ she
adds. “Honestly, people had told me sev-eral different things about him. I’d heard
that he wasn’t much of a collaborator,
and my experience was the opposite.
He’d welcome any questions, sugges-tions or input. He was so open to making
this the best film it could be. Tyler kept
a great set, and I really enjoyed working
with him.’’
Smollett-Bell next will be seen on
True Blood, joining the cast as a regu-lar when the HBO show returns for its
sixth season. She’s been cast as Nicole, a
do-gooder activist who tries to organise
Jurnee Smorllett in a still from the film The Great Debaters.
A still from the film Temptation: Confes-sions of a Marriage Counsellor.
all the supernatural creatures and help
secure their rights.
“It’s actually great to come onto a
show that’s been on awhile,’’ the ac-tress says. “I did that with Friday Night
Lights, which was in its fourth season
when I got there. The cast, the crew,
everyone’s already in their rhythm. And
in both cases I’ve been really lucky that
they have gone out of their way and
made such an effort to make me feel like
I’m at home.
“The interesting thing about it is that
my character on True Blood is a newbie,’’
Smollett-Bell continues. “She’s coming to
Bon Temps for the first time, so anything
I feel about being the new person on set,
I just add it to my character.’’
Looking to the future, the young
actress hopes eventually to add writing
and perhaps directing to her repertoire.
Right now, though, she’s content acting.
“It’s like food for my soul when I’m
able to express something or discover
something about myself through my
characters,’’ Smollett-Bell says. “I’ve
been doing this for my entire life, liter-ally, and I’m still doing it because I still
love it.’’

Leno makes meal of NBC
bosses in monologue
AP
J
AY Leno is keeping up a com--
edy assault on his NBC bosses
even after being treated to a
make-nice dinner.
During his monologue, the
Tonight Show host asked his Burbank
studio audience if they’d heard about
his “alleged feud” with NBC.
Leno started taking on-air potshots
at the network this month amid reports
that the network plans to replace him at
Tonight with Jimmy Fallon.
According to a NBC transcript, Leno
said that he had dinner with a “bunch
of NBC executives” who offered to make
things up to him: He and his wife are
going on an all-expenses paid carnival
cruise, he joked.
In February, passengers endured
five nightmarish days on a crippled Car-nival Cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico.
In another wisecrack, Leno cited
news reports of a Canadian man who
had a knife pulled from his back after
three years. Sniped Leno: “He must
have worked at NBC, too.”
NBC confirmed this week it’s cre-ating a new studio for Fallon in New
York, where he hosts Late Night. But
the network did not comment on a
report that the digs at its Rockefeller
Plaza headquarters may become home
to a transplanted, Fallon-hosted To-night.
This isn’t the first time the Tonight
stage has been used for a workplace
dispute. In 2010, when Conan O’Brien
briefly took over as Tonight host and
Leno was moved to prime-time at NBC,
the two traded on-air barbs.
Although late-night hosts are known
for needling their network bosses, the
timing of Leno’s latest jabs seemed to
make NBC’s executives particularly un-comfortable and they asked him to stop.
They don’t want a repeat of the publicly
messy turnover of just three years ago.
The 62-year-old Leno’s current
contract expires next year. For NBC,
the 38-year-old Fallon represents a
bid to launch a next-generation host
for Tonight - although Leno has kept
the show No. 1 in the ratings despite a
challenge from Jimmy Kimmel’s ABC
show, which was moved back an hour to
compete with it.
“You know the whole legend of St
Patrick, right? St Patrick drove all the
snakes out of Ireland - and then they
came to the United States and became
NBC executives,” Leno joked on
the show.

Kelly Brook warned by boyfriend’s
ex-lover
ACTRESS Kelly Brook has received
a warning from boyfriend Danny
Capriani’s ex-partner Jasmine Waltz,
that she will not be treated well by
him for long.
According to Waltz, who hooked
up with Capriani for a night before
he patched up with Brook again,
the footballer has a tendency to
treat women according to his mood,
Kelly Brook
reports thesun.co.uk. “He is the least
likely guy I know to have a proper relationship. I have
experienced it first-hand. One minute he was crazy about
me and then the next he was trying to hook up with other
girls,” Waltz said.
“I don’t know Kelly, but I would warn her that Danny
is not the man to be with if she is looking for a long-term,
committed partner,” she added.
Waltz even went on to say that she feels sad for Brook.
“Kelly should know that in my eyes, Danny has no way of
holding down a serious relationship. I feel sorry for Kelly and
am pretty sure he is the kind she cannot tame,” she said.
Pamela Anderson’s Malibu home on sale
BAYWATCH star Pamela Ander-son has put her three-bedroom
home here on the market for
$7.7 million.
The actress has owned the
property since 2000, and she
has spent a small fortune turn-ing it into an eco-home, adding
sustainable teak decor and solar
panels, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
If the house goes for the
current market price, Anderson
will make huge profit, as she had
reportedly paid $1.8 million for
Pamela Anderson
the place 13 years ago, according
to property website realestalker.com.
The Malibu Colony property was designed by architect
Philip Vertoch in the late 1950s.
Anderson previously put the place up for rent in
2011 for $75,000-a-month and she placed it on available
for lease in 2012. Last week, Anderson posted photos
of the home on her Twitter page in a bid to speed up
the sale.

Sanjay Dutt will complete
Zanjeer, Policegiri, P.K.
IANS
A
CTOR Sanjay Dutt, who has been
sentenced to five years in jail in
the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, has
assured the makers of his three
under-production films - Zanjeer,
Policegiri and P.K. - that he will complete the
projects before he is imprisoned.
The Supreme Court last week upheld
Sanjay’s conviction under the Arms Act for
illegally possessing weapons, and sent him to
five years’ imprisonment. The 53-year-old has
already spent 18 months in jail. He was con-victed by the TADA court for illegal possession
of a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle.
Sanjay met the filmmakers at his residence
in Pali Hill and assured them that he will com-plete their projects.
A friend of the actor, who spent the entire
day and night at the Dutts’ residence, said:
“Yes, Sanju Sir has made a commitment.
Zanjeer requires three more days, Rajkumar
Hirani’s P.K. requires seven more days and
Policegiri needs 17 days to be completed.”
“In spite of the shock that he went through
on (March 21) Thursday (of hearing the hon-ourable Supreme Court’s verdict), Sanju Sir
assured the Zanjeer director Apoorva Lakhia,
P.K. maker Rajkumar Hirani and the Policegiri
producer TP Aggarwal that their films would
be completed. Sanju Sir told them, ‘Boss, let’s
complete the shooting and my dubbing. Pataa
nahin aage kya hoga (Who knows what will
happen in future)’.”
Sanjay is expected to get started on the
projects this week, as he has been asked by the
Supreme Court to surrender within four weeks
of the verdict.
“The commitment stunned all of us,” said
“Yes, Sanju Sir has
made a commitment.
Zanjeer requires three
more days, Rajkumar
Hirani’s P.K. requires
seven more days and
Policegiri needs 17 days
to be completed”
the friend.
A source said, “Actually, the enormity of
the court verdict didn’t sink in to Sanju sir on
Thursday. All day and night we surrounded
him and kept him busy. TP Aggarwal even fed
Sanju Sir biryani with his own hands. We kept
the atmosphere in his house very very light.”
“Guests kept dropping in. All his friends
were there. Ranbir Kapoor, Vidya Balan and
Farhan Akhtar came towards evening. We all
narrated anecdotes from Sanju sir’s wild days
to Ranbir since he wasn’t even born in Sanju
sir’s Rocky days.”
However, Sanjay Dutt’s wife Manyata was
extremely upset.
“She was inconsolable. She put up a brave
front, but she kept breaking down throughout
the day. It’s a shocker for the entire family.
Sanju sir hasn’t even begun to understand
what this means. We are all hoping for a mira-cle,” added the source.

F
ILMMAKER Sajid Khan seems to be all praise for
actress Sonakshi Sinha who will be seen doing a
peppy dance number Thank God It’s Friday in
his upcoming film Himmatwala. The director said he
would like to cast her in one of his future films as well.
“I nurtured a desire to work with Sonakshi after I
saw her in Dabangg. You will see Sonakshi in one of
my future films as well. I am very fond of that girl,”
Khan said in a group interview.
Sonakshi has been donning a desi look in her pre-vious films like Dabangg and Rowdy Rathore. Khan
wanted to break this image through his song.
“A lot has been said about her not being modern
and that she can only look nice in Indian clothes. I
wanted to break this image that she doesn’t look nice in
western outfits,” he said.
Talking about the outfits used in the song, Khan
said that he wanted clothes from that era.
“The Western outfits over here are retro. I said I
wanted outfits from that era,” he said.
Sonakshi has two looks in the song. The first one
has been inspired from Parveen Babi’s look in Shaan
and the second one is similar to Sridevi from Chaal-baaz.
Directed by Sajid Khan, Himmatwala stars Ajay
Devgn and Tamannaah and is all set to release on
March 29.
Vidya’s Ghanchakkar fashion
puts designer in dilemma
IANS
A
CTRESS Vidya Balan, who is playing a Punjabi housewife in her
next film Ghanchakkar, says her fashion sense in the romantic
comedy is bizarre, and that her designer had a tough time try-ing to put together the look.
“I had great fun playing Nitu Bhatia in Ghanchakkar. She’s the
hatti-katti (hefty) Punjabi housewife, who we all know, somehow! She
is the cats’ whiskers, when it comes to fashion,” Vidya said.
Describing the part further, she said: “She’s the sort of woman
who goes for a walk one day and feels if you’ve exercised, there’s no
harm eating one ‘samosa’. Subarna Rai Chaudhari went mad trying to
put together the look. What she wears is almost outlandish and even
bizarre sometimes... but that’s for you!”
Directed by Rajkumar Gupta, Ghanchakkar features Emraan
Hashmi opposite Vidya. The film is slated for release on June 28.

No side effects of Stardom for me,
says Hrithik Roshan
ACTOR Hrithik Roshan has
been in the film industry for
over a decade now and feels
there are no negative aspects
to being a star.
The 39-year-old started
his career with the 2000 hit
Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai and has
been part of many successful
Hrithik Roshan
projects. The actor feels that
everything is okay as long as an actor does not focus
too much on himself.
“There are no side effects of anything. If there is a
negative feedback then it is just a feedback. There is no
negative side-effect. We all have areas in our life which
are not perfect and we can choose to sit and complain
about that,” Hrithik said.
“I feel the best way to live is to not to have a cam-era facing you. It should be facing outwards and you
should be watching the world and you should be see-ing your reflection on other people. If they are smiling
at you and they are happy that means you are doing
good,” he added.
Hrithik feels blessed to have received all the love
from people around him and says it is his aim to spread
happiness and give back the affection.

The actor is thrilled.

Amitabh said in a state-ment. An extensive marketing campaign is being planned with
Big B for the recently launched cookies, which are the company’s
latest offering in the premium cookies category.
“It gives me an immense pleasure to be associated with the
most iconic biscuit company of India, Parle Products. For last 70
years, we all have grown up eating Parle’s biscuits and it has al-ways been the most loved brand in the country amongst all age
groups,” added the 70-year-old. Amitabh has been zeroed on in
as he is in sync with the brand’s positioning of class, rich quality,
and outstanding achievement, read the statement.
“He (Amitabh) embodies an exemplary blend of both style
and performance, making him the ideal choice to endorse our
products. The goodwill and reputation he has built over the last
three decades compliments our own,” said Shalin Desai, group
product manager, Parle Products.
Vivek wants to be in news for
professional reasons
VIVEK Oberoi says
media should be
cautious and report
more about an actor’s
films rather than his
personal life.
When asked what
kind of entertainment
Vivek Oberoi
news does he prefer to
watch as an actor, Vivek said, “News that is related to
our work and news that is not related to our person-al lives because I feel there is a line. The relationship
between media and actors is such that many times
the line is crossed, spoiling the friendship.”
The 36-year-old was speaking on Sunday at the
Miss India 2013 grand finale. He was promoting his
film Grand Masti at the event.
“So I think we (media and celebrities) are in-terdependent - we depend on each other. So we
should take care of it. I don’t like any personal news,
not just about myself but also about anyone else.
We like to have a certain amount of privacy,” added
the actor, who will be seen in Hrithik Roshan starrer
Krrish 3. Vivek was last seen in Zila Ghaziabad and is
currently judging children’s reality show India’s Best
Dramebaaz along with Sonali Bendre.

Nikhil Thampi,
Nishka Lulla and
Nupur Kanoi
presented fash-ionable yet wearable lines on the
second day of Lakme Fashion
Week (LFW) summer-resort
2013 on Saturday.
Popular anchor Shibani
Dandekar, who was there
to cheer the designers, was
especially appreciative of
the creations due to their
wearability.
“I love the fact that all
the clothes can translate
from the runway into real
life. They are all very weara-ble. Usually, Indian designers
make their clothes very blingy,
but here we saw three designers
who didn’t,” Shibani told the
media post the show.
Nikhil Thampi’s line was
“an ode” to noted American
painter, sculptor and illustra-tor Richard Artschwager.
“His ideology inspired me a lot. I
have tried to give him a tribute. I hope
I did a fabulous job and that everyone
enjoyed it,” he said.
The line included jackets, trousers,
long flowy tops and full-length gowns
in colours like yellow, black and white.
“I believe in comfort. You will see
long flowy silhouettes in most of my
collections,” he said.
Nishka Lulla’s collection reflected a
Bohemian feel.
“My line is a transition from the
last season. It follows the same story
of a Bohemian girl, who likes to travel.
I took inspiration from the dandelion
flower, and there was a lot of transpar-ent mix of fabric in the collection,” she
said.
The collection comprised long
dresses, shirts, long jackets as well as
shorts in soothing colours like blue,
beige and light pink, to beat the heat
this summer.
“I believe that style should be per-sonal and comfortable. It is a very flex-ible collection and you can wear (these
creations) in everyday life,” she said.
Nupur Kanoi used a lot of metal-lic embellishments for her line, titled
Ladies and Gentlemen.
“I used a lot of metallic to give a
chic look. You will see a lot of detailing
on the collars and sleeves. Metallic is
generally considered evening wear and
through this, I tried to put it into day
wear and make it more casual,” she
said.
The line had a lot of safari suits,
sight suits, kurtas, short and sleeveless
jackets, long skirts and dresses. Colours
like gold, bronze and copper dominated
the line.

Jeffrey Archer sells the
story of his life to Indians
Indians love
stories. You have a
great tradition
of story-telling with
writers like RK
Narayan. But the
young do have a
very short attention
span
— JEFFREY ARCHER
IANS
I
NDIA remains an inspiration for
acclaimed British novelist and
short story writer Jeffrey Archer
with its “manic pace, more than
50 million readers and warm
hospitality”.
The writer, in India to launch his new
book, Best Kept Secret, the third in the
Clifton Chronicles series, says India is
growing like any other emerging world
capital - high on consumerism and the
culture of brands.
“I came to India 30 years ago on a
political trip. Every year, I come to the
country, the pace of change looks tre-mendous. Even the young are changing.
They have become homogenous (like
the rest of the world), Archer said in an
interview.
“The whole world is becoming a
shopping centre - and this homogenisa-tion of culture is getting worse everyday.
You can’t turn the clock back,” Archer
said.
Explaining with an example, he said,
“Women stopped wearing kimonos
in Japan 30 years ago. They began to
wear western clothes. Now, the young
are wearing designer jeans. That is the
influence of television channels and
magazines. When I landed at the airport
in the capital, I looked at the shopping
arcade and it could have been any coun-try on earth,” mused the British novel-ist, one of a growing tribe of foreign
writers who have included India on
their book tour and launch maps.
Does Archer have a favourite city
in India? Given a choice, he would
rather not live in Mumbai, but in
Chennai and Bangalore - “two of
India’s most important cities,” he
says, adding, “but I find Mumbai
fascinating”.
Archer’s new autobiographical
fictional serial - The Clifton Chroni-cles - begins in 1940, the year Archer
was born, and spans the transforming
decades of the 1950s, 60s and thereafter
to end roughly around 2014, in
a series of seven books.
It looks at the
struggle of the
middle-ofthe-rung,
through
the lifestories
of the
Clift-on
and Barringtons - two families at the
opposite end of the social spectrum.
Best Kept Secret chronicles 20 years
of hero Harry Clifton’s life from 1940s to
1960s. Harry is now a best selling novel-ist and has built a new life with Emma
Barrington and their son Sebastian, but
threat looms on the horizon not only
from the Barrington family, but from a
shady figure from Harry’s past.
“The series is autobiographical in
nature. It is about the west country of
England where I had spent all my life.
I am Harry, my wife is Emma and my
mother is Macey. It is my life... What
I perceived as a young person writing
for the first time. The beginning was a
tough, hard battle. I captured the feel of
the era through the language my mother
used,” Archer said.
It stops short at the swinging 1960s:
“The next book will have the Beatles and
the Rolling Stones, when the writer was
in Oxford”, Archer says.
There were fads and phases in liter-ary movements, the novelist says.
“We went through erotica, we have
different phases. I had stuck to telling a
simple story - I did not do violence, but
gave good tales with beginning, mid-dle and end. If you give people a simple
story, they can become involved with it,”
Archer says.
Archer should know, being among
the best-selling novelists in the world,
having sold 250 million copies world-wide and published in 97 countries in 37
languages.
“I wonder if there is going to be a
day when people will stop reading. More
than 1,000 people came to my launch
in Bangalore, of which 60 percent were
women. Kids climbed up the racks to
hear me,” Archer said.
The tradition of story-telling will
survive in India, the writer says. “Indi-ans love stories. You have a great tradi-tion of story-telling with writers like RK
Narayan. But the young do have a very
short attention span,” he said.
Archer, known also for short story
anthologies like the Quiver Full of
Arrows and a Twist in the Tale, is in-spired by “incidents he comes across”.
And among his literary forebears
are HH Munro, O’Henry and F
Scott Fitzgerald: the writers from
whom he has drawn inspiration.
Archer is working on a new
volume of 12 short stories and
plotting a bigger enterprise than
Kane And Abel, his literary mile-stone.

NYT SYNDICATE
W
HEN does a monkey turn down a free treat? When it is offered by a self-ish person, apparently.
Given the choice between accepting goodies from helpful, neutral
or unhelpful people, capuchin monkeys (Cebus Apella) tend to avoid
individuals who refuse aid to others, according to a study published in
Nature Communications.
“Humans can build up an impression about somebody just based on what
we see,” says author James Anderson, a comparative psychologist at the
University of Stirling, in the UK The capuchin results suggest that this
skill “probably extends to other species,” he says.
Anderson chose to study capuchins because of their highly
social and cooperative instincts. Monkeys in the study
watched as a person either agreed or refused to help anoth-er person to open a jar containing a toy. Afterward, both
people offered a food pellet to the animal. The monkey
was allowed to accept food from only one.
When help was given, the capuchins showed little
preference between the person requesting help and the
one providing aid. But when help was denied, the seven
monkeys tended to accept food less often from the unhelpful
person than from the requester.
To try to understand the monkeys’ motivations, Anderson
and his team tested different scenarios. The animals showed no
bias against people who failed to help because they were busy
opening their own jar. But they tended to avoid people who
were available to help but did not do so.
“Explicit refusal to help is a signal that you’re dangerous,
that you’re negative,” says Kiley Hamlin, a developmental
psychologist at the University of British Columbia in Van-couver, Canada. Similar biases have been shown in chim-panzees and in three-month-old humans. Hamlin says
that the capuchin study suggests that being able to identify
undesirable social partners has ancient evolutionary roots.
Sarah Brosnan, an ethologist at Georgia State Univer-sity in Atlanta, says that this type of study is usually done
with great apes and “it’s really interesting to see this in a
monkey.” The findings suggest that social inference may
occur in animals that vary widely in brain size and cognitive
ability, she explains.
But Jennifer Vonk, a comparative psychologist at Oakland
University in Rochester, Michigan, and an author of the chim-panzee study, cautions against assuming that the monkeys
understand much about human character.
“You really don’t know what they’re inferring,” she says.
In conditions in which both people were given jars, the bi-ases against unhelpful people were weaker, she explains, so
stronger tests are needed to rule out possible preferences
of the monkeys for people who control objects of interest,
such as toys.
Still, Vonk says that she is interested in seeing wheth-er other social animals – dogs, for instance – and even
nonsocial species, such as bears, guide their behavior by
watching social interactions.

The Full Moon today is the only
Full Moon opposite your sign all
year. This is why relationships
with partners and close friends
are stressed. Patience.
Job-related matters and
relationships with co-workers
might be tense because of the
Full Moon energy today. Since
this is a very temporary thing,
why not cut others some slack?
Parents must be patient with
children today, and romantic
partners must be patient with each
other. Sports will be competitive
and cutthroat because of the
strong Full Moon energy.
You feel pulled between the
demands of home versus the
demands of career and your
external world. Despite the
importance of home and family,
you cannot ignore your job today.
This is a mildly accident-prone day
for you because of the Full Moon
energy. Be careful of distractions
and heightened emotional
reactions to others. Keep your
head down and your powder dry.
Avoid arguments about money
and possessions, because things
quickly could get out of hand
due to today’s Full Moon
energy. Wait a day or two to
discuss these matters.

Today the only Full Moon in your
sign all year is taking place, which
is why relations with others might
be a bit strained. Easy does it.
Something behind the scenes
makes you vaguely uneasy
today. Don’t worry; it’s just the
Full Moon energy. Guard against
knee-jerk reactions to others.
When dealing with groups,
especially children, be patient.
Sports accidents might occur
now because of the aggression
accompanying this Full
Moon day. (Lighten up.)
Be patient with family members
today, because everyone is
inclined to be over emotional.
Today is the Full Moon, and even
the family dog will react to it.
Pay attention to everything you
say and do today, distractions
and anger could create an
accident-prone situation.
Today’s Full Moon heightens
your responses to everything.
Be extra-careful with all your
financial dealings, including
shopping. Avoid rash responses
to others, even if you feel
emotional about something.
(It’s easy to go overboard.)

The Croods
THE Croods tells the story of the world’s first family road trip. When their cave is destroyed, the Crood family
must embark on a comedy adventure into strange and spectacular territory in search of a new home. As if
patriarch Grug (Cage) didn’t already have enough to handle, it goes from bad to worse when they encounter an
imaginative nomad named Guy (Reynolds.) With Guy’s help the Croods conquer their fear of the outside world
and discover that they have exactly what it takes to survive - each other.
