NYT SYNDICATE
HEN Seth MacFarlane calls to talk about his directorial
debut, Ted, he’s multitasking, of course. He’s just finished another day of work overseeing the three Fox animated comedies he produces Family Guy, The
Cleveland Show and American Dad – and is preparing
to attend a benefit.
“It’s a little crazy,” MacFarlane said. “But I can shower and get
dressed while we’re on the phone.”
Ted, from Universal due June 29 , stars Mark Wahlberg as a man
still living with the toy bear he wished to life when he was a boy.
MacFarlane, 38, not only directed the movie and wrote the screenplay (with Family Guy collaborators Alec Sulkin and Wellesley
Wild), but he also plays the title character: a living, talking, cursing,
pot-smoking teddy bear that he portrayed using motion-capture
technology.
In these excerpts from that interview, MacFarlane talks about the
making of Ted and the many responsibilities he juggles as a television
producer and first-time filmmaker.
W
Q. Compared with some of the things you’ve done on Family
Guy, the story of an obscene talking teddy bear could seem
almost conventional. Where did the idea for Ted come from?
A. It was an idea that I had for an animated series. And when I
decided it’s probably about time for me to make a movie, that seemed
like a cool idea. The Avatar/Lord of the Rings technology had reached
a point where you could create a fictional-looking character that was
completely real in movement. It’s been in adventure films, in fantasy
films. Where more than a comedy do you need subtle character
actors?
How much of your Family Guy sensibility – the pop-cultural
references, the Patrick Stewart voice-overs – did you want to
have in your film debut?
I tend to not overthink that stuff too much. You want to do something
that’s fresh, and at the same time, you don’t want to completely alienate
your audience by doing a Holocaust drama.
Ted, due on June 29, is Seth MacFarlane
directorial debut. In this interview he talks
about the making of Ted and the many
responsibilities he juggles as a television
producer and first-time filmmaker
In prime-time network television, you have many restrictions. How do you decide for yourself, in an R-rated movie,
when a joke has gone too far?
If nobody’s laughing, you know that you went too far. Oftentimes
you’ll hear an audible groan from an audience. Unless you think it’s the
greatest joke in the world and you’ll just absolutely kill yourself if it’s not
in the movie – if that joke just dies at seven or eight screenings, then it
just doesn’t work. You have to trust the audience, because that’s who
you’re making the movie for.
The campy 1980 film version of Flash Gordon gets referenced
a lot in Ted. Were you a fan of that movie growing up?
I actually wasn’t as a child. I had a lot of friends who were. But it’s a
film that’s so absurd and something that is the subject of sustained
debate over whether they knew what they were doing or whether it was
just a horrible accident. On any given day, how many times do you reference a piece of pop culture or a brand name? I bet it’s a lot more often
than we think. “I’ll make a Xerox of it.” Our daily lives are packed with
proper nouns of the corporate kind.
Do you feel the stakes are particularly high because this is
your directorial debut?
There is a lot of that. There’s two ways to look at it. One, it’s my first
movie, so there’s going to be a lot of eyes on it. Two, if it doesn’t do well,
eh, it’s just my first movie, I’ll get better. For me, it’s got to be received
well enough that it doesn’t seem insane to make another one. My first
movie can’t be Ishtar.
If it doesn’t do well, could people conclude, “He’s a TV guy,
but that sensibility just doesn’t translate to film?”
There are plenty of worse things to be known as than a TV guy.
Television has been great to me, and I’ve had a blast doing the shows.
You told The Hollywood Reporter, “Part of me thinks that
Family Guy should have already ended.” What did you mean
by this?
Whenever I see a popular show start to wane, I always wonder, do the
people working on it know that? Or are they thinking that what they’re
doing is full of greatness? And that’s all that was. I always said to myself
I would try to be objective enough to ask that question. None of us are
sick of it yet. It’s a question of whether the fans will ever get sick of it,
and I’m sure at some point they will.
Could you envision a scenario where Family Guy continues,
but you aren’t working on it day to day?
Yeah, that happened during the movie. I could see that at some point
down the line.
There was a lot of excitement when it was announced you
were preparing a TV revival of The Flintstones. What happened to that project?
It’s been postponed. When I suggested the idea, at the time I had a lot
more free spots on my schedule, and it sounded like something that
would be a good fit with the current prime-time animation landscape.
By the time the I’s were dotted and T’s crossed, I was just so busy that I
couldn’t accommodate it. I think at some point it could still happen.
Probably not within the next year or two years.
Emmy voters recently got a Family Guy mailing with a picture of Peter Griffin calling them “bloated, overprivileged
Brentwood Jews.” I assume this was your handiwork?
I don’t remember which one of the writers pitched it, but it cracked
me up because it’s clearly Peter saying the line, and it felt in keeping
with the irreverence of his character. The Emmys gets into a rut from
time to time, where the same shows will be nominated and awarded
over and over, and it becomes a little club. (That was) our subtle, dry,
witty way of commenting on that. I say that with enormous sarcasm.

Follieri happy for Hathaway
Spray tan makes Kim’s skin glow
ACTOR Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, Italian real estate developer Raffaello
Follieri, is happy that she has found love again with Adam Shulman. “I want
only the best for this person. She was very sweet to me. We had, I think, a
very nice relationship. I don’t have anything bad to say,” femalefirst.co.uk
quoted Follieri as saying. Follieri is currently in Italy - he was deported after
spending five years in prison in Pennsylvania. He was reportedly arrested
under the charges of fraud in the Charitable Follieri Foundation.
SOCIALITE Kim Kardashian reveals that she gets spray tan done in
every 10 days in order to maintain the glow on her face. “I have a spray
tan every 10 days - I know I do it a lot but I love it. I have a guy called
Jimmy Coco come to my house in LA and spray me. I don’t know what
he uses, but he’s a great tanner,” Kardashian told Now magazine. The
31-year-old also admits that she relies on fake tan when she suffers
from the painful skin condition of psoriasis, reports contactmusic.com.

Microwave oven-Maid launched
‘MAID’, an incredible cooking device launched here on Monday, can auto-cook virtually unlimited number of dishes besides making
microwave operations simpler with user-friendly interface. Make All Incredible Dishes or Microwave Android Integrated Device (Maid)
which will cost less than Rs.7,000 is the new cooking device developed by seven friends at the newly incubated company at
Technopark-Technology Business Incubator (TBI), in the Technopark campus here. “This is the latest generation of microwave ovens
and it literally knows to cook every dish. Connecting to the internet at home, one can select the dish of choice from the website and
download the recipe and ingredients’ list using Maid,” said, SectorQube Technolabs CEO, Sabarish Prakash who floated the company
six months back. All households who have microwaves at home can also upgrade them by just installing the Maid console in their
appliances. The main features of Maid is that it can auto-cook virtually unlimited number of dishes besides making microwave operations simpler with user-friendly interface. Video recipes can be downloaded and the device also gives voice assistance throughout the
cooking process. The product is expected to be launched by end of year. Recipes can be downloaded at www.maid.sectorQube.com.
Prakash said ‘Maid’ is going to be a very unique product in the market.

TV remote frustrating
yet essential device
WILLIAM GRIMES
NYT SYNDICATE
T started out in the 1950s as an
effort-saving gadget, like the electric can opener or electronic car
keys. It evolved into a necessity, a
cultural magic wand that has
transformed the relationship of viewers to
their televisions, and the style and content of the programs on view.
Today, US television viewers click away
at some 335 million TV remotes – nearly
three per household. No longer a curiosity, the remote is as much a part of the US
home as the personal computer or the
cellphone.
Novelist Saul Bellow denounced it as a
malign invention whose invitation to
jump from channel to channel, scrambling stories, “makes mental mincemeat
of us.” Ellen Goodman called it “the most
reactionary implement currently used to
undermine equality in modern marriage”
in a 1992 column for The Boston Globe,
noting its resemblance to a royal scepter
and the tendency of men to dictate its use.
“It really changed, in a fundamental
way, our interaction with technology and
with each other,” said Edward Tenner, a
historian of technology and culture and
the author of Our Own Devices. “Think of
the clickers that allow us to communicate
with all sorts of electronic devices. The TV
remote was the origin of that idea.”
No one foresaw the transformative
power of the device when Zenith unveiled
the first cordless remote, the Flash-Matic,
in 1955. Created by Eugene J Polley, who
died May 20 at 96, it looked like a small
ray gun. By directing a beam of light at
four photocells, one at each corner of the
screen, the viewer could change channels
up or down and increase or decrease the
volume.
The company’s advertisements proclaimed the Flash-Matic “a marvel of the
electronic age that gives you remote control without wires, cables or cords.”
Unlike the Lazy Bones, Zenith’s first
remote, introduced in 1950, it did not
have a wire connecting it to the television.
But it did have other drawbacks. The
photocells could be activated randomly by
bright sunlight during the day and by the
lights of passing cars at night.
Nevertheless, Polley regarded his
device with satisfaction.
“It makes me think my life was not
wasted,” he told The Baltimore Sun in
2000. “Maybe I did something for
humanity, like the guy who invented the
flush toilet.”
Robert Adler, the inventor of the Lazy
Bones, carried remote technology forward with an ultrasound device called the
Space Command. Viewers could press
one of four buttons on a box to turn the
television on and off, change channels
and adjust the volume. Each key, with a
sharp click, struck an aluminum rod that
sent ultrasound waves to the receiver in
the set.
The Space Command was introduced in
1956 and lived on into the age of transistor technology in the early 1960s. With
the arrival of infrared technology in the
early 1980s, it became obsolete, but by
that time the remote had already made
deep inroads into US life.
In 1965, the first year that statistics
were kept on sales of televisions with
remote controls, only 1 in 20 sets came
with a remote control. By 1985, half of all
colour sets came with a remote control,
and by 1988, three-quarters.
For the big networks, the remote, the
VCR and multiple cable channels formed
an axis of evil. The ray-gun design of the
Flash-Matic, it turned out, was a kind of
omen. Programming executives now
faced a world in which “the audience was
armed,” as James Gleick put it in “Faster:
The Acceleration of Just About
Everything.”
Television began to change, rapidly and
I

possible, doing any one

profoundly, as power shifted from corporate offices to increasingly fickle viewers.
After a research team at NBC discovered
that 25 percent of its audience changed
channels when credits rolled, the network
introduced the format known as “squeeze
and tease” in 1999. Credits were consigned to a third of the screen, running
simultaneously with promotional spots
intended to keep the viewers hooked.
The networks either abandoned or
modified strategies they had relied on for
decades. Increasingly, television shows
were “top-loaded.” That is, flashy production values were given prominence at the
beginning of shows, to entice restless
eyes, and commercials were moved to the
middle. The transition from one show to
the next became almost seamless, with
viewers thrust into new narratives
almost before they
knew the old
one
had
ended. The
visual style of
television
became much
faster and jumpier to stave off
visual ennui.
Viewers, for their
part, enjoyed a
somewhat conflicted
relationship with the
handy little device,
which often seemed to
have a mind of its own.
It showed an uncanny
talent for concealing
itself in the deepest
recesses of a sofa or wandering off to points
unknown. A thriving business in electronic televisionremote finders grew up
overnight.
As the remotes proliferated,
so did the number of function
keys. The devices that came with
cable boxes, bristling with buttons, looked like personal massagers intended to break up cellulite.
The Tito who imposed unity on
this Balkanized world was the universal remote, a superwand that could
be programmed to control dozens of
devices. But many consumers found
that it simply added a new layer of complexity to their lives and in some cases
sent them running to professional consultants for an intervention.
“The problem is, there are a billion buttons and you have no idea what they do,”
said Jeff Gernbacher, who supervises
Geek Squad technicians for Best Buy in
Minneapolis. “It puts people off the technology and makes them not want to use
it.”
The visual appearance of the typical
remote did not help matters.
“The television remote is the iconic
example of bad design,” said Bill
Moggridge, the director of the
Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National
Design Museum and the author of
Designing Interactions. “There was a
great deal of original design thinking in
the first modes. Flash-Matic, with its raygun look and red trigger, was very innovative, but modern remotes suffer from the
Swiss Army knife problem. When there
are as many features as possible, doing
any one thing becomes very difficult and
confusing.”
A new generation of universal remotes, like
the
Logitech
Harmony
series,
tries to simplify matters by doing the programming automatically once users log
on to a computer and, referring to an
extensive menu, select the model names
of the electronic devices they own.
The remote control may have liberated
viewers. But it has also produced anxiety,
stress and even violent conflict. In April
2011, a woman in Wellington, Florida,
attacked her husband with a remote,
which the police characterised as a
“deadly weapon.” And Exulam
Holman, of Joliet, Illinois,
was
charged
in
January with gouging
out his uncle’s eyes
and throwing him
down a flight of stairs
after a dispute over the
remote.
But simmering resentment is more the norm. Social scientists
became intrigued by the sexual politics of
the remote as the device became ubiquitous in the late 1980s. Men and women,
it seemed, used it differently. Men were
obsessive clickers, flipping through
channels out of boredom, restlessness,
the sense that something better might
be on elsewhere or because they wanted
to watch two programs at once. Women
tuned into a specific program, which they
then watched.
Alexis J Walker, who studies the sociology of the US family at Oregon State
University, examined remote-control use
among 36 couples in 1996 and finished up
by interviewing her subjects.
“I would say that the only thing that’s
frustrating for me is when we first turn on
the TV and he just flips through the channels,” one woman said. “It drives me crazy
because you can’t tell what’s on, because
he just goes through and goes through
and goes through.”
But the day of liberation may be at
hand. Industry experts agree that the allpowerful remote, and the complex pas de
deux between thumb and button, faces
obsolescence. David Mercer, a television
analyst at Strategy Analytics, a research
and consulting firm, has called the remote
“the dinosaur of the consumer electronics
industry.”
Voice-recognition and motion sensors
are already being incorporated into new
remotes like the Samsung Magic Touch,
the LG Magic Motion and the Ident
Gesture Remote. And for as little as $50,
viewers can buy a small device that plugs
into a smartphone and turns it into a
remote control.
“At the moment, the candy-bar remote
is still popular, but over the next few years
you’ll see mobile devices replacing it,”
said Dave Pedigo, the senior director of
technology for the Custom Electronic
Design and Installation Association,
whose members install home theatres.
And “in a decade, people will look at them
as quaint. My daughter’s child will say,
‘What’s a remote control?”’
Zenith’s Flash-Matic, the original wireless TV remote invented by Eugene
Polley, looked like an intergalactic
weapon, and no wonder. It was born at
the same time as the Flash Gordon TV
series, which ran from 1954 to 1955.
Flash-Matic took its cues from more
down-to-earth influences as well. Rama
Chorpash, director of product design at
Parsons, the New School for Design, said
that in the ‘50s there was “a whole typology” of devices that looked like guns. The
1954 radar speed gun is another example.
“It’s all about control,”
Chorpash said.
Eventually, of course, FlashMatic gave way to the elongated
rectangle familiar to decades of
TV viewers. But the marksman’s
action of pointing a beam at a hapless object didn’t change. At least, not
until recently.
Today, remotes are packaged in a
number of novelty shapes and operate
through a variety of gestures. You can
wave a stick like a wizard, cradle a soccer
ball whose hexagons are studded with
wireless commands, or merely think deep
thoughts and your TV screen will
respond.
The Magic Wand, for instance, is a
tapered plastic rod with a quilted pattern
on the handle and a motion sensor that
can be trained to manipulate most
remote-controllable devices. Users
change TV channels or increase volume
with a twist of the wrist or a fencer’s
thrust.
But the wand is mere Hobbit’s play
compared with the Haier Brain Wave TV.
As demonstrated at the Consumer
Electronics Show in January, viewers slip
on a headset developed by the company
NeuroSky, specialists in “brain-computer
interface technologies,” and work to
translate bursts of cerebral electricity into
operating commands.
It was no surprise to Chorpash that
couch potatoes, long befuddled by the science of broadcasting (not to mention by
the traditional plastic brick that controls
it) are literally throwing up their hands
and rolling their eyes.

Preity finds her junior version
Hate myself on screen: Shekhar Kapur
ACTRESS Preity Zinta has finally found her junior version - a
young girl with a dimpled right cheek to play her younger
version in her debut production Ishqk In Paris. “Thank you
to all of you who sent kiddie photos for the role of mini me
(my childhood) in Ishkq In Paris! The role has been cast
finally,” tweeted Preity. The 37-year-old took to Twitter last
month to scout for a “four to seven-year-old girl who has
one dimple on her right cheek and can play a younger me
for my film.” She has been successful in her efforts. Ishkq
In Paris, directed by Prem Soni, also features Arjun Rampal.
HE is an internationally acclaimed filmmaker and has presented
some of the actors in their best avatar in films, but Shekhar Kapur
detests watching himself on screen. “People keep telling me how
wonderful the film Drishti was. I actually never saw the final film.
Hated myself on screen. Still do,” the filmmaker posted on Twitter.
As an actor, he has featured in movies like Ishq Ishq Ishq (1974),
Jaan Hazir Hai (1975) and Gawahi (1989). He is also doing a
special appearance in Vishwaroopam, a Tamil-Hindi spy thriller
written, directed and co-produced by Kamal Haasan. Audiences
loved him when he featured in Kavita Choudhary directed hit serial
Udaan in 1989.

Bollywood has no
dancing style of its
own: Madhuri Dixit
Mona
Singh
RADHIKA BHIRANI
IANS
HE Hindi film industry is
devoid of a distinctive style
of dance, says dancing
queen Madhuri Dixit, who
feels
Bollywood
has
become a melting pot of all forms of
the art.
“I think Bollywood is an amalgam
of all dance styles. Bollywood has no
style of its own. The style is a cliche.
There are so many dance styles all
over the world and we get to see them
all in one song itself. So this is
Bollywood’s specialty,” Madhuri said.
“As soon as new styles come in, like
hip-hop is becoming popular now, you
see dancers amalgamating it into our
own dancing. The dance forms get a
Bollywood twist and it becomes a new
style. So Bollywood is always incorporating not just Indian and folk, but
western dances too,” she added.
Madhuri, who feels it is an “exciting” time for Bollywood, is credited
with dance hits like Humko aaj kal
hai, Dhak dhak, Ek do teen, Que sera
sera, Kaahe chhed mohe and Aaja
nachle. In each of these numbers, she
has showcased the variety she is capable of.
The diva took a break from showbiz
when she married US-based surgeon
Sriram Nene and shifted to Denver
from Mumbai to start a family. Now
she is back in tinsel town for good,
and judges celebrity participants on
dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla
Jaa 5.
She looks as fit as ever, and her skin
glows even more. What’s the secret?
“It’s just the discipline. You have to
be disciplined. I dance regularly and
exercise. One has to be fit. One thing
good is that I have no bad habits! So
for me it’s a healthy lifestyle all the
way,” she said.
On the small screen, she was last
seen on the judge’s seat in Jhalak
Dikhhla Jaa 4, and she admits “TV is
an immediate way to get in touch with
your fans.”
“Thousands of households have a
TV and it is great that I can be in so
many houses at a time. It’s so wonderful,” she added.
The 45-year-old is also ready for her
new innings in Bollywood with two
T
I want to inspire
women, says
Mona Singh
IANS
CTOR Mona Singh won hearts as an ugly, yet confident duckling in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, and now
as a strong woman who battles her husband’s
infidelity in Kya Huaa Tera Vaada, she wants to
inspire women across the country.
“As an actor, I am here to inspire women in whatever
way I can,” Mona said.
“There are many women who aren’t treated well, whose
husbands have extra-marital affairs and yet there are
women who accept them back. But here I want to tell them
to stand up for themselves and not be dependent on their
husband for every decision and for money,” she added.
In the show, the actress plays Mona, a happily married
woman with three kids. Their family life is perfect until her
husband goes back to his college sweetheart.
The current track of the Sony show features Mona who
steps out of her life as a homemaker to make a mark for
herself and be financially independent for the sake of her
kids.
“A woman has to be independent, she has to be working.
She has to go out and meet new people,” says the 31-yearold.
While Mona’s husband is essayed by actor Pawan
Shankar, actress Mouli Ganguly plays his love interest.
The show’s track has been compared with that of David
Dhawan’s 1999 hit film Biwi No 1. But Mona says it isn’t
completely so.
“To a certain extent I agree, because the man did have an
extra-marital affair and there was infidelity, but that was a
three-hour movie. However, this is a serial and it will last
for one year or two years at least, so it cannot be based on
a movie,” Mona said.
In the time that Mona was away from small screen’s fictional content, she was seen on the big screen in films like
3 Idiots and Utt Patangg. Her association with TV was
only limited with reality shows Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4,
Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega 4 and Shaadi 3
Crore Ki.
Just when everybody thought she had shifted to the big
screen, she came back to TV.
To this, Mona says movies are just a bonus and her heart
lies with the idiot box.
“I was never going to quit television. You’ll never read a
single interview of mine where I have said that ‘Okay, this
is it! I have done enough, of television and now I am quitting.’ Quitting was never my idea,” Mona said.
“I started from television, I belong here and I will continue to do this. Movies will happen whenever they are supposed to happen. Movies will be bonus for me, television is
my everyday bread, butter and jam and everything,” she
added.

films - Anubhav Sinha’s Gulab Gang
and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Dedh Ishqiya,
and she is upbeat about both projects.
“It’s definitely an exciting time.
Bollywood has taken a leap. The audience has matured, they are ready to
see different kinds of subjects and
topics and different kinds of films are
being made. People who have
stepped in are extremely professional and so everything is done
professionally,” said Madhuri,
last seen on the big screen in
2007 movie Aaja Nachle.
She clarifies Gulab Gang is
“nothing about gangsters,”
adding: “It’s about a group of
women who help other
women and help solve problems that nobody else can
solve. That’s what fascinated
me about the film... because it
is all about woman power.”
For Dedh Ishqiya, a sequel
to 2010 hit Ishqiya, Madhuri
said: “It can’t really be
called a woman-centric
movie as there are four
important characters in the
movie, I’m looking forward
to working with Arshad Warsi
and Naseeruddin Shah. I’ll be working with him in a meaningful role
after a long time.”
In the meantime, she says her family, including her husband and kids,
Arin and Raayan, has settled well in
Mumbai.
“For me, it wasn’t difficult. I’ve
grown up here. For my husband
and my kids it was tough. But they
have adjusted very well. They love
the food. My husband loves the
dhaba food,” she added.
Karan Johar over-shoots SOTY,
gets feeling of making a sequel
IANS
ILMMAKER Karan Johar
says he has shot a lot of extra

much so that he feels like he is
simultaneously making a sequel to
the movie.
“We have some days of shooting
still left. I think I am making a
sequel along with the film. I think
its a never-ending saga... though
its a fun-frolic, happy film. But I
may have overshot it a tad,” Johar
said.
The film serves as a launch pad

David Dhawan’s son Varun.
In the past week, Johar has been
busy shooting the publicity campaign for the comedy and deciding
upon its posters. But he loves the
vibes he gets on the set with the
young blood.
“I feel I am in a new phase of
production which is great for
Dharma Productions. We are
doing great collaborations and I
am directing fantastic newcomers
in the film. So I am charged about
it.
“I feel I’m blessed. I'm in a profession that lets me sing, dance,
laugh and cry and still be at work. I
don't think I could be more fortunate than this,” he added.
Meanwhile, he is also busy judging dance reality show Jhalak
Dikhhla Jaa 5 - his first venture on
TV post his hit, glossy, celebrity
chat show Koffee With Karan.
How does he manage the time.
“I’m in the middle of too many
things. Jhalak... shoot happens
one day a week. And fortunately I
am doing a film with newcomers,
so I can shuttle their dates around.
So I can do Jhalak..., because I
have the leverage to do that. It's
great fun,” said the 40-year-old.
The film is being co-produced by

Keira Knightley to star in comic film
Bieber wants to perfect English accent
BRITISH actress Keira Knightley will soon be seen tickling audience’s funny bones with her comic act in Seeking A Friend for the
End of the World. The story of the film revolves around the news
that earth will be destroyed in 21 days by an asteroid. Directed by
Lorene Scafaria, the film also stars Steve Carell. After Seeking A
Friend for the End of the World Knightley will return to her dramatic roles with Anna Karenina, an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s
novel by the same name, reports contactmusic.com. Knightley,
who has been recently engaged to musician James Righton, was
last seen in 2011 historical film - A Dangerous Method.
AMERICAN singer Justin Bieber wants lessons to perfect his
British accent, after being praised for imitating a Brit well in a
recent interview. “I adore the accent, it’s awesome. I am thinking about having lessons to help me speak like you guys. I
would love to be a real English gentleman,” Bieber told dailystar.co.uk. The 18-year-old said “By this time next year I
would like to win a Grammy, maybe that will happen and I
would like to do some movies, stuff like that. I actually want to
do some comedy movies, as well as some action, some stuff
that is going to be challenging.”

Russell Brand back to
stand-up with Brand X
“I love doing
stand-up because
you have a direct
interaction with
the audience.
There is no
mediation, no
script, no
direction. It is
my great love”
E’S played an out-of-control rocker in Hollywood movie Get Him to
the Greek and a drunken playboy
in Arthur, but in his first US television show, Americans will see
raucous British comedian Russell Brand as
they haven’t before - doing stand-up.
Brand returns to his roots in new show
Brand X, a late-night, once-a-week programme
debuting on the FX network. It shows off the
comedian’s charged humour, as well as his
more serious take on spirituality, consumerism
and celebrity culture in front of a live audience.
“I love doing stand-up because you have a
direct interaction with the audience. There is
no mediation, no script, no direction. It is my
great love. What is it other than telling the truth
to human beings that are identical to me?”
Brand said.
Inspired by topical events and filmed in a
small, nightclub-like studio north of Los
Angeles four days ahead of broadcast, Brand X
finds the ex-husband of pop singer Katy Perry
in reflective and provocative form.
No target is off limits for the 37-year-old,
whose discourse in the first episode begins
with an account of his recent meeting with the
Dalai Lama.
Audience participation and off-the-cuff
mockery also play a part in the show that the
FX basic cable network says brings “an unmistakably irreverent attitude” to its late-night programming.
H
“The main thing I am interested in is the
difference in the way information is portrayed and the truth behind that information,” Brand said of his themes.
Brand made his name in his native
England around 10 years ago, starting in
comedy clubs and moving to radio, TV
and award shows. Using his own history,
he courted controversy (and lost several
jobs) through his jokes and pranks.
The British comedian says FX has
placed no restrictions on his act.
Although the TV show contains some
language bleeps and edits“I love doing
stand-up because you have a direct
interaction with the audience. There is
no mediation, no script, no direction. It
is my great love. , one-liners about
Oprah Winfrey.
“I would never like to hurt a person’s
feelings. But other than that, no, nothing is off limits,” said Brand.
He said Americans probably think of
him as “that bloke out of those films
(who) seems to be presented through
the mainstream media as relatively
edgy within the safe confines of the
homogenised entertainment industry.”
As for what US audiences will think after
watching Brand X?
“I imagine they will say, he is quite warm
and sweet. But chaotic,” he said.
FX, which is owned by News Corp’s Fox
Entertainment Group, has ordered six initial
episodes of Brand X.

Gerald still has his eyes on Sarah
Piolo admits to have received feelers from TV5
CONTRARY to rumours that he has grown cold toward Sarah
Geronimo, Gerald Anderson maintained that he is still courting and getting to know the Popstar Princess. “I didn’t stop,”
he said in a report. In spite of their hectic schedules, the
young actor said he and Sarah communicate on daily basis.
Speculations that the two have ended their special friendship
cropped up after it was alleged that Gerald has been seen
dating someone else. Sarah and Gerald’s separate arrivals at
the premiere night of the film Born To Love You last month
also raised questions about of their relationship.
PIOLO Pascual has has said he was in talks with TV5 about a possible
transfer. The actor made the disclosure in an interview with YES!
Magazine. He said that he informed Star Magic executives Johnny
Manahan and Mariole Alberto about it. He chose to stay with the
Kapamilya network because he felt that it allows him more protection,
career-wise. Last year, rumours swirled that Pascual was planning to jump
ship to another network, presumably TV5. The actor repeatedly denied the
reports, insisting that he is happy with ABS-CBN. The rumours re-emerged
when actress KC Concepcion, another prized talent of ABS-CBN, made
public their split late last year.

Dantes is Rivera’s boyfriend.
It was on, Valentine’s Day last
year, that Younghusband first
expressed intention to pursue
Locsin — and this he did quite publicly, asking the actress for a date via
Twitter. The seemingly brash
approach, which created much buzz
at the time, worked somehow, with
the two eventually meeting a couple
of times.
None too soon, they became constant companions, travelling together to such faraway places as Hong
Kong and Paris.
Early this year, both were still
reluctant to confirm the actual status of their relationship. “No labels,
we’re happy,” said Locsin earlier.
“No status. Why change something when it’s not broken?
Everything’s going well. There’s no
need to change anything,”
Younghusband agreed.
Michelle done with posing for men’s magazines covers

stages of her showbiz
career.
“My first was Maxim,
then FHM, both when I
was 17 years old . And
then with my sister

and I think that would be the
last for a sexy cover,” she said.
She has her sights set on becoming a “sexy cover model” of a different magazine - Women’s Health
and Total Fitness.
“I’m really aiming for Women’s
Health, that’s what I really want,
that is why I need to stop posing

Michelle.
Michelle’s interest in a fitness
magazine sprung from her new
“addiction” – working out.
She revealed that she’s following
exercise regimens for her health
religiously. Her last FHM showed
not only a slimmer Michelle, but a
well-toned one.
“I feel like the people they get
are deserving. I feel I deserve it
because I eat healthy food, I workout three to four times a week even
I have work. I do Cross Fit which is
an intense work-out,” she
described.
Michelle attributes her fit
lifestyle these days to her beau of
seven months - a soccer player
from Guam. She met him in her
Cross Fit class in Libis, Quezon
City, where he was a Cross Fit
coach.
“He got me into it. When I started, I was so weak. But I got used
to, now I can say I am stronger, I
can lift weights,” she said with
pride.
Ironically, Michelle didn’t
develop a passion for fitness when
she was still with John Hall, a
buff model turned showbiz personality. She recalled that though
John would tell her to go to the
gym and work out, she would
have lots of reasons not to, like
she felt lazy or she just didn’t like
to do it. But now, thanks to her
boyfriend, Michelle has loves
doing workouts.
Aside from fitness, Michelle is
focused on her acting career which
she feels has progressed since she
started in showbiz six years ago.
The former Kapamilya talent is
grateful to GMA-7 for the opportunities coming her way. Her roles
have become more challenging .
Michelle wants to show her
range of acting in her latest soap,
Faithfully, where she stars with
Maxene Magalona, Isabel Oli,
Vaness del Moran and Isabelle
Daza. Michelle thanks everyone
who finds her “sexy” or likes her
but she’d rather be called a “good
