Page 36 Zumba is a Latin dance -inspired fitness programme created by dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez in Colombia during the 1990s. English (Drama) English (Thriller) English (Romance) English (Mystery) Arabic English (Action) English (Drama) Tamil (Action) Hindi (Action) Zumba’s corporate slogan is “Ditch the workout, join the party.” At the Z-fest, no one is going to count out the song’s beat for you, or demonstrate the choreography before the song starts: You’re here to party, my friend, not to take a graduate seminar at the Dance Notation Bureau HENRY ALFORD NYT SYNDICATE HENEVER I read about people who are in thrall to a dance craze, my world suddenly seems too small. Oh, to dance the mazurka until my footmen are forced to carry me home on a makeshift gurney at dawn; oh, to spurn a dinner invitation to Scott and Zelda’s because I literally cannot stop doing the Charleston. More recent offerings like the achy-breaky and the lambada held no appeal for me: One brought to mind the phrase “ratty mullet”; the other, “pelvic wallop.” For all I know, Macarena is Portuguese for “a large room in which women apply makeup.” But I recently started doing Zumba, the dance and fitness phenomenon that, in 125 countries, has been whipping some 12 million people into a lather for the last decade, including everyone from Wyclef Jean to the writer Susan Orlean. I can safely say that dance-wise it’s the closest I have ever come to losing my mind. To wit: When I went to an elegant stand-up cocktail party in the San Remo building some weeks ago, I was moved to enact for a fellow swiller of white wine a bit of Zumba choreography that I think of as the Disco Pony. Forming a fist with my right hand and then raising it over my head, I rotated it while standing on my left foot and rapidly pivoting 360 degrees. My Zumba origins are humble. I was initially drawn to the Z, as I like to call it, because I wanted to be more limber and nimble. Yes, I was impressed that this combination of Latin dance and cardio workout can cause you to lose 500 to 1,000 calories per sweat-soaked, hour-long session. But my stronger motivator was a desire to remedy my somewhat Frankensteinian corporeal stolidity. There are parts of my body that have not moved since 1965. I started, as many do, on the Zumba.com website. I learned there how, one day in the mid1990s, the Colombian fitness instructor Alberto Perez, called Beto, forgot to take his aerobics music to a class he was teaching. Using instead some salsa and merengue tapes he had in his backpack, Perez started improvising what would eventually become Zumba. Typing my ZIP code into the website, I was told that 648 classes were within eight kilometres. As the Hollywood adage runs, you could die from the encouragement. I have now consorted with the Z for two months. Most of my frantic gyrating and quick quick-stepping has taken place at New York University and at three YMCAs in Manhattan. Though there are specialty classes like Aqua Zumba and Zumba Gold, the great majority of Zumba classes are open to people of all levels, and follow this format: An instructor arrives wearing stretchy black clothing and a facial expression Sunday, February 5, 2012 Dance yourself to fitness, the y b a a m w u Z W Heidi Range (right) and Beto Perez at the launch of the Zumba Tour. of militant excitement; she turns on some music (lots of Ricky Martin and salsa, with a smattering of the Latin-Caribbean hybrid known as reggaeton) and wordlessly starts dancing. We 15 or 20 (primarily female) students, all in workout clothes, erupt in a Busby Berkeley-ish cavalcade of flailing choreo-mimicry. Zumba’s corporate slogan is “Ditch the workout, join the party.” At the Z-fest, no one is going to count out the song’s beat for you, or demonstrate the choreography before the song starts: You’re here to party, my friend, not to take a graduate seminar at the Dance Notation Bureau. Indeed, one of my Chinatown Y instructors told a group of us, three of whom looked to be closing in on 70: “You need to relax your face. You don’t go to a nightclub and look all tense. Imagine there’s a great-looking guy or girl at the club.” This is the most physically exhausting party you will ever attend. You may be encouraged to, say, kick your legs as high as your shoulder or to propel yourself across the floor. Your body will ache. You’ll bend parts of your body previously unbent. You’ll get caught up in the excitement and you’ll overdo, overextend. During the slow songs, you’ll configure your face in a manner that is at once tragic and urgent: You’ve been shot in the stomach but are late for an appointment. I operate at 50 or 60 percent mastery of the choreography, which is about average. Certain stuttering Latin beats, and the fancy footwork they foster, elude me. But my Achilles’ heel is my overly literal approach: Any time an instructor telegraphs a coming move midsong by, for instance, pointing to the right or holding up three fingers to denote repetition, I am sure to make these prescriptive actions the very centrepiece of my dancing. I’m the language student who greets passersby with, “Lesson 1: Good morning!” My favourite instructor so far is Yvonne Puckett. When I read on the Zumba website that this 73-yearold showbiz veteran had danced with Fred Astaire and with Marge and Gower Champion and had been in two Elvis Presley movies, I hied myself to Chelsea Piers to take her class. In the soaring, bustling hangar that is the Chelsea Piers Sports Centre, I pegged Puckett at first sight: a warm pixieish Carol Burnett type in boysenberry cargo pants and black-sequinned sneakers. I gushily introduced myself, and asked, “Do you think Fred Astaire would have embraced Zumba?” She said, “Oh, definitely, as all dancers would.” I told her, “I’m trying to get some of the Astaire buoyancy and lightness into my Zumba work.” She smiled at me indulgently, as if I had told her that there were tiny people living inside my mailbox. Unlike some of my other instructors, who use war and combat metaphors to fire up a class, Puckett proved to be all unicorns and rainbows; she trilled, “Bee-you-tea-full” to us no less than five times during the hour. I wafted home on a cloud of lavender Tofutti. I’ve hurt myself only once. Hoping to up my game, I took a class one Sunday morning at Alvin Ailey, where I had heard the crowd was younger, the choreography fiercer. At the registration desk, thinking of the Ailey company’s spectacularly athletic production, “Revelations,” I asked the bubbly 20-something registrar, “Is this going to be ‘Revelations’ Zumba?” she said, “No.” I thanked her and then God. Fifteen minutes later, my instructor, Ben Byrd, a puckish redhead in his 20s wearing a navy do-rag, was complimenting my speed walking in place during one song, which led me to think, I’m in. But some five minutes later, my cloddishness about touching the floor with my hands while crouched in a frog stance caused him to yell at me, “Get lower!” I did, whereupon he smiled, a sign of encouragement. The dancing ramped up in fiery intensity, which was thrilling. I overexerted, I overdid. At hour’s end, Ben led us through 15 additional minutes: jumping jacks, push-ups, and situps, of which I completed one-fifth. The next day my body was a lake of fire. I swore off the Z for almost a week. When, post-Ailey, I returned to the relative oasis of the Chinatown Y, it was with some of the hauteur of the Broadway veteran who has been asked to perform Chekhov monologues at a Cracker Barrel. Suddenly I was Juilliard. “You should stand at the back of the class if you’re going to embellish the choreography,” I told one hot dog who was doing something unnecessarily tendril-like and octopoid with her fingers; when I started to slide in a puddle in the locker room, I thought, “Where is this facility’s toe chalk?” But subsequently, my ego has cooled and I have returned to a modest attempt to improve my 50 to 60 percent mastery. Am I, in the end, more limber, more nimble? I would say, to be determined. Part of me thinks that an effort to be lighter on my feet may, given that I’m gay, be an impossibility. I have noticed, however, that when I bend at the waist, I can touch my toes now, an improvement of a centimetre or so. I’ve also noticed that the Zumba workouts exhaust and debilitate me much less, and sometimes even energise me. And then there’s this: Two or three mornings a week, when I awake, my head is occupied by faint Latin music, and I envision the footwork I should be doing. If that’s not crazed, I don’t know what is. 30 Sunday, February 5, 2012 PLAYHOUSE www.qatar-tribune.com Beetle Bailey Blondie YESTERDAY’S ANSWER Popeye Spiderman LEARN ARABIC Jathri Radical Yared Display Yastajeeb Respond Zits Khaybitamal Disappointment Ihbat Frustration Hgadab Anger Dennis the Menace The Lockhorns Phone: 44666810 FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS CONTACT US AT: Fax: 44654975 Post Box No: 23493 Email: admin@qatar-tribune.com S TA R TA L K ARIES [mar 21 – apr 19] You're full of ideas about how to improve something at home or perhaps within your family dynamic. FOOD Sunday, February 5, 2012 www.qatar-tribune.com A quick cookie recipe: hazelnut olive oil and a dash of lemon FAITH DURAND GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICES T’S always nice to have an ultra-quick, ultraeasy cookie recipe on hand to offer lastminute guests. Here’s my latest favourite: A shortbread that consists of hazelnuts, olive oil and a touch of lemon — and very little else. You can mix these cookies up in less than 5 minutes, and they bake off in a flash. They taste delicious, too: sweet, nutty, savoury from the oil, and salty on the finish. I really like baking with olive oil; the flavour can add something special to baked goods where you might not expect it. I even made an olive oil cake for my wedding! But I had never tried a shortbread with olive oil, and given that butter is such an important element of traditional shortbread, I was unsure whether it would work. Lucky for me, these cookies turned out amazingly well. They aren’t much to look at — crumbly and brown — but they have warm, nutty flavour, and a deliciously crisp, sturdy and toasty texture. I drizzled a little lemon glaze over top, too, which I complemented that toasted nut flavour beautifully. Two of these, and a cup of tea, and afternoon snack time is perfectly arranged. Hazelnut and Olive Oil Shortbread Makes 18 to 24 small cookie slices Ingredients: 1 1/4 cup hazelnut meal A shortbread that consists of hazelnuts, olive oil and a touch of lemon — and very little else. You can mix these cookies up in less than 5 minutes, and they bake off in a flash 3/4 cup flour 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup powdered sugar, plus 1/4 cup for glaze 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 lemon, zested and juiced 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup extra-virgin light olive oil Method: Heat the oven to 375 F. Whisk together the hazelnut meal, flour, brown sugar, 1/4 cup powdered sugar, salt and lemon zest. Whisk in the vanilla and olive oil. The dough will be sandy and quite crumbly. Press the dough firmly into a 8- by 8-inch (or 9- by 9inch) dish. Bake for 20 minutes or until just lightly browned around the edges. Immediately cut the shortbread into diamonds or squares. Let cool completely before lifting them out of the pan, however. Meanwhile, whisk together 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice and the remaining 1/4 cup powdered sugar and drizzle over the warm cookies. 31 32 Sunday, February 5, 2012 CHANNEL SURFING www.qatar-tribune.com BEST ON TV TONIGHT 7:45 pm CNN International: CNN MARKET PLACE MIDDLE EAST 11:05 pm Disney Channel: THE SUITE LIFE OF ZACK AND CODY 7:00 pm Fox Sports: 2012 U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS- PAIRS FREE CHAMPIONSHIP LATE GROUP 7:00 pm Crime & Investigation: MANHUNTERS: FUGITIVE TASK FORCE TV PRIME TIME GUIDE 7:00 PM OSN NEWS CNN INTERNATIONAL CARTOON NETWORK DISNEY CHANNEL LIVE MSNBC WEEKENDS WITH ALEX WITT SUNDAY GLOBAL EXCHANGE REGULAR SHOW SO RANDOM CNN MARKETPLACE AFRICA 7:30 PM GLOBAL EXCHANGE 8:00 PM 8:30 PM GENERATOR REX CNN MARKETPLACE MIDDLE EAST 9:00 PM HAVE A LAUGH ABC THIS WEEK WITH CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR LIVING GOLF 10:00 PM LIVE MSNBC HARDBALL WITH CHRIS MATTHEWS AFRICAN VOICES COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG FANTASTIC FOUR: WORLD’S GREATEST HEROES MY BABYSITTER’S A VAMPIRE DESERT CAR KINGS GOOD LUCK CHARLIE MAN ON EARTH WITH TONY ROBINSON CNNGO LIVE MSNBC THE ED SHOW FISH HOOKS STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS BEN 10 FAREED ZAKARIA GPS NEWS CHANNELS EXTREME SPORTS FOX SPORTS KENDRA KID IN A CANDY STORE PINKS: LOSE THE RACE, LOSE YOUR RIDE 2012 U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS- PAIRS FREE CHAMPIONSHIP LATE GROUP KOURTNEY & KIM TAKE NEW YORK THE SUITE LIFE OF ZACK AND CODY LUKE NGUYEN’S VIETNAM E! ROM the balcony of Quinta do Bucanero, a pousada in the centre of Praia do Rosa, the appeal of the Brazilian seaside town is obvious. Perched on top of a cliff, the 10-room hotel is surrounded by a tropical jungle and forested mountains, with views of a long, sweeping stretch of golden sand and two lagoons. Surfers dot the waves, and orchids scent the air. It’s this natural beauty that first attracted Jacqueline Biazus, who owns Bucanero along with her husband, nearly four decades ago, when she was an 18-year-old hippie – and to return 15 years later to build the hotel. “Back then, there was nothing here in Rosa,” she said as she sat at a balcony table overlooking the scenery. “It’s not like it is today.” Located in the southern state of Santa Catarina, Praia do Rosa is about one hour by car south of Florianopolis, the popular state capital, known for the more than 40 beaches that have become a mainstay for the international jet set. Despite its lovely setting, Rosa has been slower to attract travellers or a tourism infrastructure. Even today, it has only two paved streets; the rest are simply dirt tracks. But a stream of new residents who have settled here in recent years to open pousadas, restaurants is turning this formerly undeveloped spot into a chic beachside destination that may begin to draw some of Florianopolis’s regular visitors. For now, it offers delightful natural beauty and a curious combination of sophistication and a barefoot, laid-back atmosphere. During the antipodal summer, night life usually begins at sunset, when groups of board-carrying surfers head back from the beach, and couples start filling the tables of the elegant boites, some of which overlook the ocean and lagoons. Praia do Rosa literally means “rosy beach.” The name comes not from the colour of its sand but from Dorvino Manoel da Rosa, one of the first fishermen to occupy a house by the beach in the 1970s. Back then, there wasn’t much activity here; the main road leading to the town, BR 101, which connects Rosa with Florianopolis, didn’t yet exist, and access was difficult. Rosa was merely a simple fishing village. A few years later, groups of Brazilians in their late teens and early 20s discovered the area. Many of them, including Biazus, came from Porto Alegre, a large coastal city about 5 1/2 hours south. “The beaches down by us were ugly so we headed up north to find better ones and stumbled onto Rosa,” said Biazus, who first visited in 1978. Why Rosa? There simply weren’t options closer to home that had the same remoteness or such perfect waves for surfing, she said. Since there were no hotels, she and her friends rented homes from fishermen living by the beach and spent their days taking advantage of the waves. Evenings were spent around bonfires, playing guitar and listening to bossa nova. They were unfazed by the lack of electricity, which locals say didn’t arrive until sometime in the early ‘80s. Today, these same hippies are at the root of the new wave of activity in Rosa. Well-educated entrepreneurs like Biazus, who trained as a lawyer, have opened restaurants, hotels and boutiques. Others have followed, and in recent years more than three dozen businesses have opened. Judging by the number of buildings under construction, there is more growth to come. The population is still small – there are about 20,000 people living in Ibiraquera, the area that includes Rosa, compared with 400,000 in Florianopolis – though things are beginning to change. Hippies singing around campfires on the beach have been mostly replaced by sun-tanning women in bikinis and men in board shorts, like Fernanda Pereira, 29, and her husband, Ricardo, 30. The couple, who live in the Brazilian city of Curitiba, an inland city in the state of Parana, started vacationing here annually a few years ago and said the increasing number of hot spots, combined with the attractive setting, keeps them coming back. “There is a cosmopolitan vibe to Rosa that didn’t exist before,” said Fernanda Pereira, who works in advertising, “but it’s just as unspoiled.” Restaurants, drawing from the plentiful seafood coming in from the ocean, are also a draw. The most notable is Lua Marinha, opened in 2001, which serves unfussy but refined seafood dishes using only local ingredients. From a wooden deck that overlooks a lagoon, diners can see fishermen setting out to catch offerings for the next night’s dinner. A recent meal started with an octopus ceviche that got its heat from a sprinkling of finely minced jalapenos, followed by a main dish for two of small and exceptionally sweet shrimp, accompanied by a thick sauce of mixed herbs. For most of these proprietors, setting up shop in Rosa is less about getting rich and more about soaking up the riches around them. Menu-Maruque said he used to run watering holes in Ibiza and Buenos Aires – where he earned more than he ever has at Beleza Pura. “There are better places to do business than Rosa so you’re not necessarily going to come here for a financial windfall,” he said. “But no other place in the world is as beautiful.” Indeed, stunning vistas are available almost anywhere in town, and walks through the surrounding mountains lead to beaches accessible only by foot and completely empty. You might even spot whales breaching, most commonly July through November. During those walks, keep an eye out for colourful flora, including red and yellow bromeliad plants, ruby coloured acucena flowers, orchids and jackfruit trees laden with football-size fruit. As travellers have taken notice, rooms at pousadas are getting harder to come by during the peak season and are also fuller during the off-peak months. Biazus said that Bucanero is almost completely booked three months in advance starting in December and is now also busy during the typically slower spring. The Morada da Praia do Rosa is a year-old pousada that’s fully booked on weekends even during the off-season according to its owner, Demian Alaimo, another Buenos Aires transplant. But while those who come here might think of Rosa as the next must-visit destination on the Brazilian coast, residents aren’t interested in it being the next anything. “Of course we need travellers to come support us, but we don’t want everyone to discover Rosa and for it to have a reputation as a party town,” Biazus said. “Coming here is really about enjoying the beauty and peacefulness, and with too many people, it’s hard to do that.” WHERE TO STAY Quinta do Bucanero- carved into the side of a cliff, this luxurious 10room pousada has a small spa and beautiful gardens. Rates from 450 reais, or $255 at 1.76 reais to the dollar. Morada da Praia do Rosa. Rates from 240 reais. WHERE TO EAT Beleza Pura- A meal for two, without drinks, is about 60 reais. Lua Marinha- Dinner for two, without drinks, is about 150 reais. Sapore di Pasta- Dinner for two is about 180 reais. WHAT TO DO Arrange tailor-made trips to Rosa through the Latin-American travel specialist Dehouche based in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. A balcony at the hotel Qunita do Bucanero. The 36-year-old has featured in a 30-second commercial for new range of underwears of a high street store H&M, but it has embarrassed his sons, reports contactmusic.com. “The boys are pretty embarrassed about it. They’re kids, so they said ‘Oh my God daddy, not again. That’s really good, but everyone’s going to see you in your pants (underwear)’,” Beckham told Britain’s Daily Mirror. “I can’t walk around the house naked any more now that we have a daughter. I’m still OK in underwear, but not naked. With the boys it wasn’t a problem as they’re naked all of the time. But now with a daughter, the naked days are over,” he added. According to showbiz.com, music mogul Simon Cowell is keen to make his show as interesting as possible, so he is offering the whopping amount to the singer, who recently gave birth to her first child with husband Jay-Z. “He wants a big name female star on the panel. Mariah Carey is good, but she’s not that hot today,” a source told mediatakeout.com. “He wants Beyonce because that would immediately give him the bounce needed to beat American Idol.” DAVID BECKHAM Jessica Chastain 35 Beyonce offered $500 million to judge The X Factor Beckham in underwear embarrasses sons Scene unscene www.qatar-tribune.com BEYONCE KNOWLES Vanity Fair picks Tinseltown’s leading ladies The 11 stars picked alongside Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Chastain (The Help) for the prestigious 3-page cover include last year’s best actress Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Albert Nobbs actress Mia Wasikowska REUTERS ANITY Fair unveiled the cover of its annual Hollywood issue on recently, featuring “fresh stars of 2012” who were chosen for the impact they made through movies, including Oscar nominees Rooney Mara and Jessica Chastain. “We’re looking for actresses who are doing great work on the screen. And if they’re young and beautiful, well that doesn’t hurt either,” wrote Vanity Fair features editor Jane Sarkin in an email to Reuters. Most are in their 20s. The eldest is Paula Patton at age 36. The 11 stars picked alongside Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Chastain (The Help) for the prestigious 3page cover include last year’s best actress Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Albert Nobbs actress Mia Wasikowska. They are joined on the cover insert by Martha Marcy May Marlene actress Elizabeth Olsen, The Descendants breakout star Shailene Woodley, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol action lady Patton, Abduction star Lily Collins, Pariah actress Adepero Oduye, Chicago native writer-actor Brit Marling and Like Crazy actress Felicity Jones. “This group has solid acting cred. Some have already taken on great roles, and I think that V Rooney Mara all of these girls are on the go-to list for every film currently being cast,” explained Sarkin. The art-deco style shoot, which sees the ladies wearing pastel coloured dresses with feathers and furs inspired by the Jazz age of the 1920s and ‘30s, was conducted by famed photographer Mario Testino. The annual cover of the March issue, which has featured stars such as Anne Hathaway, James Franco, Carey Mulligan and Amy Adams in recent years, was described by Sarkin as a “casting couch” that helped raise actor’s profiles. The issue has often been criticised in the past for its lack of racial diversity among the stars and despite featuring two African American women on this year’s cover, the magazine drew critical fire again. Dodai Stewart, editor of feminist website Jezebel, noted that the two black actresses, Patton and Oduye, in the 3page cover were excluded from the left “power panel” and put on the insert, saying “it’s pretty obvious that Hollywood has a serious problem with diversity.” Film website Cinemablend.com also lamented the exclusion of this year’s Oscar nominees Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, stars of The Help, and questioned the inclusion of Collins. “We’re very pleased with our cover and the talented women who adorn all three panels,” Sarkin said in response to the critics. The March issue of Vanity Fair will be available on newsstands from February 2. Elvis... Through his Daughter’s Eyes exhibit opens REUTERS LVIS Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, gave visitors to Graceland an inside look at her life with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll at his Memphis estate recently as she celebrated her 44th birthday with the opening of a new exhibit. The exhibit is called “Elvis... Through His Daughter’s Eyes,” and displays artifacts including Lisa Marie’s baby footprints, tricycle, a record player and her crib, said Kevin Kern, director of public relations for Elvis Presley Enterprises. “This exhibit is something she has been very excited about,” Kern said, adding that it also includes family photos and home movies featuring Lisa Marie’s childhood and her relationship with her father before E Lisa Marie Presley he died in 1977. On an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday, Lisa Marie Presley showed off a scarf on which Elvis had written the words “I love my Lisa, Daddy” from 1972. She told the show that she remembered her father singing Can’t Help Falling in Love to her. She said the new exhibit includes some of her dad’s “most amazing clothes ever” and a small chest containing personal items he took with him on tour, including a photo of his father and his driver’s license. Twenty-five people were chosen from more than 2,000 entries for the first day of the exhibit, and each was allowed to bring a guest. Among the visitors was Tom Termeer, 39, who with his wife Kristen, 35, made the 15-hour drive from Ontario, Canada. Termeer had been scheduled for a meeting with his doctor on the day in prepara- tion for brain surgery to help relieve pain from cluster headaches. But once he discovered that he had won the lottery to meet Lisa Marie Presley, “I had to blow that appointment off to come here,” he said. “One of the biggest reasons I did that is my surgery at the end of the month. Everybody said ‘Be Positive,’ and I am, but there is a slight chance it may not work and a slight chance I may die,” Termeer said. “This is filling the bucket list.” He said that when Lisa Marie Presley learned how far he had travelled and what he is facing she spent extra time with him and his wife. “It was overwhelming. It was hard to control my composure,” Termeer said, adding, “I couldn’t help but bawl my eyes out.” It was his second trip to Graceland, which draws an average of 600,000 visitors a year, but his wife’s first. “Elvis was my guy,” he said. 36 Sunday, February 5, 2012 BOLLYWOOD www.qatar-tribune.com Scene unscene Emraan a fabulous co-star, says Bipasha It’s my birth right to speak Hindi: Sunny BIPASHA Basu has teamed up with Emraan Hashmi for Raaz 3 and describes her co-star as fabulous and accommodating. “Emraan is a fab actor and accommodating co-star! BIPASHA BASU SUNNY LEONE Ranbir Kapoor’s loss, Prateik Babbar’s gain TRUBUNE NEWS NETWORK VERYONE is talking about the sizzling chemistry between Liverpool lass Amy Jackson and Mumbai ka chokra Prateik Babbar. Unlike other fake ‘encounter specialists’ which emerge everytime a new pair is introduced in a love story, the Amy-Prateik chemistry in Ek Deewana Tha is for real. The entire unit vouches for the twosome being absolutely smitten with one another. Says director Gautham Menon, “Our film is getting a positive vibe. People are saying the lead pair is looking good together.” And to think it could have been Ranbir Kapoor romancing Amy in Ek Deewana Tha. Gautham Menon is one of Tamil cinema’s leading lights of filmmaking. But in Mumbai Ranbir Kapoor doesn’t know him, nor wish to work with him. Apparently when Menon wished to approach Ranbir for his new Hindi film, the star refused to meet him. Embarrassed to talk about his failure to connect with the Kapoor star the hurt and angry Menon, who has worked with the likes of Kamal Haasan, Madhavan and Suriya in the South, finally admits, “Ranbir was my first choice for Ek Deewana Tha. I tried to get in touch with him. Forget about meeting Ranbir. I couldn’t even meet his secretary. Yes, even the secretary refused to meet me.” This is when Gautham turned away, his pride and dignity seriously challenged, to sign Prateik for the film. Says Menon, “One reason why I’ve taken 11 years to make my second Hindi film is because I am comfortable working with the stars in the South, as they are with me. In Mumbai, I feel like a stranger. In fact I’ve had a number of offers to direct Hindi films. Vipul Shah wanted me to do “Our film is getting a positive vibe. People are saying the lead pair is looking good together.
