We’re not saving a life.” As a spokeswoman for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a non- Kristin Bauer and husband Abri van Straten (right) profit health organisation whose goals include along with their pets promoting animal-free testing, Bauer has a mission: to get more people to use makeup and toiletries that have not been tested on rabbits, guinea pigs, mice or rats. And while “cruelty-free” has been a basic mantra of certain earthy lines like Aveda, the Body Shop and Kiss My Face, for decades, it’s increasingly been taken up by new and glamourous proponents. The models Josie Maran (josiemarancosmetics.com) and Christie Brinkley (christiebrinkleyskincare.com) and the designer Stella McCartney (Care by Stella McCartney) are among those who have started cosmetics lines developed without animal testing. Companies like Clinique, Tarte and Almay have stopped the practice. Other lesserknown brands, like Pixi, Organic Male OM4 (a skin-care line for men) and Dr’s Remedy, an all-natural nail polish, never started it. “It was important for us to know that there would not be any animals harmed in the development or testing of our product,” said On March 11, 2009, the European Union the co-founder of Dr’s Remedy, Adam banned cosmetics and personal-products Cirlincione, a podiatrist in New York. Consumers seem to agree, said Nancy companies from testing their products on Beck, a former science and policy adviser for animals for things like skin irritancy, sensithe physicians’ group, who conducted a tivity to light and acute toxicity. The decision also banned the import of cosmetics report on the topic while working there. “Part of it is awareness about the issue in containing ingredients that have been anigeneral,” said Beck, who has a doctorate in mal-tested in this way. By March 11, 2013, microbiology and immunology. “Science has companies will be forbidden from further evolved, and we have the technology now tests designed to establish longer-term toxithat maybe we didn’t have 30 or 40 years city. But no such laws exist in the United States. ago to do safety assessments without using animals. So having the methods in place, The closest is the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011, and companies bothering to take the time which was introduced on June 24, (it has yet and making the investment into developing to be adopted) and encourages, among other things, the development of alternatives to aninew methods, has a lot to do with it, too.” But while some companies have stopped mal testing. That isn’t sufficient for Vicki Katrinak, the testing on animals, getting them to do so hasn’t been easy. “It’s hard to get them to administrator for the Coalition for Consumer talk to you,” Beck said. “You start out by Information on Cosmetics, a consortium of writing a letter: ‘We’d love to talk to you animal protection groups (including the about your approach to testing and could we Humane Society of the United States, the Doris Day Animal League and the American meet?’ Usually you don’t hear back.” T “It’s so simple for me: We shouldn’t be torturing another living being for mascara when we don’t have to. It seems so odd when you think of shaving cream and a bunny, or mascara and a guinea pig. We’re not saving a life.” Startalk Lifeline Anti-Vivisection Society) in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. “We are worried that without a full ban being incorporated into the language of that bill, there will be more testing,” she said. What’s more, the “cruelty-free” label that some personal-care products and cosmetics companies have adopted doesn’t have a universally agreed-upon meaning. “The FDA says on its website that companies can make any claim about their animal testing policies because there is no regulated definition of what is cruelty-free,” Katrinak said. Companies may say their products are “cruelty-free” or “not tested on animals,” she said, but their claims might refer only to the finished product, and not to specific ingredients (the bulk of animal testing happens on the ingredient level). Or they hire outside laboratories to do the testing for them. Even “all-natural” claims are confusing. Michelle Larner, a makeup artist in New York, thought she was using only products not tested on animals because she favours lines aimed at customers with sensitive skin. But then she went to the website of the advocacy organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which lists companies that do and don’t test on animals. “I saw a few brands that fall into the ‘natural’ range that I just assumed would be cruelty-free,” she said. She was dismayed to discover that “everything I use, from mascara, toothpaste, deodorant and feminine products were on the list. Even my laundry cleaning products are on this ‘yes’ list.” A majority of items made without animal testing are independent brands that are not readily available at chain drugstores, department stores or specialty stores, she added. It also would be easier “if the products had a disclaimer saying, ‘Yes, we test on animals,”’ Larner said. “I would not buy it.” Some organisations have been trying to change that. PETA licenses its “cruelty-free bunny” logo. Leaping Bunny, a program run by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics, licenses a rabbit logo to companies the organisation has certified as cruelty-free. It also provides consumers with a list of these companies. So far, about a third of the 400 certified companies use the logo, said Katrinak, including Burt’s Bees, Tom’s of Maine, the Body Shop and Urban Decay. Not everyone, though, thinks that eliminating animal research entirely is feasible. “Most ingredients in cosmetic products were tested long ago, so very little testing is done nowadays,” said Frankie Trull, president of the Foundation for Biomedical Research, which promotes humane and responsible animal research. But “in some cases, animal models are still a necessary part of ensuring ingredients will not cause harm to people.” Bauer, who favours Almay and bareFaced Mineral Cosmetics, is unmoved by this argument. She often checks PETA’s website to see which products do and don’t test on animals. “It takes five minutes to go through this list,” she said. “Sometimes the non-tested are more organic and natural. Sometimes they’re even cheaper.” Radcliffe returns to small screen I have the worst memory: Courtney Cox ACTOR Daniel Radcliffe is returning to US television screens with the morning show Live! With Kelly. The 22-year-old previously hosted weekly comedy show Saturday Night Live. Now he has confirmed he will be back on the small screen to co-host Live! With Kelly along with Kelly Ripa on January 31, reports contactmusic.com. Ripa is currently looking for a permanent replacement for her long time sidekick Regis Philbin, who retired from the show last year. ACTRESS Courtney Cox says she hardly remembers anything of her past achievements. The 47-year-old relies on friend Jennifer Aniston to recall their days on hit show Friends. “I have the worst memory. I don’t remember anything. Jennifer Aniston can remember every episode of Friends, what we were wearing, what we said, what we were doing while we said it. I don’t remember any of it,” showbizspy.com quoted Cox as saying. 30 Sunday, January 22, 2012 PLAYHOUSE www.qatar-tribune.com Beetle Bailey Blondie YESTERDAY’S ANSWER Popeye Spiderman LEARN ARABIC Twabeh Stamps Jameh Collecting Msawdeh Draft Zits Bareed Postal Risalah Letter Maktab Bareed Post Office Dennis the Menace The Lockhorns Phone: 44666810 FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS CONTACT US AT: Fax: 44654975 Post Box No: 23493 Email: admin@qatar-tribune.com S TA R TA L K ARIES [mar 21 – apr 19] People will notice you today, no matter how briefly, especially bosses, parents, teachers and VIPs. HEALTH Your smartphone may be stressing you out ALAN MOZES NYT SYNDICATE OMPULSIVELY checking your smartphone may not actually be that smart, British researchers warn. The cautionary observation stems from a new study that finds an association between the increasingly popular use of Web-enabled cellphones and a rise in stress levels. The reason: a relentless need to immediately review and respond to each and every incoming message, alert or bing. Surprisingly, however, investigators did not link stress to the professional use of smartphones for work purp o s e s . Rather, it’s the personal use of such devices, to keep tabs on friendships and social networking “news,” that is the culprit. “Smartphones are being used more and more to help people cope with different aspects of their life,” said study author Richard Balding, a psychologist in the department of psychology at the University of Worcester, in England. “But the more they’re being used the more we’re actually becoming a bit dependent upon them, and actually courting stress instead of relieving it.” To explore how the use of iPhones, Androids, Blackberries and other similar hand-held devices may elevate stress, Balding and his team conducted psychometric stress tests among more than 100 participants, including university students, retail workers and public-sector employees. All were also asked to complete a survey regarding their phone use. The authors found that people typically first acquire such phones to better manage their work obligations. In turn, however, they noted that users eventually end up sliding into more personal smartphone interactions, eschewing work-related usage in favour of wanting to maintain control of one’s virtual C It’s the personal use of such devices, to keep tabs on friendships and social networking “news,” that is the major cause of stress social network. As this pattern of use takes flight so does stress, the researchers observed. And, in that regard, more is definitely more: The more often someone checks a phone for personal reasons the more stress rises. In extreme cases, the pressure to keep in touch can become extreme, such that the most stressed users actually perceive incoming alerts (via, for example, phone vibrations) that never really happen. “Now, certainly it’s good to keep connected,” Balding acknowledged. “But everyone needs a break. Some time on your own. Otherwise there’s a risk that the stress and tension that builds up from keeping engaged can end up having a negative impact on relationships.” Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, said that while the observations struck her as “reasonable,” more work is needed to establish a true cause-and-effect. “It could be that people who are already more stressed out and neurotic are more likely to check their phones compulsively in the first place, that people who have high stress levels to begin with are the ones who need to have their phones on all the time,” she said. “So we need to see what’s actually causing what.” “Of course, there’s lots of research that shows that truly living in the moment makes people happier,” Lyubomirsky noted. “And clearly we’re less likely to savour the moment if we’re checking the phone. But at the same time, it’s not always a bad thing. It saves me time. It makes being in touch so much easier, and enables multitasking. There are plenty of people who can gain pleasure out of sending a thank-you email to someone or surfing the Web for information. So it’s how you use the phone that matters, not the phone itself.” Sunday, January 22, 2012 www.qatar-tribune.com 31 32 Sunday, January 22, 2012 CHANNEL SURFING www.qatar-tribune.com BEST ON TV TONIGHT 8:00 pm CNN International: WORLD SPORT 7:50 pm Cartoon Network: GENERATOR REX 6:00 pm Fox Sports: BIG TEN MEN’S BASKETBALL OHIO STATE AT NEBRASKA 7:40 pm Delivery HD Showcase: ROGUE NATURE WITH DAVE SALMONI TV PRIME TIME GUIDE 7:00 PM OSN NEWS CNN INTERNATIONAL CARTOON NETWORK DISNEY CHANNEL LIVE MSNBC WEEKENDS WITH ALEX WITT SUNDAY GLOBAL EXCHANGE REGULAR SHOW SO RANDOM 8:00 PM 8:30 PM WORLD SPORT 9:00 PM ABC THIS WEEK WITH CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR 9:30 PM HAVE A LAUGH CNN MARKETPLACE MIDDLE EAST AIMING FOR GOLD COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG 10:30 PM INTERNATIONAL DESK GOOD LUCK CHARLIE STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS SHAKE IT UP 11:30 PM BEN 10: ULTIMATE ALIEN THE GATEWAY 11:00 PM BEN 10 FUTURE CITIES LIVE MSNBC THE ED SHOW ROGUE NATURE WITH DAVE SALMONI MY BABYSITTER’S A VAMPIRE 10:00 PM LIVE MSNBC HARDBALL WITH CHRIS MATTHEWS FAREED ZAKARIA GPS COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG NEWS CHANNELS EXTREME SPORTS FOX SPORTS KENDRA KID IN A CANDY STORE MAN’S WORK BIG TEN MEN’S BASKETBALL OHIO STATE AT NEBRASKA [18:00] AWARDS FASHION POLICE SWAT THROUGH THE WORMHOLE W/ MORGAN FREEMAN KOURTNEY & KIM TAKE NEW YORK CRIME CENTRAL AMA MOTOCROSS 2011 FOOD NETWORK CHALLENGE GRILL IT! But when he renovated his small Greenwich Village apartment, he ripped out the tub because it didn’t evoke the right mood. The mood he wanted, he explains, was that of a super-deluxe hotel, a place that would work for him in the short term – a stopover, until he starts a family. He replaced the tub with a steam shower of such intensity that someone once mistook the steam pouring out the windows for smoke and called the fire department. The bathroom walls are, of course, marble. The closet, between the living space and the bedroom, is open, allowing for fast access. Floors and ceilings have been insulated, so Carfaro’s music will not annoy the neighbours. And the furniture, which has traces of midcentury modern, comes mostly from his Soho furniture company, Desiron. Carfaro is a man on the move, no one could doubt. He has been featured in ads for American Express and Levi’s. Carfaro’s apartment, which seems to have all the accoutrements a man on the move could want, is just 550 square feet. He designed it himself, in a gut renovation that cost about $150,000. Was he on a budget? Carfaro, who has a range of charming grins, smiles a little smile. Not really, he says. If that creates an impression of a man who grew up rich and entitled, it is incorrect. Carfaro grew up in Long Valley, N.J., where his father and grandfather did decorative ironwork and his mother was a delivery room nurse. After the death of his parents’ fourth child, they took in foster children – 23, by Carfaro’s count. The family finances were up and down. One year, Carfaro recalls, his father bought a half-dozen snowmobiles as Christmas presents; another year there was nothing. But Carfaro, the oldest child, was ambitious even as a boy. The Overdo-It Kid, he calls himself. If someone asked him to paint the trim on a house, he’d do the rest of it as well. He learned ironwork from his family, but as a designer, he is largely self-taught. The one year he studied design and architecture at the University of Grenoble, before getting his degree in French and Economics at Rutgers College, he was more interested in skiing the Alps than learning to design. Two years ago, Carfaro F Frank Carfaro’s apartment, which seems to have all the accoutrements a man on the move could want, is just 550 square feet. He designed it himself, in a gut renovation that cost about $150,000 bought what was a onebedroom apartment in a nondescript apartment house for $585,000. It was not in bad shape, but Carfaro wanted to create a place that was entirely his own. He removed walls, ceilings and floors, finding an extra 25 square feet of space. The galley kitchen was replaced with an open kitchen. The wall between the bedroom and living room was replaced with a handsome storage unit that has an ethanol EcoSmart fireplace in the base. The bedroom now has a platform bed he designed, with storage units covered in shagreen surrounding the leather headboard and glass shelves at the foot for shoes. One of the home’s most appealing features is a plaster-and-decoupage wall in the living room that incorporates images of things that hold meaning for Carfaro: a map from the Underground in London, where he lived for a time, old fishing lures and a flapper wearing a half-dozen bowler hats. The wall, created by Jodi Cohan, a designer who does faux finishing, was inspired by the peeling wallpaper in the home of the speech therapist in The King’s Speech. “You could see the history of that building in that wall,” Carfaro says. And that long-horned steer skull hanging on the wall? “I got it in a shop in Colorado,” he says. “I love that adventure stuff. I imagine how this cow lived and who drove him. It took me back to a time I would have liked to live in.” What about the long paddle beside it? “I do a lot of paddle boarding,” Carfaro says. “It’s a relatively new sport: You stand up on what looks like a surfboard and you paddle. I just did a 24-mile race around Manhattan.” LIFESTYLE A place to rest in luxury Sunday, January 22, 2012 HOLLYWOOD Scene unscene www.qatar-tribune.com Wedding is stress for Kristen Bell Success isn’t everything: Naomi Watts ACTRESS Kristen Bell, who has been engaged to Dax Shepard for two years, says there’s no need for a wedding as it will bring “too much stress”. “We consider ourselves already married - we already wear the rings, I don’t want a wedding. It’s too much stress,” showbizspy.com quoted her as saying. “I think one of the most important things you can do in your life is pair up with someone. I think living alongside someone and sharing everything with them is just beautiful,” she added. ACTRESS Naomi Watts does not believe that success is “everything” and finds life in Hollywood “uncertain”. “Acting is such an uncertain kind of life. You struggle so much at the beginning of your career - at least I did - and then you suddenly find yourself working all the time and after six or seven years you realise that maybe work and success isn’t everything,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted the 43-year-old as saying. Naomi was recently seen in Clint Eastwood’s J Edgar opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. KRISTEN BELL Man pleads no contest to Halle Berry’s charge Franco first approached Berry’s home on July 9, 2011, when she was talking to her manager and saw through a glass door that Franco — whom she does not know — was in the gated backyard, states the papers the actress filed in court, last year Halle Berry REUTERS MAN with a criminal history who showed up at Oscar winner Halle Berry’s house in the Hollywood Hills pleaded no contest on Thursday to a charge of stalking her, and a judge ordered him to stay 200 yards away from the actress for 10 years. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Dennis Landin also handed down a 386-day jail sentence to the 28-year-old man, Richard Franco. But Franco will soon be released because he has already served half that term behind bars since his arrest in July, and he is being given credit for the other half of the sentence under measures to reduce overcrowding in the Los Angeles County jail system, prosecutors said. Franco, who according to Los Angeles police has a history of violence, theft and drug offenses, was found to have a book with “nonsensical ramblings” and Berry’s name in his handwriting, the actress said in court papers filed last year. Franco first approached Berry’s home on July 9, 2011, when she was talking to her manager and saw through a glass door that Franco — whom she does not know — was in the gated backyard, the papers stated. Berry’s manager yelled at Franco and he left, she said in the papers. The actress further said that on July 10, she went to her kitchen to get a Diet Coke and noticed Franco was on the other side of a glass door, less than one foot away. She said she ran upstairs to call police. That evening, arrangements were made to have armed security officers at her home, and Franco was caught when he returned the next day. Los Angeles police Detective John Gregozek testified in court last year that he spoke to Berry a day after the defendant’s arrest. “She was afraid for her safety and that of her daughter, as well,” Gregozek said. “She hired armed security to stay at her residence 24 hours.” As a result of his plea, a residential burglary charge against Franco was dismissed. In addition to jail time and the stay away order, Franco was placed on five years probation and ordered to undergo one year of psychological counselling, said Los Angeles deputy district attorney Wendy Seagall. A Katherine Heigl keen on return to Grey’s Anatomy TRIBUNE NEWS NETWEORK ATHERINE Heigl’s stint on Grey’s Anatomy certainly wasn’t without its drama — on-screen and off — and now the actress says she wants to check back into Seattle Grace and see what her Izzie Stevens character is up to. E! Online says she has already let the Grey producers know she wants to return to the medical drama to find out if her “floundering” Izzie finally got her act together. “I’ve told them I want to (return),” Heigl said. “I don’t know … being a showrunner and being a writer of a TV series like that is so complicated … she’s (series creator Shonda Rhimes) balancing about 40 different storylines, so I don’t know if it fits into their sort of vision for this season or next or however many seasons it goes. “I really, really, really want to see where K (Izzie) is,” Heigl continued. “I just want to know what happened to her and where she went and what she’s doing now. My idea is that she actually, like, figures it out, and finds some success and does really well in a different hospital, because she was always floundering … she was always one step behind the eight ball, and I want to see that girl take some power back.” Heigl, one of the show’s original cast members, won a Supporting Actress Emmy for her role on Grey’s in 2007, and left Grey’s Anatomy in 2010, saying she wanted to devote time to raising her daughter. But her stint on the series included a bitter 2007 contract negotiation that became public, as reported by People magazine. Heigl also made negative, and public, comments to the Los Angeles Times about the show’s writers and storylines when she refused to submit her name for consideration in the 2008 Emmy competition. E! Online says she has already let the Grey’s producers know she wants to return to the medical drama to find out if her “floundering” Izzie finally got her act together 35 NAOMI WATTS Johnny Depp, Vanessa close to split? REUTERS OHNNY Depp’s 14-year romance with French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis has hit the rocks, People magazine claimed recently, and the couple are living largely separate lives. In a cover story for this week’s issue of People called “Love Gone Wrong”, the celebrity magazine quoted several unnamed sources as saying the pair’s relationship is nearing an end. The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 48, and Paradis, 39, never married but have been together since 1998 and have two children. They divide their time between France and the United States. People magazine noted that the pair have not appeared on the red carpet together for more than a year, missing both the Cannes film festival in May 2011 and the Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday, where Depp was a presenter. “According to Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis (right) m u l t i p l e sources....(they) are all but officially finished,” People said. Depp’s representatives did not return calls for comment on the People story, which hit newsstands on Friday. Go away with love. Love to love no hate guys,” tweeted Arjun, who is now working on Heroine. ACTRESS Kajol, last seen in Toonpur Ka Superhero, says she is extremely happy with the way her life has shaped up and the doting mother of two can’t stop gushing about her kids. “I am having a blast, I am having a great time, a fabulous time with my life right now. I have two wonderful kids, I am enjoying myself thoroughly. I am glowing because I am spending so much time with my kids,” the 37-year-old said while launching a bag store, Malaga Bespoke. The actress admits she is not considering any new projects for the time being, but hopes to be part of a good project in the near future. “I hope so (to do a film)... but only when the right time comes, when the right offer comes, not before that,” said Kajol. ARJUN RAMPAL Oprah splashes colour in a traditional sari Oprah Winfrey NIVEDITA SHARMA IANS HE usually sports the corporate look with a skirt and coat, but international talk show host Oprah Winfrey created a stir in a Tarun Tahiliani orange and golden Kanjeevaram sari on her maiden visit to India. The veteran designer says she insisted on a traditional outfit. “We were requested for some styles, so I picked some images of outfits which I thought would suit her and then they (her team) chose what she would like to wear. It was pretty simply done,” Tahilaini told IANS. “When I began to select images for Oprah, the first thing I thought was that a vibrant colour would suit her perfectly, so I decided that a bright orange or bright pink would look great. She was also looking for something that was a bit more traditional and something that was very Indian, so I immediately thought of Kanjeevaram,” he added. The designer, who has a celebrity clientele comprising Shilpa Shetty, Malaika Arora Khan, Neha Dhupia, Lisa Haydon and Minissha Lamba, admits Winfrey completely justified the look. “I think she looked radiant in the outfit. The colour really suited her and she really made a point! Since we made her a pre-constructed drape sari, she was also super comfortable. Even the blouse was a structured corset one,” Tahiliani said. Tahiliani, who has been in the business of fashion since he was 23, is one of the very few designers who gave the six-yard wonder a modern avtaar, by blending it with western techniques. His saris are popular in India as well as in the global market. S Winfrey, who is in India to shoot her new show, is not the only international celebrity to have worn a Tahiliani creation. Pop star Lady Gaga, who was in India during the F1 after-party, performed wearing a sariinspired gown, also designed by Tahiliani. “I loved what Lady Gaga did to the concept saree. She took one of my designs, which was a modern version of the sari, and she made adjustments to it to make it ‘more New York’, as she said in her concert. I think the modifications she made suited her style and her personality and made quite an impression on the stage.” the 49-year-old said. The designer doesn’t find any major difference between designing attires for Bollywood or Hollywood. “It’s not really about Hollywood or Bollywood per se. It’s more about the individual I’m designing for and what suits them. So I design something for someone based on a variety of things like what is in sync with their personal style, what suits their skin tone or their height.” “So, for Oprah, as I said earlier, we thought vibrant colours and traditional weaves would do well, whereas I think Lady Gaga looked stunning in ivory,” he explained. India is gradually emerging as a global fashion hub with many international designers extensively creating India-inspired collections. At the ongoing Milan Fashion Week, designer Frankie Morello showcased a collection where models were seen wearing silk lungis accessorised with bindis on their foreheads. In December last year, one of French fashion designer Chanel’s collection was dominated by Nehru jackets and he had models don the Indian jewellery piece, maang-tika, on their foreheads. To this trend, Tahiliani said: “India inspiration is everywhere, from Chanel catwalks to Frankie Morello.” CTRESS Lara Dutta and tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi became proud parents of a daughter on Friday afternoon. Mahesh copied Abhishek Bachchan’s style of announcing his fatherhood, to break the news on his Twitter page. “ITS A GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @DuttaLara. I Love u....,” Mahesh tweeted a la Abhishek, who was blessed with a little angel in November last year. The mother and child are healthy and fine, said a source close to the actress. The 33-year-old former beauty queen married Mahesh in February last year. In August 2011, Lara confirmed she is pregnant with their first child. Before going into labour, she made her last public appearance at a party on Monday organised in honour of international talk show queen Oprah Winfrey at Parmeshwar Godrej’s residence in Mumbai. An excited Lara, after meeting Winfrey and her favourite co-star Shah Rukh Khan on Monday night, had then tweeted: “@Oprah and @iamsrk, two people I absolutely adore! Thank you for making my day!
