Programme of events
BARBADOS has declared 2011 the year of Culture and History
23rd – 30th May 2011
The Celtic Festival celebrates the culture of the
early Barbadian settlers, many of whom were
Scottish, Irish and Welsh. For the last week in May,
Barbadians join with Celts from all over the world in
sharing the culture, the heritage and music shared by
these countries.
We celebrate our celtic connections in Barbados with
a festival full of music and dance, a fusion of flavours
of food, and share culture, history and heritage
through concerts, expeditions and sporting events.

Scottish folk legend EDDI READER MBE, shot to fame with hit single
‘Perfect’ with the band Fairground Attraction, awarded best single at the
BRIT awards. The recipient of three BRIT awards she has topped the album and
single charts in the UK. Eddi’s latest album immortalised the poems of Scotland’s
national “bard” (poet) Robert Burns during the 250th anniversary of his birth …
and she sang at the opening of the Scottish Parliament.
PHILIP 7 is taking the music industry by storm with his hit single 'Beautiful Surprise'
and after winning the Barbados Music Awards 2008 as the best rock/alternative
artist it is looking like he has a promising musical career ahead of him. He is also
lead singer in 'Masala', who were also nominated in the Barbados Music Awards
2008. The band covers soca, reggae, 60's Beatles tunes, 70's rock classics and of
course some of Philip's original material.
MARTYN GRAVES from THE COMBINED BANDS OF THE SOUTH WEST
Martyn and his Scottish pipers have been playing in Barbados at every Celtic
festival the island has organised since 1997 and surprising some newly wed
Celts by turning up at their weddings in Barbados and playing the bagpipes!
And Pipe Major Laura Simpson, formerly with City of York Pipe Band but now
resident in Barbados.
KILLIN THYME Celtic rock band Killin Thyme led by Duncan Mackinnon bagpiper
extraordinaire. Duncan has been playing the bagpipes for over 35 years and comes
from a very musical family. He has played at many celtic festivals. Duncan will run a
bagpipe workshop during our Celtic festival week.
IRISH DANCERS – British National, All Ireland, All Scotland and World Champion
Irish Dancer Jordan Osborne, who is just home from a 5 year touring stint with

Tiger. She will perform with her World Medalist sister Jocelyn Osborne from the
Irish Jig Shop in Glasgow and World Medalist Gavin Boyle from “Dance Masters”.
Jordan has just launched her own Irish Dance Academy in Glasgow.
With her self proclaimed brand of 'Dirty Pop', new singer/songwriter

sea from Skye, has opened for Pink in Glasgow, for the Proclaimers, and has
shared the stage with Mumford & Sons, and KT Tunstall whilst touring extensively
throughout the UK and abroad. A finalist in the Live and Unsigned area finalists
2010 in Glasgow, Sandra is “one to watch”.
DONNA MACIOCIA (ma-chaw-cha) – originally from Fife, Scotland (with an
Italian surname) is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and singer who rose to
prominence as the leading light behind Edinburgh cult-legends Amplifico. After
supporting big names like Regina Spektor and KT Tunstall (Donna also provided
backing vocals on KT's album 'Acoustic Extravaganza') at numerous venues across
the UK & Ireland with Amplifico. A one woman juggernaut of sound, layering
vocals, guitars, piano and beat boxing along with the sounds of a cajón, ukulele
and kazoo – all guaranteed to stun a crowd to silence.
Chef PAUL WEDGWOOD, from award winning Wedgwood the restaurant on
Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, has been voted the Best Rated Newcomer in the UK, best
place to eat outside London! And is listed in The Michelin Guide. Paul trained
