It is truly joining in a shared journey with our kehillah k’doshah. At Congregation Or Ami, we are proud to call our community a “Family of Friends.” We encourage you to meet the many wonderful people who are part of our kehillah k’doshah. Young or old, married or single, with children at home or not, this is a place where you can feel you belong. For some, Congregation Or Ami is a spiritual home. For others, it is the address for engaging with old friends and meeting new ones. Some come here to learn and explore Jewish tradition. Others love the meaningful way life’s simchas are celebrated and find powerful emotional support during times of struggle or loss. Membership in a synagogue also represents a commitment to a community. It means that you are involved in keeping our congregation alive and seeing it continue for the next generation. Our members are partners in the future of Congregation Or Ami and in the lives of the men, women and children of the community. Please help welcome our new members at our New Member Dinner on Friday, November 13. Our Shabbat dinners offer casual, friendly opportunities to connect and get to know one another. Join us! Abraham charges a servant to return to Abraham’s homeland to find a wife for Abraham’s son Isaac. The servant prays for a sign, that a woman will show him great kindness and hospitality. A woman comes up to him and offers to give water to him and his camels. When the servant discovers that this woman is Rebecca, Abraham’s niece, he knows that she is the one for Isaac. She returns with him, and Isaac loves her. Abraham remarries and has 10 more children. At age 175, Abraham dies. Ishmael dies at age 137. November 14: Toldot, Genesis 25:19 – 28:9 Rebecca is barren. Isaac prays for her, and she gets pregnant with twins. God tells her that the older will serve the younger. The firstborn is named Esau; his brother comes out holding on to Esau’s heel, and is named Jacob. As they grow, Isaac favors Esau, who is an outdoorsman; Jacob is a homebody, favored by Rebecca. Esau comes home famished from hunting to find Jacob cooking a stew. He asks for some, but Jacob makes Esau sell him his firstborn birthright in exchange. God affirms the covenant with Isaac. Isaac reopens wells that Abraham had dug but which had been stopped up after his death. Isaac gets old and loses his sight. Thinking he is about to die, he asks Esau to hunt and prepare him some food, which he will eat before giving Esau the firstborn blessing. Rebecca overhears and sends Jacob to the flock to get animals for Rebecca to cook. Jacob covers himself in animal skin so he will seem hairy like Esau. He goes in to Isaac with the food and asks for the blessing. Isaac questions him and feels him, and Jacob passes for Esau. Isaac eats the food and blesses Jacob, and Jacob leaves. Esau comes in with his food, and Isaac wonders who he is. Esau realizes that Jacob has stolen his blessing, and Isaac gives Esau a lesser blessing. Esau is enraged, and vows to kill Jacob. Rebecca and Isaac send Jacob away to her family for his protection. November 21: Va-yeitzei, Genesis 28:10 - 32:3 Jacob leaves home, fleeing the wrath of his twin brother Esau, whose blessing he had stolen by deceiving their father Isaac. At nightfall, he lies down to sleep, and dreams of a ladder to the sky with angels ascending and descending. In the dream, God appears and makes a covenant with him, promising to protect him. When Jacob awakes, he vows that if God does protect him, then he will worship God. Jacob arrives at his mother’s homeland, and encounters his cousin Rachel at a well. She brings him back to her family’s house, and Jacob starts to live and work with the family. After a month, Rachel’s father, Laban, wants to compensate Jacob for the work he is doing. Jacob has fallen in love with Rachel, so he promises to work for Laban for seven years if Laban will let him marry her. Seven years later, the wedding proceeds, but in the morning, Jacob discovers that Laban has tricked him into accidentally marrying Rachel’s older sister Leah. Laban proposes to let Jacob marry Rachel also a week later—if he agrees to work seven more years—and Jacob accepts. Leah has four sons (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah), but Rachel is barren. Rachel gives Jacob her maid Bilhah, and she has two sons (Dan and Naftali). Leah then gives Jacob her maid Zilpah, and she has two sons (Gad and Asher). Leah has two more sons (Issachar and Zebulun), followed by a daughter Dinah. Finally, Rachel has a son, named Joseph. Jacob grows rich from his work for Laban, but starts to feel that Laban and Laban’s sons resent his success. Twenty years after Jacob left home, God tells him it is time to return. November 28: Va-yishlach, Genesis 32:4 – 36:43 As Jacob approaches home, he sends messengers to Esau. They return, saying that Esau is coming with four hundred men. Afraid, Jacob divides his entourage into two camps, so that even if one is attacked, the other may escape. He prays for protection, and then sends Esau droves of animals as presents. That night, an unnamed man wrestles with Jacob. Jacob refuses to let the man go, unless he blesses him. The man responds that Jacob’s name will be changed to Israel, meaning “one who wrestles with God.” In the morning, Esau arrives. As Jacob approaches him, Esau runs up to him and embraces him. Esau offers to travel with Jacob, but Jacob declines. Jacob settles outside a city called Shechem. The prince of Shechem rapes Jacob’s daughter Dinah and wants to marry her. Jacob’s sons Simeon and Levi offer to let him marry her if all the men of Shechem are circumcised. They agree, but on the third day following the circumcision, as the men are recuperating, Simeon and Levi slaughter them all. Jacob takes his family to Bethel, where he had had his vision of the ladder. There, God changes his name to Israel, and reaffirms the covenant. Rachel has another son, but she dies in childbirth, and Jacob names the boy Benjamin. Isaac dies, and is buried by Esau and Jacob. Make a Wish grants kids with a life threatening disease a wish. For example, Make a Wish made a five-year-old boy’s dream to become Batkid come true. Make a Wish organized an event, and one day, 12,000 people in San Francisco dressed up as characters from Batman. The list of people who came included the San Francisco Giants, the city’s mayor, and the police department. For my mitzvah project I am going to auction off Flyers tickets in the Or Ami newsletter and give all the money to the Make a Wish foundation. Naomi Israeli November 21 Daughter of Hillary and Michael Israeli I learned a sad lesson this spring. I learned that kids sometimes commit suicide, even if no one knows that they are sad. When my brother’s friend Cayman killed himself, I got very sad. I don’t want anyone else to go through that kind of loss. All kids should know that no matter how bad things get, suicide is never the answer. For my mitzvah project, I worked with PAYSPI, the PA Youth Suicide Prevention Initiative. My project had two parts. First, I created and sold wristbands to raise money for PAYSPI. In addition to the fundraising, I also gave away wristbands and talked to people at the Clover Market in Bryn Mawr. I also talked to people at the PAYSPI table at the Phillies’ Suicide Prevention night at Citizen’s Bank Park, and at the CHOP Mental Health Fair. The wristbands all have the National Suicide Prevention Talkline phone number on them: 1-800-273-8255. Anyone can call that number from anywhere in the USA, anytime, and someone will always be there to listen. My hope is that no kid will ever choose suicide again. For more information, see http:// www.payspi.org Jake Brownstein November 28 Son of Iris and Larry Brownstein I have been involved with various “Family Mitzvah Projects” my whole life. When given a choice, for my bar mitzvah, I wanted to volunteer somewhere that would combine two of my passions: kids and basketball. For about a year, my dad and I have been volunteering at the Silver Springs Martin Luther School, providing both companionship and basketball skills training to some of the kids. Silver Springs is located in Plymouth Meeting and provides various mental health services to children and families in need. It is a special place for nurturing and healing. Our basketball sessions are seen as a reward for the kids, sometimes for good behavior and sometimes for other positive breakthroughs. But I, too, find the sessions rewarding. I really enjoy spending time with the kids. No matter their family or personal problems, every kid lights up when you put a ball in their hands! I intend to continue working at this wonderful school after my bar mitzvah. Another mitzvah I chose to do was that my family and I supported the Jewish Abayudaya tribe in Uganda, Africa for the last few years by buying over one hundred beautiful kippot designed and hand-made by the Abayudaya. This was my way of helping repair the world. Also, in lieu of flowers at my Kiddush luncheon, we purchased several large food baskets to adorn the tables. The purchase of these food baskets will support the Federation’s Philadelphia area Mitzvah Food Project in order to help the needy in our community. Finally, in light of what is going on today in Israel, I intend to donate a portion of my bar mitzvah money to the American Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, because Israel’s future depends on it. 7 Stephanie Newman and Manya Perel Holocaust survivor Manya Perel spoke to Omdim students about her harrowing experiences.. Understanding the Shoah O n October 13, Manya Perel spoke to Omdim students about her harrowing testimony to World War II. Seventh, eighth and ninth graders and interested parents have the chance to learn from a series of witnesses to this dark time in our history. The course, taught and facilitated by Stephanie Newman, is entitled “Understanding the Shoah.” The course runs for five weeks as part of the Omdim program. Or Ami extends special thanks for their assistance to Geoffrey Quinn and the Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center. 8 Manya Perel and Rabbi Shoshanah Tornberg T hank you to the following families who contributed to our first Light of Our People campaign. These gifts represent an investment in the future of Congregation Or Ami, replacing the “Bridge the Gap” campaign as a means to fund our basic and ongoing operating expenses. These contributions help defray the cost of dues commitments and the cost of Religious School for all members.
